We investigate the crust, upper mantle and mantle transition zone of the Cape Verde hotspot by using seismic P and S receiver functions from several tens of local seismograph stations. We find a strong discontinuity at a depth of similar to 10 km underlain by a similar to 15-km thick layer with a high (similar to 1.9) Vp/Vs velocity ratio. We interpret this discontinuity and the underlying layer as the fossil Moho, inherited from the pre-hotspot era, and the plume-related magmatic underplate. Our uppermost-mantle models are very different from those previously obtained for this region: our S velocity is much lower and there are no indications of low densities. Contrary to previously published arguments for the standard transition zone thickness our data indicate that this thickness under the Cape Verde islands is up to similar to 30 km less than in the ambient mantle. This reduction is a combined effect of a depression of the 410-km discontinuity and an uplift of the 660-km discontinuity. The uplift is in contrast to laboratory data and some seismic data on a negligible dependence of depth of the 660-km discontinuity on temperature in hotspots. A large negative pressure-temperature slope which is suggested by our data implies that the 660-km discontinuity may resist passage of the plume. Our data reveal beneath the islands a reduction of S velocity of a few percent between 470-km and 510-km depths. The low velocity layer in the upper transition zone under the Cape Verde archipelago is very similar to that previously found under the Azores and a few other hotspots. In the literature there are reports on a regional 520-km discontinuity, the impedance of which is too large to be explained by the known phase transitions. Our observations suggest that the 520-km discontinuity may present the base of the low-velocity layer in the transition zone. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The objectives of this study were to (1) conduct an elemental characterization of airborne particles sampled in Cape Verde and (2) assess the influence of Sahara desert on local suspended particles. Particulate matter (PM10) was collected in Praia city (14°94'N; 23°49'W) with a low-volume sampler in order to characterize its chemical composition by k0-INAA. The filter samples were first weighed and subsequently irradiated at the Portuguese Research Reactor. Results showed that PM10 concentrations in Cape Verde markedly exceeded the health-based air quality standards defined by the European Union (EU), World Health Organization (WHO), and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), in part due to the influence of Sahara dust transport. The PM10 composition was characterized essentially by high concentrations of elements originating from the soil (K, Sm, Co, Fe, Sc, Rb, Cr, Ce, and Ba) and sea (Na), and low concentrations of anthropogenic elements (As, Zn, and Sb). In addition, the high concentrations of PM measured in Cape Verde suggest that health of the population may be less affected compared with other sites where PM10 concentrations are lower but more enriched with toxic elements.

We present an analysis and characterization of the regional seismicity recorded by a temporary broadband seismic network deployed in the Cape Verde archipelago between November 2007 and September 2008. The detection of earthquakes was based on spectrograms, allowing the discrimination from low-frequency volcanic signals, resulting in 358 events of which 265 were located, the magnitudes usually being smaller than 3. For the location, a new 1-D P-velocity model was derived for the region showing a crust consistent with an oceanic crustal structure. The seismicity is located mostly offshore the westernmost and geologically youngest areas of the archipelago, near the islands of Santo Antao and Sao Vicente in the NW and Brava and Fogo in the SW. The SW cluster has a lower occurrence rate and corresponds to seismicity concentrated mainly along an alignment between Brava and the Cadamosto seamount presenting normal faulting mechanisms. The existence of the NW cluster, located offshore SW of Santo Antao, was so far unknown and concentrates around a recently recognized submarine cone field; this cluster presents focal depths extending from the crust to the upper mantle and suggests volcanic unrest No evident temporal behaviour could be perceived, although the events tend to occur in bursts of activity lasting a few days. In this recording period, no significant activity was detected at Fogo volcano, the most active volcanic edifice in Cape Verde. The seismicity characteristics point mainly to a volcanic origin. The correlation of the recorded seismicity with active volcanic structures agrees with the tendency for a westward migration of volcanic activity in the archipelago as indicated by the geologic record. We propose a 3-D gravity model for the volcanic structure of the island of Maio (Cape Verde archipelago) with the objective of solving some open questions concerning the geometry and depth of the intrusive Central Igneous Complex. A gravity survey was made covering almost the entire surface of the island. The gravity data was inverted through a non-linear 3-D approach which provided a model constructed in a random growth process. The residual Bouguer gravity field shows a single positive anomaly presenting an elliptic shape with a NWSE trending long axis. This Bouguer gravity anomaly is slightly off-centred with the island but its outline is concordant with the surface exposure of the Central Igneous Complex. The gravimetric modelling shows a high-density volume whose centre of mass is about 4500 m deep. With increasing depth, and despite the restricted gravimetric resolution, the horizontal sections of the model suggest the presence of two distinct bodies, whose relative position accounts for the elongated shape of the high positive Bouguer gravity anomaly. These bodies are interpreted as magma chambers whose coeval volcanic counterparts are no longer preserved. The orientation defined by the two bodies is similar to that of other structures known in the southern group of the Cape Verde islands, thus suggesting a possible structural control constraining the location of the plutonic intrusions.

Neste trabalho é efectuado, não só o diagnóstico em regime permanente, mas também o estudo, simulação e análise do comportamento dinâmico da rede eléctrica da ilha de São Vicente em Cabo Verde. Os estudos de estabilidade transitória desempenham um importante papel, tanto no planeamento como na operação dos sistemas de potência. Tais estudos são realizados, em grande parte, através de simulação digital no domínio do tempo, utilizando integração numérica para resolver as equações não-lineares que modelam a dinâmica do sistema e dependem da existência de registos reais de perturbação (ex: osciloperturbografia). O objectivo do trabalho será também verificar a aplicabilidade dos requisitos técnicos que as unidades geradoras devem ter, no que concerne ao controlo de tensão, estabelecidos na futura regulamentação europeia desenvolvida pela ENTSO-E (European Network Transmission System Operator for Electricity). De entre os requisitos analisou-se a capacidade das máquinas existentes suportarem cavas de tensão decorrentes de curto-circuitos trifásicos simétricos, Fault Ride Through, no ponto de ligação à rede. Identificaram-se para o efeito os factores que influenciam a estabilidade desta rede, em regime perturbado nomeadamente: (i) duração do defeito, (ii) caracterização da carga, com e sem a presença do sistema de controlo de tensão (AVR) em unidades de geração síncronas. Na ausência de registos reais sobre o comportamento do sistema, conclui-se que este é sensível à elasticidade das cargas em particular do tipo potência constante, existindo risco de perda de estabilidade, neste caso, para defeitos superiores a 5ms sem AVR. A existência de AVR nesta rede afigura-se como indispensável para garantir estabilidade de tensão sendo contudo necessário proceder a uma correcta parametrização.

This work addresses the present-day (<100 ka) mantle heterogeneity in the Azores region through the study of two active volcanic systems from Terceira Island. Our study shows that mantle heterogeneities are detectable even when "coeval" volcanic systems (Santa Barbara and Fissural) erupted less than 10 km away. These volcanic systems, respectively, reflect the influence of the Terceira and D. Joao de Castro Bank end-members defined by Beier et at (2008) for the Terceira Rift Santa Barbara magmas are interpreted to be the result of mixing between a HIMU-type component, carried to the upper mantle by the Azores plume, and the regional depleted MORB magmas/source. Fissural lavas are characterized by higher Ba/Nb and Nb/U ratios and less radiogenic Pb-206/Pb-204, Nd-143/Nd-144 and Hf-176/Hf-177, requiring the small contribution of delaminated sub-continental lithospheric mantle residing in the upper mantle. Published noble gas data on lavas from both volcanic systems also indicate the presence of a relatively undegassed component, which is interpreted as inherited from a lower mantle reservoir sampled by the ascending Azores plume. As inferred from trace and major elements, melting began in the garnet stability field, while magma extraction occurred within the spinel zone. The intra-volcanic system's chemical heterogeneity is mainly explained by variable proportions of the above-mentioned local end-members and by crystal fractionation processes. (C) 2011 Elsevier By. Introdução – A avaliação da aptidão física permite a identificação de níveis de incapacidade e risco de perda funcional, pelo que é extremamente útil na estruturação de programas de atividade física específicos, que constituem a primeira intervenção no que toca à intervenção não-farmacológica na Hipertensão Arterial Sistémica (HAS). Objetivo – Avaliar a aptidão física funcional e os níveis de atividade física de idosos hipertensos da Cidade da Praia – Cabo Verde. Metodologia – A flexibilidade, força e resistência muscular, resistência aeróbia e composição corporal foram avaliadas através da bateria de Fullerton e dinamometria isométrica manual. O nível de atividade física foi avaliado pelo questionário Seven Day Physical Activity Recall (7D-PAR). Resultados – Participaram 75 idosos, com idades compreendidas entre os 60 e os 99 anos, 68% dos quais eram mulheres, com índice de massa corporal (IMC) de 25,2±5,4, com diagnóstico clínico de HAS. O tempo despendido em atividades de intensidade moderada encontrava-se dentro dos valores recomendados, embora a atividade intensa se encontrasse muito abaixo do recomendado e não efetuassem qualquer exercício de força e flexibilidade. A resistência aeróbia expressa pelo Teste 6 Minutos de Marcha (T6MM) apresentou valores médios baixos (293,5±112,2m), bem como a flexibilidade e a força de preensão. Esta associação é um indicador de baixa capacidade funcional. Conclusão – Os baixos níveis de aptidão física apresentados, associados a baixos níveis de atividade física indiciam baixa capacidade funcional e justificam a necessidade urgente da inserção de programas de atividade física nesta população.
