This paper is studied look at the Teacher’s Assessment of Grammatical Structures (TAGS), Teacher Assessment of Spoken Language (TASL), and Cottage Acquisition Scales for Listening, Language and Speech (CASLLS) criterion-referenced language assessments as well as an inquiry into how teachers of the deaf use the TAGS currently as a teaching tool.

This paper examines the Central Institute for the Deaf’s "Grammatical Analysis of Elicited Language" (GAEL) test of expressive language and whether it identifies children with language disorders. Also examined is the relative difficulty of each of the grammatical categories sampled on the GAEL in relation to the standardization sample.

Spontaneous writing samples of deaf children with cochlear implants were analyzed for syntactic errors and other descriptive characteristics. These results were compared to a small sample of writings from hearing children.
