The synthesis, structural characterization, voltammetric experiments and antibacterial activity of [Ni(sulfisoxazole)(2)(H2O)(4)] center dot 2H(2)O and [Ni(sulfapyridine)(2)] were studied and compared with similar previously reported copper complexes. [Ni(sulfisoxazole)(2)(H2O)(4)] center dot 2H(2)O crystallized in a monoclinic system, space group C2/c where the nickel ion was in a slightly distorted octahedral environment, coordinated with two sulfisoxazole molecules through the heterocyclic nitrogen and four water molecules. [Ni(sulfapyridine)(2)] crystallized in a orthorhombic crystal system, space group Pnab. The nickel ion was in a distorted octahedral environment, coordinated by two aryl amine N from two sulfonamides acting as monodentate ligands and four N atoms (two sulfonamidic N and two heterocyclic N) from two different sulfonamide molecules acting as bidentate ligands. Differential pulse voltammograms were recorded showing irreversible peaks at 1040 and 1070 mV, respectively, attributed to Ni(II)/Ni(III) process. [Ni(sulfisoxazole)(2)(H2O)(4)] center dot 2H(2)O and [Ni(sulfapyridine)(2)] presented different antibacterial behavior against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli from the similar copper complexes and they were inactive against Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Cadmium chloride complex of 1-furoyl-3-cyclohexylthiourea (CyTu) was prepared and characterized by elemental analysis, IR, and Raman spectroscopy. The structure of the complex was determined by single crystal X-ray methods (space group Bbab, a = 20.918(1), b = 23.532(1), c = 23.571(1) angstrom, = = , Z = 8). Each cadmium has distorted octahedral geometry, coordinated by two chlorides and the thiocarbonyl sulfurs from four CyTu molecules. All the spectroscopic data are consistent with coordination of CyTu by sulfur to cadmium.

Two porous mixed valent diruthenium(II,III)-dicarboxylate compounds have been prepared and characterized by spectroscopic methods, X-ray diffraction and thermogravimetry. Crystalline solids of [Ru(2)(tere)(2)Cl] center dot 3.5H(2)O (tere=terephthalate) and [Ru(2)(adip)(2)Cl] center dot 1.5H(2)O (adip=adipate) consist of extended chains in which polymeric layers of multiply metal-metal bonded [Ru(2)](5+) cores are bridged by dicarboxylate ligands in paddlewheel type geometries. Units of [Ru(2)(dicarboxylate)(2)](n)(+) are linked by axial bridging chloride ions generating three-dimensional networks. The polymers loose non-bonded water molecules at low temperatures but do not undergo thermal decomposition below 280-300 degrees C. Both of compounds exhibit high BET surface areas, [Ru(2)(tere)(2)Cl]: 235 m(2) g(-1) and [Ru(2)(adip)(2)Cl]: 281 m(2) g(-1), and occlude similar numbers of mol of N(2) per mol of metal. The terephthalate ligand generated an organized structure with supermicropores (total pore size of 0.24 cm(3) g(-1)) while the adipate ligand led to a mesoporous structure (total pore sizes of 0.47 cm(3) g(-1)) for the corresponding diruthenium(II,III)-dicarboxylate polymers. Canonical Monte Carlo simulations for the Au(210)/H(2)O interface, using a force field recently proposed by us, are reported. The results exhibit the main features normally observed in simulations of water molecules in contact with different noble metal surfaces. The calculations also assess the influence of the surface topography on the structural aspects of the adsorbed water and on the distribution of the water molecules in the direction normal to the metal surface plane. The adsorption process is preferential at sites in the first layer of the metal. The analysis of the density profiles and dipole moment distributions points to two predominant orientations. Most of the molecules are adsorbed with the molecular plane parallel to surface, while others adsorb with one of the O-H bonds parallel to the surface and the other bond pointing towards the bulk liquid phase. There is also evidence of hydrogen bond formation between the first and second solvent layers at the interface. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Cadmium (Cd) in air, drinking water and food has the potential to affect the health of people, mainly those who live in highly industrialized regions. Cd affects placental function, can cross the placental barrier and directly modify fetal development. Once the organism is particularly susceptible to the exposition to the Cd during the perinatal period, and that this metal can be excreted in the milk, the aim of the present work was to study the effects of the constant exposition to drinkable water containing low levels of Cd during the lactation, on the salivary glands of the rat. Female rats received ad libitum drinking water containing 300mg/l of CdCl2 throughout the whole lactation. Control animals received a similar volume of water without Cd. Lactant rats (21 day old) were killed by lethal dose of anesthetic. The salivary glands were separated, fixed in ""alfac"" solution for 24 h, and serially sectioned. The 6 mu m thick sections were stained with hematoxylin and eosin. Nuclear glandular parameters were estimated, as well as cytoplasm and cell volume, nucleus/cytoplasm ratio, number and surface density, diameters and cell thickness. Mean body weight was 34.86 g for the control group and 18.56 g for the Cd-treated group. Histologically, the glandular acini were significantly smaller, the gland ducts were similar in both groups studied. The connective tissue was more abundant. In conclusion, the salivary glands (submandibular, parotid and sublingual) showed retarded growth after Cd intoxication.

Ordered mesoporous silica with cubic structure, type FDU-1, was synthesized under strong acid media using B-50-6600 poly(ethylene oxide)-poly(butilene oxide)-poly(ethylene oxide) triblock copolymer (EO(39)BO(47)EO(39)) and tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS). Humic acid (HA) was modified to the synthesis process at a concentration of 1.5 mmol per gram of SiO(2). Thermogravimetry, small angle X-ray diffraction, nitrogen adsorption and high resolution transmission electron microscopy were used to characterize the samples. The pristine FDU-1 and FDU-1 with incorporated 1.5 mmol of HA were tested for adsorption of Pb(2+), Cu(2+) and Cd(2+) in aqueous solution. Incorporation of humic acid into the FDU-1 silica afforded an adsorbent with strong affinity for Cd(2+), Cu(2+) and Pb(2+) from single ion solutions. Adsorption of Cu(2+) was significantly enhanced after incorporation of humic acid, a fact that can be explained by the formation of complexes with carboxylic and phenolic groups at low concentrations of the metal cation. The results demonstrated the potential applicability of FDU-1 with incorporated HA in the removal of low concentrations of heavy metal cations from aqueous solution, such as wastewaters, after usual precipitation of metal hydroxides in alkaline medium and proper pH conditioning in the range between 6 and 7. (i) The electronic and structural properties of boron doped graphene sheets, and (ii) the chemisorption processes of hydrogen adatoms on the boron doped graphene sheets have been examined by ab initio total energy calculations. In (i) we find that the structural deformations are very localized around the boron substitutional sites, and in accordance with previous studies (Endo et al 2001 J. Appl. Phys. 90 5670) there is an increase of the electronic density of states near the Fermi level. Our simulated scanning tunneling microscope (STM) images, for occupied states, indicate the formation of bright (triangular) spots lying on the substitutional boron (center) and nearest-neighbor carbon (edge) sites. Those STM images are attributed to the increase of the density of states within an energy interval of 0.5 eV below the Fermi level. For a boron concentration of similar to 2.4%, we find that two boron atoms lying on the opposite sites of the same hexagonal ring (B1-B2 configuration) represents the energetically most stable configuration, which is in contrast with previous theoretical findings. Having determined the energetically most stable configuration for substitutional boron atoms on graphene sheets, we next considered the hydrogen adsorption process as a function of the boron concentration, (ii). Our calculated binding energies indicate that the C-H bonds are strengthened near boron substitutional sites. Indeed, the binding energy of hydrogen adatoms forming a dimer-like structure on the boron doped B1-B2 graphene sheet is higher than the binding energy of an isolated H(2) molecule. Since the formation of the H dimer-like structure may represent the initial stage of the hydrogen clustering process on graphene sheets, we can infer that the formation of H clusters is quite likely not only on clean graphene sheets, which is in consonance with previous studies (Hornekaer et al 2006 Phys. Rev. Lett. 97 186102), but also on B1-B2 boron doped graphene sheets. However, for a low concentration of boron atoms, the formation of H dimer structures is not expected to occur near a single substitutional boron site. That is, the formation (or not) of H clusters on graphene sheets can be tuned by the concentration of substitutional boron atoms.

Electrodeposition of bismuth on gold microelectrodes for determination of Pb(II) by square wave anodic stripping voltammetry (SWASV) was accomplished by an in situ procedure in alkaline solution. A linear calibration plot for Pb(II) in the concentration range 40 to 6700 nmol L(-1) (r=0.998) was obtained, the detection limit was found to be 12.5 nmol L(-1) (S/N = 3) and the relative standard deviation in Solutions containing 1 mu mol L(-1) Pb(II) was 4% (n = 12). The analytical performance of the proposed sensor wits tested by measuring the Pb(II) concentration in a wine sample. The result Was in good agreement with the one obtained by GFAAS.

The effect of CaCl(2), Ca(NO(3))(2), CaSO(4), CaCO(3) and Ca(3)(PO(4))(2) on the flow behavior of xanthan gum solutions was investigated. Regardless the concentration and type of calcium salt used, xanthan solutions presented pseudoplastic behavior. The soluble salts (CaCl(2) and Ca(NO(3))(2)) induced the disordered state in the xanthan chains at concentration of 1.0 g/L or 10 g/L, decreasing the flow consistency index (K) values. At 100 g/L soluble salts K values were similar to those found for pure xanthan solutions, whereas at the same concentration of insoluble particles the K values increased 20%. The adsorption of xanthan gum onto Si/SiO(2) surfaces in the presence of calcium salts was investigated by ellipsometry and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The adsorbed layer of xanthan onto Si/SiO(2) consisted of two regions: (i) a thin acid resistant sublayer, where xanthan chains were like highly entangled fibers and (ii) a thick upperlayer, whose morphology was calcium salt dependent. The development and application of a functionalized carbon nanotubes paste electrode (CNPE) modified with crosslinked chitosan for determination of Cu(II) in industrial wastewater, natural water and human urine samples by linear scan anodic stripping voltammetry (LSASV) are described. Different electrodes were constructed using chitosan and chitosan crosslinked with glutaraldehyde (CTS-GA) and epichlorohydrin (CTS-ECH). The best voltammetric response for Cu(II) was obtained with a paste composition of 65% (m/m) of functionalized carbon nanotubes, 15% (m/m) of CTS-ECH, and 20% (m/m) of mineral oil using a solution of 0.05 mol L(-1) KNO(3) with pH adjusted to 2.25 with HNO(3), an accumulation potential of 0.3V vs. Ag/AgCl (3.0 mol L(-1) KCl) for 300 s and a scan rate of 100 mV s(-1). Under these optimal experimental conditions, the voltammetric response was linearly dependent on the Cu(II) concentration in the range from 7.90 x 10(-8) to 1.60 x 10(-5) mol L(-1) with a detection limit of 1.00 x 10(-8) mol L(-1). The samples analyses were evaluated using the proposed sensor and a good recovery of Cu(II) was obtained with results in the range from 98.0% to 104%. The analysis of industrial wastewater, natural water and human urine samples obtained using the proposed CNPE modified with CTS-ECH electrode and those obtained using a comparative method are in agreement at the 95% confidence level. This paper describes the preparation of new adsorbents derived from sugarcane bagasse and wood sawdust (Manilkara sp.) to remove zinc (II) ions from electroplating wastewater. The first part deals with the chemical modification of sugarcane bagasse and wood sawdust, using succinic anhydride to introduce carboxylic acid functions into the material. The obtained materials (modified sugarcane bagasse MB2 and modified wood sawdust MS2) were then characterized by infrared spectroscopy (IR) and used in adsorption experiments. The adsorption experiments evaluates Zn(2+) removal from aqueous single metal solution and real electroplating wastewater on both batch and continuous experiments using fixed-bed columns prepared in laboratorial scale with the obtained adsorbents. Adsorption isotherms were then developed using Langmuir model and the Thomas kinetic model. The calculated Zn(2+) adsorption capacities were found to be 145 mg/g for MS2 and 125 mg/g for MB2 in single metal aqueous solution, whereas for the industrial wastewater these values were 61 mg/g for MS2 and 55 mg/g for MB2.
