Precursor scavenging of the resistive grain-boundary phase in 8 mol% yttria-stabilized zirconia: Effect of trace concentrations of SiO2

The influence that trace concentrations Of SiO2 have on improving grain-boundary conduction via precursor scavenging using additional heat treatment at 1200 degreesC for 40 h before sintering was investigated. At a SiO2-impurity level (SIL) less than or equal to 160 ppm by weight, the grain-boundary resistivity (p(gb)) decreased to 20% of its value, while no improvement in grain-boundary conduction was found at a SIL greater than or equal to 310 ppm. The correlation between the resistance per unit grain-boundary area, p(gb), and average grain size indicated that the inhomogeneous distribution of the siliceous phase in the sample with a SIL greater than or equal to 310 ppm. hampered the scavenging reaction.

Integrable anisotropic spin-ladder model

We present an integrable spin-ladder model, which possesses a free parameter besides the rung coupling J. Wang's system based on the SU(4) symmetry can be obtained as a special case. The model is exactly solvable by means of the Bethe ansatz method. We determine the dependence on the anisotropy parameter of the phase transition between gapped and gapless spin excitations and present the phase diagram. Finally, we show that the model is a special case of a more general Hamiltonian with three free parameters.

The strain-driven pyrochlore to "defect fluorite" phase transition in rare earth sesquioxide stabilized cubic zirconias

The relationship between the ordering characteristic of the pyrochlore structure type and that characteristic of the defect fluorite structure type (immediately on either side of two phase regions separating the two structure types) in a range of rare eath sesquioxide stabilized cubic zirconias is investigated via electron diffraction and imaging. Systematic structural change as a function of composition and relative size of the constituent metal ions is highlighted and a multi-q to single-q = 1/2 [111]* model proposed for the observed pyrochlore to defect fluorite phase transition. Strain introduced into the close-packed {111} metal ion planes of the defect fluorite average structure by the local cation and oxygen vacancy distribution is pointed to as the likely origin of the observed behavior. Integrable open boundary conditions for the Bariev model of three coupled X Y spin chains

The integrable open-boundary conditions for the Bariev model of three coupled one-dimensional XY spin chains are studied in the framework of the boundary quantum inverse scattering method. Three kinds of diagonal boundary K-matrices leading to nine classes of possible choices of boundary fields are found and the corresponding integrable boundary terms are presented explicitly. Using a cartographic modeling language to manipulate spectral satellite imagery

Land related information about the Earth's surface is commonIJ found in two forms: (1) map infornlation and (2) satellite image da ta. Satellite imagery provides a good visual picture of what is on the ground but complex image processing is required to interpret features in an image scene. Increasingly, methods are being sought to integrate the knowledge embodied in mop information into the interpretation task, or, alternatively, to bypass interpretation and perform biophysical modeling directly on derived data sources. A cartographic modeling language, as a generic map analysis package, is suggested as a means to integrate geographical knowledge and imagery in a process-oriented view of the Earth. Specialized cartographic models may be developed by users, which incorporate mapping information in performing land classification. In addition, a cartographic modeling language may be enhanced with operators suited to processing remotely sensed imagery. We demonstrate the usefulness of a cartographic modeling language for pre-processing satellite imagery, and define two nerv cartographic operators that evaluate image neighborhoods as post-processing operations to interpret thematic map values. The language and operators are demonstrated with an example image classification task.

Scavenging of siliceous grain-boundary phase of 8-mol%-ytterbia-stabilized zirconia without additive

The grain-boundary conductivity (sigma (gb),) of 8-mol%-ytterbiastabilized zirconia increased markedly with heat treatment between 1000 degrees and 1300 degreesC with a slow heating rate (0.1 degreesC/min) before sintering. The extent of the sigma (gb) improvement was the same or larger than that via Al2O3 addition. The heat treatment did not affect the grain-interior conduction when sintered at 1600 degreesC, while Al2O3-derived scavenging significantly did, given the larger increment of total conductivity in the heat-treated sample. The formation of a silicon-containing phase in a discrete form was suggested as a possible route of scavenging the resistive phase from the correlation between average grain size and sigma (gb).

Quantum dynamics of spin polarized optoelectronic processes

We study the quantum dynamics of the emission of multimodal polarized light in light emitting devices (LED) due to spin polarized carriers injection. An XPS study of an isomorphous trivalent lanthanoid series

X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy has been used to investigate the core electron binding energies within an isomorphous series of lanthanoid complexes; [LnL(1)] where Ln=La-Lu (except Pm) and H3L is the heptadentate ligand 2,2',2-tris(salicylideneimino)triethylamine. This study also examines spin-orbit coupling of the trivalent lanthanoids bound to this organic ligand and addresses the issue of satellite peaks in the spectra. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. Tetrahydrofolates are greatly stabilized by binding to bovine milk folate-binding protein

The dietary supply of folates and their measurement are both affected, potentially, by the instability of some folates. Labile folates appear to be stabilized by binding to folate-binding protein (FBP); this paper reports measurements of that stabilization. The degradation rates of the very labile tetrahydrofolate (H(4)folate) and moderately labile 5-methyltetrahydrofolate (5-CH(3)H(4)folate) were measured with the compounds free or bound to either soluble or immobilized bovine milk FBP. Complexation increased stability from 2- to > 1000-fold, depending on buffer and temperature conditions. H(4)folate at 4degreesC and pH 6.7 appeared to be quite stable for > 100 d when bound to soluble FBP but had a half-life of < 1 h when free. Stabilization of milk folates may be a role of FBP and would improve the bioavailability of milk folate to newborns and other consumers.

Characterization of [Fe(AMN3S3sarH)]3+ - a rigorously low-spin iron(II) complex

The iron(II) complex [Fe(AMN(3)S(3)sarH)](ClO4)(3).3H(2)O (AMN(3)S(3)sarH = 8-ammonio-1-methyl-3,13,16-trithia-6,10,19-triazabicyclo[6.6.6]icosane) has been synthesized and characterized by single crystal structure and spectroscopic methods. The Fe(II)-S(thiaether) bond lengths are short, indicative of a large degree of metal-ligand orbital mixing (pi-acceptor character) of the thiaether ligand. Precursor scavenging of resistive grain-boundary phase in 8 mol % ytterbia-stabilized zirconia

The grain-boundary conduction of 8 mol % ytterbia-stabilized zirconia (8YbSZ) was improved markedly by precursor scavenging via the two-stage sintering process. The most significant increase in the grain-boundary conductivity was found when the sample, whose conductivity was higher than that via Al2O3-derived scavenging, was heat-treated at 1250degreesC for greater than or equal to 20 h. The formation of a stable Si-containing phase such as ZrSiO4 during the first-stage heat-treatment was suggested as one probable scavenging route from the optimal heat-treatment temperature (HTT), long duration time (>20 h) at HTT, and the stability of the formed phase up to sintering temperatures (1500degrees C).
