The purpose of this study was to assess the validity of a GPS tracking system to estimate energy expenditure (EE) during exercise and field sport locomotor movements. Twenty-seven participants each completed one 90 minute exercise session on an outdoor synthetic futsal pitch. During the exercise session participants wore a 5 Hz GPS unit interpolated to 15 Hz (SPI HPU, GPSports Pty Ltd, Australia) and a portable gas analyser (Metamax® 3B, Cortex Pty Ltd, Germany) which acted as the criterion measure of EE. The exercise session was comprised of alternating five minute exercise bouts of randomised walking, jogging, running or a field sport circuit (x3) followed by 10 minutes of recovery. One-way ANOVA showed significant (p<0.01) and very large underestimations between GPS metabolic power derived EE and VO2 derived EE for all field sport circuits (% difference ≈ -44%). No differences in EE were observed for the jog (7.8%) and run (4.8%) while very large overestimations were found for the walk (43.0%). The GPS metabolic power EE over the entire 90 minute session was significantly lower (p<0.01) than the VO2 EE, resulting in a moderate underestimation overall (-19%). The results of this study suggest that a GPS tracking system using the metabolic power model of EE does not accurately estimate EE in field sport movements or over an exercise session consisting of mixed locomotor activities interspersed with recovery periods; however is able to provide a reasonably accurate estimation of EE during continuous jogging and running.

A platform to move gait analysis, which is normally restricted to a clinical environment in a well-equipped gait laboratory, into an ambulatory system, potentially in non-clinical settings is introduced. This novel system can provide functional measurements to guide therapeutic interventions for people requiring rehabilitation with limited access to such gait laboratories. BioKin system consists of three layers: a low-cost wearable wireless motion capture sensor, data collection and storage engine, and the motion analysis and visualisation platform. Moreover, a novel limb orientation estimation algorithm is implemented in the motion analysis platform. The performance of the orientation estimation algorithm is validated against the orientation results from a commercial optical motion analysis system and an instrumented treadmill. The study results demonstrate a root-mean-square error less than 4° and a correlation coefficient more than 0.95 when compared with the industry standard system. These results indicate that the proposed motion analysis platform is a potential addition to existing gait laboratories in order to facilitate gait analysis in remote locations.

UNLABELLED: Competition-specific conditioning for tournament basketball games is challenging, as the demands of tournament formats are not well characterized. PURPOSE: To compare the physical, physiological, and tactical demands of seasonal and tournament basketball competition and determine the pattern of changes within an international tournament. METHODS: Eight elite junior male basketball players (age 17.8 ± 0.2 y, height 1.93 ± 0.07 m, mass 85 ± 3 kg; mean ± SD) were monitored in 6 seasonal games played over 4 mo in an Australian second-division national league and in 7 games of an international under-18 tournament played over 8 days. Movement patterns and tactical elements were coded from video and heart rates recorded by telemetry. RESULTS: The frequency of running, sprinting, and shuffling movements in seasonal games was higher than in tournament games by 8-15% (99% confidence limits ± ~8%). Within the tournament, jogging and low- to medium-intensity shuffling decreased by 15-20% (± ~14%) over the 7 games, while running, sprinting, and high-intensity shuffling increased 11-81% (± ~25%). There were unclear differences in mean and peak heart rates. The total number of possessions was higher in seasonal than in tournament games by 8% (± 10%). CONCLUSIONS: Coaches should consider a stronger emphasis on strength and power training in their conditioning programs to account for the higher activity of seasonal games. For tournament competition, strategies that build a sufficient aerobic capacity and neuromuscular resilience to maintain high-intensity movements need to be employed. A focus on half-court tactics accounts for the lower number of possessions in tournaments.

The study proposes a method of interpretation, which gives the contemporary singer-actor and director a method of performance analysis considering both the visual and the auditory aspects of vocal performance. The analysis begins with an analysis of the structure, which maps out the key ideas and translates them into main states of mind. The text analysis is followed by an analysis of the musical treatment of the text, also scanning for extra dramatic meaning inherent in vocal line and musical accompaniment. The so isolated dramatic ideas in text and musical structure and content are finally discussed in terms of their physical aspects, using the system of gesture as practiced by actors and singers before, during and beyond the Baroque period. The method is exemplified by the obbligato recitative "In quali eccessi" from Donna Elvira’s scene in the second act of the opera "Don Giovanni" by L. Da Ponte and W. A. Mozart. The musical example includes gestural notation and a table gestural notation symbols.

This paper presents a new study on the application of the framework of Computational Media Aesthetics to the problem of automated understanding of film. Leveraging Film Grammar as the means to closing the "semantic gap" in media analysis, we examine film rhythm, a powerful narrative concept used to endow structure and form to the film compositionally and enhance its lyrical quality experientially. The novelty of this paper lies in the specification and investigation of the rhythmic elements that are present in two cinematic devices; namely motion and editing patterns, and their potential usefulness to automated content annotation and management systems. In our rhythm model, motion behavior is classified as being either nonexistent, fluid or staccato for a given shot. Shot neighborhoods in movies are then grouped by proportional makeup of these motion behavioral classes to yield seven high-level rhythmic arrangements that prove to be adept at indicating likely scene content (e.g. dialogue or chase sequence) in our experiments. The second part of our investigation presents a computational model to detect editing patterns as either metric, accelerated, decelerated or free. Details of the algorithm for the extraction of these classes are presented, along with experimental results on real movie data. We show with an investigation of combined rhythmic patterns that, while detailed content identification via rhythm types alone is not possible by virtue of the fact that film is not codified to this level in terms of rhythmic elements, analysis of the combined motion/editing rhythms can allow us to determine that the content has changed and hypothesize as to why this is so. We present three such categories of change and demonstrate their efficacy for capturing useful film elements (e.g. scene change precipitated by plot event), by providing data support from five motion pictures.

This paper forms a continuation of our work focused on exploiting film grammar for the task of automated film understanding. We examine film rhythm, a powerful narrative concept used to endow structure and form to the film compositionally and to enhance its lyrical quality experientially. Of the many, often complex, cinematic devices contributing to film rhythm, this paper investigates the rhythmic elements that are present in edited sequences of shots, and presents a novel computational model to detect shot structural rhythm as either metric, accelerated, decelerated, or free. Details of the algorithm for the extraction of these editing rhythm classes are presented, along with experimental results on real movie data. Following this we study the usefulness of combining the rhythmic patterns induced through both motion and editing in film. This article brings together the disparate worlds of dance practice, motion capture and statistical analysis. Digital technologies such as motion capture offer dance artists new processes for recording and studying dance movement. Statistical analysis of these data can reveal hidden patterns in movement in ways that are semantically ‘blind’, and are hence able to challenge accepted culturo-physical ‘grammars’ of dance creation. The potential benefit to dance artists is to open up new ways of understanding choreographic movement. However, quantitative analysis does not allow for the uncertainty inherent in emergent, artistic practices such as dance. This article uses motion capture and principal component analysis (PCA), a common statistical technique in human movement recognition studies, to examine contemporary dance movement, and explores how this analysis might be interpreted in an artistic context to generate a new way of looking at the nature and role of movement patterning in dance creation.

 Determining an analytical solution to the inverse kinematics problem for a parallel manipulator is typically a straightforward problem. However, lower mobility parallel manipulators with 2-5 degrees of freedom (DOFs) often suffer from an unwanted parasitic motion in one or more DOFs. For such manipulators, the inverse kinematics problem can be significantly more difficult. This paper contains an analysis of the inverse kinematics problem for a class of 3-DOF parallel manipulators with axis-symmetric arm systems. All manipulators in the studied class exhibit parasitic motion in one DOF. For manipulators in the studied class, the general solution to the inverse kinematics problem is reduced to solving a univariate equation, while analytical solutions are presented for several important special cases.

Since 1998, tele-rehabilitation has been extensively studied for its potential capacity of saving time and cost for both therapists and patients. However, one gap hindering the deployment of tele-rehabilitation service is the approach to evaluate the outcome after tele-rehabilitation exercises without the presence of professional clinicians. In this paper, we propose an approach to model jerky and jerky-free movement trajectories with hidden Markov models (HMMs). The HMMs are then utilised to identify the jerky characteristics in a motion trajectory, thereby providing the number and amplitude of jerky movements in the specific length of the trajectory. Eventually, the ability of performing functional upper extremity tasks can be evaluated by classifying the motion trajectory into one of the pre-defined ability levels by looking at the number and amplitude of jerky movements. The simulation experiment confirmed that the proposed method is able to correctly classify motion trajectories into various ability levels to a high degree.

 This thesis presents several results regarding the kinematic performance analysis of axis-symmetric parallel mechanisms with closed-loop sub-chains. Screw theory based methods have been utilised to generate new indices, along with a formal procedure, enabling the systematic and complete singularity and motion/force transmission analysis of parallel mechanisms with these closed-loop sub-chains.

This paper aims to show that by using low level feature extraction, motion and object identifying and tracking methods, features can be extracted and indexed for efficient and effective retrieval for video; such as an awards ceremony video. Video scene/shot analysis and key frame extraction are used as a foundation to identify objects in video and be able to find spatial relationships within the video. The compounding of low level features such as colour, texture and abstract object identification lead into higher level real object identification and tracking and scene detection. The main focus is on using a video style that is different to the heavily used sports and news genres. Using different video styles can open the door to creating methods that could encompass all video types instead of specialized methods for each specific style of video.

We have determined the structure of the reduced form of the DsbA oxidoreductase from Vibrio cholerae. The reduced structure shows a high level of similarity to the crystal structure of the oxidized form and is typical of this class of enzyme containing a thioredoxin domain with an inserted α-helical domain. Proteolytic and thermal stability measurements show that the reduced form of DsbA is considerably more stable than the oxidized form. NMR relaxation data have been collected and analyzed using a model-free approach to probe the dynamics of the reduced and oxidized states of DsbA. Akaike's information criteria have been applied both in the selection of the model-free models and the diffusion tensors that describe the global motions of each redox form. Analysis of the dynamics reveals that the oxidized protein shows increased disorder on the pico- to nanosecond and micro- to millisecond timescale. Many significant changes in dynamics are located either close to the active site or at the insertion points between the domains. In addition, analysis of the diffusion data shows there is a clear difference in the degree of interdomain movement between oxidized and reduced DsbA with the oxidized form being the more rigid. Principal components analysis has been employed to indicate possible concerted movements in the DsbA structure, which suggests that the modeled interdomain motions affect the catalytic cleft of the enzyme. Taken together, these data provide compelling evidence of a role for dynamics in the catalytic cycle of DsbA.
