The results of this thesis indicated that males engage in comparisons when evaluating their bodies and more frequently use similar others, such as friends and the average male for comparison. The results showed that comparisons to males in the media and professional athletes indicated body dissatisfaction and drive for muscularity. The portfolio presents four eating disorder case studies to illustrate how a therapist can use manual-based CBT techniques in a flexible manner and adapt interventions to the individual needs of clients who have motivational issues or present with complex comorbidity, in order to improve treatment outcomes.

In a qualitative study of the engagement of New Zealand social workers in continuing professional education the construct "professional capital", a form of symbolic capital, explains complex links between perceived status within institutional settings and the aspirations of practitioners. Strategies for developing greater engagement in scholarship and research are recommended.

Childhood cruelty to animals is associated with interpersonal violence in later life. The study for this thesis investigated risk factors for childhood cruelty to animals in China. For both boys and girls externalising problems, poor communication within families, and harsh parental discipline predicted animal cruelty, providing targets for intervention to prevent later violence. The portfolio presents four clinical case studies which demonstrate the complex and varied impact that intimate partner violence has on women, and the importance of psychological intervention in assisting women to manage their physical and mental health and well-being.

The TGF-Ý superfamily comprises a large group of proteins with many effects on muscle growth and maturation. The molecular regulation of skeletal muscle regeneration and metabolism in response to prominent superfamily members, myostatin and TGF-Ý1, were analysed, demonstrating the importance of this pathway in controlling how muscles grow and are regulated.

Chemoattractive myokines are inflammatory molecules released from muscle that are important in muscle repair and recovery. Exercise increased these factors, enabling the infiltration of immune cells, while ageing blunted this response. This work provides new insights into the complex regulation of inflammatory responses that are important for growth and function.

Hyposensitivity to fatty acid taste is associated with greater intake of fat, higher BMI and attenuated gastrointestinal (GI) function. These observations are consistent amongst healthy and overweight/obese subjects, who display attenuated taste and GI function, and consume excess fat.

This research investigated attraction among individuals with autism. We found that those with autism prefer partners who assist them to meet their social and cognitive needs. Partners of those with autism chose to trade-off emotional and social skills for other traits. Lastly, those with autism had lower self-perceived mate value.

This thesis investigated the emergence of borderline personality disorder in adolescence. It found that adolescent sensitivity to, and maternal socialization of, aggressive behaviour is associated with borderline pathology. Change in pathology over time was related to adolescent dysphoric behaviour and sensitivity to inconsistent displays of maternal negative emotion.

This thesis investigated the use of mindfulness as an intervention for children with ADHD. Findings indicate significant improvements in attentional, behavioural, and affective deficit symptoms following participation in a mindfulness-based intervention, demonstrating that mindfulness may be a worthwhile alternative or adjunct to ADHD treatment.

This paper explores the issue of sustainable marketing practices; more explicitly: whether or not marketers will trade off profitability for the environment. To examine this notion, a question was asked of certified practicing marketers (CPM) during a webinar on hot topics in marketing. Results show that the long term environment is still at risk as marketers are unwilling to trade off profits for sustainable practice. This implies that social marketing activities may require more intense efforts to redress this situation. These activities may need to include upstream social marketing that will require underpinning research for strategic direction.

BACKGROUND: Perinatal depression has a significant impact on both mother and child. However, the influence of hormonal changes during pregnancy and the postpartum period remains unclear. This article provides a systematic review of studies examining the effects of maternal cortisol function on perinatal depression. METHOD: A systematic search was conducted of six electronic databases for published research on the relationship between cortisol and perinatal depression. The databases included; MEDLINE complete, PsychINFO, SCOPUS, Psychology and Behavioural Sciences, Science Direct and EBSCO, for the years 1960 to May 2015. Risk of bias was assessed and data extraction verified by two investigators. RESULTS: In total, 47 studies met criteria and studies showed considerable variation in terms of methodology including sample size, cortisol assays, cortisol substrates, sampling processes and outcome measures. Those studies identified as higher quality found that the cortisol awakening response is positively associated with momentary mood states but is blunted in cases of major maternal depression. Furthermore, results indicate that hypercortisolemia is linked to transient depressive states while hypocortisolemia is related to chronic postpartum depression. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: Future research should aim to improve the accuracy of cortisol measurement over time, obtain multiple cortisol samples in a day and utilise diagnostic measures of depression. Future studies should also consider both antenatal and postnatal depression and the differential impact of atypical versus melancholic depression on cortisol levels, as this can help to further clarify the relationship between perinatal depression and maternal cortisol function across pregnancy and the postpartum period.
