We start by studying the existence of positive solutions for the differential equation u '' = a(x)u - g(u), with u ''(0) = u(+infinity) = 0, where a is a positive function, and g is a power or a bounded function. In other words, we are concerned with even positive homoclinics of the differential equation. The main motivation is to check that some well-known results concerning the existence of homoclinics for the autonomous case (where a is constant) are also true for the non-autonomous equation. This also motivates us to study the analogous fourth-order boundary value problem {u((4)) - cu '' + a(x)u = vertical bar u vertical bar(p-1)u u'(0) = u'''(0) = 0, u(+infinity) = u'(+infinity) = 0 for which we also find nontrivial (and, in some instances, positive) solutions.

Introdução – A nível mundial, o cancro da mama é o tipo de cancro mais frequente nas mulheres. Estudos têm sugerido que os fatores de estilo de vida (alimentação, consumo de álcool, atividade física) e a adiposidade corporal estão implicados na sua etiologia, sobretudo nos tumores diagnosticados após a menopausa. O objetivo deste artigo foi o de identificar quais os fatores nutricionais e de composição corporal implicados na etiologia da doença e qual a sua relação. Metodologia – Foi realizada uma revisão da literatura referente a estudos de revisão, de coorte e experimentais, de acordo com a temática em estudo. Resultados – As mulheres obesas têm maior risco de desenvolver cancro da mama após a menopausa e a adiposidade corporal, localizada na região abdominal, é também fator de risco. A obesidade, além de fator promotor, relaciona-se inversamente com o prognóstico da doença. Relativamente ao padrão alimentar, a ingestão de ácidos gordos saturados confere risco, ainda que com uma associação fraca e, com uma associação modesta, a dieta mediterrânica parece estar associada a um menor risco de cancro da mama pós-menopausa. Conclusão – A adoção de um estilo de vida saudável (alimentação e atividade física) e a obtenção/manutenção de um peso corporal saudável devem ser encorajados para prevenir o cancro da mama. Mais estudos devem ser realizados no futuro para consolidar a associação com outras variáveis dietéticas. ABSTRACT - Background – Breast cancer is worldwide the most common cancer in women. Studies have suggested that lifestyle such as nutrition, alcohol intake and physical activity are enrolled in aetiology, especially in postmenopausal tumours. This review aimed to investigate the relationship between nutritional factors and body composition with the disease. Methods – A selective review of the literature for recent studies and meta-analyses on this topic. Results – Obese women have higher risk to develop breast cancer after menopause. Abdominal adiposity is also a risk factor. Obesity, beside of promote the disease, is also a negative factor of prognoses. In respect to dietary pattern, the intake of saturated fatty acids seems to attribute risk, even if with a weak association. Although with a modest association, Mediterranean diet may be associated with lower breast cancer risk among postmenopausal women. Conclusion – Adopt a healthy lifestyle (nutrition and physical activity) and maintain a healthy body weight should be encouraged to prevent breast cancer. Future research should focus other dietary variables already investigated but still with no clear evidence.

This work addresses the treatment by nanofiltration (NF) of solutions containing NaCN and NH(4)Cl at various pH values. The NF experiments are carried out in a Lab-Unit equipped with NF-270 membranes for model solutions that are surrogates of industrial ammoniacal wastewaters generated in the coke-making processes. The applied pressure is 30 bar. The main objective is the separation of the compounds NaCN and NH(4)Cl and the optimization of this separation as a function of the pH. Membrane performance is highly dependent on solution composition and characteristics, namely on the pH. In fact, the rejection coefficients for the binary model solution containing sodium cyanide are always higher than the rejections coefficients for the ammonium chloride model solution. For ternary solutions (cyanide/ammonium/water) it was observed that for pH values lower than 9 the rejection coefficients to ammonium are well above the ones observed for the cyanides, but for pH values higher than 9.5 there is a drastic decrease in the ammonium rejection coefficients with the increase of the pH. These results take into account the changes that occur in solution, namely, the solute species that are predominant, with the increase of the pH. Solubility measurements of quinizarin. (1,4-dihydroxyanthraquinone), disperse red 9 (1-(methylamino) anthraquinone), and disperse blue 14 (1,4-bis(methylamino)anthraquinone) in supercritical carbon dioxide (SC CO2) were carried out in a flow type apparatus, at a temperature range from (333.2 to 393.2) K and at pressures from (12.0 to 40.0) MPa. Mole fraction solubility of the three dyes decreases in the order quinizarin (2.9 x 10(-6) to 2.9.10(-4)), red 9 (1.4 x 10(-6) to 3.2 x 10(-4)), and blue 14 (7.8 x 10(-8) to 2.2 x 10(-5)). Four semiempirical density based models were used to correlatethe solubility of the dyes in the SC CO2. From the correlation results, the total heat of reaction, heat of vaporization plus the heat of solvation of the solute, were calculated and compared with the results presented in the literature. The solubilities of the three dyes were correlated also applying the Soave-Redlich-Kwong cubic equation of state (SRK CEoS) with classical mixing rules, and the physical properties required for the modeling were estimated and reported.

A new algorithm for the velocity vector estimation of moving ships using Single Look Complex (SLC) SAR data in strip map acquisition mode is proposed. The algorithm exploits both amplitude and phase information of the Doppler decompressed data spectrum, with the aim to estimate both the azimuth antenna pattern and the backscattering coefficient as function of the look angle. The antenna pattern estimation provides information about the target velocity; the backscattering coefficient can be used for vessel classification. The range velocity is retrieved in the slow time frequency domain by estimating the antenna pattern effects induced by the target motion, while the azimuth velocity is calculated by the estimated range velocity and the ship orientation. Finally, the algorithm is tested on simulated SAR SLC data.
