The number of electric vehicles grows continuously and the implementation of charging electric vehicles is an important issue for the future. Increasing amount of electric vehicles can cause problems to distribution grid by increasing peak load. Currently charging of electric vehicles is uncontrolled, but as the amount of electric vehicles grows, smart charg-ing (controlled charging) will be one possible solution to handle this situation. In this thesis smart charging of electric vehicles is examined from electricity retailers` point of view. The purpose is to find out plausible saving potentials of smart charging, when it´s controlled by price signal. Saving potential is calculated by comparing costs of price signal controlled charging and uncontrolled charging.

Työssä tarkasteltiin sähkö- ja lämpöenergian tuotantomenetelmien ympäristöllistä kilpailukykyä osana yhdyskunnan energiajärjestelmää. Sähkö- lämpöenergian tuotantomenetelmiä vertailtiin keskenään aiheutuvien kasvihuonekaasupäästöjen perusteella. Tarkastelu toteutettiin elinkaariarviointimenetelmällä. Työssä mallinnettiin pääasiassa uusiutuviin energialähteisiin perustuvia menetelmiä yhdyskunnan vuotuisen sähkö- ja lämpöenergiantarpeen täyttämiseksi. Elinkaariarviointimallin avulla vertailtiin keskenään aurinko- ja tuulisähköpainotteista ja CHP-painotteista energiajärjestelmää. Lisäksi työssä arvioitiin aurinko- ja tuulisähköntuotantoa sekä CHP-tuotantoa nettoenergianäkökulmasta. Työn tulosten pohjalta voidaan olettaa, että kokonaisvaltaisesti paras energianhankintavaihtoehto on usean eri sähkö- ja lämpöenergiantuotantomenetelmän yhdistelmä. Alhainen päästötaso tietyssä kategoriassa on yhdentekevää, jos energiaa ei ole saatavissa silloin, kun sitä tarvitaan. Lisäksi on tärkeää huomata, että uusiutuvien energialähteiden hyödynnettävyys riippuu vahvasti alueellisista erityispiirteistä, kuten aurinko- ja tuuliolosuhteista. Tästä johtuen kestävän energiajärjestelmän suunnittelussa alueellisten ominaisuuksien huomiointi on tärkeää. Mikä tietyllä alueella osoittautuu parhaimmaksi ratkaisuksi, ei välttämättä ole sitä toisenlaisessa ympäristössä.

Innovative gas cooled reactors, such as the pebble bed reactor (PBR) and the gas cooled fast reactor (GFR) offer higher efficiency and new application areas for nuclear energy. Numerical methods were applied and developed to analyse the specific features of these reactor types with fully three dimensional calculation models. In the first part of this thesis, discrete element method (DEM) was used for a physically realistic modelling of the packing of fuel pebbles in PBR geometries and methods were developed for utilising the DEM results in subsequent reactor physics and thermal-hydraulics calculations. In the second part, the flow and heat transfer for a single gas cooled fuel rod of a GFR were investigated with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) methods. An in-house DEM implementation was validated and used for packing simulations, in which the effect of several parameters on the resulting average packing density was investigated. The restitution coefficient was found out to have the most significant effect. The results can be utilised in further work to obtain a pebble bed with a specific packing density. The packing structures of selected pebble beds were also analysed in detail and local variations in the packing density were observed, which should be taken into account especially in the reactor core thermal-hydraulic analyses. Two open source DEM codes were used to produce stochastic pebble bed configurations to add realism and improve the accuracy of criticality calculations performed with the Monte Carlo reactor physics code Serpent. Russian ASTRA criticality experiments were calculated. Pebble beds corresponding to the experimental specifications within measurement uncertainties were produced in DEM simulations and successfully exported into the subsequent reactor physics analysis. With the developed approach, two typical issues in Monte Carlo reactor physics calculations of pebble bed geometries were avoided. A novel method was developed and implemented as a MATLAB code to calculate porosities in the cells of a CFD calculation mesh constructed over a pebble bed obtained from DEM simulations. The code was further developed to distribute power and temperature data accurately between discrete based reactor physics and continuum based thermal-hydraulics models to enable coupled reactor core calculations. The developed method was also found useful for analysing sphere packings in general. CFD calculations were performed to investigate the pressure losses and heat transfer in three dimensional air cooled smooth and rib roughened rod geometries, housed inside a hexagonal flow channel representing a sub-channel of a single fuel rod of a GFR. The CFD geometry represented the test section of the L-STAR experimental facility at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology and the calculation results were compared to the corresponding experimental results. Knowledge was gained of the adequacy of various turbulence models and of the modelling requirements and issues related to the specific application. The obtained pressure loss results were in a relatively good agreement with the experimental data. Heat transfer in the smooth rod geometry was somewhat under predicted, which can partly be explained by unaccounted heat losses and uncertainties. In the rib roughened geometry heat transfer was severely under predicted by the used realisable k − epsilon turbulence model. An additional calculation with a v2 − f turbulence model showed significant improvement in the heat transfer results, which is most likely due to the better performance of the model in separated flow problems. Further investigations are suggested before using CFD to make conclusions of the heat transfer performance of rib roughened GFR fuel rod geometries. It is suggested that the viewpoints of numerical modelling are included in the planning of experiments to ease the challenging model construction and simulations and to avoid introducing additional sources of uncertainties. To facilitate the use of advanced calculation approaches, multi-physical aspects in experiments should also be considered and documented in a reasonable detail.

The energy consumption of IT equipments is becoming an issue of increasing importance. In particular, network equipments such as routers and switches are major contributors to the energy consumption of internet. Therefore it is important to understand how the relationship between input parameters such as bandwidth, number of active ports, traffic-load, hibernation-mode and their impact on energy consumption of a switch. In this paper, the energy consumption of a switch is analyzed in extensive experiments. A fuzzy rule-based model of energy consumption of a switch is proposed based on the result of experiments. The model can be used to predict the energy saving when deploying new switches by controlling the parameters to achieve desired energy consumption and subsequent performance. Furthermore, the model can also be used for further researches on energy saving techniques such as energy-efficient routing protocol, dynamic link shutdown, etc.

The increasing emphasis on energy efficiency is starting to yield results in the reduction in greenhouse gas emissions; however, the effort is still far from sufficient. Therefore, new technical solutions that will enhance the efficiency of power generation systems are required to maintain the sustainable growth rate, without spoiling the environment. A reduction in greenhouse gas emissions is only possible with new low-carbon technologies, which enable high efficiencies. The role of the rotating electrical machine development is significant in the reduction of global emissions. A high proportion of the produced and consumed electrical energy is related to electrical machines. One of the technical solutions that enables high system efficiency on both the energy production and consumption sides is high-speed electrical machines. This type of electrical machines has a high system overall efficiency, a small footprint, and a high power density compared with conventional machines. Therefore, high-speed electrical machines are favoured by the manufacturers producing, for example, microturbines, compressors, gas compression applications, and air blowers. High-speed machine technology is challenging from the design point of view, and a lot of research is in progress both in academia and industry regarding the solution development. The solid technical basis is of importance in order to make an impact in the industry considering the climate change. This work describes the multidisciplinary design principles and material development in high-speed electrical machines. First, high-speed permanent magnet synchronous machines with six slots, two poles, and tooth-coil windings are discussed in this doctoral dissertation. These machines have unique features, which help in solving rotordynamic problems and reducing the manufacturing costs. Second, the materials for the high-speed machines are discussed in this work. The materials are among the key limiting factors in electrical machines, and to overcome this limit, an in-depth analysis of the material properties and behavior is required. Moreover, high-speed machines are sometimes operating in a harsh environment because they need to be as close as possible to the rotating tool and fully exploit their advantages. This sets extra requirements for the materials applied.

The majority of research work carried out in the field of Operations-Research uses methods and algorithms to optimize the pick-up and delivery problem. Most studies aim to solve the vehicle routing problem, to accommodate optimum delivery orders, vehicles etc. This paper focuses on green logistics approach, where existing Public Transport infrastructure capability of a city is used for the delivery of small and medium sized packaged goods thus, helping improve the situation of urban congestion and greenhouse gas emissions reduction. It carried out a study to investigate the feasibility of the proposed multi-agent based simulation model, for efficiency of cost, time and energy consumption. Multimodal Dijkstra Shortest Path algorithm and Nested Monte Carlo Search have been employed for a two-phase algorithmic approach used for generation of time based cost matrix. The quality of the tour is dependent on the efficiency of the search algorithm implemented for plan generation and route planning. The results reveal a definite advantage of using Public Transportation over existing delivery approaches in terms of energy efficiency.

Kasvihuonekaasujen päästökauppa ja vihreät sertifikaatit liittyvät kehitysvaiheessa olevaan ilmastopoliittiseen kokonaisuuteen, jonka tarkoitus on rajoittaa ihmisen toiminnasta aiheutuvaa kasvihuoneilmiön voimistumista. Työssä tutkittiin Euroopan Unionin sisäisen päästökaupan ja vihreiden sertifikaattien vaikutusta energian toimittajaan. Tarkastelu tehtiin kohdeyrityksinä toimineiden yritysten näkökulmasta keskittyen energianhankintatapojen kilpailukykyyn ja kustannusmuutoksiin sekä niiden vaikutusten selvittämiseen. Päästökauppa tulee toteutuessaan heikentämään energiantuotannossa käytettyjen fossiilisten polttoaineiden ja turpeen kilpailukykyä hiilidioksidipäästöttömiin tuotantomuotoihin nähden ja aiheuttamaan lisäkustannuksia hiilidioksidia aiheuttavien tuotantomuotojen käytölle. Vihreät sertifikaatit ovat tapa tukea uusiutuvista energianlähteistä tuotettua sähköä. Niistä on kehittymässä Euroopassa erilaisia järjestelmiä eikä yhtenäisten eurooppalaisten markkinoiden toteutumisesta ole varmuutta. Suomalaisiin sähköntoimittajiin vihreät sertifikaatit voivat vaikuttaa myös, mikäli Suomeen perustetaan kansallinen sertifikaattijärjestelmä tai sähköntuottajat pystyvät hyödyntämään muiden maiden järjestelmiä.

Through indisputable evidence of climate change and its link to the greenhouse gas emissions comes the necessity for change in energy production infrastructure during the coming decades. Through political conventions and restrictions energy industry is pushed toward using bigger share of renewable energy sources as energy supply. In addition to climate change, sustainable energy supply is another major issue for future development plans, but neither of these should come with unbearable price. All the power production types have environmental effects as well as strengths and weaknesses. Although each change comes with a price, right track in minimising the environmental impacts and energy supply security can be found by combining all possible low-carbon technologies and by improving energy efficiency in all sectors, for creating a new power production infrastructure of tolerable energy price and of minor environmental effects. GEMIS-Global Emission Model for Integrated Systems is a life-cycle analysis program which was used in this thesis to make indicative energy models for Finland’s future energy supply. Results indicate that the energy supply must comprise both high capacity nuclear power as well as large variation of renewable energy sources for minimization of all environmental effects and keeping energy price reasonable.

Päästöjen rajoittaminen ja seuranta on tullut yhä ajankohtaisemmaksi 2000-luvulla ilmastonmuutoksen edetessä. Varsinkin kasvihuonekaasupäästöihin kiinnitetään suurta huomiota, joista yleisimmin tarkastelun kohteena on hiilidioksidi. Tuotteen tai palvelun aiheuttamaa ympäristökuormaa kuvaamaan on kehitetty käsitteet ekologinen jalanjälki ja hiilijalanjälki. Ensimmäinen kuvaa koko ympäristökuormituksen määrää, ja jälkimmäinen hiilidioksidipäästöjen määrää. Ajatus tähän työhön kehittyi mietittäessä ajankohtaista, uutta sovellusta paikkatietotekniikalle. Paikkatietojärjestelmien käyttöä liikenteen päästöjen seurantaan ei tiettävästi ole aikaisemmin laajemmalti tutkittu. Sen sijaan niitä käytetään kokeiluluontoisesti esimerkiksi ajoneuvojen vakuutusmaksujen suuruuden määräämiseen. Teknisesti käyttö kyseiseen tarkoitukseen on melko samantyyppistä kuin tässä työssä tutkittavaan päästöjen seurantaan. Tässä työssä tutkittiin yleisluontoisesti paikkatietotekniikan soveltuvuutta päästöjen seurantaan. Tarkoituksena ei ollut rakentaa täysin toimiva järjestelmää, vaan tehdä kokeita prototyypin avulla.

Euroopan unionin energiapolitiikka on luonut paineen parantaa energiatehokkuutta kaikilla energiankäytön aloilla. Merkittävä osa energiasta kulutetaan liikenteessä, joten sähköautojen käyttöönotolla voidaan parantaa energiatehokkuutta merkittävästi. Tämän vuoksi on tarkasteltava sähköautojen laajamittaisen levinneisyyden aiheuttamia vaikutuksia sähköverkolle. Tässä diplomityössä tarkastellaan sähköautojen pikalatauksen verkkovaikutuksia. Tarkastelu painottuu kotilatauksen tarkasteluun taajamissa ja maaseudulla. Kuormituksen kasvu simuloidaan hyödyntäen sähköauton lataukselle laskettua kuormituskäyrää, jonka laskenta perustuu keskimääräiseen henkilöauton liikkumiseen, joka on saatavilla Suomen henkilöliikennetutkimuksesta. Simuloinnin tulosten perusteella sähköauton pikalatauksen verkkovaikutukset ovat merkittäviä keskijänniteverkossa ja pienjänniteverkossa. Suuremmat vaikutukset kohdistuvat pienjänniteverkkoon.

Työssä määritettiin luokan 2 eläinperäisistä sivutuotteista liikennekäyttöön tuotettujen biodieselin ja biometaanin elinkaaren aikaiset kasvihuonekaasupäästöt ja tuotantoprosessien energiankulutukset perustuen kirjallisuuslähteistä saatuihin lähtötietoihin. Tätä kautta tutkittiin yhdistelmäprosessia, jossa tuotetaan molempia polttoaineita ja selvitettiin onko tällaisella tuotantotavalla mahdollista vähentää päästöjä ja parantaa polttoaineiden tuotannon energiatehokkuutta. Kasvihuone-kaasupäästöjen laskentamenetelmä pohjautuu direktiivissä 2009/28/EY annettuun ohjeistukseen ja eri kasvihuonekaasupäästöjen karakterisointi IPCC:n sadan vuoden tarkastelumalliin. Käytännön laskenta suoritettiin standardien SFS-EN ISO 14040 ja 14044 määrittelemän elinkaariarviointiselvityksen muodossa. Työssä käytetyn laskentamenetelmän ja tarkasteluun valittujen tuotanto-teknologioiden perusteella lasketut tulokset osoittavat, että yhdistelmäprosessilla ei saavuteta suurempia päästövähenemiä eikä parempaa energiatehokkuutta kuin nykyisin käytössä olevilla tuotantotavoilla. Tulokset ovat kuitenkin hyvin herkkiä laskennassa tehtyjen oletusten ja käytettyjen lähtötietojen vaihtelulle sekä valittujen laskentamenetelmien muutoksille. Suurin päästöjä ja energiankulutusta aiheuttava yksittäinen tekijä on kaikissa tuotejärjestelmissä luokan 2 sivutuotteiden esikäsittelyssä vaadittavaan steri-lointiin tarvittavan lämmön tuotanto. Tutkituissa tuotejärjestelmissä lämpö tuotetaan kokonaan tai osittain fossiilisilla polttoaineilla. Kasvihuone-kaasupäästöjä olisi mahdollista alentaa merkittävästi siirtymällä lämmön tuotannossa kokonaan uusiutuviin polttoaineisiin. Sterilointi on lain edellyttämä käsittelytapa ja siksi energiankulutusta on vallitsevissa olosuhteissa hyvin vaikea pienentää merkittävästi.

Lignocellulosic biomasses (e.g., wood and straws) are a potential renewable source for the production of a wide variety of chemicals that could be used to replace those currently produced by petrochemical industry. This would lead to lower greenhouse gas emissions and waste amounts, and to economical savings. There are many possible pathways available for the manufacturing of chemicals from lignocellulosic biomasses. One option is to hydrolyze the cellulose and hemicelluloses of these biomasses into monosaccharides using concentrated sulfuric acid as catalyst. This process is an efficient method for producing monosaccharides which are valuable platforn chemicals. Also other valuable products are formed in the hydrolysis. Unfortunately, the concentrated acid hydrolysis has been deemed unfeasible mainly due to high chemical consumption resulting from the need to remove sulfuric acid from the obtained hydrolysates prior to the downstream processing of the monosaccharides. Traditionally, this has been done by neutralization with lime. This, however, results in high chemical consumption. In addition, the by-products formed in the hydrolysis are not removed and may, thus, hinder the monosaccharide processing. In order to improve the feasibility of the concentrated acid hydrolysis, the chemical consumption should be decreased by recycling of sulfuric acid without neutralization. Furthermore, the monosaccharides and the other products formed in the hydrolysis should be recovered selectively for efficient downstream processing. The selective recovery of the hydrolysis by-products would have additional economical benefits on the process due to their high value. In this work, the use of chromatographic fractionation for the recycling of sulfuric acid and the selective recovery of the main components from the hydrolysates formed in the concentrated acid hydrolysis was investigated. Chromatographic fractionation based on the electrolyte exclusion with gel type strong acid cation exchange resins in acid (H+) form as a stationary phase was studied. A systematic experimental and model-based study regarding the separation task at hand was conducted. The phenomena affecting the separation were determined and their effects elucidated. Mathematical models that take accurately into account these phenomena were derived and used in the simulation of the fractionation process. The main components of the concentrated acid hydrolysates (sulfuric acid, monosaccharides, and acetic acid) were included into this model. Performance of the fractionation process was investigated experimentally and by simulations. Use of different process options was also studied. Sulfuric acid was found to have a significant co-operative effect on the sorption of the other components. This brings about interesting and beneficial effects in the column operations. It is especially beneficial for the separation of sulfuric acid and the monosaccharides. Two different approaches for the modelling of the sorption equilibria were investigated in this work: a simple empirical approach and a thermodynamically consistent approach (the Adsorbed Solution theory). Accurate modelling of the phenomena observed in this work was found to be possible using the simple empirical models. The use of the Adsorbed Solution theory is complicated by the nature of the theory and the complexity of the studied system. In addition to the sorption models, a dynamic column model that takes into account the volume changes of the gel type resins as changing resin bed porosity was also derived. Using the chromatography, all the main components of the hydrolysates can be recovered selectively, and the sulfuric acid consumption of the hydrolysis process can be lowered considerably. Investigation of the performance of the chromatographic fractionation showed that the highest separation efficiency in this separation task is obtained with a gel type resin with a high crosslinking degree (8 wt. %); especially when the hydrolysates contain high amounts of acetic acid. In addition, the concentrated acid hydrolysis should be done with as low sulfuric acid concentration as possible to obtain good separation performance. The column loading and flow rate also have large effects on the performance. In this work, it was demonstrated that when recycling of the fractions obtained in the chromatographic fractionation are recycled to preceding unit operations these unit operations should included in the performance evaluation of the fractionation. When this was done, the separation performance and the feasibility of the concentrated acid hydrolysis process were found to improve considerably. Use of multi-column chromatographic fractionation processes, the Japan Organo process and the Multi-Column Recycling Chromatography process, was also investigated. In the studied case, neither of these processes could compete with the single-column batch process in the productivity. However, due to internal recycling steps, the Multi-Column Recycling Chromatography was found to be superior to the batch process when the product yield and the eluent consumption were taken into account.

Tämä diplomityö on läpileikkaus kasvihuonekaasupäästöistä sekä niitä koskevista vähennystoimenpiteistä Suomessa Kioton pöytäkirjan ensimmäisen sopimuskauden lopussa. Työ on toteutettu kirjallisuustutkimuksena ja siihen on käytetty painettuja sekä sähköisiä lähteitä. Huoli ilmastonmuutoksesta on saanut aikaan sen, että kasvihuonekaasupäästöjä rajoitetaan tänä päivänä kansainvälisillä sopimuksilla. Vaikka kaikki suuretkaan päästäjämaat eivät ole sopimuksia ratifioineet, ovat EU-maat Suomi mukaan lukien sitoutuneet YK:n ilmastonmuutosta koskevaan puitesopimukseen ja sen noudattamiseen. Puitesopimusta tarkentavassa Kioton pöytäkirjassa EU sitoutui vähentämään kuuden eri kasvihuonekaasun kokonaispäästöjä yhteensä 8 prosenttia ajanjaksolla 2008–2012 vuoteen 1990 verrattuna. Kasvihuonekaasut, joita rajoitukset koskivat, olivat hiilidioksidi, metaani, dityppioksidi, fluorihiilivedyt, perfluorihiilivedyt ja rikkiheksafluoridi. EU:n sisäisessä taakanjaossa Suomen tavoite oli pitää päästöt vertailuvuoden 1990 tasossa ja Suomi alitti tämän noin viidellä prosentilla. Vuoden 2012 jälkeen Suomen kasvihuonekaasupäästöjen vähennystavoite on kiristynyt. Vuosille 2013–2020 Suomen tavoite on vähentää kasvihuonekaasupäästöjä 20 prosenttia alle perusvuoden 1990 tason. Työssä tutustutaan myös keinoihin, joilla aiempien ja tulevien päästöjenvähennystavoitteiden saavuttaminen on mahdollista. Näitä keinoja on mm. erilaisten biopolttoaineiden sekoittaminen fossiilisten polttoaineiden sekaan, energiatehokkuuden parantaminen ja biokaasun käytön lisääminen. Lisäksi työssä käsitellään eräitä merkityksellisiä käsitteitä, kuten EU:n päästökauppajärjestelmä ja hiilidioksidin talteenotto ja varastointi.

The aim of this thesis is to study whether the use of biomethane as a transportation fuel is reasonable from climate change perspective. In order to identify potentials and challenges for the reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, this dissertation focuses on GHG emission comparisons, on feasibility studies and on the effects of various calculation methodologies. The GHG emissions calculations are carried out by using life cycle assessment (LCA) methodologies. The aim of these LCA studies is to figure out the key parameters affecting the GHG emission saving potential of biomethane production and use and to give recommendations related to methodological choices. The feasibility studies are also carried out from the life cycle perspective by dividing the biomethane production chain for various operators along the life cycle of biomethane in order to recognize economic bottlenecks. Biomethane use in the transportation sector leads to GHG emission reductions compared to fossil transportation fuels in most cases. In addition, electricity and heat production from landfill gas, biogas or biomethane leads to GHG reductions as well. Electricity production for electric vehicles is also a potential route to direct biogas or biomethane energy to transportation sector. However, various factors along the life cycle of biomethane affect the GHG reduction potentials. Furthermore, the methodological selections have significant effects on the results. From economic perspective, there are factors related to different operators along the life cycle of biomethane, which are not encouraging biomethane use in the transportation sector. To minimize the greenhouse gas emissions from the life cycle of biomethane, waste feedstock should be preferred. In addition, energy consumption, methane leakages, digestate utilization and the current use of feedstock or biogas are also key factors. To increase the use of biomethane in the transportation sector, political steering is needed to improve the feasibility for the operators. From methodological perspective, it is important to recognize the aim of the life cycle assessment study. The life cycle assessment studies can be divided into two categories: 1.) To produce average GHG information of biomethane to evaluate the acceptability of biomethane use compared to fossil transportation fuels. 2.) To produce GHG information of biomethane related to actual decision-making situations. This helps to figure out the actual GHG emission changes in cases when feedstock, biogas or biomethane are already in other use. For example directing biogas from electricity production to transportation use does not necessarily lead to additional GHG emission reductions. The use of biomethane seems to have a lot of potential for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions as a transportation fuel. Repowering existing power plants by replacing coal with biomass might offer an interesting option to ease the transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources and promote a fur-ther expansion of bioenergy in Europe, on account of the potential to decrease greenhouse gas emissions, as well as other pollutants (SOx, NOx, etcetera). In addition, a great part of the appeal of repowering projects comes from the opportunity to reuse the vast existing invest-ment and infrastructure associated with coal-based power generation. Even so, only a limited number of experiences with repowering are found. Therefore, efforts are required to produce technical and scientific evidence to determine whether said technology might be considered feasible for its adoption within European conditions. A detailed evaluation of the technical and economic aspects of this technology constitutes a powerful tool for decision makers to define the energy future for Europe. To better illustrate this concept, a case study is analyzed. A Slovakian pulverized coal plant was used as the basis for determining the effects on perfor-mance, operation, maintenance and cost when fuel is shifted to biomass. It was found that biomass fuel properties play a crucial role in plant repowering. Furthermore, results demon-strate that this technology offers renewable energy with low pollutant emissions at the cost of reduced capacity, relatively high levelized cost of electricity and sometimes, a maintenance-intensive operation. Lastly, regardless of the fact that existing equipment can be reutilized for the most part, extensive additions/modifications may be required to ensure a safe operation and an acceptable performance.
