Austenitic stainless steels cannot be conventionally surface treated at temperatures close to 550 degrees C due to intense precipitation of nitrides or carbides. Plasma carburizing allows introducing carbon in the steel at temperatures below 500 degrees C without carbide precipitation. Plasma carburizing of AISI 316L was carried out at 480 degrees C and 400 degrees C, during 20 h, using CH(4) as carbon carrier gas. The results show that carbon expanded austenite (gamma(c)), 20 mu m in depth, was formed on the surface after the 480 degrees C treatment. Carbon expanded austenite (gamma(c)), 8 mu m in depth, was formed on the surface after the 400 degrees C treatment. DRX results showed that the austenitic FCC lattice parameter increases from 0.358 nm to 0.363 nm for the 400 degrees C treatment and to 0.369 nm for the 480 degrees C treatment, giving an estimation of circa 10 at.% carbon content for the latter. Lattice distortion, resulting from the expansion and the associated compressive residual stresses increases the surface hardness to 1040 HV(0.025). Micro-scale tensile tests were conducted on specimens prepared with the conditions selected above, which has indicated that the damage imposed to the expanded austenite layer was more easily related to each separated grain than to the overall macro-scale stresses imposed by the tensile test. A series of new phenyl-based conjugated copolymers has been synthesized and investigated by vibrational and photoluminescence spectroscopy (PL). The materials are: poly( 1,4-phenylene-alt-3,6-pyridazine) (COP-PIR), poly(9,9-dioctylfluorene)-co-quaterphenylene (COP-PPP) and poly[(1,4-phenylene-alt-3,6-pyridazine)-co-(1,4-phenylene-alt-9,9-dioctylfluorene)] (COP-PIR-FLUOR), with 3.5% of fluorene. COP-PPP and COP-PIR-FLUOR have high fluorescence quantum yields in solution. Infrared and Raman spectra were used to check the chemical structure of the compounds. The copolymers exhibit blue emission ranging front 2.8 to 3.6 eV when excited at E(exc)=4.13 eV. Stokes-shift Values were estimated on pristine samples in their condensed state from steady-state PL-emission and PL-excitation spectra. They suggest a difference in the torsional angle between the molecular configuration of the polymer blocks at the absorption and PL transitions and also in the photoexcitation diffusion. Additionally, the time-resolved PL of these materials has been investigated by using 100 fs laser pulses at E(exc)=4.64 eV and a streak camera. Results show very fast biexponential kinetics for the two fluorene-based polymers with decay times below 300 ps indicating both intramolecular, fast radiative recombination and migration of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. By contrast, the PL of COP-PIR is less intense and longer lived, indicating that excitons are confined to the chains in this polymer. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

All textile uses of cellulose acetate involve acetone recovery, which, because of safety issues, results in large installations, in order to work with dilute streams. This compromises the efficiency of all of the involved unit operations, in this case, acetone absorption in cold water, acetone distillation, and water chilling, making them more expensive. The present article proposes the improvement of the absorption of acetone in water, traditionally performed with sieve trays, by using structured packing instead. The advantageous implementation was enabled through the utilization of a calculation methodology based on concepts of thermodynamic equilibrium of the binary acetone/water system and empirical relations that allow the evaluation of the hydrodynamics of the proposed modification.

In this work SiOxNy films are produced and characterized. Series of samples were deposited by the plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) technique at low temperatures from silane (SiH4), nitrous oxide (N2O) and helium (He) precursor gaseous mixtures, at different deposition power in order to analyze the effect of this parameter on the films structural properties, on the SiOxNy/Si interface quality and on the SiOxNy effective charge density. In order to compare the film structural properties with the interface (SiOxNy/Si) quality and effective charge density, MOS capacitors were fabricated using these films as dielectric layer. X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy (XANES), at the Si-K edge, was utilized to investigate the structure of the films and the material bonding characteristics were analyzed through Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The MOS capacitors were characterized by low and high frequency capacitance (C-V) measurements, in order to obtain the interface state density (D-it) and the effective charge density (N-ss). An effective charge density linear reduction for decreasing deposition power was observed, result that is attributed to the smaller amount of ions present in the plasma for low RF power. In this work, the structure and morphology of silicon oxynitride films deposited by the PECVD technique were studied. The films were deposited under two different conditions: (a) SiOxNy with chemical compositions varying from SiO2 to Si3N4 via the control of a N2O + N-2 + SiH4 gas mixture, and (b) Si-rich SiOxNy films via the control of a N2O + SiH4 gas mixture. The analyses were performed using X-ray near edge spectroscopy (XANES) at the Si-K edge, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy (RBS). For samples with chemical composition varying from SiO2 to Si3N4, the diffraction patterns obtained by TEM exhibited changes with the chemical composition, in agreement with the XANES results. For silicon-rich silicon oxynitride samples, the formation of a-Si clusters was observed and the possibility of obtaining Si nanocrystals after annealing depending on the composition and temperature was realized. The present work reports the thermal annealing process, the number of layer and electrochemical process effect in the optical response quality of Bragg and microcavity devices that were applied as organic solvent sensors. These devices have been obtained by using porous silicon (PS) technology. The optical characterization of the Bragg reflector, before annealing, showed a broad photonic band-gap structure with blue shifted and narrowed after annealing process. The electrochemical process used to obtain the PS-based device imposes the limit in the number of layers because of the chemical dissolution effect. The interface roughness minimizations in the devices have been achieved by using the double electrochemical cell setup. The microcavity devices showed to have a good sensibility for organic solvent detection. The thermal annealed device showed better sensibility feature and this result was attributed to passivation of the surface devices. (c) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

We have synthesized phenylene-vinylene (PV) polymers containing segments with different conjugation lengths interspaced by random distributed aliphatic segments. Infrared (IR) and ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopies, hydrogen nuclear magnetic resonance ((1)H NMR) spectrometry and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) were used to characterize the prepared copolymers` structures. Polymers molecular weights were determined by gel permeation chromatography (GPC). The effect of polymer structure and composition on emission properties was studied by fluorescence (PL) spectroscopy under different irradiation wavelength. The emission energy shift due to segments with longer conjugation lengths was minor owed to the low polymerization degree achieved.

A network of Kuramoto oscillators with different natural frequencies is optimized for enhanced synchronizability. All node inputs are normalized by the node connectivity and some important properties of the network Structure are determined in this case: (i) optimized networks present a strong anti-correlation between natural frequencies of adjacent nodes: (ii) this anti-correlation should be as high as possible since the average path length between nodes is maintained as small as in random networks: and (iii) high anti-correlation is obtained without any relation between nodes natural frequencies and the degree of connectivity. We also propose a network construction model with which it is shown that high anti-correlation and small average paths may be achieved by randomly rewiring a fraction of the links of a totally anti-correlated network, and that these networks present optimal synchronization properties. Titanium oxide (TiO(2)) has been extensively applied in the medical area due to its proved biocompatibility with human cells [1]. This work presents the characterization of titanium oxide thin films as a potential dielectric to be applied in ion sensitive field-effect transistors. The films were obtained by rapid thermal oxidation and annealing (at 300, 600, 960 and 1200 degrees C) of thin titanium films of different thicknesses (5 nm, 10 nm and 20 nm) deposited by e-beam evaporation on silicon wafers. These films were analyzed as-deposited and after annealing in forming gas for 25 min by Ellipsometry, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman Spectroscopy (RAMAN), Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), Rutherford Backscattering Spectroscopy (RBS) and Ti-K edge X-ray Absorption Near Edge Structure (XANES). Thin film thickness, roughness, surface grain sizes, refractive indexes and oxygen concentration depend on the oxidation and annealing temperature. Structural characterization showed mainly presence of the crystalline rutile phase, however, other oxides such Ti(2)O(3), an interfacial SiO(2) layer between the dielectric and the substrate and the anatase crystalline phase of TiO(2) films were also identified. Electrical characteristics were obtained by means of I-V and C-V measured curves of Al/Si/TiO(x)/Al capacitors. These curves showed that the films had high dielectric constants between 12 and 33, interface charge density of about 10(10)/cm(2) and leakage current density between 1 and 10(-4) A/cm(2). Field-effect transistors were fabricated in order to analyze I(D) x V(DS) and log I(D) x Bias curves. Early voltage value of -1629 V, R(OUT) value of 215 M Omega and slope of 100 mV/dec were determined for the 20 nm TiO(x) film thermally treated at 960 degrees C. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. Austenitic stainless steels cannot be conventionally nitrided at temperatures near 550 degrees C due to the intense precipitation of chromium nitrides in the diffusion zone. The precipitation of chro-mium nitrides increases the hardness but severely impairs corrosion resistance. Plasma nitriding allows introducing nitrogen in the steel at temperatures below 450 degrees C, forming pre-dominantly expanded austenite (gamma(N)), with a crystalline structure best represented by a special triclin-ic lattice, with a very high nitrogen atomic concentration promoting high compressive residual stresses at the surface, increasing substrate hardness from 4 GPa up to 14 GPa on the nitrided case.

This work presents for the first time to our knowledge the fabrication and characterization of rib waveguides produced with PbO-GeO(2) (PGO) thin films. The target was manufactured using pure oxides ( 60 PbO-40 GeO(2), in wt%) and amorphous thin films were produced with the RF sputtering technique. PGO thin films present small absorption in the visible and in the near infrared and refractive index of similar to 2.0. The definition of the rib waveguide structure was made using conventional optical lithography followed by plasma etching, performed in a Reactive Ion Etching (RIE) reactor. Light propagation mode in the waveguide structure was analyzed using integrated optic simulation software. Optical loss measurements were performed to determine the propagation loss at 633 nm, for ribs with height of 70 nm and width of 3-5 mu m; experimental values around 2 dB/cm were found for the propagation loss and confirmed the theoretical calculations. The results obtained demonstrate that PGO thin films are potential candidates for application in integrated optics. Published by Elsevier B.V.

Bioethanol is a biofuel produced mainly from the fermentation of carbohydrates derived from agricultural feedstocks by the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. One of the most widely adopted strains is PE-2, a heterothallic diploid naturally adapted to the sugar cane fermentation process used in Brazil. Here we report the molecular genetic analysis of a PE-2 derived diploid (JAY270), and the complete genome sequence of a haploid derivative (JAY291). The JAY270 genome is highly heterozygous (similar to 2 SNPs/kb) and has several structural polymorphisms between homologous chromosomes. These chromosomal rearrangements are confined to the peripheral regions of the chromosomes, with breakpoints within repetitive DNA sequences. Despite its complex karyotype, this diploid, when sporulated, had a high frequency of viable spores. Hybrid diploids formed by outcrossing with the laboratory strain S288c also displayed good spore viability. Thus, the rearrangements that exist near the ends of chromosomes do not impair meiosis, as they do not span regions that contain essential genes. This observation is consistent with a model in which the peripheral regions of chromosomes represent plastic domains of the genome that are free to recombine ectopically and experiment with alternative structures. We also explored features of the JAY270 and JAY291 genomes that help explain their high adaptation to industrial environments, exhibiting desirable phenotypes such as high ethanol and cell mass production and high temperature and oxidative stress tolerance. The genomic manipulation of such strains could enable the creation of a new generation of industrial organisms, ideally suited for use as delivery vehicles for future bioenergy technologies.

We studied the structure of a population of Hydromedusa maximiliani associated with a stream in Parque Estadual da Serra do Mar, Nucleo Itutinga-Piloes, southeastern Brazil, between October 2004 and October 2005. Twenty-five individuals were captured, and a population size of 43.72 +/- 23.7 individuals was estimated. This value is similar to that of the population of Parque Estadual Carlos Botelho, another Atlantic forest reserve of southeastern Brazil. Males were recaptured more frequently than females, suggesting higher activity and/or greater movement of males.

The use of chloroplast DNA markers (cpDNA) helps to elucidate questions related to ecology, evolution and genetic structure. The knowledge of inter-and intra-population genetic structure allows to design effective conservation and management strategies for tropical tree species. With the aim to help the conservation of Hymenaea stigonocarpa of the Cerrado (Brazilian savanna) in Sao Paulo State, an analysis of the spatial genetic structure (SGS) was conducted in two populations using five universal chloroplast microsatellite loci (cpSSR). The population of 68 trees of H. stigonocarpa in the Ecological Station of Itirapina (ESI) had a single haplotype, indicating a strong founder effect. In turn, the population of 47 trees of H. stigonocarpa in a contiguous area that includes the Ecological Station of Assis and the Assis State Forest (ESA), showed six haplotypes ((n) over cap (h) = 6) with a moderate haplotype diversity ((h) over cap = 0667 + 0094), revealing that it was founded by a small number of maternal lineages. The SGS analysis for the population ESA/ASF, using Moran`s I index, indicated limited seed dispersal. Considering SGS, for ex situ conservation strategies in the population ESA/ASF, seed harvesting should require a minimum distance of 750 m among seed-trees.
