The magnetic structures of the title compounds have been studied by neutron diffraction. In contrast to the isomorphous RNi(2)B(2)C compounds, wherein a variety of exotic incommensurate modulated structures has been observed, the magnetic structure of ErCo(2)B(2)C is found to be a collinear antiferromagnet with k = (12, 0, 12) while those of HoCo(2)B(2)C and DyCo(2)B(2)C are observed to be simple ferromagnets. For all studied compounds, the moments are found to be confined within the basal plane and their magnitudes are comparable to the values obtained from the low-temperature isothermal magnetization measurements. The absence of modulated magnetic structures in the RCo(2)B(2)C series (for ErCo(2)B(2)C, verified down to 50 mK) is attributed to the quenching of the Fermi surface nesting features.

A new quaternary intermetallic borocarbide TmCo(2)B(2)C has been synthesized via rapid-quench of an arc-melted ingot. Elemental and powder-diffraction analyses established its correct stoichiometry and single-phase character. The crystal structure is isomorphous with that of TmNi(2)B(2)C (I4/mmm) and is stable over the studied temperature range. Above 7 K, the paramagnetic state follows modified Curie-Weiss behavior (chi = C/(T - theta) + chi(0)) wherein chi(0) = 0.008(1) emu mol(-1) with the temperature-dependent term reflecting the paramagnetism of the Tm subsystem: mu(eff) = 7.6(2) mu(B) (in agreement with the expected value for a free Tm(3+) ion) and theta = -4.5(3) K. Long-range ferromagnetic order of the Tm sublattice is observed to develop around similar to 1 K. No superconductivity is detected in TmCo(2)B(2)C down to 20 mK, a feature which is consistent with the general trend in the RCo(2)B(2)C series. Finally, the influence of the rapid-quench process on the magnetism (and superconductivity) of TmNi(2)B(2)C will be discussed and compared to that of TmCo(2)B(2)C.

In this work, we report on the magnetic properties of nickel nanoparticles (NP) in a SiO(2)-C thin film matrix, prepared by a polymeric precursor method, with Ni content x in the 0-10 wt% range. Microstructural analyses of the films showed that the Ni NP are homogenously distributed in the SiO(2)-C matrix and have spherical shape with average diameter of similar to 10 nm. The magnetic properties reveal features of superparamagnetism with blocking temperatures T (B) similar to 10 K. The average diameter of the Ni NP, estimated from magnetization measurements, was found to be similar to 4 nm for the x = 3 wt% Ni sample, in excellent agreement with X-ray diffraction data. M versus H hysteresis loops indicated that the Ni NP are free from a surrounding oxide layer. We have also observed that coercivity (H (C)) develops appreciably below T (B), and follows the H (C) ae [1 - (T/T (B))(0.5)] relationship, a feature expected for randomly oriented and non-interacting nanoparticles. The extrapolation of H (C) to 0 K indicates that coercivity decreases with increasing x, suggesting that dipolar interactions may be relevant in films with x > 3 wt% Ni.

This paper presents a study of the electrocatalysis of ethanol oxidation reactions in an acidic medium on Pt-CeO(2)/C (20 wt.% of Pt-CeO(2) on carbon XC-72R), prepared in different mass ratios by the polymeric precursor method. The mass ratios between Pt and CeO(2) (3:1, 2:1, 1:1, 1:2, 1:3) were confirmed by Energy Dispersive X-ray Analysis (EDAX). X-ray diffraction (XRD) structural characterization data shows that the Pt-CeO(2)/C catalysts are composed of nanosized polycrystalline non-alloyed deposits, from which reflections corresponding to the fcc (Pt) and fluorite (CeO(2)) structures were clearly observed. The mean crystallite sizes calculated from XRD data revealed that, independent of the mass ratio, a value close to 3 nm was obtained for the CeO(2) particles. For Pt, the mean crystallite sizes were dependent on the ratio of this metal in the catalysts. Low platinum ratios resulted in small crystallites. and high Pt proportions resulted in larger crystallites. The size distributions of the catalysts particles, determined by XRD, were confirmed by Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM) imaging. Cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometic experiments were used to evaluate the electrocatalytic performance of the different materials. In all cases, except Pt-CeO(2)/C 1:1, the Pt-Ceo(2)/C catalysts exhibited improved performance when compared with Pt/C. The best result was obtained for the Pt-CeO(2)/C 1:3 catalyst, which gave better results than the Pt-Ru/C (Etek) catalyst. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Little data are available on the seroprevalence of, and risk factors for hepatitis B and C viruses (HBV and HCV) infection in Latin American countries. A multi-center serosurvey was conducted among 3,598 first-time blood donors (65% men) from Sao Paulo, Salvador and Manaus in Brazil. The gender-specific seroprevalences of antibodies against hepatitis B core antigen (anti-HBc) and of the hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) in anti-HBc-positive sera were measured, and risk factors analyzed by gender. The gender-specific seroprevalences of antibodies against HCV (anti-HCV) were measured, but risk factors for HCV were not determined. Anti-HBc and HBsAg seroprevalences were not significantly different in men [101/2,341 (4.31%) and 4/2,229 (0.18%), respectively] and women [65/1,237 (5.25%) and 8/ 1,169 (0.68%), respectively], whereas the seroprevalence of anti-HCV was higher in women (12/1,238 [0.97%] vs. 9/2,353 [0.38%]; odds ratio [OR] = 2.49; 95% confidence interval [Cl]: 1.0-6.0). No significant difference for HBV infection was found across the three study sites or by ethnic group. The seroprevalence of anti-HBc increased with age, but decreased with education level in both genders. Lifetime number of sexual partners was associated with anti-HBc prevalence among men (OR = 1.95; 95% Cl: 1.2-3.1), but not women. The seroprevalence of HBV and HCV was low among Brazilian blood donors, and exposure increased with age in both genders.

PtSn/CeO(2)-C electrocatalyst was prepared in a single step by an alcohol-reduction process using ethylene glycol as solvent and reducing agent and CeO(2) (15 wt%) and Vulcan XC72 (85 wt%) as supports. The performance for ethanol oxidation was investigated by cyclic voltammetry and in situ FTIR spectroscopy. The electrocatalytic activity of the PtSn/CeO(2)-C electrocatalyst was higher than that of the PtSn/C electrocatalyst. FTIR studies for ethanol oxidation on PtSn/C electrocatalyst showed that acetaldehyde and acetic acid were the principal products formed, while on PtSn/CeO(2)-C electrocatalyst the principal products formed were CO(2) and acetic acid.

We classify up to isomorphism the spaces of compact operators K(E, F), where E and F are Banach spaces of all continuous functions defined on the compact spaces 2(m) circle plus [0, alpha], the topological sum of Cantor cubes 2(m) and the intervals of ordinal numbers [0, alpha]. More precisely, we prove that if 2(m) and aleph(gamma) are not real-valued measurable cardinals and n >= aleph(0) is not sequential cardinal, then for every ordinals xi, eta, lambda and mu with xi >= omega(1), eta >= omega(1), lambda = mu < omega or lambda, mu is an element of [omega(gamma), omega(gamma+1)[, the following statements are equivalent: (a) K(C(2(m) circle plus [0, lambda]), C(2(n) circle plus [0, xi])) and K(C(2(m) circle plus [0, mu]), C(2(n) circle plus [0, eta]) are isomorphic. (b) Either C([0, xi]) is isomorphic to C([0, eta] or C([0, xi]) is isomorphic to C([0, alpha p]) and C([0, eta]) is isomorphic to C([0,alpha q]) for some regular cardinal alpha and finite ordinals p not equal q. Thus, it is relatively consistent with ZFC that this result furnishes a complete isomorphic classification of these spaces of compact operators. (C) 2010 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

The Eag1 and Eag2, voltage-dependent potassium channels, and the small-conductance calcium-activated potassium channel (Kcnn3) are highly expressed in limbic regions of the brain, where their function is still unknown. Eag1 co-localizes with tyrosine hydroxilase enzyme in the substantia nigra and ventral tegmental area. Kcnn3 deficiency leads to enhanced serotonergic and dopaminergic neurotransmission accompanied by distinct alterations in emotional behaviors. As exposure to stress is able to change the expression and function of several ion channels, suggesting that they might be involved in the consequences of stress, we aimed at investigating Eag 1, Eag2 and Kcnn3 mRNA expression in the brains of rats submitted to isolation rearing. As the long-lasting alterations in emotional and behavioral regulation after stress have been related to changes in serotonergic neurotransmission, expressions of serotonin Htr1a and Htr2a receptors in male Wistar rats` brain were also investigated. Rats were reared in isolation or in groups of five for nine weeks after weaning. Isolated and socially reared rats were tested for exploratory activity in the open field test for 5 min and brains were processed for reverse-transcription coupled to quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR). Isolated reared rats showed decreased exploratory activity in the open field. Compared to socially reared rats, isolated rats showed reduced Htr2a mRNA expression in the striatum and brainstem and reduced Eag2 mRNA expression in all examined regions except cerebellum. To our knowledge, this is the first work to show that isolation rearing can change Eag2 gene expression in the brain. The involvement of this channel in stress-related behaviors is discussed.

CaNb(2)O(6) single crystal fibers were grown by the laser-heated pedestal growth technique, directly from the starting reagents. Optically transparent fibers were obtained in the form of rods with elliptical cross-section, free from cracks, impurities, and secondary phases, with an average diameter of 0.4 mm and about 20 mm of length. The fibers grew within the orthorhombic Pbcn columbite structure, with the growth axis nearly parallel to the crystallographic a-direction. The parameters b and c were parallel to the shorter and larger ellipsis axes. A special setup using a microscope was developed to obtain the far-infrared reflectivity spectra of these micrometer-sized fibers, allowing the identification and assignment of 34 of the 38 polar phonons foreseen for the material. From these phonons, the intrinsic dielectric constant ( of 185 THz) could be estimated, showing the potential of the material for applications in microwave circuitry. These results, along with previous polarized Raman data (Cryst. Growth Des. 2010, 10, 1569), allow us to present a comprehensive set of optical phonon modes and to discuss the potential use of designed CaNb(2)O(6) microcrystals in compact optical devices.

This paper presents the structural characterization of the indan derivative (+/-)-1-trans-3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-2,3-dihydro-1H-indene-1-carboxamide, which was unambiguously determined by X-ray diffraction (XRD) to be a racemate (R/S: 50/50) crystallizing in an achiral crystal structure (P2(1)/c, a = 9.3180(1) , b = 7.9070(2) , c = 19.7550(4) , beta = 103.250(1)A degrees, V = 1416.75(5) (3) and Z = 4). The diastereomers are related by the inversion symmetry and linked by H bond forming a dimer. The crystal packing is stabilized by hydrogen bonds, including the classical one responsible for the formation of centrosymmetric dimers, and non-classical ones involving C-H center dot center dot center dot O and C-H center dot center dot center dot pi-aryl interactions. The intra and intermolecular geometry of the title compound is compared to the (+/-)-1-trans-3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-2,3-dihydro-1H-indene-1-carboxylic acid one, which also present an achiral crystal structure from racemates (R/S: 50/50). The two indan derivatives crystallize in a very similar unit cell.

The synthesis, an improved refined crystal and molecular structure re-determination, and the thermal decomposition behavior of two Zn(II) derivatives of isocinchomeronic acid (2,5-pyridinedicarboxylic acid or H(2)2,5-pydc) are presented. [Zn(2,5-pydc)(H(2)O)(3)Zn(2,5-pydc)(H(2)O)(2)](2) (1) crystallizes in the triclinic P-1 space group with a = 7.106(2), b = 11.450(2), c = 11.869(1) angstrom, alpha = 107.29(1), beta = 104.08(1), gamma = 90.32(2)degrees, and Z = 2. [Zn(2,5-pydc)(H(2)O)(2)] center dot H(2)O (2) is orthorhombic (P2(1)2(1)2(1) space group), with a = 7.342(1), b = 9.430(1), c = 13.834(2) angstrom, and Z = 4. The structures were refined to agreement R(1)-factors of 0.0315 (1) and 0.0336 (2). Complex (1) is arranged as molecular Zn(4)(2,5-pydc)(4)(H(2)O)(10) tetramers, the cages of which define channels that remain unblocked by anions. Compound (2) is polymeric with Zn(2,5-pydc)(H(2)O)(2) and Zn(2,5-pydc)(H(2)O)(3) units linked through bridging ligands. Both compounds were synthesized under mild conditions in aqueous media, without need to resort to hydrothermal media. Changing the pH from 4.51 to 5.75 suffices to direct the chemical processes toward the orthorhombic compound rather than to the triclinic one.

We study properties of self-iterating Lie algebras in positive characteristic. Let R = K[t(i)vertical bar i is an element of N]/(t(i)(p)vertical bar i is an element of N) be the truncated polynomial ring. Let partial derivative(i) = partial derivative/partial derivative t(i), i is an element of N, denote the respective derivations. Consider the operators v(1) = partial derivative(1) + t(0)(partial derivative(2) + t(1)(partial derivative(3) + t(2)(partial derivative(4) + t(3)(partial derivative(5) + t(4)(partial derivative(6) + ...))))); v(2) = partial derivative(2) + t(1)(partial derivative(3) + t(2)(partial derivative(4) + t(3)(partial derivative(5) + t(4)(partial derivative(6) + ...)))). Let L = Lie(p)(v(1), v(2)) subset of Der R be the restricted Lie algebra generated by these derivations. We establish the following properties of this algebra in case p = 2, 3. a) L has a polynomial growth with Gelfand-Kirillov dimension lnp/ln((1+root 5)/2). b) the associative envelope A = Alg(v(1), v(2)) of L has Gelfand-Kirillov dimension 2 lnp/ln((1+root 5)/2). c) L has a nil-p-mapping. d) L, A and the augmentation ideal of the restricted enveloping algebra u = u(0)(L) are direct sums of two locally nilpotent subalgebras. The question whether u is a nil-algebra remains open. e) the restricted enveloping algebra u(L) is of intermediate growth. These properties resemble those of Grigorchuk and Gupta-Sidki groups.

The analysis of the IR carbonyl band of the N,N-diethyl-2-[(4`-substituted)phenylsulfonyl]acetamides Et(2)NC(O)CH(2)S(O)(2)-C(6)H(4)-Y (Y = OMe 1, Me 2,1-13, Cl 4, Br 5, NO(2) 6) supported by B3LYP/6-31G(d,p) calculations for 3, indicated the existence of three pairs (anti and syn) of cis (c) and gauche (g(1) and g(2)) conformers in the gas phase, being the gauche conformers significantly more stable than the cis ones. The anti geometry is more stable than the syn one, for each pair of cis and gauche conformers. The summing up of the orbital (NBO analysis) and electrostatic interactions justifies quite well the populations and the v(CO) frequencies of the anti and syn pairs of c, g(1) and g(2) conformers. The IR higher carbonyl frequency component whose population is ca. 10%, in CCl(4), may be ascribed to the least stable and most polar cis conformer pair (in the gas phase) and the lower frequency component whose population is ca. 90%, to the summing up of the populations of the two most stable and least polar gauche conformer pairs (g(1) and g(2)) (in the gas phase). The reversal of the cis(c)/gauche (g(1) + g(2)) population ratio observed in chloroform ca. 60% (cis)/40% (gauche) and the occurrence of the most polar cis(c) conformer only, in acetonitrile, strongly suggests the coalescence of the two gauche components in a unique carbonyl band in solution. A further support to this rationalization is given by the single point PCM solvation model performed by HF/6-31G(d,p) method, which showed a progressive increase of the c/(g(1) + g(2)) ratio going from gas to CCl(4), to CHCl(3) and to CH(3)CN. X-ray single crystal analysis of 4 indicates that this compound assumes, in the solid state, the syn-clinal (gauche) conformation with respect to the [O=C-CH(2)-S] moiety, and the most stable anti geometry relative to the [C(O)N(CH(2)CH(3))(2)] fragment. In order to obtain larger energy gain from the crystal packing the molecules of 4 are linked in centrosymmetric dimers through two C-H center dot center dot center dot O interactions (C-H([O-Ph])center dot center dot center dot O([SO2])) forming a step ladder. The analysis of the IR carbonyl band of the 2-substituted N-methoxy-N-methylacetamides Y-CH(2)C(O)-N(OMe)Me (Y = F1, OMe 2, OPh 3, Cl 4), supported by B3LYP/6-311++G(3df, 3pd) calculations along with the NBO analysis for 1-4, indicated the existence of cis-gauche conformers i.e. (c) and (g) for 1 and 3, (c(1), c(2)) and (g(1), g(2)) for 2, and (c) and (g(1), g(2)) for 4. In the gas phase, the g conformer population prevails over the c one, for 1 and 3, the (c(1) + c(2)) population prevails over the (g(1) + g(2)) one for 2, and the (g(1) + g(2)) conformer population is more abundant than (c) one for 4. In n-hexane solution, the cis conformer is more abundant for 1-3. The occurrence of Fermi resonance in the nu(CO) region, in n-hexane, precludes the estimative of relative populations of the (c, g(1), g(2)) conformers for 4. The SCI-PCM calculations agree with the solvent effect on the nu(CO) band component relative intensities for 1-3. NBO analysis showed that the n(N) -> pi.(CO), orbital interaction is the main factor which stabilizes the gauche (g, g(1), g(2)) conformers for 1-4 into a larger extent relative to the cis (c, c(1), c(2)) ones. The n(y) -> pi(.)(Co,) sigma(C-Y) -> pi.(CO,) pi(CO) -> sigma(C-Y) and 7co orbital interactions still contribute, but into a minor extent for the stabilization of the gauche conformers relative to the cis ones. The existence of some pyramidalization at the nitrogen atom of the Weinreb amides 1-4 is responsible for the occurrence of Y(delta)-(4)center dot center dot center dot O(delta)-(9) and Y(delta)-(4)center dot center dot center dot N(delta)-(7) short contacts in the gauche (g, g(1), g(2)) conformers, which originates strong repulsive Coulombic interactions, acting in opposition to the large orbital stabilization of the gauche conformer with respect to the cis one. Therefore, a delicate balance of the Coulombic and orbital interactions seems to be responsible for the observed stabilization of the gauche (g, g(1), g(2)) and cis (c, c(1), c(2)) conformers, both in the gas phase and in the solution for 1-4. However, the cis conformer predominance, in non polar solvents, for the 2-substituted N-methoxy-N-methyl acetamides 1-3, bearing in a first raw (fluorine and oxygen) atoms, is in the opposite direction to the gauche conformer preference for the corresponding 2-substituted N,N-dialkyl-acetamides.
