Teachers' reactions on students' responses: essential for an adequate task monitoring

This research project analyzes the reactions the teacher has on students' responses. Different techniques as discourse markers, types of questions and repair sequences are taken into account, but the author puts a special emphasis on non-verbal communication. Desencuentros comunicativos dentro y fuera del aula L2 para inmigrantes adultos

In the past few years, the studies on communicative troubles emerging in intercultural communication highlight cultural differences. Some disciplines have created training guides where those differences are made explicit so that in the case of international communication misunderstandings are avoided. Examples can be found in non-verbal communication protocols for health services and in the business world. In this regard the field of second-language teaching is beginning to include the socio-pragmatic features of language in the teaching materials. For this reason, this dissertation attempts to describe the communicative conflicts that arise in conversation between immigrants and natives in the city of Barcelona. Thanks to the theoretical and methodological tools provided by Conversation Analysis and Discourse Analysis, we can ethnographically analyze the interviews held with the informants, and the interactions they had with Barcelonan people, by taking into account the linguistic and paralinguistic features which are salient in the interaction (Gumperz y Roberts, 1991; Gumperz, 1992; Hérédia, 1996 y Trognon y Saint-Dizier, 1999). For this purpose, we first examine the causes that produce the conflict as well as the consequences that derive from it. Second, we describe the strategies that the speakers use in the negotiation of the meaning that generated the misunderstanding. Although it is obvious that the nature of the conversations, the personal characteristics of the participants and the context of the conversations have a noticeable influence on the participants’ communicative attitudes (Hinnenkamp, 1987; Codó, 2003; van Dijk, 2003 y Bertrán, 2009), there are somemisunderstandings that none of the interlocutors are able to detect or solve. The results show that not all of the misunderstandings that emerge in intercultural communication have a negative effect and, therefore, its usage in the L2 teaching classroom is essential for acquiring socio-cultural and intercultural competence (Miquel, 1997; Oliveras, 2000 y Miquel y Sans 2004).

L'ús de la cançó per a potenciar el desenvolupament del llenguatge d'un nen autista

L’ús de la cançó per a potenciar el desenvolupament del llenguatge d’un nen autista és un projecte que pretén donar una visió de la música com a eina per al desenvolupament del llenguatge verbal i no verbal dels nens amb diagnòstic de TEA (Trastorn de l’Espectre Autista). Busca també fer una revisió bibliogràfica en aquest camp per conèixer i relacionar una mica més aquests móns sovint desconeguts. Finalment, presenta un programa d’intervenció adreçat específicament a quatre alumnes amb TEA, amb necessitats i objectius diferents, amb el pertinent seguiment, anàlisi de les dades recollides durant la intervenció, conclusions, i noves vies de treball que es podrien dur a terme.

Movers, testigos y acompañantes: encontrarse y empatizar en movimiento

El estudio presente explora el proceso relacional de la empatía kinestésica experimentado en el encuentro no verbal entre “Mover” y “Testigo”, como sucede en la disciplina del Movimiento Auténtico, y en la relación entre dos personas que se mueven juntas mientras una de las dos ofrece respuestas entonadas en movimiento, según las aportaciones de la pionera de DMT M. Chace. El estudio adopta una perspectiva fenomenológica/cualitativa. Se emplearon métodos cualitativos/artísticos en la colección y análisis de los datos. Ocho parejas formadas por mujeres desconocidas entre ellas,de edades entre 27 y 44 años acudieron voluntariamente a una sola sesión exploratoria diseñada para reproducir una de las dos formas de relacionarse en movimiento. En cada pareja, una de las dos, profesional en DMT, o estudiante en su último año de formación, observó o espejó a la otra moviéndose de forma improvisada. Su experiencia de encontrarse y relacionarse en los dos contextos diferentes fue explorada con el objetivo de enriquecer el conocimiento acerca de asuntos de metodología en la práctica de DMT.

This work investigates the syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic properties of nominal Split Topicalization (ST) constructions in Standard and non-Standard German. The topic phrase denotes a property, and the MF phrase either modifies this property or picks out a specific entity. Semantically, the topic phrase will be analysed as a property-denoting expression which restricts the denotation of the verbal predicate, while the MF phrase is composed either via specify or restrict (cf. Chung and Ladusaw, 2003). Syntactically, the base position of the topic phrase is the (incorporating) verb, and the MF phrase is generated independently as the complement of the verb containing an empty pronoun. Since predicates introduce abstract discourse referents, the topic phrase can be resumed via "pro" in the MF phrase.

Creating and using a non-dedicated HPC cluster with ParallelKnoppix

This note describes ParallelKnoppix, a bootable CD that allows econometricians with average knowledge of computers to create and begin using a high performance computing cluster for parallel computing in very little time. The computers used may be heterogeneous machines, and clusters of up to 200 nodes are supported. When the cluster is shut down, all machines are in their original state, so their temporary use in the cluster does not interfere with their normal uses. An example shows how a Monte Carlo study of a bootstrap test procedure may be done in parallel. Using a cluster of 20 nodes, the example runs approximately 20 times faster than it does on a single computer.

ParallelKnoppix - Rapid deployment of a linux cluster for MPI parallel processing using non-dedicated computers

This note describes ParallelKnoppix, a bootable CD that allows creation of a Linux cluster in very little time. An experienced user can create a cluster ready to execute MPI programs in less than 10 minutes. The computers used may be heterogeneous machines, of the IA-32 architecture. When the cluster is shut down, all machines except one are in their original state, and the last can be returned to its original state by deleting a directory. The system thus provides a means of using non-dedicated computers to create a cluster. An example session is documented.

Non compact euclidean cone 3-manifolds with cone angles less than 2∏

We study of noncompact Euclidean cone manifolds with cone angles less than c&2π and singular locus a submanifold. More precisely, we describe its structure outside a compact set. As a corol lary we classify those with cone angles & 2π/3 and those with cone angles = 2π/3.
