The crystal Structures of heptamethylenediammonium bis(saccharinate) monohydrate, [H(3)N-(CH(2))(7)-NH(3)](sac)(2)center dot H(2)O (1) 0 (1) and octamethylenediammonium bis(saccharinate) hemihydrate, [H(3)N-(CH(2))(8)-NH(3)](sac)(2)center dot 0.5H(2)O (2), were determined-by single-crystal X-ray diffraction methods. Compound I crystallizes in the triclinic space group P (1) over bar with 2 molecules per unit cell, and 2 in the monoclinic space group P2(1)/a with Z = 4. The saccharinate moiety is planar in both compounds presenting bonding characteristics comparable to those found in other saccharinate salts. The ionic crystals are further stabilized by an extensive H-bonding network, which links the anions and cations into an infinite three-dimensional Supramolecular assembly. The FTIR spectra of the adducts are briefly discussed in comparison with those of the constituent Molecules.

We report on the photophysical properties of single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) suspensions In toluene solutions of poly[9,9-dioctylfluorenyl-2,7-diyl](PFO). Steady-state and time-resolved photoluminescence spectroscopy in the near-infrared and visible spectral regions are used to study the interaction of the dispersed SWNTs with the wrapped polymer. Molecular dynamics simulations of the PFO-SWNT hybrids in toluene were carried out to evaluate the energetics of different wrapping geometries. The simulated fluorescence spectra in the visible region were obtained by the quantum chemical ZINDO-CI method, using a sampling of structures obtained from the dynamics trajectories. The tested schemes consider polymer chains aligned along the nanotube axis, where chirality has a minimal effect, or forming helical structures, where a preference for high chiral angles is evidenced. Moreover, toluene affects the polymer structure favoring the helical conformation. Simulations show that the most stable hybrid system is the PFO-wrapped (8,6) nanotube, in agreement with the experimentally observed selectivity.

Three novel polymetallic ruthenium (III) meso-tetra(4-pyridyl)porphyrins containing peripheral ""RuCl(3)(dppb)"" moieties have been prepared and characterized. The X-ray structure of the tetraruthenated {NiTPyP[RuCl(3)(dppb)](4)} porphyrin complex crystallizes in the triclinic space group FT. This structure is discussed and compared with the crystal data for the mer-[RuCl(3)(dppb)(py)]. The {TPyP[RuCl(3)(dppb)](4)} and {CoTPyP[RuCl(3)(dppb)](4)} porphyrins were used to obtain electrogenerated films on ITO and glass carbon electrode surfaces, respectively. Such tetraruthenated porphyrins form films of a mixed-valence species {TPyP[Ru(dppb)](4)(mu Cl(3))(2)}(2)(4n2+) and {CoTPyP[Ru(dppb)](4)(mu Cl(3))(2)}(2n)(4n2+) on the electrode surface. The modified electrode with {CoTPyP[RuCl(3)(dppb)](4)} is very stable and can be used to detect organic substrates such as catechol.

This article presents an investigation of the temperature induced modification in the microstructure and dynamics of poly[2-methoxy-5-(2`-ethylhexyloxy)-1,4-phenylenevinylene] (MEH-PPV) cast films using Wide-Angle X-ray Scattering (WAXS), solid-state Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), and Fluorescence Spectroscopy (PL). MEH-PPV chain motions were characterized as a function of temperature by NMR. The results indicated that the solvent used to cast the films influences the activation energy of the side-chain motions. This was concluded from the comparison of the activation energy of the toluene cast film, E(a) = (54 +/- 8) kJ/mol, and chloroform cast film, E(a) = (69 +/- 5) kJ/mol, and could be attributed to the higher side-chain packing provided by chloroform, that preferentially solvates the side chain in contrast to toluene that solvates mainly the backbone. Concerning the backbone mobility, it was observed that the torsional motions in the MEH-PPV have average amplitude of similar to 10 degrees at 300 K, which was found to be independent of the solvent used to cast the films. In order to correlate the molecular dynamics processes with the changes in the microstructure of the polymer, in situ WAXS experiments as a function of temperature were performed and revealed that the interchain spacing in the MEH-PPV molecular aggregates increases as a function of temperature, particularly at temperatures where molecular relaxations occur. It was also observed that the WAXS peak associated with the bilayer spacing becomes narrower and its intensity increases whereas the peak associated with the inter-backbone planes reduces its intensity for higher temperatures. This last result Could be interpreted as a decrease in the number of aggregates and the reduction of the interchain species during the MEH-PPV relaxation processes. These WAXS results were correlated with PL spectra modifications observed upon temperature treatments. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

New Pd(II) and Pt(II) complexes [ML2] (HL = a substituted 2,5-dihydro-5-oxo-1H-pyrazolone-1-carbothioamide) have been synthesized by reacting K2MCl4 (M = Pd, Pt) or Pd(OAc)(2) with beta-ketoester thiosemicarbazones. The structures of seven of these complexes were determined by X-ray diffraction. Although all exhibit a distorted square-planar coordination with trans- or (in one case) cis-[MN2S2] kernels, their supramolecular arrangements vary widely from isolated molecules to 3D-networks. The in vitro antitumoral assays performed with two HL ligands and their metal complexes showed significant cytostatic activity for the latter, with the most active [ML2] derivative (a palladium complex) being about sixteen times more active than cis-DDP against the cis-platinum-resistant cell line A2780cisR. Toluquinone-cyclopentadiene Diels-Alder epoxide adducts react with sulfur and oxygen nucleophiles under heterogeneous conditions, leading to products resulting from the epoxide ring opening and from skeletal rearrangement, respectively. Pyrolysis of the sulfanyl adducts gave the new 3-sulfanyltoluquinones (1).

A novel Schiff base-copper(II) complex [Cu(2)L(2)(N(3))(2)](ClO(4))(2) 1, where L = (4-imidazolyl)ethylene-2-amino-1-ethylpyridine (apyhist), containing azide-bridges between adjacent copper ions in a dinuclear arrangement was isolated and characterized both in the solid state and in solution by X-ray crystallography and different spectroscopic techniques. Azide binding constants were estimated from titrations of the precursor [CuL(H(2)O)(2)](2+) solutions with sodium azide, giving rise to the azido-bridged species, [Cu(2)L(2)(N(3))(2)](2+). Raman spectra showed asymmetric stretching band at 2060 cm(-1), indicating the presence of azido ligands with a symmetric mu(1,) (1) binding geometry. EPA spectra, in frozen methanol/water solutions at 77 K, exhibited characteristic features of copper centers in tetragonal pyramidal coordination geometry, exhibiting magnetic interactions between them. Further, in solid state, two different values for magnetic coupling in this species were obtained, J/k = -(5.14 +/- 0.02) cm(-1) attributed to the mu(1, 1) azide-bridge mode, and J`z`/k = -(2.94 +/- 0.11) cm(-1) for the interaction between dinuclear moieties via water/perchorate bridges. Finally, an attempt was made to correlate structure and magnetic data for this dinuclear asymmetric end-on azido bridged-copper(II) 1 complex with those of another correlated dinuclear system, complex [Cu(2)L(2)Cl(2)](ClO(4))(2) 2, containing the same tridentate diimine ligand, but with chloro-bridged groups between the copper centres.

A new compact system encompassing in flow gas diffusion unit and a wall-jet amperometric FIA detector, coated with a supramolecular porphyrin film, was specially designed as an alternative to the time-consuming Monier-Williams method, allowing fast, reproducible and accurate analyses of free sulphite species in fruit juices. In fact, a linear response between 0.64 and 6.4 ppm of sodium sulphite. LOD = 0.043 ppm, relative standard deviation of +/- 1.5% (n = 10) and analytical frequency of 85 analyses/h were obtained utilising optimised conditions. That superior analytical performance allows the precise evaluation of the amount of free sulphite present in foods, providing an important comparison between the standard addition and the standard injection methods. Although the first one is most frequently used, it was strongly influenced by matrix effects because of the unexpected reactivity of sulphite ions with the juice matrixes, leading to its partial consumption soon after addition. In contrast, the last method was not susceptible to matrix effects yielding accurate results, being more reliable for analytical purposes. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The heteroaggregation behavior between a new class of nonplanar cationic beta-octabrominated meso-alkylpyridinium zinc(II)-porphyrins (beta-Br(8)(ZnP)) and anionic tetrasulfonated metallophthalocyanines (MTSPc, M = Ni(II) and Cu(II)) has been studied by UV-Vis electronic spectroscopy, in dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) solution. The heteroaggregate stoichiometry and the association constants were determined by means of Job plots. Dimers and unexpected trimers, taking into account the existence of axially coordinated DMSO molecules to the central metal in both beta-Br(8)(ZnP) and MTSPc complexes, are formed in solution. The spectroscopic properties of the heteroaggregates are markedly different from those observed in the correspondent planar cationic derivatives, the heteroaggregates showing major changes predominantly in the beta-Br(8)(ZnP) Soret band region and minor effects in the MTSPc Q bands. The observed changes in the Soret band region (red/blue shifts, decrease in the absorption intensities) depend on the nature of the alkyl substituent attached to the meso-pyridinium group. The greater versatility of the nonplanar porphyrins accommodating the meso-substituents in out-of-plane and in-plane conformations is proposed to explain the observed stoichiometries and the differences on the heteroaggregates spectroscopic properties for each beta-Br(8)(ZnP) compound. The likely conformations assumed by the meso-substituents in these beta-Br(8)(ZnP) compounds and its spectroscopic characteristics are in accordance with the participation of the substituents as the main factor on the extent of the observed red-shifted spectra in nonplanar porphyrins. The obtained association constants (K(IP)) for the dimers and trimers are lower than those previously found for the similar planar cationic porphyrin systems, due to the lack of extensive pi-pi interactions and to the less effective approximation between the ionic groups, resulting in loosened heteroaggregates, particularly for the trimeric systems. Furthermore, the experimental results suggest that the NiTSPc is more distorted in DMSO solution than the CuTSPc derivative, favoring the interaction with the nonplanar beta-Br(8)(ZnP) compounds. A systematic and comprehensive study of the interaction of citrate-stabilized gold nanoparticles with triruthenium cluster complexes of general formula [Ru(3)(CH(3)COO)(6)(L)](+) [L = 4-cyanopyridine (4-CNpy), 4,4`-bipyridine (4,4`-bpy) or 4,4`-bis(pyridyl)ethylene (bpe)] has been carried out. The cluster-nanoparticle interaction in solution and the construction of thin films of the hybrid materials were investigated in detail by electronic and surface plasmon resonance (SPR) spectroscopy, Raman scattering spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Citrate-stabilized gold nanoparticles readily interacted with [Ru(3)O(CH(3)COO)(6)(L)(3)](+) complexes to generate functionalized nanoparticles that tend to aggregate according to rates and extents that depend on the bond strength defined by the characteristics of the cluster L ligands following the sequence bpe > 4,4`-bpy >> 4-CNpy. The formation of compact thin films of hybrid AuNP/[Ru(3)O(CH(3)COO)(6)(L)(3)](+) derivatives with L = bpe and 4,4`-bpy indicated that the stability/lability of AuNP-cluster bonds as well as their solubility are important parameters that influence the film contruction process. Fluorine-doped tin oxide electrodes modified with thin films of these nanomaterials exhibited similar electrocatalytic activity but much higher sensitivity than a conventional gold electrode in the oxidation of nitrite ion to nitrate depending on the bridging cluster complex, demonstrating the high potential for the development of amperometric sensors.

Hydroquinone (HQ) is an environmental contaminant which causes immune toxicity. In this study, the effects of exposure to low doses of HQ on neutrophil mobilization into the LPS-inflamed lung were investigated. Male Swiss mice were exposed to aerosolized vehicle (control) or 12.5, 25 or 50 ppm HQ (1 h/day for 5 days). One hour later, oxidative burst, cell cycle. DNA fragmentation and adhesion molecules expressions in circulating neutrophils were determined by flow cytometry, and plasma malondialdehyde (MDA) levels were measured by HPLC. Also, 1 h later the last exposures, inflammation was induced by LPS inhalation (0.1 mg/ml/10 min) and 3 h later, the numbers of leukocytes in peripheral blood and in the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) were determined using a Neubauer chamber and stained smears; adhesion molecules expressed on lung microvessel endothelial cells were quantified by immunohistochemistry; myeloperoxidase (MPO) activity was measured in the lung tissue by colorimetric assay; and cytokines in the BALF were determined by ELISA. In vivo HQ exposure augmented plasma MDA levels and oxidative activity of neutrophils, but did not cause alterations in cell cycle and DNA fragmentation. Under these conditions, the number of circulating leukocytes was not altered, but HQ exposure reduced LPS-induced neutrophil migration into the alveolar space, as these cells remained in the lung tissue. The impaired neutrophil migration into BALF may not be dependent on reduced cytokines secretions in the BALF and lung endothelial adhesion molecules expressions. However, HQ exposure increased the expression of beta(2) and beta(3) integrins and platelet-endothelial cell adhesion molecule-1 (PECAM-1) in neutrophils, which were not further enhanced by fMLP in vitro stimulation, indicating that HQ exposure activates circulating neutrophils, impairing further stimulatory responses. Therefore, it has been shown, for the first time, that neutrophils are target of lower levels of in vivo HQ exposure, which may be considered in host defense in infectious diseases. Doxorubicin (DOX), a member of the anthracycline group, is a widely used drug in cancer therapy. The mechanisms of DOX action include topoisomerase II-poisoning, free radical release, DNA adducts and interstrand cross-link (ICL) formation. Nucleotide excision repair(NER) is involved in the removal of helix-distorting lesions and chemical adducts, however, little is known about the response of NER-deficient cell lines to anti-tumoral drugs like DOX. Wild type and XPD-mutated cells, harbouring mutations in different regions of this gene and leading to XP-D, XP/CS or TTD diseases, were treated with this drug and analyzed for cell cycle arrest and DNA damage by comet assay. The formation of DSBs was also investigated by determination of gamma H2AX foci. Our results indicate that all three NER-deficient cell lines tested are more sensitive to DOX treatment, when compared to wild type cells or XP cells complemented by the wild type XPD cDNA, suggesting that NER is involved in the removal of DOX-induced lesions. The cell cycle analysis showed the characteristic G2 arrest in repair-proficient MRC5 cell line after DOX treatment, whereas the repair-deficient cell lines presented significant increase in sub-G1 fraction. The NER-deficient cell lines do not show different patterns of DNA damage formation as assayed by comet assay and phosphorylated H2AX foci formation. Knock-down of topoisomerase II alpha with siRNA leads to increased survival in both MRC5 and XP cells, however, XP cell line still remained significantly more sensitive to the treatment by DOX. Our study suggests that the enhanced sensitivity is due to DOX-induced DNA damage that is subject to NER, as we observed decreased unscheduled DNA synthesis in XP-deficient cells upon DOX treatment. Furthermore, the complementation of the XPD-function abolished the observed sensitivity at lower DOX concentrations, suggesting that the XPD helicase activity is involved in the repair of DOX-induced lesions. The paper by Yu and Saupe on the first biaxial nematic phase created excitement for a number of reasons. Some theories of biaxial phases already existed, but experimental observation was still lacking. The phase was discovered in a lyotropic system with three components, which in theory is difficult. Lyotropic liquid crystals are composed of supramolecular assemblies of amphiphilic molecules, which may change shape and size as a function of concentration and temperature. The experimental phase diagram of the lyotropic biaxial phase was rather complex, with the biaxial region inserted between nematic cylindrical and nematic discotic phases via second-order transitions. In addition, re-entrant behaviour was evident. Saupe investigated further systems experimentally, observing that the biaxial phase might be absent in cases where a direct transition between the cylindrical and discotic phases occurred. He provided a range of theoretical and experimental contributions on the properties of these lyotropics, but was very cautious regarding the detailed amphiphilic assemblies involved. The present paper reviews this area, focusing on proposals for the structure of the micellar assemblies. Emphasis is placed on recent papers which indicate a transformation of the two uniaxial shapes, in mixing conditions, both from the theoretical and the experimental point of view, and to questions still requiring further study.

We focus this work on the theoretical investigation of the block-copolymer poly [oxyoctyleneoxy-(2,6-dimethoxy-1,4phenylene-1,2-ethinylene-phenanthrene-2,4diyl) named as LaPPS19, recently proposed for optoelectronic applications. We used for that a variety of methods, from molecular mechanics to quantum semiempirical techniques (AMI, ZINDO/S-CIS). Our results show that as expected isolated LaPPS19 chains present relevant electron localization over the phenanthrene group. We found, however, that LaPPS19 could assemble in a pi-stacked form, leading to impressive interchain interaction; the stacking induces electronic delocalization between neighbor chains and introduces new states below the phenanthrene-related absorption; these results allowed us to associate the red-shift of the absorption edge, seen in the experimental results, to spontaneous pi-stack aggregation of the chains. The disclosure of magnetic ionic liquids (MILs) as stable dispersions of surface modified gamma-Fe(2)O(3) or CoFe(2)O(4) nanoparticles (NPs) in the 1-n-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate (BMIBF(4)) ionic liquid is reported. The magnetic NPs were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and Raman spectroscopy. The surface modified NPs have proved to form stable dispersions in BMIBF(4) in the absence of water and behave like a magnetic ionic liquid. The MILs have been characterized by Raman spectroscopy, magnetic measurements, and DSC. The stability of the magnetic NPs in BMIBF(4) is consistently explained by assuming the formation of a semiorganized protective layer composed of supramolecular aggregates in the form of [(BMI)(2)(BF(4))(3)](-). A superparamagnetic behavior and saturation magnetization of ca. 18 emu/g for a sample containing 30% w/w maghemite NPs/BMIBF(4) have been inferred from static and dynamic magnetic measurements. DSC results have shown that the MIL composed of 30% w/w CoFe(2)O(4) NPs/BMIBF(4) remains a liquid phase down to -84 degrees C.
