Els anuncis televisius –i els mitjans publicitaris en general– tenen entre els seus propòsits els de captar l’atenció dels espectadors i arribar a una audiència de consumidors potencials. Aquestes dues finalitats no acostumen a representar processos separats o nivells de percepció diferents per part de l’espectador: si l’anunci assoleix la seva meta, despertarà un interès que serà l’interès d’aquells que es considera que tenen més probabilitats de comprar el producte o de realitzar l’acció que l’anunci vol promoure. Com més gran sigui la precisió a l’hora d’establir contacte amb aquestes persones, més específic, directe i, en conseqüència, reeixit, serà l’efecte del missatge. Pot semblar una paradoxa el fet que un dels procediments utilitzats per a atraure l’atenció de l’audiència sigui presentar un anunci el significat del qual no s’entén a primera vista. Però es tracta d’un recurs útil. La percepció d’alguns anuncis és semblant a la que es produeix al llegir poemes o certs relats curts, tenim la tendència a rellegir-los. Potser en una primera lectura no acabem de copsar-ne el significat, però això mateix es converteix en un repte que ens porta a llegir-lo una i altra vegada fins que descobrim el missatge del text. Quan arribem a aquest punt, l’esforç esdevé plaer estètic i el filtre que selecciona l’audiència també serveix per a seleccionar el client potencial.

En este proyecto se presenta una aplicación capaz de recibir la televisión digital y representar la información que contiene en un entorno de producción de gráficos tridimensionales. Esto conlleva recoger y procesar el flujo de transporte para más de un servicio, procesar las diferentes tablas de información, implementar mecanismos para representar la información audiovisual en un entorno tridimensional y construir una interfaz de usuario con los datos recogidos.

The aim of this paper is to identify the factors that affect the market penetration of pay television by studying the competition that exists between three types of technology (satellite, cable and ADSL). We distinguish three groups of factors: the level of market competition, the level of competition in the industry and the quality of the product being offered. Our results seem to indicate that as market concentration increases, the television service can achieve greater penetration. This relationship is specifically captured by the level of intra- and inter-platform competition. We also examine the relationship between free television channels and pay television and find that as the amount of time dedicated to the broadcasting of advertising by the former increases, the number of subscribers to pay TV rises. Finally, we examine product quality by introducing the effect of holding the rights to broadcast Professional Football League matches and an HBO or Showtime produced series. Our results suggest that these variables are critical for the penetration of pay television.

El treball final de carrera analitza el reporterisme d'investigació en el mitjà televisiu, un dels fenòmens que actualment, en la pràctica periodística, s'està posant cada vegada més de moda. Per aquest motiu s'ha realitzat una part teòrica amb l'objectiu de sintetitzar tot el que fa referència al marc conceptual, des dels seus inicis, fins els elements que ho componen i que formen part del procés d'investigació i, posteriorment, una part pràctica on s'ha efectuat una anàlisi de diferents reportatges actuals d'investigació televisius. La conclusió del treball demostra que les noves audiències són les protagonistes que el panorama del reporterisme televisiu estigui evolucionant cap a nous formats, formats que, al mateix temps que progressen, conviuen els uns amb els altres dins la mateixa graella televisiva.

ISAFRUIT is an integrated European Union Project focussed on increasing fruit consumption as a means to improve human health, through evaluating the fruit chain and addressing bottlenecks therein.The innovations which are being developed throughout the ISAFRUIT Project have been analysed to determine both the success factors and the obstacles in reaching the commercialisation stage. Only 9.58% of the deliverables planned within the Project were focussed on developing technological innovations.There is evidence, however, of successes in the development of new innovations arising from the ISAFRUIT Project, with several other potential innovations in the pipeline. Of the technologies identified, 67% are still at the “invention stage”; that is, the stage prior to bridging the so-called “valley of death”, the stage between an invention and an innovation. Those which are considered to have moved over the “valley of death” either had industry partners included in the Project, or had consulted with industry to ensure that the technology was relevant, or met a recognised industry need. Many of the technologies which made less progress did not have the same interactions with industry. A number of other issues were identified which prevented further progress towards innovation. The need for scientists to publish scientific papers, both for their career pathways and to increase their chances of future funding, was identified as one issue, although the filing of patents is now becoming more accepted and recognised. The patenting system is considered complex by many scientists and is not well-understood. Finally, agreements between partners on the sharing of intellectual property rights can cause a delay in the innovation process.

Amb una plantilla, hem elaborat uns materials docents -l'objecte d'estudi dels quals és l’Estatut d'Autonomia de Catalunya de 2006, des d'una perspectiva jurídica -, que corresponen fonamentalment a l’assignatura “Institucions Polítiques de Catalunya” de 4rt. curs de la llicenciatura de Dret de la UAB. Els materials s’han penjat al web http://www.institucionspolitiques.com. L' objectiu de l’acció docent ha estat consolidar una eina interactiva, que fomenti la creativitat i el treball cooperatiu de l’estudiant, que permeti un rol més actiu del professorat, i finalment, es faciliti l’adaptació docent a l’espai europeu d’educació superior. L’experiència s'ha completat amb l’ús del mètode bimodal -campus virtual de la UAB -, amb visites a institucions públiques i amb l’assistència periòdica com a públic a programes de televisió de continguts relacionats amb la matèria. La plantilla per a desenvolupar els diversos temes del programa ha estat la següent: 1.- Redacció del tema; 2.- Visualització de conceptes: quadres sinòptics, esquemes, gràfics; 3.-Bibliografia bàsica. 4.-Legislació i jurisprudència. 5.-Text reproduït. 6.-Qüestions.7.-Temes per al debat. 8.-Test. 9.-Materials complementaris audiovisuals. 10.-Enllaços útils a la xarxa. L'experiència s’ha desenvolupat els dos darrers cursos acadèmics: 2006/07 i 2007/08, i ha girat entorn de l'elaboració i aplicació dels materials elaborats. Ha estat teòrica i pràctica a la vegada. S'ha prestat especial atenció a la feina de l'alumnat fora de l'aula, amb el conseqüent estudi previ i col·laboració en l’elaboració de materials. Cal destacar també que hem aconseguit augmentar la participació de l'alumnat a l’aula, i d'aquesta manera el rol del professor ha esdevingut més dinàmic. Els materials han permès un fàcil i ràpid accés dels estudiants, amb l’objectiu de gaudir d’unes sessions presencials més interactives, i s'ha connectat la Universitat amb la societat, a més de desenvolupar actituds cíviques o de consciència de país en una matèria tan sensible com és l'estudi del dret públic de Catalunya.

We use a Colombian TV game show to test gender differences in competitivebehavior where there is no opportunity for discrimination and females face no genderspecificexternal constraints. Each game started with six contestants who had toanswer general knowledge questions in private. There were five rounds of questionsand, at the end of each, one participant was eliminated. Despite equality in startingnumbers, women earn less than men and exit the game at a faster rate. In particular,there are more voluntary withdrawals by women than men. We draw an analogybetween the game and the process by which employees rise through the levels of acorporation. As such, we note that glass ceilings may result, in part, from women sown behavior and this raises the issue of how women are socialized to behave. At thesame time, our results illustrate that maintaining and promoting gender diversity at thelower/middle ranks of organizations is necessary to obtain gender diversity at the top.

We study the influence of television translation techniques on the quality of the English spoken across the EU and OCDE. We identify a large positive effect for subtitled original version as opposed to dubbed television, which loosely corresponds to between four and twenty years of compulsory English education at school. We also show that the importance of subtitled television is robust to a wide array of specifications.We then find that subtitling and better English skills have an influence on high-tech exports, international student mobility, and other economic and social outcomes.

STUDY OBJECTIVES The objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a mass vaccination programme carried out in Catalonia (Spain) in the last quarter of 1997 in response to an upsurge of serogroup C meningococcal disease (SCMD). DESIGN Vaccination coverage in the 18 month to 19 years age group was investigated by means of a specific vaccination register. Vaccination effectiveness was calculated using the prospective cohort method. Cases of SCMD were identified on the basis of compulsory reporting and microbiological notification by hospital laboratories. Vaccination histories were investigated in all cases. Unadjusted and age adjusted vaccination effectiveness referred to the time of vaccination and the corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CI) were estimated at 6, 12, 18 and 24 months of follow up. SETTING All population aged 18 months to 19 years of Catalonia. MAIN RESULTS A total of seven cases of SCMD were detected at six months of follow up (one in the vaccinated cohort), 12 cases at 12 months (one in the vaccinated cohort), 19 cases at 18 months (two in the vaccinated cohort) and 24 at 24 months (two in the vaccinated cohort). The age adjusted effectiveness was 84% (95%CI 30, 97) at six months, 92% (95%CI 63, 98) at 12 months, 92% (95% CI 71, 98) at 18 months and 94% (95%CI 78, 98) at 24 months. In the target population, cases have been reduced by more than two thirds (68%) two years after the vaccination programme. In the total population the reduction was 43%. CONCLUSION Vaccination effectiveness has been high in Catalonia, with a dramatic reduction in disease incidence in the vaccinated cohort accompanied by a relevant reduction in the overall population. Given that vaccination coverage was only 54.6%, it may be supposed that this vaccination effectiveness is attributable, in part, to the herd immunity conferred by the vaccine.

Background: Declining physical activity is associated with a rising burden of global disease. There is little evidence about effective ways to increase adherence to physical activity. Therefore, interventions are needed that produce sustained increases in adherence to physical activity and are cost-effective. The purpose is to assess the effectiveness of a primary care physical activity intervention in increasing adherence to physical activity in the general population seen in primary care. Method and design: Randomized controlled trial with systematic random sampling. A total of 424 subjects of both sexes will participate; all will be over the age of 18 with a low level of physical activity (according to the International Physical Activity Questionnaire, IPAQ), self-employed and from 9 Primary Healthcare Centres (PHC). They will volunteer to participate in a physical activity programme during 3 months (24 sessions; 2 sessions a week, 60 minutes per session). Participants from each PHC will be randomly allocated to an intervention (IG) and control group (CG). The following parameters will be assessed pre and post intervention in both groups: (1) health-related quality of life (SF-12), (2) physical activity stage of change (Prochaska's stages of change), (3) level of physical activity (IPAQ-short version), (4) change in perception of health (vignettes from the Cooperative World Organization of National Colleges, Academies, and Academic Associations of Family Physicians, COOP/WONCA), (5) level of social support for the physical activity practice (Social Support for Physical Activity Scale, SSPAS), and (6) control based on analysis (HDL, LDL and glycated haemoglobin).Participants' frequency of visits to the PHC will be registered over the six months before and after the programme. There will be a follow up in a face to face interview three, six and twelve months after the programme, with the reduced version of IPAQ, SF-12, SSPAS, and Prochaska's stages. Discussion: The pilot study showed the effectiveness of an enhanced low-cost, evidence-based intervention in increased physical activity and improved social support. If successful in demonstrating long-term improvements, this randomised controlled trial will be the first sustainable physical activity intervention based in primary care in our country to demonstrate longterm adherence to physical activity. Introduction. The current study describes the planning process and aims of the university reforms in Spain and suggests an innovative proposal, namely the design and evaluation of a week-long induction programme for first-year bachelor‟s degree students at the University of Lleida (Spain), organised within the European higher education framework. The purpose of this induction programme is to help new students adapt to university life. Method. A total of 102 students and ten lecturers were involved in the study. These participants responded questionnaires and interviews. We contrasted all the results in order to obtain some results that were useful to evaluate the induction programmee which the University introduced in the first four degrees. Results. Findings of the study revealed that participants gave very positive feedback regarding the programme, and the results also highlighted areas which could be improved. Conclusion. The new proposals clearly require a higher level of staff participation to make them work, highlighting the need for appropriate training of university staff and improving coordination with appropriate systems.
