Reductive cyclisation of ail E-vinyl bromide with ail allylic acetate proceeds under palladium catalysis 10 give the 8-dehydropumiliotoxin skeleton, a potential advanced precursor to 8-deoxypumiliotoxin alkaloids. Control of the stereochemistry of the E-vinyl bromide precursor is achieved readily using the Kogen or Bruckner bromophosphonate reagents and the reductive cyclisation proceeds with retention of the vinyl bromide stereochemistry. The mechanism for the cyclisation involves an in situ conversion of the allylic acetate to ail allyl stannane followed by ail intramolecular Stille-type coupling.

A new, wide ranging, synthetically powerful, catalytic tandem cyclisation-anion capture process is proposed which depends on the rate of cyclisation of an organopalladium specifies (RPdX) onto a proximate alkene or diene being significantly faster than anion exchange and reductive elimination in the sequence RPdX --> RPdY --> RY + Pd(0). The catalytic cyclisation - anion capture sequence is illustrated for hydride capture by a wide variety of substrates giving rise to fused- and spiro-, carbo- and hetero-cyclic systems, regio- and stereo-specifically.

A catalyst system comprising 10 mol % (Pd(OAc) and 20 mol % PPh3 effects the cyclisation of aryl halides onto proximate alkenes via 5-, 6-, and 7-exo-trig, and 7-endo-trig processes giving a variety of bridged-ring carbo- and hetero-cycles in excellent yield. Double bond isomerisation in the product is rarely encountered and may be suppressed by the addition of Tl(1) salts. One example of diastereospecific bis-cyclisation is given and the crystal structure of 1-aza-2-sulphonyl-3,4-benzobicyclo[3.2.1]nona-6-ene is reported.

The hydrodechlorination of chlorobenzene over supported palladium catalysts has been studied. The palladium catalysts: deactivate as the reaction proceeds due to the HCl formed as by-product. The effect of the addition of sodium compounds has been analysed for the neutralisation of HCl. When NaOH was added to the reaction mixture, no beneficial effect was observed due to the detrimental effect of the alkaline medium on the textural and metallic properties of the catalysts. Doping the support with NaOH prior to impregnation with the metal precursor leads (after calcination and reduction) to catalysts with better activity and tolerance to deactivation, especially those obtained when using PdCl2 as the metal precursor. Low metal dispersion and the capture of chloride by forming NaCl are the: main factors contributing to the: improved catalytic properties. Finally, doping the catalysts with NaOH or NaNO3, after reduction of the metal precursor leads to a moderate increase in initial activity and final conversion, although NaOH impregnation also gave rise to support corrosion and metal dispersion modification. For the first time, the hydrogenation/hydrogenolysis of a range of disulfides has been achieved over a supported palladium catalyst using hydrogen under relatively benign conditions. These unexpected results demonstrate that it is possible to avoid the poisoning of the catalyst by either the nitrogen-containing groups or the sulfur species, allowing both efficient reaction and recycling of the catalyst under the proper conditions (e.g., at low temperatures). A slight loss in activity was found on recycling; however, the catalyst activity can be recovered using hydrogen pretreatment. The reaction mechanism for the hydrogenolysis and hydrogenation of ortho-, meta-, and para-dinitrodiphenyldisulfide to the corresponding aminothiophenol has been elucidated. Density functional theory calculations were used to investigate the adsorption mode of the dinitrodiphenyldisulfides; a clear dependence on adsorption geometry was found regarding whether the molecule is cleaved at the S-S bond before the reduction of the nitro group or vice versa. This study demonstrates the versatility of these catalysts for the hydrogenation/hydrogenolysis of sulfur-containing molecules, which normally are considered poisons, and will extend their use to a new family of substrates. Electron deficient active sites in Pd catalysts, either as films or on supports, are deliberately generated by calcining in O-2 at high temperature followed by the mildest possible reduction (with the reaction mixture itself), and are manifested by a marked shift from multiple to simple exchange in the cyclopentane/D-2 probe reaction.

CO and C3H6 oxidation have been carried out in the absence and presence of water over a Pd/Al2O3catalyst. It is clear that water promotes CO and, as a consequence, C3H6oxidation takes place at muchlower temperatures compared with the dry feed. The significant increase in the catalyst’s activity withrespect to CO oxidation is not simply associated with changes in surface concentration as a result ofcompetitive adsorption effects. Utilising18O2as the reactant allows the pathways whereby the oxidationdue to gaseous dioxygen and where the water activates the CO and C3H6to be distinguished. In thepresence of water, the predominant pathway is via water activation with C16O2and C16O18O being themajor species formed and oxidation with dioxygen plays a secondary role. The importance of wateractivation is further supported by the significant decrease in its effect when using D2O versus H2O.

Palladium has a significant track record as a catalyst for a range of oxidation reactions and it has been explored for the selective oxidation of alcohols for many years. This chapter focuses on the two main types of aerobic Pd catalysts: heterogeneous and ligand-modulated systems. In the case of heterogeneous systems, the mechanistic understanding of these systems and the use of in situ and operando techniques to obtain this knowledge are discussed. The current state-of-the-art is also summarized in terms of catalytic performance and substrate scope for heterogeneous Pd-based catalysts. In terms of ligand-modulated systems, leading examples of molecular Pd(ii) catalysts which undergo direct O2 coupled turnover are highlighted. The catalyst performance for such catalysts is exemplified and mechanistic understanding for these molecular systems is discussed.

The Horiuti-Polanyi mechanism has been considered to be universal for explaining the mechanisms of hydrogenation reactions in heterogeneous catalysis for several decades. In this work, we examine this mechanism for the hydrogenation of acrolein, the simplest alpha,beta-unsaturated aldehyde, in gold-based systems as well as some other metals using extensive first-principles calculations. It is found that a non-Horiuti-Polanyi mechanism is favored in some cases. Furthermore, the physical origin and trend of this mechanism are revealed and discussed regarding the geometrical and electronic effects, which will have a significant influence on current understandings on heterogeneous catalytic hydrogenation reactions and the future catalyst design for these reactions.

The ammoxidation of ethanol is investigated as a renewable process for the production of acetonitrile from a bio-feedstock. Palladium catalysts are shown to be active and very selective (>99%) to this reaction at moderate to low temperatures (150-240 °C), with acetonitrile yields considered a function of Pd morphology. Further investigations reveal that the stability of these catalysts is influenced by an unselective product, and that any deactivation observed is reversible. Interpretation of this deactivation allows operating conditions to be defined for the stable, high yielding production of acetonitrile from ethanol.

The selective heterogeneous catalytic reduction of phenyl acetylene to styrene over palladium supported on calcium carbonate is reported in both an ionic liquid and a molecular solvent. By using a rotating disc reactor in conjunction with results from a stirred tank reactor it is possible, for the first time, to disentangle the mass transfer contributions in the ionic liquid system. For both heptane and 1-butyl-3-methyl imidazolium bis{(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl}imide, the reaction in the rotating disc reactor is dominated by reaction in the entrained film on the disc compared with very limited reaction in the bulk liquid. The lower reaction rate obtained in the ionic liquid compared with the organic solvent is shown to be due to the slow transport of the hydrogen dissolved in the liquid. It is clear from the results presented herein that, although the hydrodynamics of similar reactors used for biological treatment of wastewater are well understood, on using a more viscous fluid and higher rotation speeds necessary for fine chemical catalysis these simple relationships breakdown.

Palladium clusters have been deposited on the surface of a Au(111) electrode with the tip of a scanning tunnelling microscope. The distance over which the tip was moved towards the surface has a decisive influence on the properties of the clusters: the larger this distance, the larger the generated clusters, and the more stable they are. These findings are supported by computer simulations, which further suggest that the larger clusters contain a sizable amount of gold, which enhances their stability. Dissolution of the clusters occurs from the edges rather than layer by layer.
