A thermal Energy Storage Unit (ESU) could be used to attenuate inherent temperature fluctuations of a cold finger, either from a cryocooler working or due to sudden income heat bursts. An ESU directly coupled to the cold source acts as a thermal buffer temporarily increasing its cooling capacity and providing a better thermal stability of the cold finger (“Power Booster mode”). The energy storage units presented here use an enthalpy reservoir based on the high latent heat of the liquid-vapour transition of neon in the temperature range 38 - 44 K to store up to 900 J, and that uses a 6 liters expansion volume at RT in order to work as a closed system. Experimental results in the power booster mode will be described: in this case, the liquid neon cell was directly coupled to the cold finger of the working cryocooler, its volume (12 cm3) allowing it to store 450 J at around 40 K. 10 W heat bursts were applied, leading to liquid evaporation, with quite reduced temperature changes. The liquid neon reservoir can also work as a temporary cold source to be used after stopping the cryocooler, allowing for a vibration-free environment. In this case the enthalpy reservoir implemented (24 cm3) was linked to the cryocooler cold finger through a gas gap heat switch for thermal coupling/decoupling of the cold finger. We will show that, by controlling the enthalpy reservoir’s pressure, 900 J can be stored at a constant temperature of 40 K as in a triple-point ESU.

The purpose of this project is to understand the outcomes of the implementation of 4 star city hotel from the Vila Galé brand in Maputo, Mozambique, and the conditions under which such project would be financially worthy. Both the tourism market in Mozambique and the Vila Galé Hotels company were studied, aligned with a projection of the operational results. The conclusions allow to infer that this is a project aligned with the overall company strategy and that the sector’s growth prospects in Mozambique would allow to achieve positive results that encourage Vila Galé to invest.

The restoration materials currently used to fill gaps in architectural historical azulejos (e.g. lime or organic resin pastes) usually show serious drawbacks in terms of compatibility, effectiveness and durability. The existing solutions do not fully protect azulejos in outdoor conditions and frequently result in further deterioration. Geopolymers can be a potential solution for azulejo lacunae infill given the chemical-mineralogical similitude to the ceramic body, and also the durability and versatile range of physical properties that can be obtained through the manipulation of their formulation and curing conditions. This work presents and discusses the viability of the use of geopolymeric pastes to fill lacunae in azulejos or to act as “cold” cast ceramic tile surrogates reproducing missing azulejo fragments. The formulation of geopolymers, namely the type of activators, the aluminosilicate source, the amount of water (to meet adequate workability requirements) and curing conditions were studied. The need for post-curing desalination was also considered envisaging their application in the restoration of outdoor architectural historical azulejos frequently exposed to adverse environmental conditions. The possible advantages and disadvantages of the use of geopolymers in the conservation of azulejos are also discussed. Several techniques were used to study the chemical and physical behavior of geopolymers, namely FT-IR, XRD, MIP, SEM-EDS, WDXRF, electrical conductivity, open porosity, bending strength, adhesion strength, water vapour permeability, thermal expansion and hydric expansion. The results indicate that geopolymers are a promising material for restoration of azulejos, exhibiting some properties, such as adhesion to the ceramic substrate, higher than inorganic materials used nowadays, such as aerial lime based pastes.

The advent of bioconjugation impacted deeply the world of sciences and technology. New biomolecules were found, biological processes were understood, and novel methodologies were formed due to the fast expansion of this area. The possibility of creating new effective therapies for diseases like cancer is one of big applications of this now big area of study. Off target toxicity was always the problem of potent small molecules with high activity towards specific tumour targets. However, chemotherapy is now selective due to powerful linkers that connect targeting molecules with affinity to interesting biological receptors and cytotoxic drugs. This linkers must have very specific properties, such as high stability in plasma, no toxicity, no interference with ligand affinity nor drug potency, and at the same time, be able to lyse once inside the target molecule to release the therapeutic warhead. Bipolar environments between tumour intracellular and extracellular medias are usually exploited by this linkers in order to complete this goal. The work done in this thesis explores a new model for that same task, specific cancer drug delivery. Iminoboronates were studied due to its remarkable selective stability towards a wide pH range and endogenous molecules. A fluorescence probe was design to validate this model by creating an Off/On system and determine the payload release location in situ. A process was optimized to synthetize the probe 8-(1-aminoethyl)-7-hydroxy-coumarin (1) through a reductive amination reaction in a microwave reactor with 61 % yield. A method to conjugate this probe to ABBA was also optimized, obtaining the iminoboronate in good yields in mild conditions. The iminoboronate model was studied regarding its stability in several simulated biological environments and each half-life time was determined, showing the conjugate is stable most of the cases except in tumour intracellular systems. The construction of folate-ABBA-coumarin bioconjugate have been made to complete this evaluation. The ability to be uptaken by a cancer cell through endocytosis process and the conjugation delivery of coumarin fluorescence payload are two features to hope for in this construct.
