Automatic filtering and substantiation of drug safety signals

Drug safety issues pose serious health threats to the population and constitute a major cause of mortality worldwide. Due to the prominent implications to both public health and the pharmaceutical industry, it is of great importance to unravel the molecular mechanisms by which an adverse drug reaction can be potentially elicited. These mechanisms can be investigated by placing the pharmaco-epidemiologically detected adverse drug reaction in an information-rich context and by exploiting all currently available biomedical knowledge to substantiate it. We present a computational framework for the biological annotation of potential adverse drug reactions. First, the proposed framework investigates previous evidences on the drug-event association in the context of biomedical literature (signal filtering). Then, it seeks to provide a biological explanation (signal substantiation) by exploring mechanistic connections that might explain why a drug produces a specific adverse reaction. The mechanistic connections include the activity of the drug, related compounds and drug metabolites on protein targets, the association of protein targets to clinical events, and the annotation of proteins (both protein targets and proteins associated with clinical events) to biological pathways. Hence, the workflows for signal filtering and substantiation integrate modules for literature and database mining, in silico drug-target profiling, and analyses based on gene-disease networks and biological pathways. Application examples of these workflows carried out on selected cases of drug safety signals are discussed. The methodology and workflows presented offer a novel approach to explore the molecular mechanisms underlying adverse drug reactions

Internet i salut: què en pensa i com l'utilitza el personal sanitari d'un EAP. Una aproximació

Resultats d'una enquesta passada als assistents a una sessió clínia en un EAP. Els objectius de l'enquesta, en relació amb els professionals de la salut, són: conèixer l'ús que fan d'Internet en l'àmbit professional; conèixer quin ús fan de la prescripció web; saber si utilitzen el correu electrònic per comunicar-se amb els pacients; saber com perceben la consulta sobre informació mèdica o de salut a Internet per part dels seus pacients; i, finalment, identificar els recursos informatius sobre salut a Internet que utilitzen més, en relació amb els seus pacients.

Sessió clínica a un EAP amb dos objectius: proporcionar als professionals sanitaris de l'EAP orientacions bàsiques per ajudar els pacients a avaluar la informació sobre temes de salut localitzada a Internet, i promoure entre els professionals sanitaris l'ús de la prescripció web per formentar l'autonomia dels pacients. El contingut de la sessió va ser: breu introducció a Internet, tendències actuals en e-salut, criteris d'avaluació de pàgines web, segells de qualitat i prescripció web.

Els usos d'internet, les xarxes socials i els jocs online, concretament els MMORPG

L’objectiu d’aquest treball és descriure els riscos i les possibilitats d’Internet i les Web 2.0 i la importància de com utilitzem Internet, les xarxes socials i els jocs de rol massius en línia (MMORPG). A la recerca han participat 34 estudiants universitaris, els quals han respost un qüestionari per determinar els usos, abusos, les conductes de risc i la possible addicció a Internet o a alguna aplicació 2.0. Per últim, hi ha una proposta de disseny d’un projecte per a la sensibilització d’educadors/es socials entorn d’aquestes eines.

Augmented state Kalman filtering for AUV navigation

Addresses the problem of estimating the motion of an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV), while it constructs a visual map ("mosaic" image) of the ocean floor. The vehicle is equipped with a down-looking camera which is used to compute its motion with respect to the seafloor. As the mosaic increases in size, a systematic bias is introduced in the alignment of the images which form the mosaic. Therefore, this accumulative error produces a drift in the estimation of the position of the vehicle. When the arbitrary trajectory of the AUV crosses over itself, it is possible to reduce this propagation of image alignment errors within the mosaic. A Kalman filter with augmented state is proposed to optimally estimate both the visual map and the vehicle position

El relato audiovisual publicitario del siglo XXI. Del medio televisión al medio internet. ¿Nuevos medios o nuevas formas de consumo audiovisual?

Estudiar la comunicación publicitaria del siglo XXI nos permite entender la importancia del desarrollo actual de este tipo de comunicación. Sin duda un desarrollo que afecta enormemente en el modo en que las marcas llevan a cabo sus estrategias de publicidad con su público. Pero sin duda el formato audiovisual sigue siendo el formato más utilizado por anunciantes y agencias para contactar con su público. El siglo XX estuvo definido por el desarrollo del medio televisión, el siglo XXI por el desarrollo del medio internet, pero la pregunta que realmente nos plantea este cambio mediático es conocer si estamos hablando de un cambio de medio o de un cambio en las estrategias y formatos publicitarios audiovisuales utilizados para llegar al receptor. Los mensajes publicitarios actuales resaltan por una mayor interactividad con el espectador, un contacto voluntario de éste, en muchos casos, con nuestra campaña e incluso una participación activa de nuestro consumidor en la distribución de la campaña. DEA (tesina) que analitza quin és el paper que juguen els blocs dintre de la Web 2.0, articulant-se al voltant de tres eixos: la creació de la identitat virtual, les xarxes socials generades a través de la blocosfera i les implicacions econòmiques i socials que se'n deriven. La pregunta central és de quina manera, si ho fan, els blocs contribueixen a modificar fòrmules de lectura i participació tant d'àmbit personal com públic en les agendes informatives. I si aquesta participació genera canvis significatius a nivell econòmic i psicosocial.

El estudio tiene por objeto, la comprensión de la forma en que los artistas llevan a cabo sus proyectos, el conocimiento de las razones del uso del crowdfunding y la importancia de dicha práctica en la viabilidad del proyecto. La obtención de una visión amplia del desarrollo del fenómeno en el ámbito musical de España, atendiendo a las tendencias existentes y a qué tipo de artistas recurren a dicha práctica y el entendimiento del modelo de funcionamiento de ‘Verkami’: sus características, requisitos y los motivos de su elección frente a otras plataformas.

Abstract.

Spatial filtering for pilot-aided WCDMA systems: a semi-blind subspace approach

This paper proposes a spatial filtering technique forthe reception of pilot-aided multirate multicode direct-sequencecode division multiple access (DS/CDMA) systems such as widebandCDMA (WCDMA). These systems introduce a code-multiplexedpilot sequence that can be used for the estimation of thefilter weights, but the presence of the traffic signal (transmittedat the same time as the pilot sequence) corrupts that estimationand degrades the performance of the filter significantly. This iscaused by the fact that although the traffic and pilot signals areusually designed to be orthogonal, the frequency selectivity of thechannel degrades this orthogonality at hte receiving end. Here,we propose a semi-blind technique that eliminates the self-noisecaused by the code-multiplexing of the pilot. We derive analyticallythe asymptotic performance of both the training-only andthe semi-blind techniques and compare them with the actual simulatedperformance. It is shown, both analytically and via simulation,that high gains can be achieved with respect to training-onlybasedtechniques.

La distribución de cine en Internet y su implicación en los procesos de producción cinematográfica

Estudi sobre com Internet ha canviat la manera de distribuir curtmetratges i llargmetratges, i la influència d’aquests canvis als processos previs de producció. Es complementa l’estudi bibliogràfic de les fases de producció amb entrevistes a tres cineastes per comprovar que Internet ha generat alguns canvis a l’hora de plantejar certs treballs cinematogràfics.
