Optimization of photo-Fenton degradation of copper phthalocyanine blue was achieved by response surface methodology (RSM) constructed with the aid of a sequential injection analysis (SIA) system coupled to a homemade photo-reactor. Highest degradation percentage was obtained at the following conditions [H(2)O(2)]/[phthalocyanine] = 7, [H(2)O(2)]/[FeSO(4)] = 10, pH = 2.5, and stopped flow time in the photo reactor = 30 s. The SIA system was designed to prepare a monosegment containing the reagents and sample, to pump it toward the photo-reactor for the specified time and send the products to a flow-through spectrophotometer for monitoring the color reduction of the dye. Changes in parameters such as reagent molar ratios. residence time and pH were made by modifications in the software commanding the SI system, without the need for physical reconfiguration of reagents around the selection valve. The proposed procedure and system fed the statistical program with degradation data for fast construction of response surface plots. After optimization, 97% of the dye was degraded. This paper describes the development of a sequential injection method to automate the fluorimetric determination of glyphosate based on a first step of oxidation to glycine by hypochlorite at 48 degrees C, followed by reaction with the fluorogenic reagent o-phthaldialdehyde in presence of 2-mercaptoethanol in borate buffer (pH > 9) to produce a fluorescent 1-(2`-hydroxyethylthio)-2-N-alkylisoindole. The proposed method has a linear response for glyphosate concentrations between 0.25 and 25.0 mu mol L(-1), with limits of detection and quantification of 0.08 and 0.25 mu mol L(-1), respectively. The sampling rate of the method is 18 samples per hour, consuming only a fraction of reagents consumed by the chromatographic method based on the same chemistry. The method was applied to study adsorption/desorption properties in a soil and in a sediment sample. Adsorption and desorption isotherms were properly fitted by Freundlich and Langmuir equations, leading to adsorption capacities of 1384 +/- 26 and 295 +/- 30 mg kg(-1) for the soil and sediment samples, respectively. These values are consistent with the literature, with the larger adsorption capacity of the soil being explained by its larger content of clay minerals, while the sediment was predominantly sandy. The first synthesis of the natural product (+)-mutisianthol was accomplished in 11 steps and in 21% overall yield from 2-methylanisole. The synthesis of its enantiomer was also performed in a similar overall yield. The absolute configuration of the sesquiterpene (+)-mutisianthol was assigned as (1S,3R). Key steps in the route are the asymmetric hydrogenation of a nonfunctionalized olefin using chiral iridium catalysts and the ring contraction of 1,2-dihydronaphthalenes using thallium(III) or iodine(III). The target molecules show moderate activity against the human tumor cell lines SF-295, HCT-8, and MDA-MB-435.

This work presents the use of sequential injection analysis (SIA) and the response surface methodology as a tool for optimization of Fenton-based processes. Alizarin red S dye (C.I. 58005) was used as a model compound for the anthraquinones family. whose pigments have a large use in coatings industry. The following factors were considered: [H(2)O(2)]:[Alizarin] and [H(2)O(2)]:[FeSO(4)] ratios and pH. The SIA system was designed to add reagents to the reactor and to perform on-line sampling of the reaction medium, sending the samples to a flow-through spectrophotometer for monitoring the color reduction of the dye. The proposed system fed the statistical program with degradation data for fast construction of response surface plots. After optimization, 99.7% of the dye was degraded and the TOC content was reduced to 35% of the original value. Low reagents consumption and high sampling throughput were the remarkable features of the SIA system. (C) 2008 Published by Elsevier B.V.

A high level theoretical approach is used to characterize for the first time a manifold of doublet and quartet A + S and Omega states correlating with the first two dissociation channels of an as yet experimentally unknown molecular species, SI, sulfur monoidide. A set of spectroscopic constants is determined, including vibrationally averaged spin-orbit coupling constants, vibrationally averaged dipole moments, and dissociation energies. The transition dipole moment function for the spin-forbidden transition a (4)Sigma -X (2)Pi, and the associated radiative lifetimes were also evaluated. Two possibilities to detect transitions experimentally and to derive spectroscopic constants are suggested. (C) 2011 Elsevier B. V. All rights reserved.

A flow system designed with solenoid valves is proposed for determination of weak acid dissociable cyanide, based on the reaction with o-phthalaldehyde (OPA) and glycine yielding a highly fluorescent isoindole derivative. The proposed procedure minimizes the main drawbacks related to the reference batch procedure, based on reaction with barbituric acid and pyridine followed by spectrophotometric detection, i.e., use of toxic reagents, high reagent consumption and waste generation, low sampling rate, and poor sensitivity. Retention of the sample zone was exploited to increase the conversion rate of the analyte with minimized sample dispersion. Linear response (r=0.999) was observed for cyanide concentrations in the range 1-200 mu g L(-1), with a detection limit (99.7% confidence level) of 0.5 mu g L(-1)(19 nmol L(-1)). The sampling rate and coefficient of variation (n=10) were estimated as 22 measurements per hour and 1.4%, respectively. The results of determination of weak acid dissociable cyanide in natural water samples were in agreement with those achieved by the batch reference procedure at the 95% confidence level. Additionally to the improvement in the analytical features in comparison with those of the flow system with continuous reagent addition (sensitivity and sampling rate 90 and 83% higher, respectively), the consumption of OPA was 230-fold lower.

Structural, vibrational, and energetic properties of new molecular species, HSI and HIS are investigated for the first time using a state-of-the-art theoretical approach. These molecules can be easily differentiated by their geometric parameters and vibrational spectra. HSI is much more stable, and a direct unimolecular isomerization is very unlikely. Kinetics estimates predict that only at low temperatures there is a possibility of isolating HIS. For HS-I, we estimate a bond dissociation energy of 46.25 kcal/mol, and a heat of formation at 298.15 K of 12.84 kcal/mol. For the H(2)S + I(2) -> HSI + HI reaction enthalpy, we found 8.40 kcal/ mol. The gas-phase ion/molecule reactions of F(-) and EtO(-) with Ge(OEt)(4) yield readily and exclusively pentacoordinated complexes XGe(OEt)(4)(-) (X = F, EtO) at pressures in the 10(-8) T range as observed by FT-ICR techniques. These hypervalent species are prone to undergo sequential fragmentations induced by infrared multiphoton excitation that lead to a variety of germyl and germanate anions. In the case of FGe(OEt)(4)(-), three primary competitive channels are observed in the IRMPD process that can be identified as (EtO)(3)GeO(-), F(EtO)(2)GeO(-) and (EtO)(3)Ge(-). Ab initio calculations have been carried out to characterize the primary fragmentation paths induced by IRMPD and the most favorable structure of the resulting anions. The gas-phase acidity of a number of these germanium-containing ions have been estimated by bracketing experiments and by theoretical calculations. Germanate anions such as (EtO)(3)GeO(-) undergo some interesting reactions with H(2)S to give rise to anions such as (EtO)(3)GeS(-) and (EtO)(2)Ge(OH)S(-). (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. A fast, high-yielding synthesis of diaryl ethers with use of mild and metal-free conditions has been developed. The scope includes bulky ortho-substituted diaryl ethers, which are difficult to obtain by metal-catalyzed protocols. Halo-substituents, racemization-prone amino acid derivatives, and heteroaromatics are also tolerated. The methodology is expected to be of high utility in the synthesis of complex molecules and in the pharmaceutical industry.

Co-solvents can minimize two of the major problems associated with the use of ionic liquids (ILs) as solvents for homogeneous derivatization of cellulose: high viscosity and limited miscibility with non-polar reagents or reaction products. Thus, the effects of 18 solvents and 3 binary solvent mixtures on cellulose solutions in three ILs were systematically studied with respect to the solution phase behavior. The applicable limits of these mixtures were evaluated and general guidelines for the use of co-solvents in cellulose chemistry could be advanced: Appropriate co-solvents should have EN T values (normalized empirical polarity) > 0.3, very low ``acidity`` (alpha < 0.5), and relatively high ""basicity`` (beta >= 0.4). Moreover, novel promising co-solvents and binary co-solvent mixtures were identified.

This paper describes the optimization and use of a Sequential Injection Analysis (SIA) procedure for ammonium determination in waters. Response Surface Methodology (RSM) was used as a tool for optimization of a procedure based on the modified Berthelot reaction. The SIA system was designed to (i) prepare the reaction media by injecting an air-segmented zone containing the reagents in a mixing chamber, (ii) to aspirate the mixture back to the holding coil after homogenization, (iii) drive it to a thermostated reaction coil, where the flow is stopped for a previously established time, and (iv) to pump the mixture toward the detector flow cell for the spectrophotometric measurements. Using a 100 mu mol L(-1) ammonium solution, the following factors were considered for optimization: reaction temperature (25 - 45 degrees C), reaction time (30 - 90 s), hypochlorite concentration (20 - 40 mmol L(-1)) nitroprusside concentration (10 - 40 mmol L(-1)) and salicylate concentration (0.1 - 0.3 mol L(-1)). The proposed system fed the statistical program with absorbance data for fast construction of response surface plots. After optimization of the method, figures of merit were evaluated, as well as the ammonium concentration in some water samples. No evidence of statistical difference was observed in the results obtained by the proposed method in comparison to those obtained by a reference method based on the phenol reaction.
