The asymptotic behavior of a class of coupled second-order nonlinear dynamical systems is studied in this paper. Using very mild assumptions on the vector-field, conditions on the coupling parameters that guarantee synchronization are provided. The proposed result does not require solutions to be ultimately bounded in order to prove synchronization, therefore it can be used to study coupled systems that do not globally synchronize, including synchronization of unbounded solutions. In this case, estimates of the synchronization region are obtained. Synchronization of two-coupled nonlinear pendulums and two-coupled Duffing systems are studied to illustrate the application of the proposed theory.

The authors present a comparative analysis between a triple-band S-C-L erbium-doped fibre amplifier and a commercial semiconductor optical amplifier in a CWDM application scenario. Both technologies were characterised for gain and noise figures from 1480 to 1610 nm (S, C and L bands) and their systemic performances were evaluated in terms of bit error rate measurements for a wide range of optical power levels.

This work proposes a completely new approach for the design of resonant structures aiming at wavelength-filtering applications. The structure consists of a subwavelength metal-insulator-metal (MIM) waveguide presenting tilted coupled structures transversely arranged in the midpoint between the input and output ports. The cavity-like response of this device has shown that this concept can be particularly attractive for optical filter design for telecom applications. The extra degree of freedom provided by the tilting of the cavity has proved to be not only very effective on improving the quality factor of these structures, but also to be an elegant way of extending the range of applications for tuning multiple wavelengths, if necessary.

The nature of the molecular structure of plastics makes the properties of such materials markedly temperature dependent. In addition, the continuous increase in the utilization of polymeric materials in many specific applications has demanded knowledge of their physical properties, both during their processing as raw material, as well as over the working temperature range of the final polymer product. Thermal conductivity, thermal diffusivity and specific heat, namely the thermal properties, are the three most important physical properties of a material that are needed for heat transfer calculations. Recently, among several different methods for the determination of the thermal diffusivity and thermal conductivity, transient techniques have become the preferable way for measuring thermal properties of materials. In this work, a very simple and low cost variation of the well known Angstrom method is employed in the experimental determination of the thermal diffusivity of some selected polymers. Cylindrical shaped samples 3 cm diameter and 7 cm high were prepared by cutting from long cylindrical commercial bars. The reproducibility is very good, and the results obtained were checked against results obtained by the hot wire technique, laser flash technique, and when possible, they were also compared with data found in the literature. Thermal conductivity may be then derived from the thermal diffusivity with the knowledge of the bulk density and the specific heat, easily obtained by differential scanning calorimetry. In this paper, nonlinear dynamic equations of a wheeled mobile robot are described in the state-space form where the parameters are part of the state (angular velocities of the wheels). This representation, known as quasi-linear parameter varying, is useful for control designs based on nonlinear H(infinity) approaches. Two nonlinear H(infinity) controllers that guarantee induced L(2)-norm, between input (disturbances) and output signals, bounded by an attenuation level gamma, are used to control a wheeled mobile robot. These controllers are solved via linear matrix inequalities and algebraic Riccati equation. Experimental results are presented, with a comparative study among these robust control strategies and the standard computed torque, plus proportional-derivative, controller.

This paper deals with the application of the lumped dissipation model in the analysis of reinforced concrete structures, emphasizing the nonlinear behaviour of the materials The presented model is based on the original models developed by Cipollina and Florez-Lopez (1995) [12]. Florez-Lopez (1995) [13] and Picon and Florez-Lopez (2000) [14] However, some modifications were introduced in the functions that control the damage evolution in order to improve the results obtained. The efficiency of the new approach is evaluated by means of a comparison with experimental results on reinforced concrete structures such as simply supported beams, plane frames and beam-to-column connections Finally, the adequacy of the numerical model representing the global behaviour of framed structures is investigated and the limits of the analysis are discussed (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd All rights reserved

A nonlinear finite element model was developed to simulate the nonlinear response of three-leaf masonry specimens, which were subjected to laboratory tests with the aim of investigating the mechanical behaviour of multiple-leaf stone masonry walls up to failure. The specimens consisted of two external leaves made of stone bricks and mortar joints, and an internal leaf in mortar and stone aggregate. Different loading conditions, typologies of the collar joints, and stone types were taken into account. The constitutive law implemented in the model is characterized by a damage tensor, which allows the damage-induced anisotropy accompanying the cracking process to be described. To follow the post-peak behaviour of the specimens with sufficient accuracy it was necessary to make the damage model non-local, to avoid mesh-dependency effects related to the strain-softening behaviour of the material. Comparisons between the predicted and measured failure loads are quite satisfactory in most of the studied cases. (c) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The Generalized Finite Element Method (GFEM) is employed in this paper for the numerical analysis of three-dimensional solids tinder nonlinear behavior. A brief summary of the GFEM as well as a description of the formulation of the hexahedral element based oil the proposed enrichment strategy are initially presented. Next, in order to introduce the nonlinear analysis of solids, two constitutive models are briefly reviewed: Lemaitre`s model, in which damage and plasticity are coupled, and Mazars`s damage model suitable for concrete tinder increased loading. Both models are employed in the framework of a nonlocal approach to ensure solution objectivity. In the numerical analyses carried out, a selective enrichment of approximation at regions of concern in the domain (mainly those with high strain and damage gradients) is exploited. Such a possibility makes the three-dimensional analysis less expensive and practicable since re-meshing resources, characteristic of h-adaptivity, can be minimized. Moreover, a combination of three-dimensional analysis and the selective enrichment presents a valuable good tool for a better description of both damage and plastic strain scatterings.

This paper presents a strategy for the solution of the WDM optical networks planning. Specifically, the problem of Routing and Wavelength Allocation (RWA) in order to minimize the amount of wavelengths used. In this case, the problem is known as the Min-RWA. Two meta-heuristics (Tabu Search and Simulated Annealing) are applied to take solutions of good quality and high performance. The key point is the degradation of the maximum load on the virtual links in favor of minimization of number of wavelengths used; the objective is to find a good compromise between the metrics of virtual topology (load in Gb/s) and of the physical topology (quantity of wavelengths). The simulations suggest good results when compared to some existing in the literature.

This paper presents an analytical method for analyzing trusses with severe geometrically nonlinear behavior. The main objective is to find analytical solutions for trusses with different axial forces in the bars. The methodology is based on truss kinematics, elastic constitutive laws and equilibrium of nodal forces. The proposed formulation can be applied to hyper elastic materials, such as rubber and elastic foams. A Von Mises truss with two bars made by different materials is analyzed to show the accuracy of this methodology.

Aquatic humic substances (AHS) isolated from two characteristic seasons of the Negro river, winter and summer corresponding to floody and dry periods, were structurally characterized by (13)C nuclear magnetic ressonance. Subsequently, AHS aqueous solutions were irradiated with a polychromatic lamp (290-475 nm) and monitored by its total organic carbon (TOC) content, ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) absorbance, fluorescence and Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). As a result, a photobleaching upto 80% after irradiation of 48 h was observed. Conformational rearrangements and formation of low molecular complexity structures were formed during the irradiation, as deduced from the pH decrement and the fluorescence shifting to lower wavelengths. Additionally a significant mineralization with the formation Of CO(2), CO, and inorganic carbon compounds was registered, as assumed by TOC losses of up to 70%. The differences in photodegradation between samples expressed by photobleaching efficiency were enhanced in the summer sample and related to its elevated aromatic content. Aromatic structures are assumed to have high autosensitization capacity effects mediated by the free radical generation from quinone and phenolic moieties.

In repair works of reinforced concrete, patch repairs tend to crack in the interfacial zone between the mortar and the old concrete. This occurs basically due to the high degree of restriction that acts on a patch repair. For this reason, the technology of patch repair needs to be the subject of a discussion involving professionals who work with projects, construction maintenance and mix proportioning of repair mortars. In the present work, a study is presented on the benefits that the ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA) and acrylate polymers can provide in the mix proportioning of a repair mortar with respect to compressive, tensile and direct-shear bond strength. The results indicated that the increase in bond strength and the reduction in the influence of the deficiency in Curing conditioning are the main contributions offered by the polymers studied here. Following the approach developed for rods in Part 1 of this paper (Pimenta et al. in Comput. Mech. 42:715-732, 2008), this work presents a fully conserving algorithm for the integration of the equations of motion in nonlinear shell dynamics. We begin with a re-parameterization of the rotation field in terms of the so-called Rodrigues rotation vector, allowing for an extremely simple update of the rotational variables within the scheme. The weak form is constructed via non-orthogonal projection, the time-collocation of which ensures exact conservation of momentum and total energy in the absence of external forces. Appealing is the fact that general hyperelastic materials (and not only materials with quadratic potentials) are permitted in a totally consistent way. Spatial discretization is performed using the finite element method and the robust performance of the scheme is demonstrated by means of numerical examples.

A fully conserving algorithm is developed in this paper for the integration of the equations of motion in nonlinear rod dynamics. The starting point is a re-parameterization of the rotation field in terms of the so-called Rodrigues rotation vector, which results in an extremely simple update of the rotational variables. The weak form is constructed with a non-orthogonal projection corresponding to the application of the virtual power theorem. Together with an appropriate time-collocation, it ensures exact conservation of momentum and total energy in the absence of external forces. Appealing is the fact that nonlinear hyperelastic materials (and not only materials with quadratic potentials) are permitted without any prejudice on the conservation properties. Spatial discretization is performed via the finite element method and the performance of the scheme is assessed by means of several numerical simulations.
