This article presents information on the August 2003 issue of the "Journal of Hospitality & Tourism." One of the aims of the journal is to provide a link between the hospitality, tourism, leisure, travel and event industries and academia. As in previous years, the author had attempted to achieve this aim by using the mid-year issue of the journal to disseminate research from recent academic conferences to a wider audience. An understandable criticism of academic research, and the usefulness of the information generated, centres around the length of time research results take to filter through to industry. Academic conferences have traditionally been the forum where university academics present findings from recently completed research or present a synopsis of work completed to date in the form of work in progress abstracts. The focus of this issue is to develop a closer relationship between industry and academia through the publication of papers from two recent hospitality and tourism research conferences

The article presents an introduction to the vol. 11 of the "Journal of Hospitality and Tourism Management." The author feels the need for a platform to publish articles and contemporary research in the areas of hospitality, travel, tourism, leisure and event management. The article presents brief information about some of the articles published in the issue. The first article is by Tim Lockyer entitled "Weekend Accommodation-The Challenge: What are the Guests Looking for?," it reports on the means of improving weekend occupancy in hotels. The second article is by Tim Lockyer and M. Tsai titled "Dimensions of Chinese Culture Values in Relation to the Hotel Dining Experience." In this article the authors examine their dining experience in a 5-star hotel in Taiwan. Another article is "Predicting Job Retention of Hourly Employees in the Lodging Industry," by Ady Milman and Peter Ricci. This article focuses on the data of hourly paid employees working in small or medium sized hotels in the United States.

Festivals are emerging worldwide as a growing and vibrant sector of the tourism and leisure industries and are seen to have significant economic, socio-cultural, and political impacts on the destination area and host groups. While there are a number of scholars working on developing valid models to determine the economic impact of festivals on host communities, there are few studies published which focus on the social, cultural, and/or political impacts of festivals and events. The purpose of this paper, therefore, is to determine the degree to which festival attendance facilitates the augmentation of social capital by drawing upon the literature from various disciplines in order to conceptualize the synergy between festivals and social capital. To achieve this, the paper will (1) examine the relevant literature on the key characteristics of ‘festivals’ as distinct from other events and (2) investigate the current uses of the notion of ‘social capital’ within the academic debates in a variety of disciplinary contexts

The interest in experiential and embodied aspects of brand and other product usage is under-represented in tourism orientated research, which generally falls to develop a contextualised understanding of the relationships between products and consumers, and within this in particular, considerations of individuality and self, embodiment, emotion and sensation. Aiming to `reverse the causality' (Lannon and Cooper 1983:201) of consumption focused tourism research, in this paper, I draw on the tourism experiences of Audrey, a participant in a larger study to reveal how, rather than just `consuming', tourism consumers interpret the meaning and values in a wide range of products and objects, weaving individual, rich, sensory, embodied experiences which are informed by the interactions and relationships with activities and products, and by their own personalities, past experiences and aspirations. Audrey is highly conscious of her self and of elsewhereness, hers are fragile, self-indulgent, tactile experiences which offer the freedom to step out of everyday life roles into other time and situational spheres where environment, objects and sensory stimulation are paramount. The education of international students in Australian universities has grown significantly over recent years, with Australia now having the highest ratio of international students to domestic students among the major English-speaking destinations popular with international students. While there is a variety of research that examines the learning experiences of international students, little research has been conducted that examines the impact that international students have on their domestic counterparts. This paper reports on research that solicits the perceived advantages and disadvantages held by 301 domestic students, who are sharing their educational experience with international students studying hospitality and tourism management. The study reveals that there is a sizable proportion of domestic students (28%) who consider that there are too many international students on campus; that domestic and international students do not readily mix and it also highlights the fact that racist incidents occur. It is suggested that institutions wishing to increase their number of international students must take into consideration the feelings and concerns of their domestic students.
