In response to an increasing need for ever-shorter personality instruments, Gosling, Rentfrow, and Swann (2003) developed the Ten-Item-Personality Inventory (TIPI), which measures the dimensions of the Five Factor Model (FFM) using 10 items (two for each dimension) and can be administered in about one minute. In two studies and using a multi-judge (self and observer) and multi-instrument design, we develop Spanish (Castilian) and Catalan versions of the TIPI and evaluate them in terms of internal consistency, test-retest reliability, convergent, discriminant, and content validity, as well as self-observer correlations. Test-retest correlations were strong, and convergence with the NEO-PI-R factors was significant. There were also strong correlations between observer ratings and the participants’ self-ratings. Despite some inconsistencies with respect to the Agreeableness scale, the Catalan translation and both translations into Spanish of the original TIPI demonstrated sufficient psychometric properties to warrant use as a Five Factor personality measure when the use of longer instruments is not convenient or possible. Furthermore, as the first translation of a brief standard Big Five Instrument into Catalan, this work should facilitate future research on personality in the Catalan-speaking population.

This paper is a study of the concept of priority and its use together with the notion of hierarchy in academic writing and theoretical models of translation. Hierarchies and priorities can be implicit or explicit, prescribed, suggested or described. The paper starts, chronologically, wtih Nida and Levý’s hierarchical accounts of translation and follows their legacy in scholars as different as Newmark and Gutt. The concept of priorities is hinted at also in didactic models (Nord) as well as in norm-theoretical and accounts of translation (Toury and Chesterman) within Descriptive Translation Studies. All of these authors are analyzed and commented. The paper calls for a more systematic and straightforward account of translational priorities, and proposes a few conceptual tools that stem from this research model, including the concepts of ambition and richness of a translation. Finally, the paper concludes with an adaptation of Lakoff and Johnson’s view of prototypicality and its potential usefulness in research into and the understanding of translation.

This is a case study of the Spanish dubbed version of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (George Roy Hill 1969) to illustrate and further develop the concept of L3 as a language that appears in source texts and their translations. L3 is distinguishable from the main language(s), L1 for the source text and L2 for the translation, based on a model proposed by Corrius and Zabalbeascoa 2011, and Corrius 2008. The study reveals various possible ways of rendering L3 in translation, in particular when L3 happens to coincide with L2. It also looks into the effect that certain translation solutions may have on intratextual translation and metatranslation.

This paper calls for greater attention from researchers into the nature of humor translation as an interdisciplinary area that should be of interest to translation and humor studies. It includes a brief review of the complexity of translation and the problems posed by traditional approaches. The paper introduces a number of parameters that may be of assistance in developing joke typologies for translators or translation scholars. A model is presented for structuring joke-types according to binary branching. An attempt is then made to combine the model with ideas and concepts put forward in Attardo (2002). The result is a binary branch tree for the 6 Knowledge Resources and the hierarchical structure that Attardo claims they have. One important conclusion is that sameness, or similarity, may have little to do with funniness, and, if this is so, it is going to create a dilemma for translators wishing to achieve equivalent effect.

We propose to analyze shapes as “compositions” of distances in Aitchison geometry asan alternate and complementary tool to classical shape analysis, especially when sizeis non-informative.Shapes are typically described by the location of user-chosen landmarks. Howeverthe shape – considered as invariant under scaling, translation, mirroring and rotation– does not uniquely define the location of landmarks. A simple approach is to usedistances of landmarks instead of the locations of landmarks them self. Distances arepositive numbers defined up to joint scaling, a mathematical structure quite similar tocompositions. The shape fixes only ratios of distances. Perturbations correspond torelative changes of the size of subshapes and of aspect ratios. The power transformincreases the expression of the shape by increasing distance ratios. In analogy to thesubcompositional consistency, results should not depend too much on the choice ofdistances, because different subsets of the pairwise distances of landmarks uniquelydefine the shape.Various compositional analysis tools can be applied to sets of distances directly or afterminor modifications concerning the singularity of the covariance matrix and yield resultswith direct interpretations in terms of shape changes. The remaining problem isthat not all sets of distances correspond to a valid shape. Nevertheless interpolated orpredicted shapes can be backtransformated by multidimensional scaling (when all pairwisedistances are used) or free geodetic adjustment (when sufficiently many distancesare used)

A class of exact solutions of Hele-Shaw flows without surface tension in a rotating cell is reported. We show that the interplay between injection and rotation modifies the scenario of formation of finite-time cusp singularities. For a subclass of solutions, we show that, for any given initial condition, there exists a critical rotation rate above which cusp formation is suppressed. We also find an exact sufficient condition to avoid cusps simultaneously for all initial conditions within the above subclass.

Spermiogenesis in the proteocephalidean cestode Barsonella lafoni de Chambrier et al., 2009 shows typical characteristics of the type I spermiogenesis. These include the formation of distal cytoplasmic protrusions forming the differentiation zones, lined by cortical microtubules and containing two centrioles. An electron-dense material is present in the apical region of the differentiation zone during the early stages of spermiogenesis. Each centriole is associated to a striated rootlet, being separated by an intercentriolar body. Two free and unequal flagella originate from the centrioles and develop on the lateral sides of the differentiation zone. A median cytoplasmic process is formed between the flagella. Later these flagella rotate, become parallel to the median cytoplasmic process and finally fuse proximodistally with the latter. It is interesting to note that both flagellar growth and rotation are asynchronous. Later, the nucleus enlarges and penetrates into the spermatid body. Finally, the ring of arching membranes is strangled and the young spermatozoon is detached from the residual cytoplasm. The mature spermatozoon presents two axonemes of the 9 +"1" trepaxonematan pattern, crested body, parallel nucleus and cortical microtubules, and glycogen granules. Thus, it corresponds to the type II spermatozoon, described in almost all Proteocephalidea. The anterior extremity of the gamete is characterized by the presence of an apical cone surrounded by the lateral projections of the crested body. An arc formed by some thick and parallel cortical microtubules appears at the level of the centriole. They surround the centriole and later the first axoneme. This arc of electron-dense microtubules disorganizes when the second axoneme appears, and then two parallel rows of thin cortical microtubules are observed. The posterior extremity of the male gamete exhibits some cortical microtubules. This type of posterior extremity has never been described in proteocephalidean cestodes. The ultrastructural features of the spermatozoon/spermiogenesis of the Proteocephalidea species are analyzed and compared.

This paper addresses some of the challenges inherent in finding and showing a gendered voice in translation. The starting point is my own experience as a feminist translator of both feminist and non-feminist texts. Textual practices like translating necessarily interact with current theoretical debates. In turn, theoretical writing on feminism enriches and informs one’s translating activity. This interplay between theoretical models and textual practices was particularly made evident to me as I rendered Essentially speaking, by Diana Fuss, into Catalan. In this article I intend to transcend anecdotes of translating individual texts and consider how translating equals rewriting oneself; it involves rethinking writing practices. I will specifically address the rethinking of (1) one’s identity when translating ‘like’ a feminist, (2) performativity in gender and in translation, and (3) agency and (In)visibility.

In this work we present a proposal for a course in translation from German into Spanish following the task based approach as known in second language acquisition. The aim is to improve the translation competence of translation students. We depart from the hypothesis that some students select inapropiate translation strategies when faced with certain translation problems leading them to translation errors. In order to avoid these translation errors originated by wrong application of such strategies we propose a didactic method which helps to prevent them by a) raising awareness of the different subcompetences required while translating, b) improving the ability to identify translation problems and relate them to the different subcompetences and c) enhancing the use of the most adequate strategy according to the characteristics of each problem. With regard to translation and how translation competence is acquired our work follows the communicative approach to translation theory as defended among others by Hatim & Mason (1990), Lörscher (1992) and Kiraly (1995), where translation is seen as a communicative activity which can be analized from a psycholinguistic perspective. In this sense we give operative definitions for what we understand by “translation problem”, “translation strategy”, “translation error”, “translation competence” andtranslation”. Our approach to didactics adapts recent developments in Second Language Teaching within the communicative paradigm as is the task based approach by Nunan (1989) acquisition to translation. Fitting the recquirements of this pedagogic approach we present a planning for a translation course which is compatible with present translation studies.

Investigación elaborada a partir de una estancia en el Centre de Formation de Traducteurs-Localiseurs, Terminologue et Rédacteurs (CFTTR) de la Université Rennes 2 Haute Bretagne, Francia, entre los meses de abril y julio del 2006. El proyecto constituye la fase exploratoria de la tesis doctoral desarrollada en el Departament de Traducció i d’Interpretació de la Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona en torno a la organización del trabajo en las empresas proveedoras de servicios de traducción e interpretación. Se ha recabado información y opiniones sobre la identificación de tareas desempeñadas en el ámbito laboral de quatro empresas sobre la traducción e interpretación y las tareas ajenas a la actividad traductora. Los resultados obtenidos permiten identificar una gran variedad de tareas próximas a la actividad traductora pero distintas de ella. El estudio exploratorio efectuado ha contribuido a mejorar el diseño de la investigación empírica prevista para la tesis doctoral: aportó información sobre la importancia del enfoque cualitativo, las hipótesis por contrastar, la definición del colectivo, la delimitación formal de las unidades de análisis, y sobre las principales variables de estudio y su medición.

El desenvolupament del projecte ens ha permès de crear materials per a l´aprenentatge autònom de la interpretació de conferències així com d´un material d´acompanyament i suport del procés d´aprenentatge no presencial. Aquests materials s´integren en les assignatures d´interpretació del Grau en Traducció i Interpretació i serveixen perquè els estudiants continuïn fent un treball guiat fora de l´aula. Es pot considerar també un material de suport a les classes presencials. Els materials desenvolupats cobreixen les cinc llengües dels nostres estudis (català, castellà, anglès, alemany i francès) i estan organitzats en dos blocs diferenciats: itineraris d´aprenentatge i banc de discursos. Aquesta divisió permet a l´estudiant treballar seguint dues opcions diferenciades: a) a partir d´una seqüenciació guiada de tasques; b) abordant directament la interpretació d´un discurs oral. El projecte s'ha dut a terme entre les universitats Pompeu Fabra i Autònoma de Barcelona, durant el període 2007- 2009.

Maria-Antònia Oliver i Cabrer (Manacor, 1946) és una de les poques traductores al català que han aprofundit en la teoria de la traducció i que han plasmat els seus pensaments sobre paper. Coneixem a bastament el seu vessant literari gràcies a un bon grapat d’estudis que s’han dut a terme des de diverses universitats dels Països Catalans i també des d’algunes de fora de les nostres fronteres. Amb tot, la faceta de torsimany sovint ha estat esmentada de passada, malgrat hagi portat al català autors i autores de renom com ara Virginia Woolf, Herman Melville, Italo Calvino o Mark Twain. Maria-Antònia Oliver, traductora situa l’autora en el moment en què ha traduït, se centra en la seva idea sobre la traducció, cataloga les seves traduccions i visibilitza la figura d’una traductora prolífica.

Aquest treball de recerca aborda l’Acceptabilitat (qualitat) de les traduccions des de diversos àmbits de la traducció: teoria de la traducció, àmbit professional, didàctica de la traducció i estudis empírics. Per allò, a partir de les publicacions fetes en aquest distints àmbits per diversos autors, grups de recerca i organismes oficials, es dedueix el que entén per una traducció de qualitat i es sintetitza fins a obtenir aquells criteris essencials d’Acceptabilitat que es desprenen de les seves publicacions, de manera que ens permeti contrastar-los entre si. Així mateix, insereix dins de la primera fase del projecte de recerca del grup PACTE (Adquisició de la Competència Traductora i Avaluació) es realitza un estudi exploratori sobre la idoneïtat dels Punts Rics com a mètode d’avaluació de la Acceptabilitat

Des de l'origen de les llengües, els pobles han tingut la necessitat de fer-se entendre. La traducció és una eina fonamental en la difusió i el coneixement de la diversitat, i el traductor, la peça que facilita l'apropament de les cultures. Però a l'hora de portar a terme el seu objectiu, no tots els traductors ho fan de la mateixa manera. Cal tenir en compte factors temporals, culturals, històrics, referencials, lingüístics, socials... elements que determinen el resultat final d'una traducció i les diferències entre les traduccions d'un mateix text. En aquest treball em proposo determinar les diferents estratègies que els traductors han seguit a l'hora de traduir al català el conte novè de la quarta jornada del Decameró de Giovanni Boccaccio.
