Theoretical study of the second-order vibrational Stark effect

The behaviour of the harmonic infrared frequency of diatomic molecules subjected to moderate static uniform electric fields is analysed. The potential energy expression has been developed as a function of a static uniform electric field, which brings about a formulation describing the frequency versus field strength curve. With the help of the first and second derivatives of the expressions obtained, which correspond to the first- and second-order Stark effects, it was possible to find the maxima of the frequency versus field strength curves for a series of molecules using a Newton-Raphson search. A method is proposed which requires only the calculation of a few energy derivatives at a particular value of the field strength. At the same time, the expression for the dependence of the interatomic distance on the electric field strength is derived and the minimum of this curve is found for the same species. An LMI approach to H∞ synchronization of second-order neutral master-slave systems

The H∞ synchronization problem of the master and slave structure of a second-order neutral master-slave systems with time-varying delays is presented in this paper. Delay-dependent sufficient conditions for the design of a delayed output-feedback control are given by Lyapunov-Krasovskii method in terms of a linear matrix inequality (LMI). A controller, which guarantees H∞ synchronization of the master and slave structure using some free weighting matrices, is then developed. Multiculturalitat i interculturalitat en la Història de Catalunya

La finalitat de la recerca, concebuda com a recerca aplicada ha consistit en confegir un manual d’història de Catalunya (Catalunya+suma) especialment destinat a la immigració. El treball havia de contextualizar aspectes generals d’història política, social i cultural (endògenes), amb les aportacions, ètniques i culturals (exògenes) rebudes a Catalunya al llarg del temps i que han configurat al capdavall la societat catalana, entesa com a formació cultural i socio-política, les variables de la qual han estat en contínua coevolució. Per tant tractar la dialèctica de com, en un període de temps, les aportacions exògenes és converteixen en endògenes, i sempre en una perspectiva temporal i històrica, ha estat l’objectiu del treball. La recerca bibliogràfica i la transposició didàctica han estat les principals components metodològiques. S’han tingut especialment en compte les aportacions de la historiografia contemporània, tot i que s’ha fet un esforç per integrar coneixement generat dels del punt de vista de l’arqueologia i l’antropologia, història de l’art, sociologia, etc. Pel que fa a la recerca didàctica el tret més important ha estat, precisament, el procés de transposició didàctica destinat a convertir el saber disciplinar en saber comprensible. El projecte “Multiculturalitat i interculturalitat en la Història de Catalunya” ha generat un estudi històric i didàctic de síntesi sobre història del país que es concreta en el manual “Catalunya+Suma”. Es tracta d’un manual d‘història de Catalunya dirigit a un horitzó d’ampli espectre i de manera molt especial als immigrants. Cal destacar també que el treball te un caràcter inicial i iniciàtic i que te possibilitats de desenvolupament posterior a partir de l’elaboració de materials didàctics i guies patrimonials expressament adreçada a la immigració i entorns afins. El manual “Catalunya+suma" vol incidir, prioritàriament en la formació inicial i permanent de la immigració, i en els espais formals, i no formals, d’ensenyament i aprenentatge.

The curvature of the conical intersection seam: an approximate second-order analysis

We present a method for analyzing the curvature (second derivatives) of the conical intersection hyperline at an optimized critical point. Our method uses the projected Hessians of the degenerate states after elimination of the two branching space coordinates, and is equivalent to a frequency calculation on a single Born-Oppenheimer potential-energy surface. Based on the projected Hessians, we develop an equation for the energy as a function of a set of curvilinear coordinates where the degeneracy is preserved to second order (i.e., the conical intersection hyperline). The curvature of the potential-energy surface in these coordinates is the curvature of the conical intersection hyperline itself, and thus determines whether one has a minimum or saddle point on the hyperline. The equation used to classify optimized conical intersection points depends in a simple way on the first- and second-order degeneracy splittings calculated at these points. As an example, for fulvene, we show that the two optimized conical intersection points of C2v symmetry are saddle points on the intersection hyperline. Accordingly, there are further intersection points of lower energy, and one of C2 symmetry - presented here for the first time - is found to be the global minimum in the intersection space

The difficulties of the counterpoise (CP) correction in open-shell systems were also discussed. The calculations were performed by a program which was used for testing the new variants of the theory. It was shown that the CP correction for the diabatic surfaces should be preferred to the adiabatic ones

Hem volgut elaborar aquest manual i recull informatiu que permeti a qualsevol poder impartir un taller de reciclatge i investigar en la matèria i alhora difondre els treballs que es desenvolupen en els centres amb accions expositives, participació a fires relacionades i de renom, entre d’altres. Aquest any hem començat aquest projecte i hem acomplert els objectius que ens havíem proposat, entre aquests destaquem la participació a la fira de reciclatge Drap-Art que es fa a Barcelona durant el mes de desembre, fira de renom internacional amb presentació prèvia de projecte per poder participar. La importància de gestionar bé els residus que generem en la nostra societat i en especial als nostres centres, implica haver de donar eines als alumnes dels tallers artístics dels centres penitenciaris de Catalunya, conscienciar-los i conscienciar l’entorn de la presó i fer-los servir amb la idea de construcció, d’ideació i creativitat que tot això implica per als interns que hi participen. El reciclatge creatiu és el fruit d’un treball molt més complex que implica una educació i un treball a l’aula per tal de garantir la formació de l’alumne en la sostenibilitat i que d’aquesta manera tingui respecte pel medi ambient, per l’entorn i, per tant, les persones que hi viuen, tant dintre com fora en la vida en llibertat.

The impact of labour market status on second and higher-order births. A comparative study of Denmark, Italy, Spain and United Kingdom

This paper investigates the effects of women‘s labour force participation on fertility, as well as the effects of the combined labour force participation of both members of a couple. It specifically focuses on such dimensions as unemployment, earnings, temporary contracts and part-time jobs, and it shows that their effects differ in accordance with national institutions and labour market regulations. Event-history methods and a longitudinal sample of the European Community Household Panel are used in the analyses, concerning the years 1993-2000. The results show that labour market insecurity of one or both members of a couple has a particularly strong impact in reducing birth rates in the Southern European countries studied. The more conventional model of men’s employment combined with housewifery has a positive impact on second or higher order births in United Kingdom, Spain and Italy, while in Denmark the effect is the opposite. These differences are consistent with different national models of combining parental responsibilities and participation by gender across the life course.

Buidatge automàtic i manual dels mateixos textos: convergències i divergències

Quan es va plantejar aquest treball, a l’Observatori de Neologia s’havia substituït el buidatge manual de textos per un de semiautomàtic. No s’havia realitzat cap estudi contrastiu entre ambdues metodologies, i els resultats presentats en aquest projecte donen resposta a les limitacions de cada mètode i llur aportacions.

Calibration of stochastic volatility models via second order approximation: the Heston model case

Using a suitable Hull and White type formula we develop a methodology to obtain asecond order approximation to the implied volatility for very short maturities. Using thisapproximation we accurately calibrate the full set of parameters of the Heston model. Oneof the reasons that makes our calibration for short maturities so accurate is that we alsotake into account the term-structure for large maturities. We may say that calibration isnot "memoryless", in the sense that the option's behavior far away from maturity doesinfluence calibration when the option gets close to expiration. Our results provide a wayto perform a quick calibration of a closed-form approximation to vanilla options that canthen be used to price exotic derivatives. The methodology is simple, accurate, fast, andit requires a minimal computational cost.

Multi-sample analysis of moment-structures: Asymptotic validity of inferences based on second-order moments

In moment structure analysis with nonnormal data, asymptotic valid inferences require the computation of a consistent (under general distributional assumptions) estimate of the matrix $\Gamma$ of asymptotic variances of sample second--order moments. Such a consistent estimate involves the fourth--order sample moments of the data. In practice, the use of fourth--order moments leads to computational burden and lack of robustness against small samples. In this paper we show that, under certain assumptions, correct asymptotic inferences can be attained when $\Gamma$ is replaced by a matrix $\Omega$ that involves only the second--order moments of the data. The present paper extends to the context of multi--sample analysis of second--order moment structures, results derived in the context of (simple--sample) covariance structure analysis (Satorra and Bentler, 1990). The results apply to a variety of estimation methods and general type of statistics. An example involving a test of equality of means under covariance restrictions illustrates theoretical aspects of the paper.
