Rock bolts have failed by Stress Corrosion Cracking (SCC). This paper presents a detailed examination of the fracture surfaces in an attempt to understand the SCC fracture mechanism. The SCC fracture surfaces, studied using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), contained the following different surfaces: Tearing Topography Surface (TTS), Corrugated Irregular Surface (CIS) and Micro Void Coalescence (MVC). TTS was characterised by a ridge pattern independent of the pearlite microstructure, but having a spacing only slightly coarser than the pearlite spacing. CIS was characterised as porous irregular corrugated surfaces joined by rough slopes. MVC found in the studied rock bolts was different to that in samples failed in a pure ductile manner. The MVC observed in rock bolts was more flat and regular than the pure MVC, being attributed to hydrogen embrittling the ductile material near the crack tip. The interface between the different fracture surfaces revealed no evidence of a third mechanism involved in the transition between fracture mechanisms. The microstructure had no effect on the diffusion of hydrogen nor on the fracture mechanisms. The following SCC mechanism is consistent with the fracture surfaces. Hydrogen diffused into the material, reaching a critical concentration level. The thus embrittled material allowed a crack to propagate through the brittle region. The crack was arrested once it propagated outside the brittle region. Once the new crack was formed, corrosion reactions started producing hydrogen that diffused into the material once again. The strain dependence of particle cracking in aluminum alloys A356/357 in the T6 temper has been studied in a range of microstructures produced by varying solidification rate and Mg content, and by chemical (Sr) modification of the eutectic silicon. The damage accumulates linearly with the applied strain for all microstructures, but the rate depends on the secondary dendrite arm spacing and modification state. Large and elongated eutectic silicon particles in the unmodified alloys and large pi-phase (Al9FeMg3Si5) particles in alloy A357 show the greatest tendency to cracking. In alloy A356, cracking of eutectic silicon particles dominates the accumulation of damage while cracking of Fe-rich particles is relatively unimportant. However, in alloy A357, especially with Sr modification, cracking of the large pi-phase intermetallics accounts for the majority of damage at low and intermediate strains but becomes comparable with silicon particle cracking at large strains. Fracture occurs when the volume fraction of cracked particles (eutectic silicon and Fe-rich intermetallics combined) approximates 45 pct of the total particle volume fraction or when the number fraction of cracked particles is about 20 pct. The results are discussed in terms of Weibull statistics and existing models for dispersion hardening.

The age hardening, stress corrosion cracking (SCC) and hydrogen embrittlement (HE) of an Al-Zn-Mg-Cu 7175 alloy were investigated experimentally. There were two peak-aged states during ageing. For ageing at 413 K, the strength of the second peak-aged state was slightly higher than that of the first one, whereas the SCC susceptibility was lower, indicating that it is possible to heat treat 7175 to high strength and simultaneously to have high SCC resistance. The SCC susceptibility increased with increasing Mg segregation at the grain boundaries. Hydrogen embrittlement (HE) increased with increased hydrogen charging and decreased with increasing ageing time for the same hydrogen charging conditions. Computer simulations were carried out of (a) the Mg grain boundary segregation using the embedded atom method and (b) the effect of Mg and H segregation on the grain boundary strength using a quasi-chemical approach. The simulations showed that (a) Mg grain boundary segregation in Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloys is spontaneous, (b) Mg segregation decreases the grain boundary strength, and (c) H embrittles the grain boundary more seriously than does Mg. Therefore, the SCC mechanism of Al-Zn-Mg Cu alloys is attributed to the combination of HE and Mg segregation induced grain boundary embrittlement. (C) 2004 Acta Materialia Inc. Stress corrosion cracks (SCC) had been found in a natural gas transmission pipeline during a dig-up and inspection program. The question was raised as to whether the SCC was active or dormant. This paper describes the resultant investigation to determine if a particular service crack was actively growing. The strategy adopted was to assess the appearance of the fracture surface of the service crack and to compare with expectations from laboratory specimens with active SCC. The conclusions from this study are as follows. To judge whether a crack in the service pipe is active or dormant, it is reasonable to compare the very crack tip of the service crack and a fresh crack in a laboratory sample. If the crack tip of the active laboratory sample is similar to that of the service pipe, it means the crack in the service pipe is likely to be active. From the comparison of the crack tip between the service pipe and the laboratory samples, it appears likely that the cracks in the samples extracted from service were most likely to have been active intergranular stress corrosion cracks. The ACI recommendations for the prevention of cracking of plastic concrete attempt to eliminate such cracking by ensuring that the rate of evaporation from unprotected concrete surfaces does not exceed the estimated rate of bleed water production. The current recommendations, however do not account for the large scatter of the underlying experimental evaporation data nor the effect of altitude on evaporation rate. Ignoring the scatter of the evaporation data frequently leads to an unacceptably high probability that the evaporation rate will exceed the bleed rate. Ignoring the effect of altitude leads to similar high probabilities, but in only a comparatively small number of cases. Simple modifications of the ACI recommendations are suggested that can account for both effects. However; insufficient data on the variability of bleed rates are currently available to allow the scatter of the evaporation data to be accounted for completely.

This review aims to provide a foundation for the safe and effective use of magnesium (Mg) alloys, including practical guidelines for the service use of Mg alloys in the atmosphere and/or in contact with aqueous solutions. This is to provide support for the rapidly increasing use of Mg in industrial applications, particularly in the automobile industry. These guidelines should be firmly based on a critical analysis of our knowledge of SCC based on (1) service experience, (2) laboratory testing and (3) understanding of the mechanism of SCC, as well as based on an understanding of the Mg corrosion mechanism.

This work reports on a critical measurement to understand the intergranular stress corrosion cracking (IGSCC) of pipeline steels: the atom probe field ion microscope (APFIM) measurement of the carbon concentration at a grain boundary (GB). The APFIM measurement was related to the microstructure and to IGSCC observations. The APFIM indicated that the GB carbon concentration of X70 was similar to 10 at% or less, which correlated with a high resistance to IGSCC for X70. (C) 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Plastic cracking of cement mortar and concrete is primarily attributable to desiccation by evaporation from unprotected surfaces. This causes high suctions (negative pressures) to develop in the pore water adjacent to these surfaces. Dissolved salts in the pore water can also contribute significantly to suctions. Quantitative expressions are available for all of the components of the total suction. The development of suctions over time is illustrated by the results of desiccation tests conducted on cement mortars, supplemented by data from the literature. It is shown that ambient conditions conducive to plastic cracking can arise almost anywhere, but that the extremely high suctions that develop in mature cement mortar and concrete do not imply that compression failures should occur A high value of fracture energy is derived from data from the desiccation tests that implies that plastic cracking is characterized by a significant zone of plastic straining or microcracking.

Evaluation of recent data for hydrogen (H) diffusion in magnesium (Mg) yielded a new equation for the diffusion coefficient of H in Mg. This indicates that there can be significant H transport ahead of a stress corrosion crack in Mg at ambient temperature and that H may be involved in the mechanism of stress corrosion cracking in Mg.

Moral guardians, industry protectionists and concerned citizens (each with their own political agendas) had, or many years, lobbied various Ministers of Customs to regulate the offensive material which flooded the local market-the war effectively opened a protectionist climate in which the local publishing industry nourished (Johnson-Woods Pulp Friction). Though westerns dominated at first, science fiction (i.e., futuristic stories, alternative histories, space exploration, time-travel past and future ) soon followed. Within the decaying and yellowed pages, contemporary readers have a glimpse into the culture of the 1950s and, amusing though some of the predictions are, the cultural and social critic gains some understanding of the anxieties and desires of post-World War II Australia.

It is technically feasible for mobile social software such as pairing or ‘matchmaking’ systems to introduce people to others and assist information exchange. However, little is known about the social structure of many mobile communities or why they would want such pairing systems. While engaged in other work determining requirements for a mobile travel assistant we saw a potentially useful application for a pairing system to facilitate the exchange of travel information between backpackers. To explore this area, we designed two studies involving usage of a low-fidelity role prototype of a social pairing system for backpackers. Backpackers rated the utility of different pairing types, and provided feedback on the social implications of being paired based on travel histories. Practical usage of the social network pairing activity and the implications of broader societal usage are discussed.
