In mixed signal integrated circuits noise from the digital circuitry can upset the sensitive analogue circuitry. The Faraday cage structure reported here is based on the unique ground plane SOI technology developed some of the authors. The suppression of crosstalk achieved is an order of magnitude greater than that previously published for frequencies up to 10 GHz. The significance of the technology will be even greater as the operating frequency is increased. This collaborative EPSRC project was judge as tending to outstanding.

The losses within the substrate of an RF IC can have significant effect on performance in a mixed signal application. in order to model substrate coupling accurately, it is represented by an RC network to account for both resistive and dielectric losses at high frequency (> 1 GHz). A small-signal equivalent circuit model of an RF IC inclusive of substrate parasitic effect is analysed in terms of its y-parameters and an extraction procedure for substrate parameters has been developed. By coupling the extracted substrate parameters along with extrinsic resistances associated with gate, source and drain, a standard BSIM3 model has been extended for RF applications. The new model exhibits a significant improvement in prediction of output reflection coefficient S-22 in the frequency range from 1 to 10 GHz in device mode of operation and for a low noise amplifier (LNA) at 2.4 GHz. A cellular imaging system, optimized for unstained cells seeded onto a thin substrate, is under development. This system will be a component of the endstation for the microbeam cell-irradiation facility at the University of Surrey. Previous irradiation experiments at the Gray Cancer Institute (GCI) have used Mylar film to support the cells [Folkard, M., Prise, K., Schettino, G., Shao, C., Gilchrist, S., Vojnovic, B., 2005. New insights into the cellular response to radiation using microbeams. Nucl. Instrum. Methods B 231, 189-194]. Although suitable for fluorescence microscopy, the Mylar often creates excessive optical noise when used with non-fluorescent microscopy. A variety of substrates are being investigated to provide appropriate optical clarity, cell adhesion, and radiation attenuation. This paper reports on our investigations to date.

This paper proposes a substrate integrated waveguide
(SIW) cavity-based method that is compliant with
ground-signal–ground (GSG) probing technology for dielectric
characterization of printed circuit board materials at millimeter
wavelengths. This paper presents the theory necessary to retrieve
dielectric parameters from the resonant characteristics of SIW
cavities with particular attention placed on the coupling scheme
and means for obtaining the unloaded resonant frequency. Different
sets of samples are designed and measured to address the
influence of the manufacturing process on the method. Material
parameters are extracted at - and -band from measured data
with the effect of surface roughness of the circuit metallization
taken into account.

The role of long-range strain interactions on domain wall dynamics is explored through macroscopic and local measurements of nonlinear behavior in mechanically clamped and released polycrystalline lead zirconate-titanate (PZT) films. Released films show a dramatic change in the global dielectric nonlinearity and its frequency dependence as a function of mechanical clamping. Furthermore, we observe a transition from strong clustering of the nonlinear response for the clamped case to almost uniform nonlinearity for the released film. This behavior is ascribed to increased mobility of domain walls. These results suggest the dominant role of collective strain interactions mediated by the local and global mechanical boundary conditions on the domain wall dynamics. The work presented in this Letter demonstrates that measurements on clamped films may considerably underestimate the piezoelectric coefficients and coupling constants of released structures used in microelectromechanical systems, energy harvesting systems, and microrobots.

The implementation of a dipole antenna co-designed and monolithically integrated with a low noise amplifier (LNA) on low resistivity Si substrate (20 Omega . cm) manufactured in 0.35 mu m commercial SiGe HBT process with f(T)/f(max) of 170 GHz and 250 GHz is investigated theoretically and experimentally. An air gap is introduced between the chip and a reflective ground plane, leading to substantial improvements in efficiency and gain. Moreover, conjugate matching conditions between the antenna and the LNA are exploited, enhancing power transfer between without any additional matching circuit. A prototype is fabricated and tested to validate the performance. The measured 10-dB gain of the standalone LNA is centered at 58 GHz with a die size of 0.7 mm x 0.6 mm including all pads. The simulated results showed antenna directivity of 5.1 dBi with efficiency higher than 70%. After optimization, the co-designed LNA-Antenna chip with a die size of 3 mm x 2.8 mm was characterized in anechoic chamber environment. A maximum gain of higher than 12 dB was obtained.

Hepatocyte growth factor-regulated tyrosine kinase substrate (Hrs) is a prominent substrate for activated tyrosine kinase receptors that has been proposed to play a role in endosomal membrane trafficking. The protein contains a FYVE domain, which specifically binds to the lipid phosphatidylinositol (PI) 3-phosphate (PI 3-P). We show that this interaction is required both for correct localization of the protein to endosomes that only partially coincides with early endosomal autoantigen 1 and for efficient tyrosine phosphorylation of the protein in response to epidermal growth factor stimulation. Treatment with wortmannin reveals that Hrs phosphorylation also requires PI 3-kinase activity, which is necessary to generate the PI 3-P required for localization. We have used both hypertonic media and expression of a dominant-negative form of dynamin (K44A) to inhibit endocytosis; under which conditions, receptor stimulation fails to elicit phosphorylation of Hrs. Our results provide a clear example of the coupling of a signal transduction pathway to endocytosis, from which we propose that activated receptor (or associated factor) must be delivered to the appropriate endocytic compartment in order for Hrs phosphorylation to occur.
