An analysis of radiative transfer effects present in the Fe XV ion stage of solar and stellar coronal plasmas provides a general explanation of line radiation intensity enhancement above the optically thin limit. Full linearization radiation transfer is compared with the escape factor method and found to be in good agreement at the lower column densities. An angular study of the enhancement shows that symmetry factors are of great importance. This gives a possible reason for the indeterminate status of opacity in relation to coronal lines of distant stellar sources, where only emission integrated across the whole surface is detected.

Hardware implementations of arithmetic operators using signed digit arithmetic have lost some of their earlier popularity. However, SD is revisited and used to realise an efficient radix-16 generic multiplier, which has particular potential for low-power implementation. The SD multiplier algorithm reduces the number of partial products to as much as 1/4, and in initial tests reduces the estimated power consumption to only about 50% of that of the Booth multiplier. It is different from other previous high-radix methods in that it employs a novel method to generate its partial products with zero arithmetic logic.

Single crystals of mercuric bis(N-imino-methyl-formamidate), Hg(Imf)(2), were obtained from aqueous solutions of 1,2,4-triazole and Hg(NO3)(2)center dot 2H(2)O. The crystal structure [monoclinic, P2(1)/c (no. 14), a = 499.6(2), b = 1051.2(4), c = 711.1(3) pm, beta = 117.55(1)degrees, Z = 2, R, for 890 reflections with I-0 > 2 sigma(I-0): 0.0369] contains linear centrosymmetric Hg(Imf)(2) molecules with Hg-N distances of only 203.5(7)pm. Two plus two intra- and intermolecular nitrogen atoms add to an effective coordination number of 6.
