Full contour monolithic zirconia restorations have shown an increased popularity in the dental field over the recent years, owing to its mechanical and acceptable optical properties. However, many features of the restoration are yet to be researched and supported by clinical studies to confirm its place among the other indirect restorative materials This series of in vitro studies aimed at evaluating and comparing the optical and mechanical properties, light cure irradiance, and cement polymerization of multiple monolithic zirconia material at variable thicknesses, environments, treatments, and stabilization. Five different monolithic zirconia materials, four of which were partially stabilized and one fully stabilized were investigated. The optical properties in terms of surface gloss, translucency parameter, and contrast ratio were determined via a reflection spectrophotometer at variable thicknesses, coloring, sintering method, and after immersion in an acidic environment. Light cure irradiance and radiant exposure were quantified through the specimens at variable thicknesses and the degree of conversion of two dual-cure cements was determined via Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy. Bi-axial flexural strength was evaluated to compare between the partially and fully stabilized zirconia prepared using different coloring and sintering methods. Surface characterization was performed using a scanning electron microscope and a spinning disk confocal microscope. The surface gloss and translucency of the zirconia investigated were brand and thickness dependent with the translucency values decreasing as the thickness increased. Staining decreased the translucency of the zirconia and enhanced surface gloss as well as the flexural strength of the fully stabilized zirconia but had no effect on partially stabilized zirconia. Immersion in a corrosive acid increased surface gloss and decreased the translucency of some zirconia brands. Zirconia thickness was inversely related to the amount of light irradiance, radiant exposure, and degree of monomer conversion. Type of sintering furnace had no effect on the optical and mechanical properties of zirconia. Monolithic zirconia maybe classified as a semi-translucent material that is well influenced by the thickness, limiting its use in the esthetic zones. Conventional acid-base reaction, autopolymerizing and dual-cure cements are recommended for its cementation. Its desirable mechanical properties give it a high potential as a restoration for posterior teeth. However, close monitoring with controlled clinical studies must be determined before any definite clinical recommendations can be drawn.

Tutkimuksen tavoitteena oli selvittää bakteerien kiinnittymistä ja bakteeribiofilmin muodostumista implanttimateriaalien pinnalla. Monoliittisen zirkonian ja lasikeramien käyttö implanttikruunujen materiaaleina kasvaa jatkuvasti. Zirkoniaa käytetään myös abutmenttien materiaalina esteettisillä alueilla. Tällä hetkellä on vain vähän tutkimustietoa näiden implanttikruunumateriaalien sekä implanttikruunujen sementoimiseen käytetyn sementin pinnalla tapahtuvasta bakteeriadheesiosta ja biofilmin muodostumisesta. Bakteerien adheesiota ja biofilmin muodistumista tutkittiin neljän eri materiaalin pinnalla. Tutkimuksessa käytetyt materiaalit olivat: (1) Litiumdisilikaatti (LDS; IPS e.max CAD, Ivoclar Vivadent,kontrolli), (2) Kokonaan stabiloitu zirkonia (FSZ; Prettau Anterior, Zirkonzahn), (3) Osittain stabiloitu zirkonia (PSZ; Katana, Noritake), ja (4) Kaksoiskovetteinen sementti (DCC; Multilink hybrid abutment cement, Ivoclar Vivadent). Kaikki tutkimuksessa käytetyt materiaalit valmisteltiin ja kiillotettiin valmistajien ohjeiden mukaisesti Tutkittavat pinnat inkuboitiin Streptococcus mutans-suspensiossa +37°C:ssä asteessa. Bakteeriadheesiotestissä inkubointiaika oli 30 minuuttia ja biofilmitestissä vastaava aika oli 24 tuntia. Materiaalien pintoja tarkasteltiin myös elektronimikroskooppia käyttäen. Tutkimuksessa todettiin, että bakteeriadheesiossa oli eroja eri materiaalien välillä. Biofilmin. muodostumisessa ei todettu tilastollisesti merkittäviä eroja tutkittavien materiaalien välillä.

Sähköinen kaupankäynti (electronic commerce, EC) on jatkuvasti ja nopeasti kasvava liiketoiminnan muoto. Suurten yritysten välistä sähköistä kaupankäyntiä, EDI:ä, on harjoitettu jo noin kaksikymmentä vuotta, mutta aivan viime vuosina sähköisen kaupankäynnin suosio on kokenut räjähdysmäisen kasvun sen siirryttyä yhä kevyemmille markkinoille, pienyritysten ja jopa yksityisten kuluttajien käytettäväksi. Perinteisen EDI:n järjestelmät ovat kuitenkin suuria, raskaita ja ne kykenevät huonosti tarjoamaan nykyaikaisen sähköisen kaupankäynnin vaatimia toimintoja. Tässä on tarkoituksena esittää malli uudelle, tehokkaammalle järjestelmälle. Tavoitteena on luotettava, helposti ylläpidettävä ja suorituskyvyltään sekä ominaisuuksiltaan skaalautuva järjestelmä. Koko järjestelmä toteutetaan käyttäen oliokeskeisiä menetelmiä. Järjestelmän perustana käytetään yleistä hajautettua komponentti-arkkitehtuuria. Työn tuloksena esitetään periaatteeltaan toteuttamiskelpoinen malli nykyaikaisesta sähköisen kaupankäynnin järjestelmästä. Malli mahdollistaa tehokkaan toiminnallisuuden hajauttamisen ja tehokkaan, hyvin määritellyn liitynnän eri sovellusjärjestelmien kanssa. Tämä toteutetaan rakentamalla koko järjestelmä CORBA-arkkitehtuurin ympärille.

Electrical machine drives are the most electrical energy-consuming systems worldwide. The largest proportion of drives is found in industrial applications. There are, however many other applications that are also based on the use of electrical machines, because they have a relatively high efficiency, a low noise level, and do not produce local pollution. Electrical machines can be classified into several categories. One of the most commonly used electrical machine types (especially in the industry) is induction motors, also known as asynchronous machines. They have a mature production process and a robust rotor construction. However, in the world pursuing higher energy efficiency with reasonable investments not every application receives the advantage of using this type of motor drives. The main drawback of induction motors is the fact that they need slipcaused and thus loss-generating current in the rotor, and additional stator current for magnetic field production along with the torque-producing current. This can reduce the electric motor drive efficiency, especially in low-speed, low-power applications. Often, when high torque density is required together with low losses, it is desirable to apply permanent magnet technology, because in this case there is no need to use current to produce the basic excitation of the machine. This promotes the effectiveness of copper use in the stator, and further, there is no rotor current in these machines. Again, if permanent magnets with a high remanent flux density are used, the air gap flux density can be higher than in conventional induction motors. These advantages have raised the popularity of PMSMs in some challenging applications, such as hybrid electric vehicles (HEV), wind turbines, and home appliances. Usually, a correctly designed PMSM has a higher efficiency and consequently lower losses than its induction machine counterparts. Therefore, the use of these electrical machines reduces the energy consumption of the whole system to some extent, which can provide good motivation to apply permanent magnet technology to electrical machines. However, the cost of high performance rare earth permanent magnets in these machines may not be affordable in many industrial applications, because the tight competition between the manufacturers dictates the rules of low-cost and highly robust solutions, where asynchronous machines seem to be more feasible at the moment. Two main electromagnetic components of an electrical machine are the stator and the rotor. In the case of a conventional radial flux PMSM, the stator contains magnetic circuit lamination and stator winding, and the rotor consists of rotor steel (laminated or solid) and permanent magnets. The lamination itself does not significantly influence the total cost of the machine, even though it can considerably increase the construction complexity, as it requires a special assembly arrangement. However, thin metal sheet processing methods are very effective and economically feasible. Therefore, the cost of the machine is mainly affected by the stator winding and the permanent magnets. The work proposed in this doctoral dissertation comprises a description and analysis of two approaches of PMSM cost reduction: one on the rotor side and the other on the stator side. The first approach on the rotor side includes the use of low-cost and abundant ferrite magnets together with a tooth-coil winding topology and an outer rotor construction. The second approach on the stator side exploits the use of a modular stator structure instead of a monolithic one. PMSMs with the proposed structures were thoroughly analysed by finite element method based tools (FEM). It was found out that by implementing the described principles, some favourable characteristics of the machine (mainly concerning the machine size) will inevitable be compromised. However, the main target of the proposed approaches is not to compete with conventional rare earth PMSMs, but to reduce the price at which they can be implemented in industrial applications, keeping their dimensions at the same level or lower than those of a typical electrical machine used in the industry at the moment. The measurement results of the prototypes show that the main performance characteristics of these machines are at an acceptable level. It is shown that with certain specific actions it is possible to achieve a desirable efficiency level of the machine with the proposed cost reduction methods.

This thesis is about development broadband feed for two-mirror antenna system that match following requirements: beamwidth from 45 to 90 degrees at -3 dB level, circular polarization, absence of radiation to the lower hemisphere area. Literature review was done in the areas of the UWB antennas creation. During the work attempts were made to create a feed in a form of the quad ridged horn and "eleven" antennas. The latter is introduced as the most effective feed among all antennas discussed in thesis. Radiation patterns and other results for "eleven" antenna were obtained. Results were saved as far field sources and placed slightly below focal point into the two-mirror antenna system, because phase center of the “eleven” antenna is predominantly shifted upwards. Directivity patterns for the two-mirror system were obtained and the conclusions about the work results have been made

Tämän tutkimuksen lähtökohtana oli havainto siitä, että maailmanlaajuisen jihadismin toimet muistuttivat suuresti kumouksellista sodankäyntiä. Tarkastelemalla ilmiötä lähemmin oli nopeasti havaittavissa, että globaaliksi jihadistiseksi liikkeeksi tunnistettava toimija kävi ja oli kehittänyt taitoa käydä tällaista sotaa. Näin keskeiseksi tavoitteeksi tutkimukselle muodostuikin selvittää miten globaali jihadistinen liike oli kehittänyt kumouksellisen sodankäynnin sotataitoa ja sotataidollista ajattelua. Tämän tutkimuksen asetelma on perusluonteeltaan vertaileva. Se tarkastelee teoriaohjaavan sisällönanalyysin kautta kumouksellista sotataidollista kehitystä, tarkemmin sotataidollisen ajattelun kehitystä, vertaamalla globaalin jihadistisen liikkeen strategista ajattelua kumouksellista sotaa käyneiden strategien klassisiin mallinnuksiin. Strategioiden välinen vertailu suoritettiin tarkastelemalla globaalin jihadistisen liikkeen strategista ajattelua klassisista strategioista löydettävien vertailutasojen kautta. Globaalia jihadismia tarkastellessa kävi selville sen monisyinen luonne. Tätä toimijaa ei sellaisenaan voi kutsua yhdeksi organisaatioksi, eikä pelkästään ideologiaksi. Globaali jihadistinen liike tässä tutkimuksessa hahmotettiin sosiaaliseksi liikkeeksi, joka pitää sisällään yhteisen päämäärän eteen pyrkiviä, samaa ideologiaa tunnustavia organisaatiota, soluja ja yksittäisiä toimijoita. Vertailevan analyysin perusteella voidaan sanoa, että sosiaalisliikemäisestä luonteesta huolimatta ja osaltaan sen ansiosta globaali jihadistinen liike on kyennyt kehittämään kumouksellisen sodan strategista ajattelua suuntaan, jossa hajaantunut organisaatiomuoto, rajaamaton toiminta-alue ja kauas tulevaisuuteen tähtäävä tavoitteenasettelu ovat yhteiseen ideologiseen katsontaan sitoutuneina muovanneet liikkeestä toimijan, joka on kyennyt selviämään hengissä mittavista vastatoimista huolimatta. Se on myös kyennyt ylläpitämään itsetarkoitukseksi muodostunutta operaatiotahtia tavalla joka asettaa modernille turvallisuusympäristölle jatkuvia ja vakavia haasteita.

In my thesis I examine J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings (1954-55), the fantasy epic written on the basis of a fictional universe created by Tolkien, complete with elves, dwarves and other mystical creatures – with languages, alphabets and grammar created for all. While rich linguistically, Tolkien writes a decidedly male description of his world, often neglecting any acknowledgement of female existence. Tolkien’s monolithic stature amongst other fantasy authors made me conduct a feminist reading of The Lord of the Rings, with an eye for the way female experience is marginalized to the point of omission. Tolkien’s linguistic accomplishments have overshadowed the illogical aspects of his work, namely the omission of genders, societal classes and features of society necessary for the fictional universe to retain its cohesion. This cohesion suffers from a totally male experience in the novel which is willfully blind to these features I listed. My theoretical framework is built on ideas in Toril Moi’s Sex, Gender and the Body (2005) and bell hook’s Feminism is For Everybody (2000). Michel Foucault’s ideas of power and hidden histories assist in performing a close reading of the source text and interpreting the results. My thesis focuses on the transformation that the values associated with the concept of equality have undergone. This is best illustrated in the treatment of the few female characters in the novel – Galadriel, Éowyn and Arwen – as their beauty and existence interferes with the ordering of the male-dominated world.

This thesis work deals with a mathematical description of flow in polymeric pipe and in a specific peristaltic pump. This study involves fluid-structure interaction analysis in presence of complex-turbulent flows treated in an arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) framework. The flow simulations are performed in COMSOL 4.4, as 2D axial symmetric model, and ABAQUS 6.14.1, as 3D model with symmetric boundary conditions. In COMSOL, the fluid and structure problems are coupled by monolithic algorithm, while ABAQUS code links ABAQUS CFD and ABAQUS Standard solvers with single block-iterative partitioned algorithm. For the turbulent features of the flow, the fluid model in both codes is described by RNG k-ϵ. The structural model is described, on the basis of the pipe material, by Elastic models or Hyperelastic Neo-Hookean models with Rayleigh damping properties. In order to describe the pulsatile fluid flow after the pumping process, the available data are often defective for the fluid problem. Engineering measurements are normally able to provide average pressure or velocity at a cross-section. This problem has been analyzed by McDonald's and Womersley's work for average pressure at fixed cross section by Fourier analysis since '50, while nowadays sophisticated techniques including Finite Elements and Finite Volumes exist to study the flow. Finally, we set up peristaltic pipe simulations in ABAQUS code, by using the same model previously tested for the fl uid and the structure.
