Työn teoriaosassa esitetään kirjallisuudessa esiintyviä teoreettisia ja kokeellisia yhtälöitä nesteen nopeuden, kaasun tilavuusosuuden, painehäviön ja lämmönsiirron laskemiseksi. Lisäksi käsitellään airlift-reaktoreiden toimintaa, rakennetta ja teollisia sovelluksia, sekä sekoitusta ja geometrian vaikutusta airlift-reaktoreiden hydrodynaamisiin ominaisuuksiin. Kokeellisessa osassa kuvataan käytetty koelaitteisto ja mittausmenetelmät sekä esitetään saadut koetulokset. Koelaitteisto on viidellä nousuputkella varustettu ulkoisen kierron airlift-reaktori. Kokeellisessa osassa pyritään ratkaisemaan tällaisessa reaktorissa mahdollisesti esiintyviä ongelmia, kuten "slug flown" muodostuminen nousuputkissa sekä fluidien epätasainen jakautuminen nousuputkiin. Lisäksi tutkitaan erilaisten muuttujien, kuten kaasun tilavuusvirran, nesteen viskositeetin, suutinkoon ja nesteen jakoputken rakenteen, vaikutusta kaasun tilavuusosuuteen ja nesteen nopeuteen nousuputkissa. Nesteen nopeudet mitataan merkkiainemenetelmällä ja kaasun tilavuusosuudet manometrimenetelmällä. Lämmönsiirtoa tutkitaan mittaamalla lämpötilaeroja nousuputkissa NiCr-Ni –termoelementeillä. Mittaustulosten perusteella muokataan korrelaatiot kaasun tilavuusosuudelle ja nesteen tyhjäputkinopeudelle. Korrelaatioista lasketut tulokset sopivat kohtuullisen hyvin yhteen mitattujen tulosten kanssa. "Slug flown" ei todettu muodostuvan ongelmaksi 2.5 mPa s pienemmillä viskositeetin arvoilla 2 metriä pitkissä ja 19 mm halkaisijaltaan olevissa putkissa. Lisäksi todettiin, että kaasu- ja nestefaasien jakautumisongelmat voidaan ratkaista rakenteellisesti.

Several possible methods of increasing the efficiency and power of hydro power plants by improving the flow passages are investigated in this stydy. The theoretical background of diffuser design and its application to the optimisation of hydraulic turbine draft tubes is presented in the first part of this study. Several draft tube modernisation projects that have been carried out recently are discussed. Also, a method of increasing the efficiency of the draft tube by injecting a high velocity jet into the boundary layer is presented. Methods of increasing the head of a hydro power plant by using an ejector or a jet pump are discussed in the second part of this work. The theoretical principles of various ejector and jet pump types are presented and four different methods of calculating them are examined in more detail. A self-made computer code is used to calculate the gain in the head for two example power plants. Suitable ejector installations for the example plants are also discussed. The efficiency of the ejector power was found to be in the range 6 - 15 % for conventional head increasers, and 30 % for the jet pump at its optimum operating point. In practice, it is impossible to install an optimised jet pump with a 30 % efficiency into the draft tube as this would considerabely reduce the efficiency of the draft tube at normal operating conditions. This demonstrates, however, the potential for improvement which lies in conventional head increaser technology. This study is based on previous publications and on published test results. No actual laboratory measurements were made for this study. Certain aspects of modelling the flow in the draft tube using computational fluid dynamics are discussed in the final part of this work. The draft tube inlet velocity field is a vital boundary condition for such a calculation. Several previously measured velocity fields that have successfully been utilised in such flow calculations are presented herein.

The aim of this study is to gain a better understanding of the structure and the deformation history of a NW-SE trending regional, crustal-scale shear structure in the Åland archipelago, SW Finland, called the Sottunga-Jurmo shear zone (SJSZ). Approaches involving e.g. structural geology, geochronology, geochemistry and metamorphic petrology were utilised in order to reconstruct the overall deformation history of the study area. The study therefore describes several features of the shear zone including structures, kinematics and lithologies within the study area, the ages of the different deformation phases (ductile to brittle) within the shear zone, as well as some geothermobarometric results. The results indicate that the SJSZ outlines a major crustal discontinuity between the extensively migmatized rocks NE of the shear zone and the unmigmatised, amphibolite facies rocks SW of the zone. The main SJSZ shows overall dextral lateral kinematics with a SW-side up vertical component and deformation partitioning into pure shear and simple shear dominated deformation styles that was intensified toward later stages of the deformation history. The deformation partitioning resulted in complex folding and refolding against the SW margin of the SJSZ, including conical and sheath folds, and in a formation of several minor strike-slip shear zones both parallel and conjugate to the main SJSZ in order to accommodate the regional transpressive stresses. Different deformation phases within the study area were dated by SIMS (zircon U-Pb), ID-TIMS (titanite U-Pb) and 40Ar/39Ar (pseudotachylyte wholerock) methods. The first deformation phase within the ca. 1.88 Ga rocks of the study area is dated at ca. 1.85 Ga, and the shear zone was reactivated twice within the ductile regime (at ca. 1.83 Ga and 1.79 Ga), during which the strain was successively increasingly partitioned into the main SJSZ and the minor shear zones. The age determinations suggest that the orogenic processes within the study area did not occur in a temporal continuum; instead, the metamorphic zircon rims and titanites show distinct, 10-20 Ma long breaks in deformation between phases of active deformation. The results of this study further imply slow cooling of the rocks through 600-700ºC so that at 1.79 Ga, 2 the temperature was still at least 600ºC. The highest recorded metamorphic pressures are 6.4-7.1 kbar. At the late stages or soon after the last ductile phase (ca. 1.79 Ga), relatively high-T mylonites and ultramylonites were formed, witnessing extreme deformation partitioning and high strain rates. After the rocks reached lower amphibolite facies to amphibolite-greenschist facies transitional conditions (ca. 500-550ºC), they cooled rapidly, probably due to crustal uplift and exhumation. The shear zone was reactivated at least once within the semi-brittle to brittle regime between ca. 1.79 Ga and 1.58 Ga, as evidenced by cataclasites and pseudotachylytes. In summary, the results of this study suggest that the Sottunga-Jurmo shear zone (and the South Finland shear zone) defines a major crustal discontinuity, and played a central role in accommodating the regional stresses during and after the Svecofennian orogeny.

The literature part of the work reviews overall Fischer-Tropsch process, Fischer-Tropsch reactors and catalysts. Fundamentals of Fischer-Tropsch modeling are also presented. The emphasis is on the reactor unit. Comparison of the reactors and the catalysts is carried out to choose the suitable reactor setup for the modeling work. The effects of the operation conditions are also investigated. Slurry bubble column reactor model operating with cobalt catalyst is developed by taking into account the mass transfer of the reacting components (CO and H2) and the consumption of the reactants in the liquid phase. The effect of hydrostatic pressure and the change in total mole flow rate in gas phase are taken into account in calculation of the solubilities. The hydrodynamics, reaction kinetics and product composition are determined according to literature. The cooling system and furthermore the required heat transfer area and number of cooling tubes are also determined. The model is implemented in Matlab software. Commercial scale reactor setup is modeled and the behavior of the model is investigated. The possible inaccuraries are evaluated and the suggestions for the future work are presented. The model is also integrated to Aspen Plus process simulation software, which enables the usage of the model in more extensive Fischer-Tropsch process simulations. Commercial scale reactor of diameter of 7 m and height of 30 m was modeled. The capacity of the reactor was calculated to be about 9 800 barrels/day with CO conversion of 75 %. The behavior of the model was realistic and results were in the right range. The highest uncertainty to model was estimated to be caused by the determination of the kinetic rate.

Engineering and pricing of large recovery boiler were studied in this work. Engineering was carried out with Anita 4.2 which is an engineering program of Andritz. Key initial values were chosen with previous studies. Primary target of this work was to find out the consequences that furnace dimensions and furnace screen vertical part has to boiler pricing. Boilers that were engineered had different rate of furnace width and depth and different heat transfer plate count. Boiler balances were invariable. Boilers with different vertical screen construction were also calculated. First variation was boiler with vertical screen up to furnace roof. Other variation was to connect vertical screen to Pre-boiler generating bank inlet tubes. Total prices were calculated to engineered boilers. Pricing was sort out to heat transfers, high pressure pipes, steel structures, auxiliary equipments and civil/structural costs. This study did not notice parts of the boiler which costs do not vary with the construction of the boiler. Heat transfers had the largest share of costs. Boiler building had the most significant differences between the boilers. Furnace screen had also significant role especially to costs of the boiler building.

In steam boilers with natural circulation the circulation rate is usually between 10 and 30. Thus, consumption of water in the circulation circuit “circulation rate times” more than steam output of the boiler. There are two aspects of the design of natural water circulation loops. One is to ensure a sufficient mass flux of circulating water to avoid burnout of evaporator tubes. The other is to avoid tube wall temperature fluctuation and tube vibration due to oscillation of circulation velocity. The design criteria are therefore reduced, in principle, to those of critical heat flux, critical flow rate for burnout, and flow instability. In practical design, however, the circulation velocity and the void fraction at the evaporator tube outlet are used as the design criteria (Seikan I., et. al., 1999). This study has been made with assumption that the heat flux in the furnace of the boiler even all the time. The target of the study was to define the circulation rate of the boiler, thus average heat flux do not change it. Since the introduction of automatic orbital welding in pipeline application in 1961, significant improvements have been obtained in orbital pipe welding systems. Requirement of more productive welding systems for pipeline application forces manufacturers to innovate new advanced systems and welding processes for orbital welding method. Various methods have been used to make welding process adaptive, such as visual sensing, passive visual sensing, real-time intelligent control, scan welding technique, multi laser vision sensor, thermal scanning, adaptive image processing, neural network model, machine vision, and optical sensing. Numerous studies are reviewed and discussed in this Master’s thesis and based on a wide range of experiments which already have been accomplished by different researches the vision sensor are reported to be the best choice for adaptive orbital pipe welding system. Also, in this study the most welding processes as well as the most pipe variations welded by orbital welding systems mainly for oil and gas pipeline applications are explained. The welding results show that Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) and its variants like Surface Tension Transfer (STT) and modified short circuit are the most preferred processes in the welding of root pass and can be replaced to the Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW) in many applications. Furthermore, dual-tandem gas metal arc welding technique is currently considered the most efficient method in the welding of fill pass. Orbital GTAW process mostly is applied for applications ranging from single run welding of thin walled stainless tubes to multi run welding of thick walled pipes. Flux cored arc welding process is faster process with higher deposition rate and recently this process is getting more popular in pipe welding applications. Also, combination of gas metal arc welding and Nd:YAG laser has shown acceptable results in girth welding of land pipelines for oil and gas industry. This Master’s thesis can be implemented as a guideline in welding of pipes and tubes to achieve higher quality and efficiency. Also, this research can be used as a base material for future investigations to supplement present finding.

Our understanding of the pathogenesis of organ‐specific autoinflammation has been restricted by limited access to the target organs. Peripheral blood, however, as a preferred transportation route for immune cells, provides a window to assess the entire immune system throughout the body. Transcriptional profiling with RNA stabilizing blood collection tubes reflects in vivo expression profiles at the time the blood is drawn, allowing detection of the disease activity in different samples or within the same sample over time. The main objective of this Ph.D. study was to apply gene‐expression microarrays in the characterization of peripheral blood transcriptional profiles in patients with autoimmune diseases. To achieve this goal a custom cDNA microarray targeted for gene‐expression profiling of human immune system was designed and produced. Sample collection and preparation was then optimized to allow gene‐expression profiling from whole‐blood samples. To overcome challenges resulting from minute amounts of sample material, RNA amplification was successfully applied to study pregnancy related immunosuppression in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS). Furthermore, similar sample preparation was applied to characterize longitudinal genome‐wide expression profiles in children with type 1 diabetes (T1D) associated autoantibodies and eventually clinical T1D. Blood transcriptome analyses, using both the ImmunoChip cDNA microarray with targeted probe selection and genome‐wide Affymetrix U133 Plus 2.0 oligonucleotide array, enabled monitoring of autoimmune activity. Novel disease related genes and general autoimmune signatures were identified. Notably, down‐regulation of the HLA class Ib molecules in peripheral blood was associated with disease activity in both MS and T1D. Taken together, these studies demonstrate the potential of peripheral blood transcriptional profiling in biomedical research and diagnostics. Imbalances in peripheral blood transcriptional activity may reveal dynamic changes that are relevant for the disease but might be completely missed in conventional cross‐sectional studies.

Taloudellisesti tärkeiden metallien varannot ja tuotanto eivät ole jakautuneet tasaisesti. Maantieteelliset alueet, joilla ei ole omia varantoja ovat riippuvaisia muualta tuoduista raaka-aineista. Euroopan komissio ja USA:n energiaministeriö ovat luokitelleet tietyt metallit kriittisiksi niiden taloudellisen merkittävyyden ja saatavuuteen liittyvien epävarmuustekijöiden johdosta. Tällaisten metallien saatavuutta voitaisiin mahdollisesti parantaa lisäämällä niiden talteenottoa jätteistä. Tutkimuksessa kartoitettiin Euroopan komission kriittiseksi luokittelemien metallien pitoisuuksia eräissä jätevirroissa. Kartoitetut jätteet olivat teollisissa poltto-prosesseissa syntyneitä polttojätteitä, prosessiteollisuuden jätesakkoja ja sähkö- ja elektroniikkajätteitä. Kartoituksen perusteella valittiin lupaavimmat jätteet ja suoritettiin niille talteenottokokeita. Talteenottokokeita suoritettiin kolmelle jätteelle. Yhdestä jätesakasta liuotettiin indiumia rikki- ja suolahapoilla. Kahden eri polttojätteen seoksesta liuotettiin galliumia rikkihapolla. Käytettyjen loisteputkien käsittelyprosessista peräisin olleesta sakasta liuotettiin maametalleja rikki- ja suolahapoilla sekä rikki- ja typpihapon seoksella. Indium liukeni heikosti (korkeintaan 25 %) huoneenlämmössä rikkihapolla. Suolahapolla se liukeni paremmin (68 %). Polttojätteen liuotuskokeissa galliumin talteenottoasteen todettiin riippuvan käytetyn liuottimen määrästä. Loisteputkijätesakasta liukeni yttriumia ja europiumia kaikilla käytetyillä happoliuoksilla noin 70–100 %. Käytetyillä happokonsentraatioilla ei havaittu suuria eroja yttriumin ja europiumin liukoisuuksissa. Näitä metalleja voitaisiin mahdollisesti ottaa talteen tämän tyyppisestä sakasta liuottamalla ne happoliuoksella ja saostamalla oksalaattina. Tarvittaessa liuokset voitaisiin puhdistaa tai metallit erottaa toisistaan neste–nesteuutolla, joka on tärkein maametallien tuotantoon käytetty hydrometallurginen menetelmä.

Tässä työssä tutkittiin lämpöpumppujärjestelmiä, joilla tuotetaan samaan aikaan kylmä- ja lämpötehoa. Höyryn puristus lämpöpumppu on yleisimmin käytetty lämpöpumpputyyppi ja sen pääkomponentit ovat kompressori, lauhdutin, paisuntaventtiili ja höyrystin. Lämpöpumppu tuottaa samaan aikaan kylmätehoa höyrystimellä ja lämpötehoa lauhduttimella. Lämpöpumpun toiminta-arvoihin vaikuttaa valittujen lämpötilatasojen lisäksi voimakkaasti valitun kiertoaineen termodynaamiset ominaisuudet sekä kompressorin painesuhteeseen verrannollinen isentrooppihyötysuhde. Uusissa lämpöpumpuissa käytetään HFC yhdisteitä sekä sekoituksia kiertoaineina, mutta myös luonnolliset aineet, kuten ammoniakki, ovat lupaavia korvikkeita CFC yhdisteille. Sopivia sovelluskohteita kylmä- ja lämpötehon yhteistuotannolle ovat kauppa- ja asuinrakennukset, hotellit, toimistot, elintarviketeollisuus ja -myymälät sekä vierekkäiset jää- ja uimahallit ja hiihtoputket. Kylmä- ja lämpötehon yhteistuotannolla voitaisiin saavuttaa merkittäviä säästöjä ja päästövähennyksiä. Esimerkiksi jäähallien kylmäkoneiden lauhdelämmön hyödyntämisessä olisi Suomessa potentiaalia 6-10 miljoonan euron vuotuisiin säästöihin. Kylmä- ja lämpötehon yhteistuotanto voidaan toteuttaa hyödyntämällä kylmäkoneen lauhdelämpöä toisella lämpöpumpulla. Toinen vaihtoehto on käyttää eri tilojen samanaikaiseen lämmittämiseen ja jäähdyttämiseen HPS lämpöpumppua tai moniyksikköistä lämpöpumppua.

Laserpinnoitus on additiivinen prosessi, jossa lasertehon avulla sulatetaan pinnoitusainetta pinnoitettavan kappaleen pintaan. Laserpinnoituksella on mahdollista aikaansaada tiivis sekä kova, kulutusta ja korroosiota kestävä pinnoite kappaleen pintaan. Tässä työssä kohteena oli potkurilaitteen ohjausputken laserpinnoitus. Kyseisessä kohteessa pinnoitteelta vaaditaan hyvää korroosion- ja kulumisen kestoa. Työn tavoitteena oli lisätä tietoisuutta laserpinnoitusprosessista ja siinä vaikuttavista tekijöistä. Myös materiaaliominaisuuksien vaikutuksia sekä pinnoitus- että pinnoitettavien aineiden osalta selvitettiin. Työhön sisältyi myös kokeellinen osuus, jossa tavoitteena oli löytää kustannustehokkain pinnoiteaine tutkittuun kohteeseen. Kokeissa ohjausputki- sekä levyaihioon tehtiin koepinnoituksia. Kokeiden ja edelleen materiaalitutkimuksien avulla tutkittiin neljää eri pinnoitusainetta, jotka olivat Stellitti 21, Inconel 625, AISI 316L ja AISI 431. Kovuus- ja taivutuskokeiden perusteella kyseisistä aineista vain Stelliitti 21 täytti ohjausputken pinnoitteelle asetetut vaatimukset. Näin ollen Stelliitti 21 valikoitui kustannustehokkaimmaksi pinnoitusaineeksi ohjausputkien laserpinnoitukseen.

Työssä selvitetään kiertolaskennan periaatteita kuplapetikattilassa, esitetään lyhyesti kattilan toimintaperiaate ja paneudutaan alan laskentaohjelmistoihin. Luonnonkierto kattilan vesihöyrypiirissä on seurausta hydrostaattisesta paineesta, joka aiheutuu tiheyserosta nousu- ja laskuputkien välillä. Kiertolaskennassa on huomioitava kaksifaasivirtauksen ominaispiirteet. Höyry ja neste virtaavat putkistossa eri nopeuksilla, jolloin esimerkiksi painehäviön määrityksessä käytetään erilaisia korrelaatioita ja käyrästöjä. Kaksifaasivirtauksen laskennassa tarvitaan kolmea eri taseyhtälöä: energiatasetta, massatasetta ja liikemäärätasetta. Luonnonkiertokattiloissa höyrykierron suunnittelussa on kaksi pääasiallista ehtoa. Ensimmäiseksi tulee varmistaa riittävä kiertoveden massavirta, jotta vältetään höyrystinputkien puhki palaminen. Toiseksi tulee välttää höyrystinputken pinnan lämpötilavaihteluita ja värähtelyitä. Alustavassa luonnonkierron mitoituksessa turvaudutaan kokemusperäiseen tietoon. Myöhemmässä tarkemmassa mitoituksessa käytettäviä ohjelmistoja ovat NOWA sekä kaupalliset PPSD ja Apros. Laskenta lähtee liikkeelle siitä, että lasketaan ensin vesihöyrykierron massavirrat erilaisilla lämpökuormilla ja höyryntuotanto määritellään painehäviöiden perusteella. NOWA- ja PPSD- ohjelmistoilla tehtyjen esimerkkilaskelmien perusteella voidaan sanoa, että tulokset riippuvat käytetystä laskentamallista.

Tämän diplomityön tavoitteena on ollut selvittää, kuinka robotisoitua hitsausta on mahdollista hyödyntää teollisuuskaiteiden valmistuksessa. Tutkimusmenetelminä käytettiin kirjallisuusselvitystä, hitsauskokeita ja makrohietutkimuksia. Työssä keskityttiin robottihitsauksen menetelmiin ja työstä on rajattu pois kaikki kustannuslaskelmat sekä alumiinin hitsaus. Hitsattavat materiaalit olivat rakenneteräs ja ruostumaton teräs. Rakenneteräsputken koko oli 42,4 x 2,6 mm ja ruostumattoman putken koko 42,4 x 2,0 mm. Käytetyt liitosmuodot olivat T-liitoksia, joista suorassa T-liitoksessa putkien välinen kulma oli 90 astetta ja vinossa T-liitoksessa noin 45 astetta. Tehdyn selvitystyön ja hitsauskokeiden perusteella voidaan sanoa, että kaiteissa käytettävien materiaalipaksuuksien ja liitosmuotojen hitsaaminen robotilla on mahdollista. Hitsauksen lopputulos riippuu hitsausasennosta ja paras tulos saavutetaan, kun kappaletta pyöritetään hitsauksen aikana siten, että hitsaus tapahtuu koko ajan jalkoasennossa.
