This paper proposes a ramp dual-pulse actuation-voltage waveform that reduces actuation-voltage shift in capacitive microelectromechanical system (MEMS) switches. The proposed waveform as well as two reported waveforms (dual pulse, and novel dual-pulse) are analyzed using equivalent-circuit and equation models. Based on the analysis outcome, the paper provides a clear understanding of trapped charge density in the dielectric. The results show that the proposed actuation-voltage waveform successfully reduces trapped charge and increases lifetime due to lowering of actuation-voltage shift. Using the proposed actuation-voltage waveform, the membrane reaches a steady state on the electrode faster.

An auto-switch device has been designed, constructed, and tested for multisensor corrosion measurements. The auto-switch is able to connect/disconnect the selected wire beam electrode and/or electrode pairs under computer control. A computer controlled analog switch-array consisting of 100 inputs has been used as an essential part of the switch bank. The switch-bank is an essential component of a corrosion-monitoring instrument that is expected to find wide application in industry. The performance of the switch-bank is discussed and its effect on the signals is illustrated.

We demonstrate the complete, rapid, and reversible switching between the emissions from two electrogenerated chemiluminescence (ECL) systems contained within the same solution, controlled by simple modification of the applied potential. The fundamental bases of the approach are the ability to selectively 'switch on' luminophores at distinct oxidation potentials, and an intriguing observation that the emission from the well-known electrochemiluminescent complex, fac-Ir(ppy)3, (where ppy is 2-phenylpyridinato), can be selectively 'switched-off' at high overpotentials. The dependence of this phenomenon on high concentrations of the co-reactant implicates quenching of the excited [Ir(ppy)3]* state by electron transfer. Rapid spectral scanning during modulation of the applied potential reveals well resolved maxima for mixtures comprising either green and red or green and blue luminophores, illustrating the vast potential of this approach for multiplexed ECL detection.

The closely related pathogenic Neisseria species N. meningitidis and N. gonorrhoeae are able to respire in the absence of oxygen, using nitrite as an alternative electron acceptor. aniA (copper-containing nitrite reductase) is tightly regulated by four transcriptional regulators: FNR (fumarate and nitrate reductase), NarP, FUR (Ferric uptake regulator) and NsrR. The four regulators control expression of aniA in N. meningitidis by binding to specific and distinct regions of the promoter. We show in the present study that FUR and NarP are both required for the induction of expression of aniA in N. meningitidis, and that they bind adjacent to one another in a non-co-operative manner. Activation via FUR/NarP is dependent on their topological arrangement relative to the RNA polymerase-binding site. Analysis of the sequence of the aniA promoters from multiple N. meningitidis and N. gonorrhoeae strains indicates that there are species-specific single nucleotide polymorphisms, in regions predicted to be important for regulator binding. These sequence differences alter both the in vitro DNA binding and the promoter activation in intact cells by key activators FNR (oxygen sensor) and NarP (which is activated by nitrite in N. meningitidis). The weak relative binding of FNR to the N. gonorrhoeae aniA promoter (compared to N. meningitidis) is compensated for by a higher affinity of the gonococcal aniA promoter for NarP. Despite containing nearly identical genes for catalysing and regulating denitrification, variations in the promoter for the aniA gene appear to have been selected to enable the two pathogens to tune differentially their responses to environmental variables during the aerobic–anaerobic switch.

Carbon materials such as Graphene and carbon nano tube promise a new generation of RF NEMS devices that bring many advantages due to their very high performances such as low mass, high Young's modulus and electrical conductivity. In this paper, the properties of Graphene for RF M/NEMS applications are briefly described. We compare the mechanical behaviour of Graphene switches with metallic RF MEMS switches such as Aluminium and Gold. The analytical study and simulation results show that the actuation voltage of Al and Au switches is high (35 V) whereas the actuation voltage for the Graphene switch is low (7.7 V). Also, the switching time of Graphene switch is 3.5 ns while the switching time for metallic switches is approximately 17μs.

Increasing the capacitance ratio in RF MEMS shunt capacitive switch will increase its RF performance but also raise its actuation voltage. To improve the RF performance of the switch without increasing its capacitance ratio, this paper explores two methods: reducing the LC resonance from the mm-wave into the X-band by using an inductive bridge, and using two short high impedance transmission lines at both ends of the CPW line. Accordingly, this paper presents the design and simulation of an electro-static low actuation voltage and a very high isolation multipurpose switch with a very large bandwidth. The simulation results are presented and discussed.

This paper presents a wide band RF MEMS capacitive switch. The LC resonant frequency is reduced from mm wave to X band frequencies at down-state by using a meander type membrane, with the frequency band is being increased by adding two short high impedance lines at both ends of coplanar waveguide (CPW). Moreover, this acts as T-match circuit in up-state position and improves the matching. Simulation results demonstrate that the capacitance ratio reduces from 50 to 21.4, S21 and S11 are less than −10dB for the entire frequency band at down-state and up-state. Also, a comprehensive and complete electric model of the switch is proposed and simulation results agree well with the characteristics of the physical structure of the MEMS switch. Vpull-in and Vpull-out of this switch are 8.1V and 0.3V, respectively.

Angiogenesis-mediated progression of micrometastasis to lethal macrometastasis is the major cause of death in cancer patients. Here, using mouse models of pulmonary metastasis, we identify bone marrow (BM)–derived endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) as critical regulators of this angiogenic switch. We show that tumors induce expression of the transcription factor Id1 in the EPCs and that suppression of Id1 after metastatic colonization blocked EPC mobilization, caused angiogenesis inhibition, impaired pulmonary macrometastases, and increased survival of tumor-bearing animals. These findings establish the role of EPCs in metastatic progression in preclinical models and suggest that selective targeting of EPCs may merit investigation as a therapy for cancer patients with lung metastases.

The research focused on the design, fabrication and measurement of a low actuation voltage micro electro mechanical high frequency switch. The fabricated micro switch offers outstanding radio frequency parameters for a very large frequency band, with actuation voltage and switching time less than 20 volts and 3 micro seconds, respectively.
