Little grassbirds (Megalurus gramineus) are small, sexually monomorphic passerines that live in reed beds, lignum swamps and salt marshes in southern Australia. The breeding biology and patterns of sex allocation of the little grassbird were investigated over a single breeding season. Our observations of this species in the Edithvale Wetland Reserve revealed a highly male-biased population sex ratio, with some breeding territories containing several additional males. Nevertheless, there was little compelling evidence that little grassbirds breed cooperatively. The growth rates of male and female nestlings were similar and, as predicted by theory, there was no overall primary sex ratio bias. However, the primary sex ratio was female-biased early in the breeding season and became increasingly male-biased later in the breeding season.

The 3rd generation partnership project (3GPP) long term evolution (LTE) standard uses single carrier frequency division multiple access (SCFDMA) scheme for the uplink transmissions and orthogonal frequency division multiplexing access (OFDMA) in downlink. SCFDMA uses DFT spreading prior to OFDMA modulation to map the signal from each user to a subset of the available subcarriers i.e., single carrier modulation. The efficiency of a power amplifier is determined by the peak to average power ratio (PAPR) of the modulated signal. In this paper, we analyze the PAPR in 3GPP LTE systems using root raised cosine based filter. Simulation results show that the SCFDMA subcarrier mapping has a significantly lower PAPR compared to OFDMA. Also comparing the three forms of SCFDMA subcarrier mapping, results show that interleave FDMA (IFDMA) subcarrier mapping with proposed root raised cosine filter reduced PAPR significantly than localized FDMA (LFDMA) and distributed (DFDMA) mapping. This improves its radio frequency (RF) power amplifier efficiency and also the mean power output from a battery driven mobile terminal.

This paper utilizes a methodological approach called Multi-Level Modeling (MLM) that addresses two major shortcomings in the two step analytic process that is traditionally adopted in the pertinent literature for modeling corporate collapse; thereby, enhancing procedural efficiency. The robustness of MLM vis-à-vis the traditional two-step procedure is ascertained using a data sample of Australian
publicly listed companies, equally split between collapsed and non collapsed, during the period 1989 to 2006. The results indicate that not only does MLM improve procedural efficiency, it does so while
enhancing the robustness of signaling corporate collapse; in particular, MLM signals collapse with an overall 6.6% increase in accuracy.

Female birds have been shown to have a remarkable degree of control over the sex ratio of the offspring they produce. However, it remains poorly understood how these skews are achieved. Female condition, and consequent variation in circulating hormones, provides a plausible mechanistic link between offspring sex biases and the environmental and social stresses commonly invoked to explain adaptive sex allocation, such as diet, territory quality, and body condition. However, although experimental studies have shown that female perception of male phenotype alone can lead to sex ratio biases, it is unknown how partner quality influences female physiological state. Using a controlled within-female experimental design where female Gouldian finches (Erythrura gouldiae) bred with both high- and low-quality males, we found that partner quality directly affects female hormonal status and subsequent fitness. When constrained to breeding with low-quality males, females had highly elevated stress responses (corticosterone levels) and produced adaptive male-biased sex ratios, whereas when they bred with high-quality males, females had low corticosterone levels and produced an equal offspring sex ratio. There was no effect of other maternal hormones (e.g., testosterone) or body condition on offspring sex ratios. Female physiological condition during egg production, and variation in circulating hormones in particular, may provide a general mechanistic route for strategic sex allocation in birds.

We report a novel approach for the assembly of one-dimensional hybrid nanostructures that consist of gold nanowires with ultrahigh aspect ratios (L/d > 500) self-assembled along the axes of multiwalled carbon nanotubes. The micrometer-long hybrid nanowires exhibit high electrical conductivity and can be easily microcontact-printed onto various substrates in a patterned form, suggesting that these hybrids have considerable potential as interconnects for nanoelectronic applications.

In this article, pre-service teachers' mathematics content knowledge is explored through the analysis of two items about ratio from a Mathematical Competency, Skills and Knowledge Test. Pre-service teachers' thinking strategies, common errors and misconceptions in their responses are presented and discussed. Of particular interest was the range and nature of common incorrect responses for one whole-whole ratio question. Results suggested pre-service teachers had difficulty interpreting a worded multi-step, ratio (scale) question, with errors relating to ratio and/or conversion of measurement knowledge. These difficulties reveal underdeveloped knowledge of mathematical structure and mathematical connections as well as an inability to deconstruct key components of a mathematical problem. Most pre-service teachers also lacked knowledge of standard procedures and methods of solutions.

Production of the human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) Gag-Pol precursor protein results from a −1 ribosomal frameshifting event. In infected cells, this generates Gag and Gag-Pol in a ratio that is estimated to be 20:1, a ratio that is conserved among retroviruses. To examine the impact of this ratio on HIV-1 replication and viral assembly, we altered the Gag/Gag-Pol ratio in virus-producing cells by cotransfecting HIV-1 proviral DNA with an HIV-1 Gag-Pol expression vector. Two versions of the Gag-Pol expression vector were used; one contains an active protease [PR(+)], and the other contains an inactive protease [PR(−)]. In an attempt to produce viral particles with Gag/Gag-Pol ratios ranging from 20:21 to 20:1 (wild type), 293T cells were cotransfected with various ratios of wild-type proviral DNA and proviral DNA from either Gag-Pol expression vector. Viral particles derived from cells with altered Gag/Gag-Pol ratios via overexpression of PR(−) Gag-Pol showed a ratio-dependent defect in their virion protein profiles. However, the defects in virion infectivity were independent of the nature of the Gag-Pol expression vector, i.e., PR(+) or PR(−). Based on equivalent input of reverse transcriptase activity, we estimated that HIV-1 infectivity was reduced 250- to 1,000-fold when the Gag/Gag-Pol ratio in the virion-producing cells was altered from 20:1 to 20:21. Although virion RNA packaging was not affected by altering Gag/Gag-Pol ratios, changing the ratio from 20:1 to 20:21 progressively reduced virion RNA dimer stability. The impact of the Gag/Gag-Pol ratio on virion RNA dimerization was amplified when the Gag-Pol PR(−) expression vector was expressed in virion-producing cells. Virions produced from cells expressing Gag and Gag-Pol PR(−) in a 20:21 ratio contained mainly monomeric RNA. Our observations provide the first direct evidence that, in addition to proteolytic processing, the ratio of Gag/Gag-Pol proteins is also important for RNA dimerization and that stable RNA dimers are not required for encapsidation of genomic RNA in HIV-1.

The effects of Si and Mn contents on microstructure, mechanical properties and formability of low carbon Si-Mn steels were studied, and the crack propagation of ferrite/bainite dual-phase steel was also investigated. The results showed that the increase in Si content increases the volume fraction of equiaxed ferrite. However, the increase in Mn content increases both strength and ductility, but decreases elongation and hole-expanding ratio. The crack of ferrite/bainite dual-phase steel is formed by the mode of microvoid coalescence. When a microcrack meets the bainite, it mostly propagates along the phase interface between ferrite and bainite and by cutting off ferrite grains. The hot-rolled ferrite/bainite dual-phase steel, which has a hole-expanding ratio of 95% and good property combination, could be produced by designing proper contents of Si and Mn as well as parameters of TMCP.

Classical resource- and the less studied ratio-dependent models of predator–prey relationships provide divergent predictions as to the sustained ecological effects of bottom-up forcing. While resource-dependent models, which consider only instantaneous prey density in modelling predator responses, predict community responses that are dependent on the number of trophic levels in a system, ratio-dependent models, which consider the number of prey per consumer, predict proportional increase in each level irrespective of chain length. The two models are only subtly different for systems with two or three trophic levels but in the case of four trophic levels, predict opposite effects of enrichment on primary producers. Despite the poor discriminatory power of tests of the models in systems with two or three trophic levels, field tests in estuarine and marine systems with four trophic levels have been notably absent. Sampling of phytoplankton, macroinvertebrates, invertebrate-feeding fishes, piscivorous fishes in Kooloonbung Creek, Hastings River estuary, eastern Australia, subject to over 20 years of sewage discharge, revealed increased abundances in all four trophic levels at the disturbed location relative to control sites. Increased abundance of phytoplankton at the disturbed site was counter to the predictions of resource-dependent models, which posit a reduction in the first trophic level in response to enrichment. By contrast, the increase in abundance of this first trophic level and the proportionality of increases in abundances of each of the four trophic groups to nitrogen loading provided strong support for ratio dependency. This first evidence of ratio dependence in an estuarine system with four trophic levels not only demonstrates the applicability of ecological theory which seeks to simplify the complexity of systems, but has implications for management. Although large nutrient inputs frequently induce mortality of invertebrates and fish, we have shown that smaller inputs may in fact enhance biomass of all trophic levels.

Variable compression ratio enables an engine to achieve increased efficiency at part loads, where the majority of driving occurs, without sacrificing full load power requirements or increasing the risk of engine knock. Although over 100 patents and patent applications exist none of these systems has been commercialized yet due to issues related to feasibility, cost and frictional loss. A new approach of a self controlling variable compression ratio connecting rod is presented that does not need a friction intensive external activation and that could even be retrofitted. The potential in fuel consumption and exhaust emission reduction as well as increased power and torque output for this concept has been verified in combustion simulations utilizing the latest research results related to the dynamic heat transfer in the combustion chamber from Professor Kleinschmidt from the University of Siegen, Germany. The self controlling variable compression ratio connecting rod allows the con rod to compress at high load conditions thereby increasing cylinder volume to alleviate combustion pressures and temperatures and therefore limit knock onset. The biggest efficiency gains can be achieved at medium load where the reduction of heat loss during the compression of the connecting rod plays a major role additional to the well known efficiency gains of an increased compression ratio. The combustion simulation results shows fuel consumption can be reduced by between 3% and 5% during part load and wide open throttle operation at various engine speeds.
