The catalytic activity and durability of 2 wt.% Pd/Al2O3 in powder and washcoated on cordierite monoliths were examined for the liquid phase hydrodechlorination (LPHDC) of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins/polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs), also known as dioxins. NaOH was employed as a neutralizing agent, and 2-propanol was used as a hydrogen donor and a solvent. Fresh and spent powder and monolith samples were characterized by elemental analysis, surface area, hydrogen chemisorption, scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM/EDX), and transmission electron microscopy/energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (TEM/EDX). Three reactor configurations were compared including the slurry and monolith batch reactors as well as the bubble loop column resulting in 100, 70, and 72% sample toxicity reduction, respectively, after 5 h of reaction. However, the slurry and monolith batch reactors lead to catalyst sample loss via a filtration process (slurry) and washcoat erosion (monolith batch), as well as rapid deactivation of the powder catalyst samples. The monolith employed in the bubble loop column remained stable and active after four reaction runs. Three preemptive regeneration methods were evaluated on spent monolith catalyst including 2-propanol washing, oxidation/reduction, and reduction. All three procedures reactivated the spent catalyst samples, but the combustion methods proved to be more efficient at eliminating the more stable poisons.

Phase thermodynamics is often perceived as a difficult subject that many students never become fully comfortable with. The Gibbsian geometrical framework can help students to gain a better understanding of phase equilibria. An exercise to interpret the vapor-liquid equilibrium of a binary azeotropic mixture, using the equilibrium condition based on the common tangent plane criterion (the Gibbs stability test), is presented in this paper. From a T-composition phase diagram for the mixture, the temperature is set at different values: above, intermediate to, and below the boiling temperatures of the pure components, to intersect different regions of the system. Students prepare an Excel spreadsheet where the Gibbs energy of mixing of the vapor and liquid mixtures are calculated and represented over the whole range of compositions and then, apply the Gibbs stability test to ascertain the aggregation state of the system and to calculate the VL phase equilibrium compositions. Finally, Matlab is used to generate the 3D Gibbs energy of mixing surfaces for both phases over the whole range of temperatures which facilitates the geometrical interpretation of the vapor-liquid equilibrium.

A novel method is reported, whereby screen-printed electrodes (SPELs) are combined with dispersive liquidliquid microextraction. In-situ ionic liquid (IL) formation was used as an extractant phase in the microextraction technique and proved to be a simple, fast and inexpensive analytical method. This approach uses miniaturized systems both in sample preparation and in the detection stage, helping to develop environmentally friendly analytical methods and portable devices to enable rapid and onsite measurement. The microextraction method is based on a simple metathesis reaction, in which a water-immiscible IL (1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium bis[(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl]imide, [Hmim][NTf2]) is formed from a water-miscible IL (1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride, [Hmim][Cl]) and an ion-exchange reagent (lithium bis[(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl]imide, LiNTf2) in sample solutions. The explosive 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) was used as a model analyte to develop the method. The electrochemical behavior of TNT in [Hmim][NTf2] has been studied in SPELs. The extraction method was first optimized by use of a two-step multivariate optimization strategy, using Plackett–Burman and central composite designs. The method was then evaluated under optimum conditions and a good level of linearity was obtained, with a correlation coefficient of 0.9990. Limits of detection and quantification were 7 μg L−1 and 9 μg L−1, respectively. The repeatability of the proposed method was evaluated at two different spiking levels (20 and 50 μg L−1), and coefficients of variation of 7 % and 5 % (n = 5) were obtained. Tap water and industrial wastewater were selected as real-world water samples to assess the applicability of the method.

A novel approach is presented, whereby gold nanostructured screen-printed carbon electrodes (SPCnAuEs) are combined with in-situ ionic liquid formation dispersive liquidliquid microextraction (in-situ IL-DLLME) and microvolume back-extraction for the determination of mercury in water samples. In-situ IL-DLLME is based on a simple metathesis reaction between a water-miscible IL and a salt to form a water-immiscible IL into sample solution. Mercury complex with ammonium pyrrolidinedithiocarbamate is extracted from sample solution into the water-immiscible IL formed in-situ. Then, an ultrasound-assisted procedure is employed to back-extract the mercury into 10 µL of a 4 M HCl aqueous solution, which is finally analyzed using SPCnAuEs. Sample preparation methodology was optimized using a multivariate optimization strategy. Under optimized conditions, a linear range between 0.5 and 10 µg L−1 was obtained with a correlation coefficient of 0.997 for six calibration points. The limit of detection obtained was 0.2 µg L−1, which is lower than the threshold value established by the Environmental Protection Agency and European Union (i.e., 2 µg L−1 and 1 µg L−1, respectively). The repeatability of the proposed method was evaluated at two different spiking levels (3 and 10 µg L−1) and a coefficient of variation of 13% was obtained in both cases. The performance of the proposed methodology was evaluated in real-world water samples including tap water, bottled water, river water and industrial wastewater. Relative recoveries between 95% and 108% were obtained.

The solubility, density, refractive index, and viscosity data for the ethylene glycol + CsBr + H2O, 1,2-propanediol + CsBr + H2O, and glycerin + CsBr + H2O ternary systems have been determined at (288.15, 298.15, and 308.15) K. In all cases, the solubility of CsBr in aqueous solutions was decreased significantly due to the presence of polyhydric alcohol. The liquid–solid equilibrium experimental data were correlated using the NRTL (nonrandom two-liquid) activity coefficient model, considering nondissociation of the dissolved salt in the liquid phase, and new interaction parameters were estimated. The mean deviations between calculated and experimental compositions were low, showing the good descriptive quality and applicability of the NRTL model. The refractive indices, densities, and viscosities for the unsaturated solutions of the three ternary systems have also been measured at three temperatures. Values for all of the properties were correlated with the salt concentrations and proportions of polyhydric alcohol in the solutions.

The thermodynamic consistency of almost 90 VLE data series, including isothermal and isobaric conditions for systems of both total and partial miscibility in the liquid phase, has been examined by means of the area and point-to-point tests. In addition, the Gibbs energy of mixing function calculated from these experimental data has been inspected, with some rather surprising results: certain data sets exhibiting high dispersion or leading to Gibbs energy of mixing curves inconsistent with the total or partial miscibility of the liquid phase, surprisingly, pass the tests. Several possible inconsistencies in the tests themselves or in their application are discussed. Related to this is a very interesting and ambitious initiative that arose within the NIST organization: the development of an algorithm to assess the quality of experimental VLE data. The present paper questions the applicability of two of the five tests that are combined in the algorithm. It further shows that the deviation of the experimental VLE data from the correlation obtained by a given model, the basis of some point-to-point tests, should not be used to evaluate the quality of these data.

Very different carbon materials have been used as support in the preparation of supported ionic liquid phase samples (SILP). Some of them have been oxidized, either strongly (with ammonium persulfate solution) or weakly (with air at 300 °C, 2 h). The purpose is to establish which properties of the supports (e.g., porosity -volume and type-, surface area, oxygen surface chemistry and morphology) determine the IL adsorption capacity and the stability (immobilization) of the supported IL phase. The ionic liquid used in this work is 1-butyl-3-methyl-imidazolium hexafluorophosphate ([bmim][PF6]). For each support, samples with different amounts of ionic liquid have been prepared. The maximum IL that can be loaded depends mainly on the total pore volume of the supports. For comparable pore volumes, the porosity type and the oxygen surface content have no influence on the IL loading. The supported IL fills most of the pores, leaving some blocked porosity. The stability of the supported IL phase (especially important for its subsequent use in catalysis) has been tested in water under general hydrogenation conditions (60 °C and 10 bar H2). In general, leaching is low but it increases with the amount of IL loaded and with the oxidation treatments of the supports.

Hydrophobic Ti-MCM-41 samples prepared by post-synthesis silylation treatment demonstrate to be highly active and selective catalysts in olefins epoxidation by using organic hydroperoxides as oxidizing agents in liquid phase reaction systems. Epoxide yields show important enhancements with increased silylation degrees of the Ti-mesoporous samples. Catalytic studies are combined and correlated with spectroscopic techniques (e.g. XRD, XANES, UV-Visible, 29Si MAS-NMR) and calorimetric measurements to better understand the changes in the surface chemistry of Ti-MCM-41 samples due to the post-synthesis silylation treatment and to ascertain the role of these trimethylsilyl groups incorporated in olefin epoxidation. In such manner, the effect of the organic moieties on solids, and both water and glycol molecules contents on the catalytic activity and selectivity are analyzed in detail. Results show that the hydrophobicity level of the samples is responsible for the decrease in water adsorption and, consequently, the negligible formation of the non-desired glycol during the catalytic process. Thus, catalyst deactivation by glycol poisoning of Ti active sites is greatly diminished, this increasing catalyst stability and leading to practically quantitative production of the corresponding epoxide. The extended use of these hydrophobic Ti-MCM-41 catalysts together with organic hydroperoxides for the highly efficient and selective epoxidation of natural terpenes is also exemplified.

We have studied the synthesis of palladium nanoparticles over carbon nanotubes (Pd/CNT) and graphene (Pd/G) and we have tested their catalytic performance in the liquid phase chemoselective hydrogenation of para-chloronitrobenzene at room temperature. The catalysts were characterized by N2 adsorption/desorption isotherms, TEM, X-ray diffraction, infrared and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and ICP-OES. The palladium particle size on Pd/G (3.4 nm) and Pd/CNT (2.8 nm) was similar though the deposition was higher on Pd/G. Pd/CNT was more active which can be ascribed to the different surface area and electronic properties of the Pd nanoparticles over CNT, while the selectivity was 100% to the corresponding haloaniline over both catalysts and they were quite stable upon recycling.

In the present work we have studied the effect of carbon supports with different graphitic character (carbon nanotubes, mesoporous graphite and activated carbon) on the catalytic performance of iridium nanoparticles on the liquid phase chemoselective hydrogenation of para-chloronitrobenzene at room temperature. The effect of the oxygen groups was also evaluated by oxidizing a portion of the carbon nanotubes. The Raman and XRD spectra showed that the mesoporous graphite displayed the strongest graphitic character. The characterization of the catalysts by HR-TEM, XPS and TPR-H2, showed that the catalysts had similar particle size and that the catalysts prepared over the previously oxidized support, Ir/CNTox, was not fully reduced. The activity and selectivity achieved with the catalyst Ir/CNT was the best among the samples and the presence of irdium oxide on Ir/CNTox diminished the yield to p-chloroaniline, being the worse catalyst. The reactivity of different isomers was also studied over Ir/CNT and it followed the order m > o > p.
