This thesis describes several different pretreatment processes for gold concentrates and ores. The thesis is divided to theoretical part and experimental part. The theoretical part presents the operating principle of the main pretreatment methods and their suitability for thiosulphate leaching. In the theoretical part also the whole recovery process for gold from ore to elemental gold is presented. In the experimental part the study is focused on pretreatment of sulphidic refractory concentrates with mechanical activation and chemical oxidation under alkaline environment; and their effect on leachability in the thiosulphate leaching. In the experimental part a combined 2-step process, where chemical oxidation under ammoniacal environment is cascaded with thiosulphate leaching in the same conditions, is also tested. The main sulphuric mineral components in the studied refractory concentrate are pyrite (49.4 %) and arsenopyrite (27.7 %). The gold content in the concentrate is 11.3 ppm and silver content is 90 ppm. Without pretreatment the gold conversion in thiosulphate leaching was 30 %, which was analyzed at the time point of 9 hours. At that time the silver conversion was 17 %. By using mechanical activation the gold conversion reached was 59 % and silver conversion 26 %. With chemical oxidation under alkaline environment, where the used chemical was sodium hydroxide, the reached conversion of gold was 72 % and 31 % for silver. In the combined oxidation and leaching experiment the conversion of gold remained at 49 % and 18 % for silver.

Understanding the trust in organisations and the business relationships have been an emerging trend in past years. Researchers and executives and subject matter experts in companies have recognised the importance of managing the trust in inter-organisational relationships. Further, the interest both in academia and in business has raised an interest to under-stand dyadic relationships. The objective of this thesis was to examine trust in inter-organisational and inter-personal dyadic relationships. Trust and the dyadic relationships were analysed in information technolo-gy services and outsourcing industry. Dyads were established between the supplier company operating in the industry and its customers. The empiric part of the study was carried out by an email survey that was sent to 331 respondents resulting with effective response rate of 48.7 per cent. Statistical analyses were applied to analyse the data sample. In general, results indicated reputation, trustworthiness, capability and collaboration in dyadic trust relationships. Experience grown in duration of the relationship affected the trust positively. No drastic differences in trust were recognised when comparing supplier and customer responses.

Näiden kehittämiseksi on tehty runsaasti tutkimuksia, joiden perusteella on voitu määritellä tietyt optimit erilaisille rikastusmenetelmille.

The birth of Internet technologies, the developments of fast fashion and multiple retailing channels have created a need for a new, more integrated way for doing retailing. Agility in fast fashion retailing could be seen as a significant way of responding to these changes and furthermore, as a way to respond to consumers’ altering demands. The purpose of this study was to explore the ways in which agile supply chains and integrated multichannel retailing influence the international fast fashion retailing. A framework for agility in retail was developed based on available theoretical considerations in distribution and communication channels. Qualitative research methods and qualitative content analysis were used. Four expert interviews were carried out to gain new perspectives to the objectives. The rest of the data was collected from an industry specific document, expert video and two expert lectures. Following the data collection, the research material was analyzed with qualitative content analysis. The empirical findings on agility in retail were presented based on a coding frame. It was found that agility in retail has multiple parts, which are overlapping and affecting one another. Furthermore, instead of viewing the agile supply chain and integrated multichannel retailing separately of each other as usual, it was found that they should be integrated, and the term “agility” was proposed to denote this approach. Also, it was found that the most common drivers and constrains of integrated multichannel retailing were the new Internet technologies and customer demand. Brick-and-mortar store, online store, mobile devices and social media were found to be the most common retailing channels. Furthermore, in-store technology, click-and-collect approach, NFC-buying, RFID-technology as well as 3D- digital simulations on fabrics and patterns will enhance agility even more in the future. In addition, environmental issues, customer experiences and communication will be important factors. This study has provided new practical insights for the future retailing. Furthermore, it has contributed to the academic research by discussing the traditional approaches of agility in fast fashion retail and bringing in new insights.

Elevator landing doors are fire tested to measure their fire resistance. The objective of this master’s thesis was to create a method to evaluate the fire tests and the organizations that provide these testing services. The main focus area was in creating accurate evaluation criteria and weighting the criteria. The thesis was formed by first presenting the reader with the literature review of the closest related theories. The theories which were chosen were systematic decision making, supplier selection, and make or buy and outsourcing theories. In the empirical section the created process of evaluating fire testing is presented, with analysis of the current situation of fire testing processes and evaluation methods. Evaluating fire testing services required two types of criteria to be formed, technical criteria to evaluate the technical requirements, and service criteria to evaluate the organization which was offering the testing service. These criteria formed the core for the evaluation process which consisted of five different phases that were developed based on the literature review. The process was tested to create best practices and to make improvement proposals accordingly. Systematical process for evaluating fire testing helps to recognize the most important technical and service related aspects. The created criteria can be also used in future to benchmark and monitor the situation of fire testing. The results of the process can be used when deciding whether to outsource the service or to keep it in-house.

Ore sorting after crushing is an effective way to enhance the feed quality of a concentrator. Sorting by hand is the oldest way of concentrating minerals but it has become outdated because of low capacities. Older methods of sorting have also been difficult to use in large scale productions due to low capacities of sorters. Data transfer and processing and the speed of rejection mechanisms have been the bottlenecks for effective use of sorters. A fictive chalcopyrite ore body was created for this thesis. The properties of the ore were typical of chalcopyrite ores and economical limit was set for design. Concentrator capacity was determined by the size of ore body and the planned mine life. Two concentrator scenarios were compared, one with the sorting facility and the other without sorting. Comparison was made for quality and amount of feed, size of equipment and economics. Concentrator with sorting had lower investment and operational cost but also lower incomes due to the ore loss in sorting. Net cash flow, net present value and internal rate of interest were calculated for comparison of the two scenarios.

Investigation of high pressure pretreatment process for gold leaching is the objective of the present master's thesis. The gold ores and concentrates which cannot be easily treated by leaching process are called "refractory". These types of ores or concentrates often have high content of sulfur and arsenic that renders the precious metal inaccessible to the leaching agents. Since the refractory ores in gold manufacturing industry take a considerable share, the pressure oxidation method (autoclave method) is considered as one of the possible ways to overcome the related problems. Mathematical modeling is the main approach in this thesis which was used for investigation of high pressure oxidation process. For this task, available information from literature concerning this phenomenon, including chemistry, mass transfer and kinetics, reaction conditions, applied apparatus and application, was collected and studied. The modeling part includes investigation of pyrite oxidation kinetics in order to create a descriptive mathematical model. The following major steps are completed: creation of process model by using the available knowledge; estimation of unknown parameters and determination of goodness of the fit; study of the reliability of the model and its parameters.

The business logic in the manufacturing industry has changed in the 21st century. In the current industrial market, manufacturers are driven to provide more comprehensive offerings that go beyond the traditional product-orientation by providing capacity and availability for their customers. From incidental merchandise, services have become the core of manufacturers’ offerings with long-lasting service agreements over the life-cycles of their products. This change is driven both by the need of providers to grow and gain competitive advantage and by increased customer demand caused by customers’ outsourcing trends. The three key drivers for manufacturers’ service strategies are outsourcing trends, saturation of the installed base, and commoditization in product markets. Thus, manufacturers focus on providing industrial solutions which are delivered through relational processes with customers by using solution-driven business models. In the management of marketing activities, this can be regarded as closer customer relationships, service-dominant business logic, and collaboration in solving customers’ problems. However, there are few studies on comprehensive conceptualizations of a solution offering that include different elements and their roles, especially in the context of capital goods industry. Also the transition process needs further studies in a real life context. This study explores the transition process of an industrial company from product to solution business and, as an aid to managing the solution business, explicates the structure and management of an industrial solution offering. There are two themes, the industrial transition process and industrial solution offering. Regarding the industrial transition process, the aim is to understand the supplier view on the process and its execution and to determine the challenges related to the transition process. The industrial solution offering is discussed by its elements and characteristics, as well as management. Furthermore, a special type of build-own-operate-transfer business model is presented and its suitability in the industrial context analyzed. The study includes findings achieved by qualitative methods and from four case companies. Based on the results, it is tentatively suggested that in the industrial solution business, the transition from product to solution business is not a linear project but an evolving process that varies according to customer needs, which suggests that companies need to possess an ability to develop new business models for different customer needs. The industrial solution offering is dynamic as it evolves in collaboration according to the prevailing and latent customer needs, which suggest restructuring of the organization from a product-centric to a customer-centric one. Furthermore, based on the findings, the concept of industrial solutions is defined as an ongoing relational process to satisfy a customer’s particular business or operational requirements, and the concept of industrial solution offering as an entity comprising the customized goods, services, collaboration, and finance needed to fulfill the industrial solution. Finally, the study offers several managerial implications for industrial managers involved in the transition and management of the solution business and its offering.

The trend of concentrating to core competencies leads to outsourcing of non-core activities. One such activity is logistics, where the responsibility is given to third-party service providers. This means the service provider acts as an intermediary between the buyer and the end customer. This thesis concentrates on depicting the operational environment of one such service provider, Swissport Finland Ltd, and the improvement of their checked baggage irregularity service. The tools used for this work were service blueprinting, an illustrative method for service mapping, and failure modes and effects analysis. The theoretical part of the thesis offers a framework for using these tools for logistics services, while the empirical part consists of a study mostly qualitative in nature. Action research method was used for the service improvement research. According to the results of this study the combination of service blueprinting and FMEA can be used successfully for irregularity service improvement. The most important result was an enhanced irregularity process that has been found to alleviate earlier problems.

Vaahdotusprosessia käytetään yleisesti erottamaan arvokkaita mineraaleja malmeista. Toimiakseen tehokkaasti prosessi tarvitsee kokoojakemikaaleja, joiden tehtävänä on sitoa halutut mineraalit ilmakupliin. Jotta näiden kemikaalien käyttäytymistä prosessissa voitaisiin ymmärtää paremmin ja prosessin ohjausta tehostaa, pitää kokoojia pystyä analysoimaan prosessivesistä. Työn kirjallisuusosassa on koottu ja vertailtu erilaisia kirjallisuudesta löytyneitä analyysimenetelmiä kokoojakemikaaleille. Kokeellisessaosassa on kehitetty kaksi kapillaarielektroforeesimenetelmää näiden kemikaalien tutkimiseen.

Tutkimuksen toisena keskeisenä tavoitteena on syventää tätä teoreettista tietoa ja analysoida taloushallinnon tehostamiseksi kehitettyjen menetelmien toimivuutta Suomessa toimivan yrityksen ostolaskuprosessin osalta. Tutkielmassa pystyttiin selkeästi tuomaan esiin taloushallinnon tehostumiseen vaikuttaneita tekijöitä ja osoittamaan näiden ostolaskuprosessia tehostava vaikutus. Analysoitaessa eri menetelmien keskinäistä tehokkuutta voidaan suomalaisen yrityksen näkökulmasta perustellusti olettaa, että rajat ylittävät ulkoistamiset ovat vain välivaihe matkalla mahdollisimman pitkälle automatisoituun prosessiin – kun laskut vastaanotetaan sähköisinä verkkolaskuina ja täsmäytetään automaattisesti sähköisiin ostotilauksiin, voidaankin kysyä mitä ostolaskuprosessista voitaisiin ylipäänsä ulkoistaa.

The iron and steelmaking industry is among the major contributors to the anthropogenic emissions of carbon dioxide in the world. The rising levels of CO2 in the atmosphere and the global concern about the greenhouse effect and climate change have brought about considerable investigations on how to reduce the energy intensity and CO2 emissions of this industrial sector. In this thesis the problem is tackled by mathematical modeling and optimization using three different approaches. The possibility to use biomass in the integrated steel plant, particularly as an auxiliary reductant in the blast furnace, is investigated. By pre-processing the biomass its heating value and carbon content can be increased at the same time as the oxygen content is decreased. As the compression strength of the preprocessed biomass is lower than that of coke, it is not suitable for replacing a major part of the coke in the blast furnace burden. Therefore the biomass is assumed to be injected at the tuyere level of the blast furnace. Carbon capture and storage is, nowadays, mostly associated with power plants but it can also be used to reduce the CO2 emissions of an integrated steel plant. In the case of a blast furnace, the effect of CCS can be further increased by recycling the carbon dioxide stripped top gas back into the process. However, this affects the economy of the integrated steel plant, as the amount of top gases available, e.g., for power and heat production is decreased. High quality raw materials are a prerequisite for smooth blast furnace operation. High quality coal is especially needed to produce coke with sufficient properties to ensure proper gas permeability and smooth burden descent. Lower quality coals as well as natural gas, which some countries have in great volumes, can be utilized with various direct and smelting reduction processes. The DRI produced with a direct reduction process can be utilized as a feed material for blast furnace, basic oxygen furnace or electric arc furnace. The liquid hot metal from a smelting reduction process can in turn be used in basic oxygen furnace or electric arc furnace. The unit sizes and investment costs of an alternative ironmaking process are also lower than those of a blast furnace. In this study, the economy of an integrated steel plant is investigated by simulation and optimization. The studied system consists of linearly described unit processes from coke plant to steel making units, with a more detailed thermodynamical model of the blast furnace. The results from the blast furnace operation with biomass injection revealed the importance of proper pre-processing of the raw biomass as the composition of the biomass as well as the heating value and the yield are all affected by the pyrolysis temperature. As for recycling of CO2 stripped blast furnace top gas, substantial reductions in the emission rates are achieved if the stripped CO2 can be stored. However, the optimal recycling degree together with other operation conditions is heavily dependent on the cost structure of CO2 emissions and stripping/storage. The economical feasibility related to the use of DRI in the blast furnace depends on the price ratio between the DRI pellets and the BF pellets. The high amount of energy needed in the rotary hearth furnace to reduce the iron ore leads to increased CO2 emissions.
