Broccoli is a vegetable crop of increasing importance in Australia, particularly in south-east Queensland and farmers need to maintain a regular supply of good quality broccoli to meet the expanding market. A predictive model of ontogeny, incorporating climatic data including frost risk, would enable farmers to predict harvest maturity date and select appropriate cultivar – sowing date combinations. To develop procedures for predicting ontogeny, yield and quality, field studies using three cultivars, ‘Fiesta’, ‘Greenbelt’ and ‘Marathon’, were sown on eight dates from 11 March to 22 May 1997, and grown under natural and extended (16 h) photoperiods at the University of Queensland, Gatton Campus. Cultivar, rather than the environment, mainly determined head quality attributes of head shape and branching angle. Yield and quality were not influenced by photoperiod. A better understanding of genotype and environmental interactions will help farmers optimise yield and quality, by matching cultivars with time of sowing. The estimated base and optimum temperature for broccoli development were 0°C and 20 °C, respectively, and were consistent across cultivars, but thermal time requirements for phenological intervals were cultivar specific. Differences in thermal time requirement from floral initiation to harvest maturity between cultivars were small and of little importance, but differences in thermal time requirement from emergence to floral initiation were large. Sensitivity to photoperiod and solar radiation was low in the three cultivars used. This research has produced models to assist broccoli farmers in crop scheduling and cultivar selection in south-east Queensland.

The bulk of the world's goat population is found in South-East Asia and Africa, where goats are the major source of meat production. Unfortunately, lack of an organized goat meat industry and marketing structure in developing countries is primarily responsible for their poor export earnings compared to those in developed countries such as Australia and New Zealand. Goat meat is leaner than meat from other domestic red meat species as well as being comparable in terms of its nutritional constituents. Furthermore, there are few, if any, religious or cultural taboos limiting the consumption of goat meat. Development of a carcass grading system and a suitable infrastructure in developing countries are some of the key requirements needed to establish a sustainable goat meat industry in the world. With an increase in demand by consumers for low-fat red meat alternatives, the future of the goat meat industry looks promising.

This case study reports the post-harvest qualities of conventionally versus organically grown banana fruit from nearby plantations in the Dominican Republic. The comparison involved six repeated harvests over the transition from cooler to hotter seasons. Green mature Cavendish 'Grande Naine' banana fruit were shipped to the UK. They were triggered to ripen with ethylene gas and kept under simulated retail conditions. Fruit mass, colour, firmness and flavour parameters were measured every second day over 12 d of shelf life. Sensory comparisons were conducted on four of the six harvest times. Significant differences (P<0.05) in measured quality attributes between conventionally and organically grown fruit were few and marginal. Moreover, any differences were inconsistent across harvest-times and during shelf life. Thus, organically and conventionally grown product had almost identical qualities. Sensory comparison confirmed that there was no flavour difference. This case study provides data that challenge a general perception that organic bananas have better flavour than conventional bananas.

Background: Doctors referring patients to consultant physicians seek reply letters which both educate and assist in ongoing patient management. Highly desirable attributes in specialist letters include clearly stated and justified: (i) diagnostic formulations, (ii) management regimens, (iii) use of clinical investigations, (iv) prog-nostic statements, (v) contingency plans and (vi) follow-up arrangements. Aim: To explicitly evaluate the quality of reply letters for new patients referred to clinics at a tertiary teaching hospital. Methods: Letters were sampled from outpatient clinics of 10 different medical specialties at Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane, Australia. Reply letters for new patient referrals between 1 August 2000 and 31 October 2000 were retrieved, from which data were abstracted to calculate the proportion of letters satisfying prespecified quality attributes. Results: Of 297 new patient referrals, reply letters were retrieved for 204 (69%). Of these, 147 (72%) referrals were accompanied by a referral letter, mostly (113/147; 77%) from general practitioners. For 120 referrals involving diagnostic issues, 69 (56%) letters stated a diagnostic formulation. Of 114 letters recommending further clinical investigations, 61 (53%) described a rationale for such testing. In 125 cases where therapy was a key issue, 83 (66%) letters recommended changes to current treatment for which reasons were specified in 46 (55%) cases, and contingency plans provided in 13 (16%). Prognosis was mentioned in only 18 (9%) cases. Follow-up arrangements were detailed in 123 (60%) letters. Assessments of patient understanding and likely adherence to therapy were stated in less than 15% of -letters. Conclusions: Opportunities exist for improving quality of consultant physicians' reply letters in terms of greater use of problem lists, contingency plans, prognostic statements and patient-centred assessments, as well as more frequent enunciation of consultants' reasoning behind requests for further tests and changes to current management. Use of structured letter templates may facilitate more consistent inclusion of key information to referring doctors.

Patients with advanced cancer frequently express positive attitudes and can be unduly optimistic about the potential benefits of treatment. In order to evaluate an illusory domain in the context of advanced cancer, we developed a scale of will to live and characterized the beliefs that patients held about the curability of their cancer, and how committed they were to using alternative treatments. A measure of quality of life was used as the dependent variable in order to assess the association between these attributes. After a preliminary exploration confirmed the presence of an illusory domain, these concepts were prospectively tested in 149 ambulant patients with advanced cancer who attended for palliative systemic treatment, radiation treatment or supportive care. The scale of global quality of life was reliable (Cronbach's alpha coefficient 0.72). The distribution of the scores of will to live was skewed, with no respondent scoring poorly, and the scale was reliable (Cronbach's alpha coefficient 0.82). The scale of belief in curability showed diverse beliefs. In some cases, there was a discrepancy between respondents' beliefs in curability and what they believed to be the report by their doctors. Chemical engineering education is challenged around the world by demands and rapid changes encompassing a wide range of technical and social drivers. Graduates must be prepared for practice in increasingly diverse workplace environments in which generic or transferable attributes such as communication and teamwork together with technical excellence are mandated by prospective employers and society at large. If academe is to successfully deliver on these graduate attributes, effective curriculum design needs to include appropriate educational processes as well as course content. Conventional teacher centred approaches, stand-alone courses and retro-fitted remedial modules have not delivered the desired outcomes. Development of the broader spectrum of attributes is more likely when students are engaged with realistic and relevant experiences that demand the integration and practice of these attributes in contexts that the students find meaningful. This paper describes and evaluates The University of Queensland's Project Centred Curriculum in Chemical Engineering (PCC), a programme-wide approach to meeting these requirements. PCC strategically integrates project-based learning with more traditional instruction. Data collected shows improved levels of student attainment of generic skills with institutional and nationally benchmarked indicators showing significant increases in student perceptions of teaching quality, and overall satisfaction with the undergraduate experience. Endorsements from Australian academic, professional and industry bodies also support the approach as more effectively aligning engineering education with professional practice requirements.
