Buying behavior and competition in the software market

In the actual world, the impact of the software buying decisions has a rising relevance in social and economic terms. This research tries to explain it focusing on the organizations buying decisions of Operating Systems and Office Suites for personal computers and the impact on the competition between incumbent and alternative players in the market in these software categories, although the research hypotheses and conclusions may extend to other software categories and platforms. We concluded that in this market beside brand image, product features or price, other factors could have influence in the buying choices. Network effect, switching costs, local network effect, lock-in or consumer heterogeneity all have influence in the buying decision, protecting the incumbent and making it difficult for the competitive alternatives, based mainly on product features and price, to gain market share to the incumbent. This happens in a stronger way in the Operating Systems category.

Impact of a price-maker pumped storage hydro unit on the integration of wind energy in power systems

The increasing integration of larger amounts of wind energy into power systems raises important operational issues, such as the balance between power generation and demand. The pumped storage hydro (PSH) units are one possible solution to mitigate this problem, once they can store the excess of energy in the periods of higher generation and lower demand. However, the behaviour of a PSH unit may differ considerably from the expected in terms of wind power integration when it operates in a liberalized electricity market under a price-maker context. In this regard, this paper models and computes the optimal PSH weekly scheduling in a price-taker and price-maker scenarios, either when the PSH unit operates in standalone and integrated in a portfolio of other generation assets. Results show that the price-maker standalone PSH will integrate less wind power in comparison with the price-taker situation. Moreover, when the PSH unit is integrated in a portfolio with a base load power plant, the role of the price elasticity of demand may completely change the operational profile of the PSH unit. Estudo comparativo de soluções de materiais poliméricos em redes prediais de água e esgotos

O objetivo deste trabalho é estudar as tubagens de polímeros aplicadas nas redes prediais de águas e esgotos. A utilização deste tipo de material tem vindo a aumentar, mas o conhecimento por parte de projetistas e instaladores não tem vindo a acompanhar o ritmo de crescimento. Esta análise irá permitir um maior conhecimento dos materiais disponíveis e das suas caraterísticas próprias, o que induz a uma escolha acertada e a uma instalação adequada. No início do trabalho clarificou-se o significado e a origem dos polímeros, contando a sua história. Visitou-se a fábrica de tubos Fopil para pesquisar o processamento de polímeros. Explicou-se o fabrico de polímeros, que varia de acordo com as propriedades e aplicações desejadas. Os tubos poliméricos disponíveis no mercado para abastecimento de águas e esgotos foram analisados em relação às suas caraterísticas, vantagens e desvantagens e ligações disponíveis. Existem cuidados a ter no transporte, armazenamento e manuseamento dos tubos. Após a análise das caraterísticas técnicas, fez-se o estudo económico para os tubos existentes no mercado. Para isso foi considerado o abastecimento a um edifício multifamiliar com seis apartamentos. O projetista deve estar sempre informado, quer a nível tecnológico, quer a nível económico, para assim poder fazer a escolha mais acertada a nível de qualidade e a nível de preço. Ao realizar este estudo concluiu-se que nas instalações de redes de abastecimento de águas, o PB é o que tem o preço mais atrativo e tem caraterísticas ótimas. O PE-X tem o preço mais elevado, mas a sua qualidade não é proporcional ao seu preço. Nas instalações de redes de esgotos o material mais económico é o PP, que é o que apresenta as melhores caraterísticas.

Genus for knots and links in renormalizable templates with several branch nodes

We apply kneading theory to describe the knots and links generated by the iteration of renormalizable nonautonomous dynamical systems with reducible kneading invariants, in terms of the links corresponding to each factor. As a consequence we obtain explicit formulas for the genus for this kind of knots and links.

Scheduling of a hydro producer considering head-dependency, price scenarios and risk-aversion

In this paper, a mixed-integer quadratic programming approach is proposed for the short-term hydro scheduling problem, considering head-dependency, discontinuous operating regions and discharge ramping constraints. As new contributions to earlier studies, market uncertainty is introduced in the model via price scenarios, and risk aversion is also incorporated by limiting the volatility of the expected profit through the conditional value-at-risk. Our approach has been applied successfully to solve a case Study based on one of the main Portuguese cascaded hydro systems, requiring a negligible computational time.
