Online learning provides the opportunity to work on academic tasks at any time at the same time as doing other activities, such as using in web 2.0 tools. This study identifies factors that contribute to success in online learning from the students¿ perspective and their relationship with time patterns. A survey of learning outputs was used to find relationships between students¿ satisfaction, knowledge acquisition and knowledge transfer with time for working on academic tasks. In this study, 199 students from a university in Mexico completed the survey. Findings suggest that knowledge transfer has a significant association with the number of hours online per day, hours spent on social networks and the use made of e-learning during working hours. Learner satisfaction has a strong relationship with the time in years a learner has been using the Internet and the number of hours devoted to the course per week. The findings of this research will be helpful for faculty and instructional designers for implementing learning strategies.

The objective of this article is to identify differential traits of successful SMEs in comparison to average SME firms in the textile and clothing sector. The method used is the multiple case-study of 12 firms based on qualitative and quantitative data obtained by means of in-depth interviews. Building on recent academic literature, we use four main dimensions that may explain success: i) knowledge generation (R&D) and acquisition; ii) innovation activity; iii) product and market characteristics and iv) strategic characteristics. Our results indicate that a higher R&D intensity and knowledge acquisition do not explain success. The main differential characteristic is that successful firms have a higher level of innovation activity, since innovation is their strategic priority, being a result of perceiving the key success factors of their markets differently. From the analysis it also follows that the prevalent strategy of successful firms is the niche strategy, with a demand pull focus, and a high proximity to the customer

ISAFRUIT is an integrated European Union Project focussed on increasing fruit consumption as a means to improve human health, through evaluating the fruit chain and addressing bottlenecks therein.The innovations which are being developed throughout the ISAFRUIT Project have been analysed to determine both the success factors and the obstacles in reaching the commercialisation stage. Only 9.58% of the deliverables planned within the Project were focussed on developing technological innovations.There is evidence, however, of successes in the development of new innovations arising from the ISAFRUIT Project, with several other potential innovations in the pipeline. Of the technologies identified, 67% are still at the “invention stage”; that is, the stage prior to bridging the so-called “valley of death”, the stage between an invention and an innovation. Those which are considered to have moved over the “valley of death” either had industry partners included in the Project, or had consulted with industry to ensure that the technology was relevant, or met a recognised industry need. Many of the technologies which made less progress did not have the same interactions with industry. A number of other issues were identified which prevented further progress towards innovation. The need for scientists to publish scientific papers, both for their career pathways and to increase their chances of future funding, was identified as one issue, although the filing of patents is now becoming more accepted and recognised. The patenting system is considered complex by many scientists and is not well-understood. Finally, agreements between partners on the sharing of intellectual property rights can cause a delay in the innovation process.

Este artículo focaliza su atención en las relaciones que la empresa establece con la comunidad y que van más allá del respeto a la normativa vigente; es lo que se denomina la agenda social. Se recomienda que su gestión dé respuesta a las necesidades de negocio de la empresa. Filantropía orientada a conseguir impactos y resultados exige que la empresa haya diseñado previamente su propia estrategia en sus relaciones con la comunidad: qué impacto desea obtener, qué resultados y, a continuación, qué productos va a realizar, mediante qué proceso, con qué recursos económicos, financieros y humanos, cómo la agenda social va a fortalecerse y beneficiarse de los recursos internos de la empresa. Los proyectos y actividades que la empresa realice en cooperación estratégica con la comunidad se deben evaluar periódicamente.

Congestion costs are emerging as one of the most important challenges faced by metropolitan planners and transport authorities in first world economies. In US these costs were as high as 78 million dollars in 2005 and are growing due to fast increases in travel delays. In order to solve the current and severe levels of congestion the US department of transportation have recently started a program to initiate congestion pricing in five metropolitan areas. In this context it is important to determine those factors helping its implementation and success, but also the problems or difficulties associated with charging projects. In this article we analyze worldwide experiences with urban road charging in order to extract interesting and helpful lessons for policy makers engaged in congestion pricing projects and for those interested in the introduction of traffic management tools to regulate the entrance to big cities.

El present estudi és el desenvolupament d’un pla de viabilitat per saber si una idea de negoci pot ésser rendible. Consisteix en una anàlisi sobre els diferents factors que componen un pla de negoci. Així com el pla de màrqueting, el pla d’operacions, el pla d’organització i el pla econòmic financer. L’empresa anomenada Ibericosandwich es dedicarà a produir i distribuir sandvitxos envasats, en el mercat espanyol. Amb el pla de negoci s’ha analitzat el mercat i les oportunitats, i s’ha pogut observar que hi ha un segment de mercat que està sense explotar, que consisteix a oferir-hi una gamma alta de sandvitxos. És un projecte que inclou una anàlisi econòmica financera, amb l’objectiu de reduir el risc i poder obtenir la màxima rendibilitat amb aquesta oportunitat que se’ns presenta.

I analyze, in the context of business and science research collaboration, how the characteristics of partnership agreements are the result of an optimal contract between partners. The final outcome depends on the structure governing the partnership, and on the informational problems towards the efforts involved. The positive effect that the effort of each party has on the success of the other party, makes collaboration a preferred solution. Divergence in research goals may, however, create conflicts between partners. This paper shows how two different structures of partnership governance (a centralized, and a decentralized ones) may optimally use the type of project to motivate the supply of non-contractible efforts. Decentralized structure, however, always choose a project closer to its own preferences. We use a threshold seemingly unrelated regressions specification to assess whether the Central and East European countries (CEECs) are synchronized in their business cycles to the Euro-area. This specification is useful in two ways: First, it takes into account the common institutional factors and the similarities across CEECs in their process of economic transition. Second, it captures business cycle asymmetries by allowing for the presence of two distinct regimes for the CEECs. As the CEECs are strongly affected by the Euro-area these regimes may be associated with Euro-area expansions and contractions. We discuss representation, estimation by maximum likelihood and inference. The methodology is illustrated by using monthly industrial production in 8 CEECs. The results show that apart from Lithuania the rest of the CEECs experience “normal” growth when the Euro-area contracts and “high” growth when the Euro-area expands. Given that the CEECs are “catching up” with the Euro-area this result shows that most CEECs seem synchronized to the Euro-area cycle. Keywords: Threshold SURE; asymmetry; business cycles; CEECs. This project deals with the generation of profitability and the distribution of its benefits. Inspired by Davis (1947, 1955), we define profitability as the ratio of revenue to cost. Profitability is not as popular a measure of business financial performance as profit, the difference between revenue and cost. Regardless of its popularity, however, profitability is surely a useful financial performance measure. Our primary objective in this project is to identify the factors that generate change in profitability. One set of factors, which we refer to as sources, consists of changes in quantities and prices of outputs and inputs. Individual quantity changes aggregate to the overall impact of quantity change on profitability change, which we call productivity change. Individual price changes aggregate to the overall impact of price change on profitability change, which we call price recovery change. In this framework profitability change consists exclusively of productivity change and price recovery change. A second set of factors, which we refer to as drivers, consists of phenomena such as technical change, change in the efficiency of resource allocation, and the impact of economies of scale. The ability of management to harness these factors drives productivity change, which is one component of profitability change. Thus the term sources refers to quantities and prices of individual outputs and inputs, whose changes influence productivity change or price recovery change, either of which influences profitability change. The term drivers refers to phenomena related to technology and management that influence productivity change (but not price recovery change), and hence profitability change.

We will present an analysis of data from a literature review and semi-structured interviews with experts on OER, to identify different aspects of OER business models and to establish how the success of the OER initiatives is measured. The results collected thus far show that two different business models for OER initiatives exist, but no data on their success or failure is published. We propose a framework for measuring success of OER initiatives.

In the context of the digital business ecosystems, small organizations cooperate between them in order to achieve common goals or offer new services for expanding their markets. There are different approaches for these cooperation models such as virtual enterprises, virtual organizations or dynamic electronic institutions which in their lifecycle have in common a dissolution phase. However this phase has not been studied deeply in the current literature and it lacks formalization. In this paper a first approach for achieving and managing the dissolution phase is proposed, as well as a CBR process in order to support it in a multi-agent system

Using Global Entrepreneurship Monitor data for 41 countries this study investigates the impact of business exit on entrepreneurial activity at the country level. The paper distinguishes between two types of entrepreneurial activity according with the motive to start a new business: entrepreneurs driven by opportunity and necessity motives. The findings indicate that exits have a positive impact on future levels of entrepreneurial activity in a country. For each exit in a given year, a larger proportion of entrepreneurial activity the following year. Moreover, this e ffect turns out to be higher for opportunity entrepreneurs. The findings indicate that both types of entrepreneurial activity rates are influenced by the same factors and in the same direction. However, for some factors we find a di fferential impact on the entrepreneurship. The results show some important implications given that business exit may be overcome when there is a necessity motivation. This has important implications for both researchers and policy makers.  L’emprenedoria és una de les àrees de recerca que han tingut un major creixement en les dècades recents. En aquest camp, l’anàlisi del comportament dels emprenedors immigrants ha estat reconeguda com un dels temes amb un important increment d’estudis relacionats. En aquests moments, el fenomen de la immigració és un dels processos socials més importants i amb una major repercussió en el continent europeu, i el fet que hi hagi més iniciatives emprenedores liderades per immigrants que per nadius fa que l’anàlisi i l’exploració d’aquest tema tinguin un atractiu especial. Malgrat tot, i encara que en els darrers anys el nombre d’estudis que pretenen donar una explicació a aquest fenomen ha incrementat, la majoria dels estudis l’han analitzat des d’un punt de vista qualitatiu i centrant-se en situacions regionals específiques i grups concrets, sense que se n’hagin pogut extreure conclusions generals sobre el comportament emprenedor immigrant. De manera que uns dels aspectes clau que un estudi en profunditat requereix són ressaltar aquells factors que contribueixen a distingir el comportament emprenedor immigrant del nadiu, així com aquells factors que podrien motivar l’èxit o el fracàs d’aquest tipus d’iniciatives i com aquests factors condicionarien la resta del teixit empresarial. En aquest context, el principal objectiu d’aquest projecte consisteix en l’anàlisi de les característiques distintives del procés emprenedor dels immigrants. Es pretén abordar aquest objectiu desenvolupant diferents metodologies i combinant diferents fonts d’informació que permetin captar la situació i assolir una comprensió més rica del fenomen estudiat. Els principals resultats obtinguts ens han portat a entendre aspectes que afavoreixen l’emprenedoria immigrant, tals com una menor aversió al risc i un major control percebut. A més, s’han posat de manifest algunes barreres legals amb les que s’han d’enfrontar els emprenedors immigrants a Catalunya.

L’estudi realitzat ha abordat quines són les competències i els factors clau que estudiants universitaris d’origen immigrant consideren que han estat claus per arribar a la universitat, assolint així l’èxit educatiu. S’han escollit estudiants que haguessin fet l’escolaritat obligatòria total o parcialment a Catalunya.Per dur a terme la recerca s’ha treballat amb relats de vida (un total de 13 escrits) i narracions audiovisuals (amb un total de 4 produccions), essent finalment 17 les evidències vàlides. Finalment, s’ha elaborat, administrat i processat un qüestionari d’opinió que s’ha remès a 2472 estudiants de la Universitat de Barcelona, dels quals hem aconseguit 128 respostes considerades vàlides. Els relats s’han analitzat amb un procediment inductiu, procedint a una lectura exhaustiva de les paraules dels participants i anant identificant quines són les competències i els factors clau que ells consideraven que els havien ajudat a arribar a la universitat o que, tot i no ser ells conscients, nosaltres identificàvem com a tals. Pel que fa a les narracions audiovisuals, es va dur a terme una anàlisi tant del contingut, tenint com a referència els resultats obtinguts als relats escrits, com d’aspectes més tècnics, centrats en la imatge i el so. Per acabar, els qüestionaris s’han analitzat a partir de processos bàsics d’estadística descriptiva. Pel que fa als resultats obtinguts, respecte a l’eix de competències, la més destacada és la d’autonomia i iniciativa personals, lligada a la responsabilitat i autoexigència. Respecte a l’eix d’èxit educatiu, destaca el paper del professorat, tant pel suport que els ofereixen com per les expectatives que dipositen en ells. I, per acabar, respecte a l’eix d’inclusió social, els aspectes que l’afavoreixen es centren sobretot en el recolzament de la família, en l’entorn més immediat i en el fet d’entendre la possibilitat de viure amb altres cultures com un enriquiment.
