Työssä tarkasteltiin älykkäiden sähköverkkojen näkökulmasta, millaisia toiminnallisuuksia kiinteistöautomaatiojärjestelmiltä odotetaan ja miten markkinoilla olevat järjestelmät vastaavat näihin odotuksiin. Lisäksi arvioitiin, kuinka taloudellisesti kannattavia valittuihin automaatiojärjestelmiin kuuluvat energian käytön hallintaan liittyvät toiminnallisuudet ovat sähkönkäyttäjien näkökulmasta. Lopuksi tehtiin lyhyt katsaus kiinteistöautomaatiojärjestelmien tulevaisuuden näkymiin. Kiinteistöautomaatiolla voidaan vaikuttaa energian käytön tehokkuuteen ohjaamalla esimerkiksi valaistusta, ilmanvaihtoa, ilmastointia, lämmitystä ja sähkölaitteita. Eräs vaihtoehto on toteuttaa ohjauksen avulla markkinapohjaista kysyntäjoustoa, jossa kiinteistön sähköjärjestelmän toimintaa säädetään sähkön hinnan perusteella. Kiinteistössä tulee myös voida tehdä laitekohtaisia energiankulutuksen mittauksia, jotka antavat tietoa sähkönkäyttäjille eri laitteiden sähkönkulutuksesta. Kiinteistöautomaation ja sähkön pientuotannon yleistymisen myötä on myös etähallittavien virtuaalivoimaloiden toteuttaminen tulossa mahdolliseksi. Lisäksi laskettiin sähkönkäyttäjän kannalta lämmityksen, valaistuksen ja ilmanvaihdon ohjauksen kannattavuutta ja selvitettiin, että tutkituissa esimerkkijärjestelmissä suurin säästöpotentiaali on lämmityksen ohjauksessa.

Diplomityön tavoitteena oli kehittää Dust Control Systems Oy:n nykyistä suunnittelujärjestelmää yrityksen toiminnan laadun ja suunnittelun tehokkuuden parantamiseksi. Suunnittelun suurin pullonkaula on valmistusdokumenttien tuottaminen, joten keskeinen tehtävä oli dokumenttien laadun parantaminen ja tuottamisen nopeuttaminen. Lisäksi tärkeää oli selkeyttää nykyistä nimikkeiden hallintaa ja ylläpitoa. Kehitystyö keskittyi suurelta osin suunnittelujärjestelmän ohjelmistoympäristön päivittämiseen ja sen muokkaamiseen. Teoriaosuudessa käsiteltiin nykyaikaista suunnittelua ja sen kehittämismahdollisuuksia. Lisäksi tarkasteltiin suunnittelun automatisoinnin tuomia hyötyjä sekä erilaisia tuotannon tehostamismenetelmiä. Kehitysosiossa tutkittiin yrityksen nykyistä suunnittelujärjestelmää ja ohjelmistoympäristöä, tuotteiden asettamia vaatimuksia sekä järjestelmän puutteita. Näihin liittyi suuresti yhteistyö henkilöstön sekä ohjelmistotoimittajan kanssa. Tutkimuksen perusteella ryhdyttiin kehittämään uutta järjestelmäkokonaisuutta, johon liitettiin tarvittavia ohjelmistoja ja päivityksiä. Käyttöönottoa varten ohjelmistot konfiguroitiin yrityksen tarpeita vastaaviksi. Työn tuloksena saatiin kehittyneempi ja nykyaikaisempi suunnittelujärjestelmä ja ohjelmistoympäristö. Suunnittelijoiden työtaakkaa saadaan kevennettyä toistuvien työvaiheiden pidemmälle viedyllä automatisoinnilla. Uudistettu ohjelmistoympäristö luo osaltaan ehtoja ja sääntöjä, jotta virheitä syntyy yhä vähemmän. Lisäksi suunnittelun läpimenoaikaa saadaan lyhennettyä parannetulla dokumenttien tuottamisella.

Ulosottolaitoksen rakenneuudistushankkeessa selvitetään miten ulosottotyötä olisi mahdollista tehdä tehokkaammin. Toiminnan menoja on tulevina vuosina sopeutettava vähäisempiin määrärahoihin, johtuen hallinnonalan säästövelvoitteista. Tutkimuksen tavoitteena on selvittää Ulosottolaitoksen maksuvelvoitteen täytäntöönpanoprosessin työvoimakustannuksia ja tutkia miten työvoimakustannusvähennyksiin olisi mahdollista päästä. Työssä selvitetään prosessin työvaiheet, minkä jälkeen työvoimakustannuksia lasketaan aikaperusteisella toimintolaskentamenetelmällä. Laskennassa tarvittavaa materiaalia on kerätty haastatteluin, sekä Ulosottolaitoksen tilastotiedoista ja kirjallisuudesta. Tulokset osoittavat prosessin yleisimpien työtehtävien tekemisen aiheuttavan noin 24,3 miljoonaa euroa työvoimakustannuksia vuodessa. Palveluiden sähköistämisen ja työtehtävien automatisoinnin lisäämisellä sekä töiden uudelleenorganisoinnilla olisi mahdollista vähentää vuosityövoimakustannuksia noin 6,2 miljoonaa euroa. Osa työtehtävistä voitaisiin myös keskittää työkuorman tasaamiseksi. Jatkossa tulee selvittää ovatko muutokset mahdollista toteuttaa kokonaisuudessaan.

IoT consists of essentially thousands of tiny sensor nodes interconnected to the internet, each one of which executes the programmed functions under memory and power limita- tions. The sensor nodes are distributed mainly for gathering data in various situations. IoT envisions the future technologies such as e-health, smart city, auto-mobiles automa- tion, construction sites automation, and smart home. Secure communication of data under memory and energy constraints is major challenge in IoT. Authentication is the first and important phase of secure communication. This study presents a protocol to authenticate resource constraint devices in physical proximity by solely using the shared wireless communication interfaces. This model of authentication only relies on the abundance of ambient radio signals to authenticate in less than a second. To evaluate the designed protocol, SkyMotes are emulated in a network environment simulated by Contiki/COOJA. Results presented during this study proves that this approach is immune against passive and active attacks. An adversary located as near as two meters can be identified in less than a second with minimal expense of energy. Since, only radio device is used as required hardware for the authentication, this technique is scalable and interoperable to heterogeneous nature of IoT.

The aim of the study was to examine problems that small and medium enterprises are facing during the implementation of business process automation projects. Study reveals problems from the point of view of companies who are implementing automation projects and from the point of view of IT-integrators who are specifying in IT solutions for small and medium companies.

This bachelor’s thesis is a part of the research project realized in the summer 2011 in Lappeenranta University of Technology. The goal of the project was to create an automation concept for controlling an electrically excited synchronous motor. This thesis concentrates on the setup and requirements specification part of the concept. The setup consists of ABB AC500 as the PLC master device, DCS800 as an exciter and ACS800 as a frequency converter. The ACS800 frequency converter uses permanent magnet synchronous machine software to control the stator’s magnetic field, the DC drive handles the excitation and the AC500 PLC master controls the communication and functionality of the system. The requirements specification briefly explains the general over-view of the concept, the use and functionality of the PLC program and the requirements needed for the whole concept and the PLC program to work as intended.

Supply chain finance, a financial product provided by the bank, has gained increasing attention and popularity over the last few years. Supply chain finance helps the corporate clients to optimize their financial flows along the supply chain. One characteristic of supply chain finance is that it aims to provide automated solutions. Therefore, the business process automation of supply chain finance is a very interesting and important topic for study. In this study, the business process automation of supply chain finance within the case organization, ING, is analysed. The purpose is to: (1) Identify the benefits to understand the importance to automate supply chain finance business process; (2) Find out the existing automation degree in the supply chain finance business process within the case bank to see what’s the situation now and how to improve in the future; (3) Discover the challenges in the further automation of supply chain finance business process. Firstly, the study finds out that supply chain finance business process automation can bring many benefits to the bank. Automation can improve productivity by using less time and human labour in the business process, and by providing scalable solutions. Automation can also improve quality of the service by reducing the human errors. Last but not least, automation can improve internal governance by providing enhanced visibility of the business process. Because of these potential benefits, many banks are actively seeking solutions to automate their supply chain finance business process. Then, the current automation situation with the case bank is analysed with the help of business process modelling. The supply chain finance business process within the case bank can be further divided into several sub processes: daily transaction, buyer sales and setup, supplier onboarding, contract management, customer services and supports, and contract termination. The study finds out that the daily transaction process is already a highly automated, which is carried out through the web-based trading platform. However, for other business the automation degree is relatively low. Among these business processes, supplier onboarding is most needed for further automation. Then, some solutions are also suggested to automate the supplier onboarding business process. In the end, the study also foresees some challenges during the further automation of supply chain finance business process in the case bank. Some suggestions are also given to deal with these challenges.

The goal of this thesis is to study how a solution-oriented business-to-business company can utilize its brand as a strategic asset by using the concepts of brand identity and brand image. The study analyses the intended brand message (identity) contrasting it with the customer perceptions (image) to reveal points of parity and congruence. The study uses a case company as an example and discusses the benefits of brand management as well. Internally, brands can be studied by performing a set of interviews amongst top and middle management. The interviews need to consider the various elements of branding from associations to differentiation and value creation. Customers’ perceptions can be reliably studied via online survey designed to compare the intended brand message with customers’ experiences. From the perspective of industrial management the incentive for brand development lies in both monetary and managerial benefits. In literature the four essential benefits of B2B branding are risk dilution, efficiency of communications, strategic direction and price premiums. As a result, suggestive models for brand identity and image were devised and compared. The Case Company perceives itself as a technically oriented open-integrator, with a strong focus on reliability and customer service. Customers agree with the picture in general, but there are some points of parity as well: they are quite satisfied with the company and perceive it as reliable and providing the promised value. The problematic areas revolve around customer interaction and maintaining the leadership position. The results confirm previous findings in B2B branding theory, where the reliability and credibility of the supplier are in major role. The results also suggest a holistic, corporate approach on branding.

The Laboratory of Intelligent Machine researches and develops energy-efficient power transmissions and automation for mobile construction machines and industrial processes. The laboratory's particular areas of expertise include mechatronic machine design using virtual technologies and simulators and demanding industrial robotics. The laboratory has collaborated extensively with industrial actors and it has participated in significant international research projects, particularly in the field of robotics. For years, dSPACE tools were the lonely hardware which was used in the lab to develop different control algorithms in real-time. dSPACE's hardware systems are in widespread use in the automotive industry and are also employed in drives, aerospace, and industrial automation. But new competitors are developing new sophisticated systems and their features convinced the laboratory to test new products. One of these competitors is National Instrument (NI). In order to get to know the specifications and capabilities of NI tools, an agreement was made to test a NI evolutionary system. This system is used to control a 1-D hydraulic slider. The objective of this research project is to develop a control scheme for the teleoperation of a hydraulically driven manipulator, and to implement a control algorithm between human and machine interaction, and machine and task environment interaction both on NI and dSPACE systems simultaneously and to compare the results.

This study applied qualitative case study method for solving what kind of benefits salespeople and their customers perceived to gain when sales reps used a specific sales force automation tool, that defined the values and identified segment that best fit to each customer. The data consisting of four interviews was collected using semi-structured individual method and analyzed with thematic analysis technique. The analysis revealed five salespeople perceived benefits and four customer perceived benefits. Salespeople perceived benefits were improvements in customer knowledge, guidance of sales operations, salesperson-customer relationship building, time management and growing performance. Customer perceived benefits were information transmission, improved customer service, customer-salesperson relationship building and development of operations, which of the last was found as a new previously unrecognized customer benefit.

Smart home implementation in residential buildings promises to optimize energy usage and save significant amount of energy simply due to a better understanding of user's energy usage profile. Apart from the energy optimisation prospects of this technology, it also aims to guarantee occupants significant amount of comfort and remote control over home appliances both at home locations and at remote places. However, smart home investment just like any other kind of investment requires an adequate measurement and justification of the economic gains it could proffer before its realization. These economic gains could differ for different occupants due to their inherent behaviours and tendencies. Thus it is pertinent to investigate the various behaviours and tendencies of occupants in different domain of interests and to measure the value of the energy savings accrued by smart home implementations in these domains of interest in order to justify such economic gains. This thesis investigates two domains of interests (the rented apartment and owned apartment) for primarily two behavioural tendencies (Finland and Germany) obtained from observation and corroborated by conducted interviews to measure the payback time and Return on Investment (ROI) of their smart home implementations. Also, similar measures are obtained for identified Australian use case. The research finding reveals that building automation for the Finnish behavioural tendencies seems to proffers a better ROI and payback time for smart home implementations.

This master’s thesis studies the case company’s current purchase invoice process and the challenges that are related to it. Like most of other master’s thesis this study consists of both theoretical- and empirical parts. The purpose of this work is to combine theoretical and empirical parts together so that the theoretical part brings value to the empirical case study. The case company’s main business is frequency converters for both low voltage AC & DC drives and medium voltage AC Drives which are used across all industries and applications. The main focus of this study is on the current invoice process modelling. When modelling the existing process with discipline and care, current challenges can be understood better. Empirical study relays heavily on interviews and existing, yet fragmented, data. This, along with own calculations and analysis, creates the foundation for the empirical part of this master’s thesis.

Recent developments in automation, robotics and artificial intelligence have given a push to a wider usage of these technologies in recent years, and nowadays, driverless transport systems are already state-of-the-art on certain legs of transportation. This has given a push for the maritime industry to join the advancement. The case organisation, AAWA initiative, is a joint industry-academia research consortium with the objective of developing readiness for the first commercial autonomous solutions, exploiting state-of-the-art autonomous and remote technology. The initiative develops both autonomous and remote operation technology for navigation, machinery, and all on-board operating systems. The aim of this study is to develop a model with which to estimate and forecast the operational costs, and thus enable comparisons between manned and autonomous cargo vessels. The building process of the model is also described and discussed. Furthermore, the model’s aim is to track and identify the critical success factors of the chosen ship design, and to enable monitoring and tracking of the incurred operational costs as the life cycle of the vessel progresses. The study adopts the constructive research approach, as the aim is to develop a construct to meet the needs of a case organisation. Data has been collected through discussions and meeting with consortium members and researchers, as well as through written and internal communications material. The model itself is built using activity-based life cycle costing, which enables both realistic cost estimation and forecasting, as well as the identification of critical success factors due to the process-orientation adopted from activity-based costing and the statistical nature of Monte Carlo simulation techniques. As the model was able to meet the multiple aims set for it, and the case organisation was satisfied with it, it could be argued that activity-based life cycle costing is the method with which to conduct cost estimation and forecasting in the case of autonomous cargo vessels. The model was able to perform the cost analysis and forecasting, as well as to trace the critical success factors. Later on, it also enabled, albeit hypothetically, monitoring and tracking of the incurred costs. By collecting costs this way, it was argued that the activity-based LCC model is able facilitate learning from and continuous improvement of the autonomous vessel. As with the building process of the model, an individual approach was chosen, while still using the implementation and model building steps presented in existing literature. This was due to two factors: the nature of the model and – perhaps even more importantly – the nature of the case organisation. Furthermore, the loosely organised network structure means that knowing the case organisation and its aims is of great importance when conducting a constructive research.
