Although profiled steel sheets have the diaphragm effect in steel structure, since there is no specific code to follow in China, it is only used as the reservation of the structural stiffness. So it results in economic wastes. In order to investigate the contribution of stressed skin to the overall stiffness, field tests are carried out to measure the lateral stiffness of the frames with and without stressed skin diaphgram.Based on the superposition principle and using the curve fitting method, the test results are quantified. The shear rigidity of stressed skin diaphgram spanning several purlins is gained indirectly. It shows that the shear rigidity of the diaphragm between two frames is even close to the lateral stiffness of one frame.

Family Portrait, made by Humphrey Jennings for the 1951 Festival of Britain, negotiates the complexity of national identity within and through a productively ambiguous iconography. Simultaneously, future political directions for the nation and speculation on the coming social condition of the ‘national family’ are offered in the film. Family Portrait, often overlooked in critical assessments of Jennings' film-making career which typically focus on his wartime films, emerges as a central work within the Jennings' canon, one which frames national identity within a particular moment within modernity in Britain.

We describe the history, construction, and use of a portable walk-in wader trap (i.e., modified Ottenby trap) designed to be used in field expedition conditions. It is rectangular-shaped, 120 × 41 × 32 cm when operational, weighs between 1.5 and 2 kg (depending on materials used) and can be folded flat for easy transportation. It consists of several metal frames filled with fishing net, and has a netted roof attached by an elastic chord. Traps are placed either singly or in groups, with the optimal trapping situation occurring when birds are feeding along some kind of leading line such as the edge of a estuary, lake, or other water body. The trap is highly efficient for waders up to around 100 g, but is also suitable for ground-feeding passerines.

The article discusses the findings of research on the cost performance of structural frames. The analysis conducted is based on a range of designs that are commonly found in 10-storey buildings in Australia. The study explored the best cost solutions for any particular project through generic cost models of steel, concrete, and formwork systems used in commercial buildings. The research concluded that the most important factor in choosing structural building frames would be the unique characteristics of individual projects.

We extend the standard solution to comic rendering with a comic-style specular component. To minimise the computational overhead associated with this extension, we introduce two optimising approximations; the perspective correction angle and the vertex face-orientation measure. Both of these optimisations are generally applicable, but they are especially well suited for applications where a physically correct lighting simulation is not required. Using our optimisations we achieve performances comparable to the standard solution. As our approximations favour large models, we even outperform the standard approach for models consisting of 10,000 triangles or more, which we can render exceeding 40 frames per second, including the specular component.

This study considers three Hollywood films that take, as their subject, a teacher-hero confronted with a 'problem' group of students and, as their narrative, the rehabilitation of these students and the resolution of their problems. Employing a Bourdieuian analysis, we attempt a second screening of these films on two levels: first, by stepping inside these celluloid classrooms, so to speak, and narrating a different text, one that is spoken from the position of students and which challenges each film's portrayal of good people achieving fine things; and secondly, by screening for gaps in their accounts of schooling, exposing their limited frames of reference and their legitimacy to speak on behalf of authentic classrooms. The first of these projects is undertaken as a way of challenging teachers and interested others to be wary of uncritical readings of popular images of teaching, whereas the second provides a beginning from which to consider how teachers' pedagogy and school curricula can be informed by a radical democratic view of education - how teachers might embrace the foreign.

Regression lies heart in statistics, it is the one of the most important branch of multivariate techniques available for extracting knowledge in almost every field of study and research. Nowadays, it has drawn a huge interest to perform the tasks with different fields like machine learning, pattern recognition and data mining. Investigating outlier (exceptional) is a century long problem to the data analyst and researchers. Blind application of data could have dangerous consequences and leading to discovery of meaningless patterns and carrying to the imperfect knowledge. As a result of digital revolution and the growth of the Internet and Intranet data continues to be accumulated at an exponential rate and thereby importance of detecting outliers and study their costs and benefits as a tool for reliable knowledge discovery claims perfect attention. Investigating outliers in regression has been paid great value for the last few decades within two frames of thoughts in the name of robust regression and regression diagnostics. Robust regression first wants to fit a regression to the majority of the data and then to discover outliers as those points that possess large residuals from the robust output whereas in regression diagnostics one first finds the outliers, delete/correct them and then fit the regular data by classical (usual) methods. At the beginning there seems to be much confusion but now the researchers reach to the consensus, robustness and diagnostics are two complementary approaches to the analysis of data and any one is not good enough. In this chapter, we discuss both of them under the unique spectrum of regression diagnostics. Chapter expresses the necessity and views of regression diagnostics as well as presents several contemporary methods through numerical examples in linear regression within each aforesaid category together with current challenges and possible future research directions. Our aim is to make the chapter self-explained maintaining its general accessibility.

Most current work on video indexing concentrates on queries which operate over high level semantic information which must be entirely composed and entered manually. We propose an indexing system which is based on spatial information about key objects in a scene. These key objects may be detected automatically, with manual supervision, and tracked through a sequence using one of a number of recently developed techniques. This representation is highly compact and allows rapid resolution of queries specified by iconic example. A number of systems have been produced which use 2D string notations to index digital image libraries. Just as 2D strings provide a compact and tractable indexing notation for digital pictures, a sequence of 2D strings might provide an index for a video or image sequence. To improve further upon this we reduce the representation to the 2D string pair representing the initial frame, and a sequence of edits to these strings. This takes advantage of the continuity between frames to further reduce the size of the notation. By representing video sequences using string edits, a notation has been developed which is compact, and allows querying on the spatial relationships of objects to be performed without rebuilding the majority of the scene. Calculating ranks of objects directly from the edit sequence allows matching with minimal calculation, thus greatly reducing search time. This paper presents the edit sequence notation and algorithms for evaluating queries over image sequences. A number of optimizations which represent a considerably saving in search time is demonstrated in the paper.

In this paper, we present a system for pedestrian detection involving scenes captured by mobile bus surveillance cameras in busy city streets. Our approach integrates scene localization, foreground and background separation, and pedestrian detection modules into a unified detection framework. The scene localization module performs a two stage clustering of the video data. In the first stage, SIFT Homography is applied to cluster frames in terms of their structural similarities and second stage further clusters these aligned frames in terms of lighting. This produces clusters of images which are differential in viewpoint and lighting. A kernel density estimation (KDE) method for colour and gradient foreground-background separation are then used to construct background model for each image cluster which is subsequently used to detect all foreground pixels. Finally, using a hierarchical template matching approach, pedestrians can be identified. We have tested our system on a set of real bus video datasets and the experimental results verify that our system works well in practice.

Wide area surveillance requires high-resolution images of the object of interest derived possibly from only low-resolution video of the whole scene. We propose a combined tracking and resolution enhancement approach that increases the resolution of the object of interest during tracking. The key idea is the use of an object-specific 3D mesh model with which we are able to track non-planar objects across a large number of frames. This model is subdivided such that every triangle is smaller than a pixel when projected into the image to facilitate super-resolution on the model rather than on the image. We apply our approach to faces and show that it outperforms interpolation methods by achieving resolution enhancement, while being less blurred.

The aim of this work is to devise an effective method for static summarization of home video sequences. Based on the premise that the user watching a summary is interested in people related (how many, who, emotional state) or activity related aspects, we formulate a novel approach to video summarization that works to specifically expose relevant video frames that make the content spotting tasks possible. Unlike existing approaches, which work on low-level features which often produce the summary not appealing to the viewer due to the semantic gap between low-level features and high-level concepts, our approach is driven by various utility functions (identity count, identity recognition, emotion recognition, activity recognition, sense of space) that use the results of face detection, face clustering, shot clustering and within cluster frame alignment. The summarization problem is then treated as the problem of extracting the set of key frames that have the maximum combined utility.
