The complex mer-[RuCl(3)(dppb)(H(2)O)] [dppb = 1,4-bis(diphenylphosphino)butane] was used as a precursor in the synthesis of the complexes tc-[RuCl(2)(CO)(2)(dppb)], ct-[RuCl(2)(CO)(2)(dppb)]. cis-[RuCl(2)(dppb)(Cl-bipy)], [RuCl(2Ac4mT)(dppb)] (2Ac4mT = N(4)-meta-tolyl-2-acetylpyridine thiosemicarbazone ion) and trans-[RuCl(2)(dppb)(mang)] (mang = mangiferin or 1,3,6,7-tetrahydroxyxanthone-C2-beta-D-glucoside) complexes. For the synthesis of Run complexes, the Ru(III) atom in mer-[RuCl(3)(dppb)(H(2)O)] may be reduced by H(2)(g), forming the intermediate [Ru(2)Cl(4)(dppb)(2)], or by a ligand (such as H2Ac4mT or mangiferin). The X-ray structures of the cis-[RuCl(2)(dppb)(Cl-bipy)], tc-[RuCl(2)(CO)(2)(dppb)] and [RuCl(2Ac4mT)(dPpb)] complexes were determined. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

This study was conducted at three sites of different characteristics in Sao Paulo State Sao Paulo (SPA), Piracicaba (PRB) and Mate Atlantica Forest (MAT) PM(10), n-alkanes. pristane and phytane, PAHs, water-soluble ions and biomass burning tracers like levoglucosan and retene, were determined in quartz fiber filters. Samplings occurred on May 8th to August 8th, 2007 at the MAT site; on August 15th to 29th in 2007 and November 10th to 29th in 2008 at the PRB site and, March 13th to April 4th in 2007 and August 7th to 29th in 2008 at the SPA site Aliphatic compounds emitted biogenically were less abundant at the urban sites than at the forest site, and its distribution showed the influence of tropical vascular plants Air mass transport front biomass burning regions is likely to impact the sites with specific molecular markers The concentrations of all species were variable and dependent of seasonal changes In the most dry and polluted seasons, n-alkane and canon total concentrations were similar between the megacity and the biomass burning site PAHs and inorganic ion abundances were higher at Sao Paulo than Piracicaba, yet, the site influenced by biomass burning seems lobe the most impacted by the organic anion abundance in the atmosphere Pristane and phytane confirm the contamination by petroleum residues at urban sites, at the MAT site, biological activity and long range transport of pollutants might influence the levels of pristane (C) 2010 Elsevier B V All rights reserved

The applicability of Baeyer-Villiger monooxygenases (BVMOs) in organoboron chemistry has been explored through testing chemo-and enantioselective oxidations of a variety of boron-containing aromatic and vinylic compounds. Several BVMOs, namely: phenylacetone monooxygenase (PAMO), M446G PAMO mutant, 4-hydroxyacetophenone monooxygenase (HAPMO) and cyclohexanone monooxygenase (CHMO) were used in this study. The degree of chemoselectivity depends on the type of BVMO employed, in which the biocatalysts prefer boron-carbon oxidation over Baeyer-Villiger oxidation or epoxidation. Interestingly, it was discovered that PAMO can be used to perform kinetic resolution of boron-containing compounds with good enantioselectivities. These findings extend the known biocatalytic repertoire of BVMOs by showing a new family of compounds that can be oxidized by these enzymes.

An electrochemical biosensor using poly-phenol oxidasa (PPO) was constructed for the determination of phenolic compounds. The PPO employed with enzyme, it was obtained from Archontophoenix Cunninghamiana. The biosensor showed range of linearity in the range of 1 x 10(-3) to 1 x 10(-4) mol/L and a detection limit of 1 x 10(-4) mol/L. The optimal pH was 6,7 in medium phosphate buffer. The lifetime of the biosensors was 1 months, stored in phosphate buffer solution 0.1 mol/L to ambient temperature.

The inhibition of human cysteine cathepsins B, L, S and K was evaluated by a set of hypervalent tellurium compounds (telluranes) comprising both organic and inorganic derivatives. All telluranes studied showed a time-and concentration-dependent irreversible inhibition of the cathepsins, and their second-order inactivation rate constants were determined. The organic derivatives were potent inhibitors of the cathepsins and clear specificities were detected, which were parallel to their known substrate specificities. In all cases, the activity of the tellurane-inhibited cathepsins was recovered by treatment of the inactivated enzymes with reducing agents. The maximum stoichiometry of the reaction between cysteine residues and telluranes were also determined. The presented data indicate that it is possible to design organic compounds with a tellurium(IV) moiety as a novel warhead that covalently modifies the catalytic cysteine, and which also form strong interactions with subsites of cathepsins B, L, S and K, resulting in more specific inhibition.

A systematic and comprehensive study of the interaction of citrate-stabilized gold nanoparticles with triruthenium cluster complexes of general formula [Ru(3)(CH(3)COO)(6)(L)](+) [L = 4-cyanopyridine (4-CNpy), 4,4`-bipyridine (4,4`-bpy) or 4,4`-bis(pyridyl)ethylene (bpe)] has been carried out. The cluster-nanoparticle interaction in solution and the construction of thin films of the hybrid materials were investigated in detail by electronic and surface plasmon resonance (SPR) spectroscopy, Raman scattering spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Citrate-stabilized gold nanoparticles readily interacted with [Ru(3)O(CH(3)COO)(6)(L)(3)](+) complexes to generate functionalized nanoparticles that tend to aggregate according to rates and extents that depend on the bond strength defined by the characteristics of the cluster L ligands following the sequence bpe > 4,4`-bpy >> 4-CNpy. The formation of compact thin films of hybrid AuNP/[Ru(3)O(CH(3)COO)(6)(L)(3)](+) derivatives with L = bpe and 4,4`-bpy indicated that the stability/lability of AuNP-cluster bonds as well as their solubility are important parameters that influence the film contruction process. Fluorine-doped tin oxide electrodes modified with thin films of these nanomaterials exhibited similar electrocatalytic activity but much higher sensitivity than a conventional gold electrode in the oxidation of nitrite ion to nitrate depending on the bridging cluster complex, demonstrating the high potential for the development of amperometric sensors.

The kinetic resolution of (+/-)-iodophenylethanols was carried out using lipase from Candida antarctica and in some cases the enantiomeric excesses were high (up to >98%). Enantiomerically enriched (S)-iodophenylethanols produced by the enzymatic resolution process were used in the synthesis of chiral biphenyl compounds by the Suzuki reaction with good yields (63-65%). The structure of 7,4`-dimethoxy-3`-acetylflavone (tithonin-Ac) has been determined by X-ray diffraction and its geometry is compared with optimized geometrical parameters obtained by means of density functional theory at the B3LYP/6-311++G(d,p) level of calculation. in addition, vertical ionization potential (IPv) and acidity for tithonin-Ac and two derivatives have been also calculated. Calculations of spin densities were also performed for the radical formed by the electron abstraction of other flavones. The unpaired electron is located on C3 carbon atom (21-25%). In the treatment of cyclometallated dimer [Pd(dmba)(mu-Cl)](2) (dmba = N,N-dimethylbenzylamine) with AgNO(3) and acetonitrile the result was the monomeric cationic precursor [Pd(dmba)(NCMe)(2)](NO(3)) (NCMe=acetonitrile) (1). Compound 1 reacted with m-nitroaniline (m-NAN) and pirazine (pz), originating [Pd(dmba)(ONO(2))(m-NAN)] (2) and [{Pd(dmba)(ONO(2))}(2)(mu-pz)] center dot H(2)O (3), respectively. These compounds were characterized by elemental analysis, IR and NMR spectroscopy. The IR spectra of (2-3) display typical bands of monodentade O-bonded nitrate groups, whereas the NMR data of 3 are consistent with the presence of bridging pyrazine ligands. The structure of compound 3 was determined by Xray diffraction analysis. This packing consists of a supramolecular chain formed by hydrogen bonding between the water molecule and nitrato ligands of two consecutive [Pd(2)(dmba)(2)(ONO(2))2(mu-pz)] units.
