We derive fundamental parameters of the embedded cluster DBSB 48 in the southern nebula Hoffleit 18 and the very young open cluster Trumpler 14, by means of deep JHK(s) infrared photometry. We build colour-magnitude and colour-colour diagrams to derive reddening and age, based on main sequence and pre-main sequence distributions. Radial stellar density profiles are used to study cluster structure and guide photometric diagram extractions. Field-star decontamination is applied to uncover the intrinsic cluster sequences in the diagrams. Ages are inferred from K-excess fractions. A prominent pre-main sequence population is present in DBSB 48, and the K-excess fraction f(K) = 55 +/- 6% gives an age of 1.1 +/- 0.5 Myr. A mean reddening of A(Ks) = 0.9 +/- 0.03 was found, corresponding to A(v) = 8.2 +/- 0.3. The cluster CMD is consistent with the far kinematic distance of 5 kpc for Hoffleit 18. For Trumpler 14 we derived similar parameters as in previous studies in the optical, in particular an age of 1.7 +/- 0.7 Myr. The fraction of stars with infrared excess in Trumpler 14 is f(K) = 28 +/- 4%. Despite the young ages, both clusters are described by a King profile with core radii R-core = 0.46 +/- 0.05 pc and R-core = 0.35 +/- 0.04 pc, respectively, for DBSB 48 and Trumpler 14. Such cores are smaller than those of typical open clusters. Small cores are probably related to the cluster formation and/or parent molecular cloud fragmentation. In DBSB 48, the magnitude extent of the upper main sequence is Delta K-s approximate to 2 mag, while in Trumpler 14 it is Delta K-s approximate to 5 mag, consistent with the estimated ages. Photoluminescence measurements at different temperatures have been performed to investigate the effects of confinement on the electron-phonon interaction in GaAs/AlGaAs quantum wells (QWs). A series of samples with different well widths in the range from 150 up to 750 A was analyzed. Using a fitting procedure based on the Passler-p model to describe the temperature dependence of the exciton recombination energy, we determined a fit parameter which is related to the strength of the electron-phonon interaction. On the basis of the behavior of this fit parameter as a function of the well width thickness of the samples investigated, we verified that effects of confinement on the exciton recombination energy are still present in QWs with well widths as large as 450 angstrom. Our findings also show that the electron-phonon interaction is three times stronger in GaAs bulk material than in Al(0.18)Ga(0.82)As/GaAs QWs.

Realistic coupled-channel calculation results for the (18)[O] + (58,60,64)Ni systems in the bombarding energy range 34.5 <= E(Lab) <= 6-5 MeV are presented. The overall agreement with existing experimental data is quite good. Our calculations predict an unexpected fusion suppression for above-barrier energies, with an important contribution of the two neutron ((18)O, (16)O) transfer channel couplings. The sub-barrier fusion enhancement and the above barrier suppression, predicted by the calculations, are consistent with the nuclear structure of the Ni region. Comparisons with recently reported similar effects in reactions induced by the (6)He projectile are discussed. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The evolution of the energy states of the phosphorous donor in silicon with magnetic field has been the subject of previous experimental and theoretical studies to fields of 10 T. We now present experimental optical absorption data to 18 T in combination with theoretical data to the same field. We observe features that are not revealed in the earlier work, including additional interactions and anti-crossings between the different final states. For example, according to the theory, for the ""1s -> 2p (+)"" transition, there are anti-crossings at about 5, 10, 14, 16, and 18 T. In the experiments, we resolve at least the 5, 10, and 14 T anti-crossings, and our data at 16 and 18 T are consistent with the calculations.
Measurement of the energy spectrum of cosmic rays above 10(18) eV using the Pierre Auger Observatory

We report a measurement of the flux of cosmic rays with unprecedented precision and Statistics using the Pierre Auger Observatory Based on fluorescence observations in coincidence with at least one Surface detector we derive a spectrum for energies above 10(18) eV We also update the previously published energy spectrum obtained with the surface detector array The two spectra are combined addressing the systematic uncertainties and, in particular. the influence of the energy resolution on the spectral shape The spectrum can be described by a broken power law E(-gamma) with index gamma = 3 3 below the ankle which is measured at log(10)(E(ankle)/eV) = 18 6 Above the ankle the spectrum is described by a power law with index 2 6 followed by a flux suppression, above about log(10)(E/eV) = 19 5, detected with high statistical significance (C) 2010 Elsevier B V All rights reserved

Oxygen isotope records of stalagmites from China and Oman reveal a weak summer monsoon event, with a double-plunging structure, that started 8.21 +/- 0.02 kyr B. P. An identical but antiphased pattern is also evident in two stalagmite records from eastern Brazil, indicating that the South American Summer Monsoon was intensified during the 8.2 kyr B. P. event. These records demonstrate that the event was of global extent and synchronous within dating errors of <50 years. In comparison with recent model simulations, it is plausible that the 8.2 kyr B. P. event can be tied in changes of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation triggered by a glacial lake draining event. This, in turn, affected North Atlantic climate and latitudinal position of the Intertropical Convergence Zone, resulting in the observed low-latitude monsoonal precipitation patterns.

Proteins have been considered important targets for reactive oxygen species. Indeed, tryptophan (W) has been shown to be a highly susceptible amino acid to many oxidizing agents, including singlet molecular oxygen [O-2 ((1)Delta(g))]. In this study, two cis- and trans-tryptophan hydroperoxide (WOOH) isomers were completely characterized by HPLC/mass spectrometry and NMR analyses as the major W-oxidation photoproducts. These photoproducts underwent thermal decay into the corresponding alcohols. Additionally, WOOHs were shown to decompose under heating or basification, leading to the formation of N-formylkynurenine (FMK). Using O-18-labeled hydroperoxides ((WOOH)-O-18-O-18), it was possible to confirm the formation of two oxygen-labeled FMK molecules derived from (WOOH)-O-18-O-18 decomposition. This result demonstrates that both oxygen atoms in FMK are derived from the hydroperoxide group. In addition, these reactions are chemiluminescent (CL), indicating a dioxetane cleavage pathway. This mechanism was confirmed since the CL spectrum of the WOOH decomposition matched the FMK fluorescence spectrum, unequivocally identifying FMK as the emitting species.

In mammalian membranes, cholesterol is concentrated in lipid rafts. The generation of cholesterol hydroperoxides (ChOOHs) and their decomposition products induces various types of cell damage. The decomposition of some organic hydroperoxides into peroxyl radicals is known to be a potential source of singlet molecular oxygen [O(2) ((1)Delta(g))] in biological systems. We report herein on evidence of the generation of O(2) ((1)Delta(g)) from ChOOH isomers in solution or in liposomes containing ChOOHs, which involves a cyclic mechanism from a linear tetraoxide intermediate originally proposed by Russell. Characteristic light emission at 1270 nm, corresponding to O(2) ((1)Delta(g)) monomolecular decay, was observed for each ChOOH isomer or in liposomes containing ChOOHs. Moreover, the presence of O(2) ((1)Delta(g)) was unequivocally demonstrated using the direct spectral characterization of near-infrared light emission. Using (18)O-labeled cholesterol hydroperoxide (Ch(18)O(18)OH), we observed the formation of (18)O-labeled O(2) ((1)Delta(g)) [(18)O(2) ((1)Delta(g))] by the chemical trapping of (18)O(2) ((1)Delta(g)) with 9,10-diphenylanthracene (DPA) and detected the corresponding (18)O-labeled DPA endoperoxide (DPA(18)O(18)O) and the (18)O-labeled products of the Russell mechanism using high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry. Photoemission properties and chemical trapping clearly demonstrate that the decomposition of Ch(18)O(18)OH generates (18)O(2) ((1)Delta(g)), which is consistent with the Russell mechanism and points to the involvement of O(2) ((1)Delta(g)) in cholesterol hydroperoxide-mediated cytotoxicity.
