This paper describes the development of a sequential injection method to automate the fluorimetric determination of glyphosate based on a first step of oxidation to glycine by hypochlorite at 48 degrees C, followed by reaction with the fluorogenic reagent o-phthaldialdehyde in presence of 2-mercaptoethanol in borate buffer (pH > 9) to produce a fluorescent 1-(2`-hydroxyethylthio)-2-N-alkylisoindole. The proposed method has a linear response for glyphosate concentrations between 0.25 and 25.0 mu mol L(-1), with limits of detection and quantification of 0.08 and 0.25 mu mol L(-1), respectively. The sampling rate of the method is 18 samples per hour, consuming only a fraction of reagents consumed by the chromatographic method based on the same chemistry. The method was applied to study adsorption/desorption properties in a soil and in a sediment sample. Adsorption and desorption isotherms were properly fitted by Freundlich and Langmuir equations, leading to adsorption capacities of 1384 +/- 26 and 295 +/- 30 mg kg(-1) for the soil and sediment samples, respectively. These values are consistent with the literature, with the larger adsorption capacity of the soil being explained by its larger content of clay minerals, while the sediment was predominantly sandy. STM and impedance results of the self-assembled monolayer (SAM) formed with thionicotinamide (TNA) on gold indicate the presence of defects that increase with the immersion time of the electrode in the TNA solution affecting the SAM electroactivity toward the electron transfer reaction of the cytochrome e metalloprotein and [Fe(CN)(6)](4-) and [Ru(NH(3))(6)](3+) complexes. It was observed that this electroactivity was also affected by the pH of the electrolyte solution. SERS and STM data indicate sulfur coordination to the surface with contribution of the NH(2) group. From the dependence of the TNA surface coverage on the temperature and concentration in solution, thermodynamic parameters of adsorption were determined.

In this work. XG extracted from Tamarindus indica (XGT) and Copaifera langsdorffii (XGC) seeds were deposited onto Si wafers as thin films. The characteristics of XGT and XGC adsorbed layers were compared with a commercial XG sample (TKP, Tamarind kernel powder) by ellipsometry, and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Moreover, the adsorption of oxidized derivative of XGT (To60) onto amino-terminated Si wafers and the immobilization of bovine serum albumin (BSA) onto polysaccharides covered wafers, as a function of pH, were also investigated. The XG samples presented molar ratios Glc:Xyl:Gal of 2.4:2.1:1 (XGC) 2.8: 23: 1 (XGT) and 1.91.91 (TKP). The structure of XGT and XGC was determined by O-methy alditol acetate derivatization and showed similar features, but XGC confirmed the presence of more alpha-D-Xyl branches due to more beta-D-Gal ends. XGT deposited onto Si adsorbed as fibers and small entities uniformly distributed, as evidenced by AFM, while TPK and XGC formed larger aggregates. The thickness of To60 onto amino-terminated surface was similar to that determined for XGT onto Si wafers. A maximum in the adsorbed amount of BSA occurred close to its isoelectric point (5.5). These findings indicate that XGT and To60 are potential materials for the development of biomaterials and biotechnological devices. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Two porous mixed valent diruthenium(II,III)-dicarboxylate compounds have been prepared and characterized by spectroscopic methods, X-ray diffraction and thermogravimetry. Crystalline solids of [Ru(2)(tere)(2)Cl] center dot 3.5H(2)O (tere=terephthalate) and [Ru(2)(adip)(2)Cl] center dot 1.5H(2)O (adip=adipate) consist of extended chains in which polymeric layers of multiply metal-metal bonded [Ru(2)](5+) cores are bridged by dicarboxylate ligands in paddlewheel type geometries. Units of [Ru(2)(dicarboxylate)(2)](n)(+) are linked by axial bridging chloride ions generating three-dimensional networks. The polymers loose non-bonded water molecules at low temperatures but do not undergo thermal decomposition below 280-300 degrees C. Both of compounds exhibit high BET surface areas, [Ru(2)(tere)(2)Cl]: 235 m(2) g(-1) and [Ru(2)(adip)(2)Cl]: 281 m(2) g(-1), and occlude similar numbers of mol of N(2) per mol of metal. The terephthalate ligand generated an organized structure with supermicropores (total pore size of 0.24 cm(3) g(-1)) while the adipate ligand led to a mesoporous structure (total pore sizes of 0.47 cm(3) g(-1)) for the corresponding diruthenium(II,III)-dicarboxylate polymers. The adsorption of DPKSH onto Amberlite XAD-2 (styrene resin) and XAD-7 (acrylic ester resin) has been investigated, at (25 +/- 1)degrees C and pH 4.7. The experimental equilibrium data were fitted to the Langmuir, Freundlich, and Dubinin-Radushkevich (D-R) models. These three models provide a very good fit for both resins and the respective constants K(L), K(F), and K(DR) were calculated. For the same DPKSH concentration interval, the minimum time of contact for adsorption maximum at XAD-7 was smaller than at XAD-2 and the maximum amount of DPKSH adsorbed per gram of XAD-2 is smaller than at XAD-7. The investigation indicates that the mean sorption energy (E) characterizes a physical adsorption and the surfaces of both resins are energetically heterogeneous. The constants obtained in these studied systems were correlated and compared with those obtained for the silica gel/DPKSH system. (C) 2008 Published by Elsevier Inc.

Benzene adsorbed on highly acidic sulfated TiO2 (S-TiO2) shows an intriguing resonance Raman (RR) effect, with excitation in the blue-violet region. There are very interesting spectral features: the preferential enhancement of the e(2g) mode (1595 cm(-1)) in relation to the a(1g) mode (ring-breathing mode at 995 cm(-1)) and the appearance of bands at 1565 and 1514 cm(-1). The band at 1565 cm(-1) is probably one of the components of the e(2g) split band, originally a doubly degenerate mode (8a, 8b) in neat benzene, and the band at 1514 cm(-1) is assigned to the 19a mode, an inactive mode in neat benzene. These facts indicate a lowering of symmetry in adsorbed benzene, which may be caused by a strong interaction between S-TiO2 and the benzene molecule with formation of a benzene to Ti (IV) charge transfer (CT) complex or by the formation of a benzene radical cation species. However, the RR spectra of the adsorbed benzene cannot be assigned to the benzene radical cation because the observed wavenumber of the ring-breathing mode does not have the value expected for this species. Moreover, it was found by ESR measurements that the amount of radicals was very low, and so it was concluded that a CT complex is the species that originates the RR spectra. The most favorable intensification of the band at 1595 cm(-1) in the RR spectra of benzene/S-TiO2 at higher excitation energy corroborates this hypothesis, as an absorption band in this energy range, assigned to a CT transition, is observed. This paper studies the selectivity of Well-defined Au and Ag nanostructures as substrates for the SERS, (surface-enhanced Raman scattering) detection of simazine (6-chloro-N,N`-diethyl-1,3,5-triazine-2,4-diamine) and atrazine (6-chloro-N-ethyl-N`-isopropyl-1,3,5-triazine-2,4-diamine). Our data showed that simazine and atrazine displayed similar SERS spectra when the Au was employed as substrate. Conversely, distinct SERS signatures were obtained upon the utilization of Ag substrates. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations and vibrational assignments suggested that, while simazine and atrazine adsorbed on Au via the N3 position of the triazine ring, simazine adsorbed on Ag via N3 and atrazine via N5. The results presented herein demonstrated that the adsorption geometry of analyte molecules can play a central role over substrate selectivity in SERS, which is particularly important in applications involving ultrasensitive analysis of mixtures containing structurally similar molecules.

The effect of CaCl(2), Ca(NO(3))(2), CaSO(4), CaCO(3) and Ca(3)(PO(4))(2) on the flow behavior of xanthan gum solutions was investigated. Regardless the concentration and type of calcium salt used, xanthan solutions presented pseudoplastic behavior. The soluble salts (CaCl(2) and Ca(NO(3))(2)) induced the disordered state in the xanthan chains at concentration of 1.0 g/L or 10 g/L, decreasing the flow consistency index (K) values. At 100 g/L soluble salts K values were similar to those found for pure xanthan solutions, whereas at the same concentration of insoluble particles the K values increased 20%. The adsorption of xanthan gum onto Si/SiO(2) surfaces in the presence of calcium salts was investigated by ellipsometry and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The adsorbed layer of xanthan onto Si/SiO(2) consisted of two regions: (i) a thin acid resistant sublayer, where xanthan chains were like highly entangled fibers and (ii) a thick upperlayer, whose morphology was calcium salt dependent. The adsorption of 4-aminopyridine (4-AP) on Co and Ag electrodes in acid or alkaline solutions of KCl and KI electrolyte salts were monitored by the Surface-enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS) technique. The SERS intensity for the Ag electrode was in 2 orders of magnitude higher than for the Co electrode, due to the enhancement of the Raman cross-section on Ag by the surface-plasmon excitation. In acidic chloride medium (pH 4), the SERS results for Ag electrodes indicate that the protonated form of 4-AP (4-APH(+)) adsorbs in the potential range of -0.1 to -0.6 V (Ag broken vertical bar AgCl broken vertical bar KCl sat) through hydrogen-bonding between 4-APH(+) and Cl(-) adsorbed on the electrode surface: at more negative potentials the neutral form 4-AP is the predominant adsorbed species. For Co electrode in the same medium, only bands due to neutral 4-AP were observed in the spectra at -0.8 and -0.9 V. For more negative potentials bands assigned to both 4-AP and 4-AP surface complex are observed, with the lasts being enhanced, as the potentials are turned more negative. In alkaline chloride medium (pH 13), for less negative potentials the bands assigned to free 4-AP were observed in the spectra of both Ag and Co surfaces. For more negative potentials, only bands assigned to the 4-AP surface complex were observed. For 0.1 mol L(-1) KI acidic or alkaline solutions, bands assigned to 4-AP and 4-APH(+) were observed in a wider potential range than in chloride solutions. An adsorption scheme of 4-AP on Ag and Co is proposed for acidic and alkaline solutions. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The adsorption of the diazo dye Direct Red 23 onto a zinc oxide surface at 30 degrees C in the dark was investigated. The color reduction was monitored by spectrophotometry at 503 run. The FTIR and Raman spectra of the Direct Red 23 adsorption as a function of ZnO concentration were registered. From the PM3 semi-empirical calculations of the atomic charge density and dipole moment of the Direct Red 23 molecule, it was demonstrated that the azo, dye molecule may be adsorbed onto the ZnO Surface through molecule geometry modifications, enhancing the interfacial area causing a variation in the bonding frequencies. Canonical Monte Carlo simulations for the Au(210)/H(2)O interface, using a force field recently proposed by us, are reported. The results exhibit the main features normally observed in simulations of water molecules in contact with different noble metal surfaces. The calculations also assess the influence of the surface topography on the structural aspects of the adsorbed water and on the distribution of the water molecules in the direction normal to the metal surface plane. The adsorption process is preferential at sites in the first layer of the metal. The analysis of the density profiles and dipole moment distributions points to two predominant orientations. Most of the molecules are adsorbed with the molecular plane parallel to surface, while others adsorb with one of the O-H bonds parallel to the surface and the other bond pointing towards the bulk liquid phase. There is also evidence of hydrogen bond formation between the first and second solvent layers at the interface. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We present in this work a comprehensive investigation of the role played by dissolved tetrafluoroboric acid on the electrochemical response of a polycrystalline platinum electrode in acidic media. HBF(4) from two different suppliers was employed and characterized in terms of the amount of arsenic contamination by Inductively Coupled Plasma-Optical Emission Spectroscopy. The effect of different amounts of HBF(4) on the voltammetric profile of the Pt vertical bar HClO(4)(aq) interface was investigated by means of electrochemical quartz crystal nanobalance (EQCN). Despite the comparable cyclic voltammograms, the presence of arsenic in one of the two HBF(4) used resulted in dramatic variations in the mass change profile, which evidences the deposition/dissolution of arsenic prior to the surface oxidation. For the arsenic-free HBF(4), its effect on the mass change profile was mainly associated to anion adsorption. The impact of dissolved HBF(4) on the electro-oxidation of formic acid was rationalized in terms of two contributions: current enhancement at low potentials due to the arsenic-assisted formic acid electro-oxidation and inhibition at high potentials due to anion adsorption. The chemical mechanism of the (1)PN formation was successfully studied by using the CCSD(T)/6-311++G(3df,3pd) level of theory. The (1)NH(3) + (3)PH and (4)P + NH(3) reaction paths are not energetically favorable to form the (1)PN molecule. However, the (3)NH + (3)PH, (4)N + (3)PH(3), (4)N + (3)PH, (4)P + (3)NH, and (4)P + (2)NH(2) reaction paths to form the (1)PN molecule are only energetically favorable by taking place through specific transition states to form the (1)PN molecule. The NH(3) + (3)PH, (4)N + (1)PH(3), NH(3) + (4)P, and (4)N + (2)PH(2) reactions are spin-forbidden and the probability of hopping for these reactions was estimated to be 0 by the Landau-Zener theory. This is the first detailed study on the chemical mechanism for the (1)PN formation. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
