We present in this work a comparative study on density and transport properties, such as the conductivity (sigma), viscosity (eta) and self-diffusion coefficients (D), for electrolytes based on the lithium hexafluorophosphate, LiPF6; or on the lithium tris(pentafluoroethane)-trifluorophosphate, LiFAP dissolved in a binary mixture of ethylene carbonate (EC) and dimethylcarbonate (DMC) (50:50 wt%). For each electrolyte, the temperature dependence on transport properties over a temperature range from 10 to 80 degrees C and 20 to 70 degrees C for viscosity and conductivity, respectively, exhibits a non-Arrhenius behavior. However, this dependence is correctly correlated by using the Vogel-Tamman-Fulcher (VTF) type fitting equation. In each case, the best-fit parameters, such as the pseudo activation energy and ideal glass transition temperature were then extracted. The self-diffusion coefficients (D) of the Li+ cation and PF6- or FAP(-) anions species, in each studied electrolyte, were then independently determined by observing Li-3, F-19 and P-31 nuclei with the pulsed-gradient spin-echo (PGSE) NMR technique over the same temperature range from 20 to 80 degrees C. Results show that even if the diffusion of the lithium cation is quite similar in both electrolytes, the anions diffusion differs notably. In the case of the LiPF6-based electrolyte, for example at T approximate to 75 degrees C (high temperature), the self-diffusion coefficients of Li+ cations in solution (D (Li+)approximate to 5 x 10(-19) m(2) s(-1)) is 1.6 times smaller than that of PF6- anions (D (PF6-) = 8.5 x 10(-19) m(2) s(-1)), whereas in the case of the LiFAP-based electrolyte, FAP(-) anions diffuse at same rate as the Li+ cations (D (FAP(-)) = 5 x 10(-1) m(2) s(-1)). Based on these experimental results, the transport mobility of ions were then investigated through Stokes-Einstein and Nernst-Einstein equations to determine the transport number of lithium t(Li)(+), effective radius of solvated Li+ and of PF6- and FAP(-) anions, and the degree of dissociation of these lithium salts in the selected EC/DMC (50:50 wt%) mixture over a the temperature range from 20 to 80 degrees C. This study demonstrates the conflicting nature of the requirements and the advantage of the well-balanced properties as ionic mobility and dissociation constant of the selected electrolytes. In this paper, we have reported the CO2 solubility in different pure alkyl carbonate solvents (EC, DMC, EMC, DEC) and their binary mixtures as EC/DMC, EC/EMC, and EC/DEC and for electrolytes [solvent + lithium salt] LiX (X = LiPF6, LiTFSI, or LiFAP) as a function of the temperature and salt concentration. To understand the parameters that influence the structure of the solvents and their ability to dissolve CO2, through the addition of a salt, we first analyzed the viscosities of EC/DMC + LiX mixtures by means of a modified Jones–Dole equation. The results were discussed considering the order or disorder introduced by the salt into the solvent organization and ion solvation sphere by calculating the effective solute ion radius, rs. On the basis of these results, the analysis of the CO2 solubility variations with the salt addition was then evaluated and discussed by determining specific ion parameters Hi by using the Setchenov coefficients in solution. This study showed that the CO2 solubility has been affected by the shape, charge density, and size of the ions, which influence the structuring of the solvents through the addition of a salt and the type of solvation of the ions.

Dioxygenase-catalysed trioxygenation of alkyl phenyl sulfides and alkyl benzenes yields enantiopure cis-dihydrodiol sulfoxides and triols respectively; naphthalene cis-dihydrodiol dehydrogenase-catalysed aromatisation of these diastereoisomers gives enantiopure catechols of either configuration.

The accuracy and reliability of popular density functional approximations for the compounds giving origin to room temperature ionic liquids have been assessed by computing the T=0 K crystal structure of several 1-alkyl-3-methyl-imidazolium salts. Two prototypical exchange-correlation approximations have been considered, i.e., the local density approximation (LDA) and one gradient corrected scheme [PBE-GGA, Phys. Rev. Lett. 77, 3865 (1996)]. Comparison with low-temperature x-ray diffraction data shows that the equilibrium volume predicted by either approximations is affected by large errors, nearly equal in magnitude (~10%), and of opposite sign. In both cases the error can be traced to a poor description of the intermolecular interactions, while the intramolecular structure is fairly well reproduced by LDA and PBE-GGA. The PBE-GGA optimization of atomic positions within the experimental unit cell provides results in good agreement with the x-ray structure. The correct system volume can also be restored by supplementing PBE-GGA with empirical dispersion terms reproducing the r-6 attractive tail of the van der Waals interactions.

Raman spectra of the ionic liquids, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate ([C(4)mim][PF(6)]), 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ([C(6)mim]Cl), and 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate ([C(6)mim][PF(6)]), and binary mixtures thereof, have been assigned using ab initio MP2 calculations. The previously reported anti and gauche forms of the [C(4)mim](+) cation have been observed, and this study reveals this to be a general feature of the long-chain I-alkyl derivatives. Analysis of mixtures Of [C(6)mim]Cl and [C(6)mim][PF(6)] has provided information on the nature of the hydrogen bonding between the imidazolium headgroup and the anions, and the invariance of the essentially 50:50 mixture of the predominant conformers informs on the nature of glass formation in these systems.

The speeds of sound u in, densities ? and refractive indices nD of some homologous series, such as n-alkyl ethanoates, n-alkyl propionates, methyl alkanoates, ethyl alkanoates, dialkyl malonates, and alkyl haloalkanoates, were measured in the temperature range from 298.15 to 333.15 K. Molar volume V, isentropic and isothermal compressibilities ?S and ?T, molar refraction Rm, Eykman’s constant Cm, molecular radius r, Rao’s molar function R, thermal expansion coefficient a, thermal pressure coefficient ?, and Flory’s characteristic parameters image, P*, V*, and T* have been calculated from the measured experimental data. Applicability of Rao theory and Flory–Patterson–Pandey (FPP) theory have been examined and discussed for these alkanoates.

Isentropic compressibilities ?S, excess isentropic compressibilities image, excess molar volumes VE, viscosity deviations ??, and excess Gibbs energy of activation of viscous flow ?G*E for nine binary mixtures of C4H8O with CCl4, CHCl3, CHCl2CHCl2, 1-C6H13Cl, 1-C6H13Br, CH3CO2CH3, CH3CO2C2H5, CH3CO2C4H9, and CH3CO2C5H11 at 303.15 K have been derived from experimental densities ?, speeds of sound u, refractive indexes nD and viscosities ?. The limiting values of excess partial molar volumes of C4H8O at infinite dilution image in different solvents have been estimated. The results obtained for dynamic viscosity of binary mixtures were used to test the semi-empirical relations of Grunberg–Nissan, Tamura–Kurata, Hind–McLaughlin–Ubbelohde, Katti–Chaudhri, McAllister, Heric, and Auslaender. Finally, the experimental refractive indexes were compared with the predicted results for Lorentz–Lorenz, Dale–Gladstone, Eykman, Arago–Boit, Newton, Oster, Heller, and Wiener equations.

The properties of the 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium salt of the dinuclear mu(4)-(O,O,O',O'-ethane-1,2-dioato)bis[bis-(nitrato-O,O)dioxouranate(VI)] anion have been investigated using electrochemistry, single-crystal X-ray crystallography, and extended X-ray absorbance fine structure spectroscopy: the anion structures from these last two techniques are in excellent agreement with each other. Electrochemical reduction of the complex leads to the a two-electron metal-centered reduction of U(VI) to U(IV), and the production Of UO2, or a complex containing UO2. Under normal conditions, this leads to the coating of the electrode with a passivating film. The presence of volatile organic compounds in the ionic liquids 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium nitrate (where the 1-alkyl chain was methyl, ethyl, propyl, butyl, pentyl, hexyl, dodecyl, hexadecyl, or octadecyl) during the oxidative dissolution of uranium(IV) oxide led to the formation of a yellow precipitate. To understand the effect of the cation upon the composition and structure of the precipitates, 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium salts of a number of nitratodioxouranate(VI) complexes were synthesized and then analyzed using X-ray crystallography. It was demonstrated that the length of the 1-alkyl chain played an important role, not only in the composition of the complex salt, but also in the synthesis of dinuclear anions containing the bridging mu(4)-(O,O,O',O'-ethane-1,2-dioato), or oxalato, ligand, by protecting it from further oxidation.

The structure of the 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium salts of the dinuclear mu(4)-(O,O,O',O'-ethane-1,2-dioato)-bis[bis(nitrato-O,O)dioxouranate(VI)] anion have been investigated using single crystal X-ray crystallography. In addition, EXAFS and electrochemical studies have been performed on the [C(4)mim](+) salt which is formed following the oxidative dissolution of uranium(IV) oxide in [C(4)mim][NO3]. EXAFS analysis of the solution following UO2 dissolution indicates a mixture of uranyl nitrate and mu(4)-(O,O,O',O'-ethane-1,2-dioato)-bis[bis(nitrato-O,O)dioxouranate(VI)] anions are formed.

X-ray reflectivity measurements in air of thin films of 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium salts in the liquid, liquid crystalline and solid states supported on Si( 111) are described. The films show Bragg features in both liquid crystalline and solid phases, but only after an initial annealing cycle. Kiessig fringes are observed only for the 1-octadecyl-3-methyl-imidazolium hexafluorophosphate films and, following analysis using Parratt32, a bi-layer model is proposed whereby the molecules are orientated with ionic groups at both salt-air and salt-silicon interfaces.

1-Alkyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrachloropalladate(ii) salts ([C-n-mim](2)[PdCl4], n = 10, 12, 14, 16, 18) containing a single, linear alkyl-chain substituent on the cation have been synthesised and their behaviour characterised by differential scanning calorimetry, polarising optical microscopy and small-angle X-ray scattering. The salts display thermotropic polymorphism, exhibiting both crystal-crystal transitions and, for n = 14-18, the formation of a thermotropic smectic liquid crystalline phase.

1-Alkyl-n-cyanopyridinium and 1-alkyl-n-(trifluoromethyl) pyridinium salts have been synthesised and characterised in order to compare the effects of different electron-withdrawing functional groups on their ability to form ionic liquids. The presence of the electron-withdrawing nitrile or trifluoromethyl substituent on the pyridinium ring leads to salts with higher melting points than with the corresponding 1-alkylpyridinium or 1-alkylpicolinium cations. Solid-state structures were determined by single crystal X-ray crystallography for seven salts; 1-methyl-4-cyanopyridinium methylsulfate, and 1-methyl-3-cyanopyridinium, 1-methyl-4-cyanopyridinium, 1-ethyl-2-cyanopyridinium, 1-ethyl-3-cyanopyridinium, 1-ethyl-4-cyanopyridinium and 1-ethyl-4-(trifluormethyl) pyridinium bis{(trifluoromethyl) sulfonyl} imide, and show the effects of ring-substitution position on hydrogen-bonding in the solid-state and on melting points.
