Density functional theory calculations were used to investigate the mechanisms of NO-carbon and N2O-carbon reactions. It was the first time that the importance of surface nitrogen groups was addressed in the kinetic behaviors of the NO-carbon reaction. It was found that the off-plane nitrogen groups that are adjacent to the zigzag edge sites and in-plane nitrogen groups that are located on the armchair sites make the bond energy of oxygen desorption even ca. 20% lower than that of the off-plane epoxy group adjacent to zigzag edge sites and in-plane o-quinone oxygen atoms on armchair sites; this may explain the reason why the experimentally obtained activation energy of the NO-carbon reaction is ca. 20% lower than that of the O-2-carbon reaction over 923 K. A higher ratio of oxygen atoms can be formed in the N2O-carbon reaction, because of the lower dissociation energy of N2O, which results in a higher ratio of off-plane epoxy oxygen atoms. The desorption energy of semiquinone with double adjacent off-plane oxygen groups is ca. 20% less than that of semiquinone with only one adjacent off-plane oxygen group. This may be the reason why the activation energy of N2O is also ca. 20% less than that of the O-2-carbon reaction. The new mechanism can also provide a good qualitative comparison for the relative reaction rates of NO-, N2O-, and O-2-carbon reactions. The anisotropic characters of these gas-carbon reactions can also be well explained.

Nitrogen adsorption at 77 K is the current standard means for pore size determination of adsorbent materials. However, nitrogen adsorption reaches limitations when dealing with materials such as molecular sieving carbon with a high degree of ultramicroporosity. In this investigation, methane and carbon dioxide adsorption is explored as a possible alternative to the standard nitrogen probe. Methane and carbon dioxide adsorption equilibria and kinetics are measured in a commercially derived carbon molecular sieve over a range of temperatures. The pore size distribution is determined from the adsorption equilibrium, and the kinetics of adsorption is shown to be Fickian for carbon dioxide and non-Fickian for methane. The non-Fickian response is attributed to transport resistance at the pore mouth experienced by the methane molecules but not by the carbon dioxide molecules. Additionally, the change in the rate of adsorption with loading is characterized by the Darken relation in the case of carbon dioxide diffusion but is greater than that predicted by the Darken relation for methane transport. Furthermore, the proposition of inkbottle-shaped micropores in molecular sieving carbon is supported by the determination of the activation energy for the transport of methane and subsequent sizing of the pore-mouth barrier by molecular potential calculations.

Theoretical calculations (B3LYP/6-311+G(3df,2p)//B3LYP/6-31G*) of the 1,3 migration of NR2 transforming alpha-oxoketenimines 1 to alpha-imidoylketenes 3 and vice versa indicate that this process is a pseudo-pericyclic reaction with a low activation energy (NH2 97 kJ mol(-1), N(CH3)(2) 62 kJ mol(-1)). The oxoketenimines were found to be more stable (by 18-35 kJ mol(-1)) which is in line with experimental observations. The hindered amine rotation in the amide and amidine moieties adjacent to the cumulenes are important in the migration of the NR2 group, as one of the rotation transition states is close to the 1,3 migration pathway. This gives an interesting potential energy surface with a valley-ridge inflection (VRI) between the orthogonal hindered amine rotation and 1,3 migration transition states. The imidoylketene may also undergo ring closure to an azetinone 5; however, this is metastable, and under the conditions that allow the 1,3-migration, the oxoketenimine 1 will be favored. The imine NH E/Z-interconversion of the ketenimine group takes place by inversion and has a low activation barrier (similar to40 kJ mol(-1)). In all the amidines examined the E/Z-interconversion of the imine function was predicted to be by rotation with a high barrier (>80 kJ mol(-1)), in contrast to all other reported imine E/Z-interconversions which are by inversion.

We present here a tractable theory of transport of simple fluids in cylindrical nanopores, which is applicable over a wide range of densities and pore sizes. In the Henry law low-density region the theory considers the trajectories of molecules oscillating between diffuse wall collisions, while at higher densities beyond this region the contribution from viscous flow becomes significant and is included through our recent approach utilizing a local average density model. The model is validated by means of equilibrium as well nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulations of supercritical methane transport in cylindrical silica pores over a wide range of temperature, density, and pore size. The model for the Henry law region is exact and found to yield an excellent match with simulations at all conditions, including the single-file region of very small pore size where it is shown to provide the density-independent collective transport coefficient. It is also shown that in the absence of dispersive interactions the model reduces to the classical Knudsen result, but in the presence of such interactions the latter model drastically overpredicts the transport coefficient. For larger micropores beyond the single-file region the transport coefficient is reduced at high density because of intermolecular interactions and hindrance to particle crossings leading to a large decrease in surface slip that is not well represented by the model. However, for mesopores the transport coefficient increases monotonically with density, over the range studied, and is very well predicted by the theory, though at very high density the contribution from surface slip is slightly overpredicted. It is also seen that the concept of activated diffusion, commonly associated with diffusion in small pores, is fundamentally invalid for smooth pores, and the apparent activation energy is not simply related to the minimum pore potential or the adsorption energy as generally assumed. High-quality nanometer thick ultramicroporous membranes were prepared from silica sol-gel processes and tested for the permeation of binary gas mixtures of He, H-2, CO2, and CH4 across different temperature and partial pressure regimens. Pore size distribution by molecular probing showed that the majority of pore sizes had dimensions below 2.9 Angstrom. In 50:50 binary mixtures, the fluxes of gases increased as a function of temperature, indicating an activated transport mechanism. The ultramicroporous membranes showed high selectivities at 150 degreesC for He/CO2 (30), He/CH4 (93), H-2/CO2 (10), and H-2/CH4 (9) with lower selectivities for CO2/CH4 (5). High activation energies (E-a) were observed for the permeance of 50:50 binary mixtures containing He and H-2 of 22.1-27.5 and 17.6-23.1 kJ.mol(-1), respectively. The E-a for the permeance of the total mixture approached the E-a for the permeance of the molecule with the smaller kinetic diameter (He or H-2).

In liquid-liquid dispersion systems, the dynamic change of the interfacial properties between the two immiscible liquids plays an important role in both the emulsification process and emulsion stabilization. In this paper, experimentally measured dynamic interfacial tensions of 1-chlorobutane in the aqueous solutions of various random copolymers of polyvinyl acetate and polyvinyl alcohol (PVAA) are presented. Theoretical analyses on these results suggest that the adsorption of the polymer molecules is controlled neither by the bulk diffusion process nor the activation energy barrier for the adsorption but the conformation of polymer molecules. Based on the concept of critical concentration of condensation for polymer adsorption, as well as the observation that the rate at which the dynamic interfacial tension changes does not correlate to the PVAA's ability to stabilize a single drop, it is postulated that the main stabilization mechanism for the PVAAs is by steric hindrance, not the Gibbs-Marangoni effect offered by the small molecule surfactants.

The diffusion of hexane, heptane, octane, and decane in nanoporous MCM-41 silica at various temperatures is investigated by the zero-length-column method. The diffusion coefficients are derived by a complete-time-range analysis of desorption curves at different purge flow rates and temperatures. The results show that the calculated low-coverage diffusivity values decrease monotonically, and the derived Henry's law constants increase, as the carbon number of paraffins increases. The study reveals that transport is strongly influenced by intracrystalline diffusion and dominated by the sorbate-sorbent interaction. The diffusion activation energy and adsorption isosteric heat at zero loading increase monotonically with the carbon number of linear paraffins, but their ratio is essentially constant for each adsorbate compound.

A dual resistance model with distribution of either barrier or pore diffusional activation energy is proposed in this work for gas transport in carbon molecular sieve (CMS) micropores. This is a novel approach in which the equilibrium is homogeneous, but the kinetics is heterogeneous. The model seems to provide a possible explanation for the concentration dependence of the thermodynamically corrected barrier and pore diffusion coefficients observed in previous studies from this laboratory on gas diffusion in CMS.(1.2) The energy distribution is assumed to follow the gamma distribution function. It is shown that the energy distribution model can fully capture the behavior described by the empirical model established in earlier studies to account for the concentration dependence of thermodynamically corrected barrier and pore diffusion coefficients. A methodology is proposed for extracting energy distribution parameters, and it is further shown that the extracted energy distribution parameters can effectively predict integral uptake and column breakthrough profiles over a wide range of operating pressures.

We investigate here the diffusion of n-decane in nanoporous MCM-41 silicas with pore diameters between 3.0 and 4.3 nm, and at various temperatures and purge flow rates, by the Zero Length Column method. A complete-time-range analysis of desorption curves is used to derive the diffusion coefficient, and the effect of pore size, purge flow rate and temperature on the diffusion character is systematically studied. The results show that the calculated low-coverage diffusivity values are strongly dependent on temperature but only weakly dependent on pore size. The study reveals that transport is controlled by intracrystalline diffusion and dominated by sorbate-sorbent interaction, with the experimental isosteric heat matching the potential energy of flat-lying n-decane molecules on the surface, determined using a united atom model. The diffusion activation energy and adsorption isosteric heat at zero loading for the different pore size MCM-41 samples vary in a narrow range respectively, and their ratio is essentially constant over the pore size range studied. The study shows that the ZLC method is an effective tool to investigate the diffusion kinetics of hydrocarbons in mesoporous MCM-41 materials. (c) 2005 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Lines of transgenic tobacco have been generated that are transformed with either the wild-type peanut peroxidase prxPNC2 cDNA, driven by the CaMV3 5S promoter (designated 35S::prxPNC2-WT) or a mutated PNC2 cDNA in which the asparagine residue (Asn(189)) associated with the point of glycan attachment (Asn(189)) has been replaced with alanine (designated 35S::prxPNC2-M). PCR, using genomic DNA as template, has confirmed the integration of the 35S::prxPNC2-WT and 35::prxPNC2-M constructs into the tobacco genome, and western analysis using anti-PNC2 antibodies has revealed that the prxPNC2-WT protein product (PNC2-WT) accumulates with a molecular mass of 34,670 Da, while the prxPNC2-M protein product (PNC2-M) accumulates with a molecular mass of 32,600 Da. Activity assays have shown that both PNC2-WT and PNC2-M proteins accumulate preferentially in the ionically-bound cell wall fraction, with a significantly higher relative accumulation of the PNC2-WT isoenzyme in the ionically-bound fraction when compared with the PNC2-M isoform. Kinetic analysis of the partially purified PNC2-WT isozyme revealed an affinity constant (apparent K-m) of 11.2 mM for the reductor substrate guaiacol and 1.29 mM for H2O2, while values of 11.9 mM and 1.12 mM were determined for the PNC2-M isozyme. A higher Arrenhius activation energy (E,,) was determined for the PNC2-M isozyme (22.9 kJ mol(-1)), when compared with the PNC2-WT isozyme (17.6 kJ mol(-1)), and enzyme assays have determined that the absence of the glycan influences the thermostability of the PNC2-M isozyme. These results are discussed with respect to the proposed roles of N-linked glycans attached to plant peroxidases. (c) 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The crystallization behavior and crystallization kinetics Of (CU60Zr30Ti10)(99)Sn-1 bulk metallic glass was studied by X-ray diffractometry and differential scanning calorimetry. It was found that a two-stage crystallization took place during continuous heating of the bulk metallic glass. Both the glass transition temperature T-g and the crystallization peak temperatures T-p displayed a strong dependence on the heating rate. The activation energy was determined by the Kissinger analysis method. In the first-stage of the crystallization, the transformation of the bulk metallic glass to the phase one occurred with an activation energy of 386 kJ/mol; in the second-stage, the formation of the phase two took place at an activation energy of 381 kJ/mol.

Investigation of the secondary nucleation threshold (SNT) of alpha-glucose monohydrate was conducted in aqueous solutions in agitated batch systems for the temperature range 10 to 40 degrees C. The width of the SNT decreased as the induction time increased and was found to be temperature independent when supersaturation was based on the absolute concentration driving force. Nonnucleating seeded batch bulk crystallizations of this sugar were performed isothermally in the same temperature range as the SNT experiments, and within the SNT region to avoid nucleation. The growth kinetics were found to be linearly dependent on the supersaturation of total glucose in the system when the mutarotation reaction is not rate limiting. The growth rate constant increases with increasing temperature and follows an Arrhenius relationship with an activation energy of 50 +/- 2 kJ/mol. alpha-Glucose monohydrate shows significant crystal growth rate dispersion (GRD). For the seeds used, the 95% range of growth rates was within a factor of 6 for seeds with a narrow particle size distribution, and 8 for seeds with a wider distribution that was used at 25 degrees C. The results will be used to model the significance of the mutarotation reaction on the overall crystallization rate of D-glucose in industrial crystallization.

This article provides a review of the recent theory of transport in nanopores developed in the author's laboratory. In particular the influence of fluid-solid interactions on the transport coefficient is examined, showing that such interactions reduce the value of the coefficient by almost an order of magnitude in comparison to the Knudsen theory for non-interacting systems. The activation energy and potential energy barriers for diffusion in smooth pores with a one-dimensional potential energy profile are also discussed, indicating the inadequacy of the commonly used assumption of proportionality between the activation energy and heat of adsorption or the minimum pore potential energy. A further feature affected by fluid-solid interactions is the nature of the reflection of fluid molecules colliding with a pore wall surface, varying from being nearly specular - such as in carbon nanotubes - to nearly diffuse for amorphous solids. Diffuse reflection leads to momentum loss and reduced transport coefficients. However, fluid-solid interactions do not affect the transport coefficient in the single-file diffusion regime when the surface reflection is diffuse, and the transport coefficient in this case is largely independent of the adsorbed density.

Thermosetting blends of an aliphatic epoxy resin and a hydroxyl-functionalized hyperbranched polymer (HBP), aliphatic hyperbranched polyester Boltorn H40, were prepared using 4,4'-diaminodiphenylmethane (DDM) as the curing agent. The phase behavior and morphology of the DDM-cured epoxy/HBP blends with HBP content up to 40 wt% were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The cured epoxy/HBP blends are immiscible and exhibit two separate glass transitions, as revealed by DMA. The SEM observation showed that there exist two phases in the cured blends, which is an epoxy-rich phase and an HBP-rich phase, which is responsible for the two separate glass transitions. The phase morphology was observed to be dependent on the blend composition. For the blends with HBP content up to 10 wt%, discrete HBP domains are dispersed in the continuous cured epoxy matrix, whereas the cured blend with 40 wt% HBP exhibits a combined morphology of connected globules and bicominuous phase structure. Porous epoxy thermosets with continuous open structures on the order of 100-300 nm were formed after the HBP-rich phase was extracted with solvent from the cured blend with 40 wt% HBP. The DSC study showed that the curing rate is not obviously affected in the epoxy/HBP blends with HBP content up to 40 wt %. The activation energy values obtained are not remarkably changed in the blends; the addition of HBP to epoxy resin thus does not change the mechanism of cure reaction of epoxy resin with DDM.
