There is a great need to design functional bioactive substitute materials capable of surviving harsh and diverse conditions within the human body. Calcium-phosphate ceramics, in particular hydroxyapatite are well established substitute materials for orthopaedic and dental applications. The aim of this study was to develop a bioceramic from alga origins suitable for bone tissue application. This was achieved by a novel synthesis technique using ambient pressure at a low temperature of 100 degrees C in a highly alkaline environment. The algae was characterised using SEM, BET, XRD and Raman Spectroscopy to determine its physiochemical properties at each stage. The results confirmed the successful conversion of mineralised red alga to hydroxyapatite, by way of this low-pressure hydrothermal process. Furthermore, the synthesised hydroxyapatite maintained the unique micro-porous structure of the original algae, which is considered beneficial in bone repair applications. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V. The electron dynamics in the low-pressure operation regime ($«$ 5 Pa) of a neon capacitively coupled plasma is investigated using phase-resolved optical emission spectroscopy. Plasma ionization and sustainment mechanisms are governed by the expanding and contracting sheath and complex wave–particle interactions. Electrons are energized through the advancing and retreating electric field of the RF sheath. The associated interaction of energetic sheath electrons with thermal bulk plasma electrons drives a two-stream instability also dissipating power in the plasma.

Plasma ionization in the low-pressure operation regime ( $«$ 5 Pa) of RF capacitively coupled plasmas (CCPs) is governed by a complex interplay of various mechanisms, such as field reversal, sheath expansion, and wave–particle interactions. In a previous paper, it was shown that experimental observations in a hydrogen CCP operated at 13.56 MHz are qualitatively well described in a 1-D symmetrical particle-in-cell (PIC) simulation. In this paper, a spherical asymmetrical PIC simulation that is closer to the conditions of the highly asymmetrical experimental device is used to simulate a low-pressure neon CCP operated at 2 MHz. The results show a similar behavior, with pronounced ionization through field reversal, sheath expansion, and wave–particle interactions, and can be exploited for more accurate quantitative comparisons with experimental observations.

Experimental values for the carbon dioxide solubility in eight pure electrolyte solvents for lithium ion batteries – such as ethylene carbonate (EC), propylene carbonate (PC), dimethyl carbonate (DMC), ethyl methyl carbonate (EMC), diethyl carbonate (DEC), ?-butyrolactone (?BL), ethyl acetate (EA) and methyl propionate (MP) – are reported as a function of temperature from (283 to 353) K and atmospheric pressure. Based on experimental solubility data, the Henry’s law constant of the carbon dioxide in these solvents was then deduced and compared with reported values from the literature, as well as with those predicted by using COSMO-RS methodology within COSMOthermX software and those calculated by the Peng–Robinson equation of state implemented into Aspen plus. From this work, it appears that the CO2 solubility is higher in linear carbonates (such as DMC, EMC, DEC) than in cyclic ones (EC, PC, ?BL). Furthermore, the highest CO2 solubility was obtained in MP and EA solvents, which are comparable to the solubility values reported in classical ionicliquids. The precision and accuracy of the experimental values, considered as the per cent of the relative average absolute deviations of the Henry’s law constants from appropriate smoothing equations and from literature values, are close to (1% and 15%), respectively. From the variation of the Henry’s law constants with temperature, the partial molar thermodynamic functions of dissolution such as the standard Gibbs free energy, the enthalpy, and the entropy are calculated, as well as the mixing enthalpy of the solvent with CO2 in its hypothetical liquid state.

Optical emission spectra from a low-pressure Ar plasma were studied with high spatial resolution. It has been shown that the intensity ratios of Ar lines excited through metastable levels to those excited directly from the ground state are sensitive to the shape of electron energy distribution function. From these measurements, important information on the spatial variation of plasma parameters can be obtained. (C) 1999 American Institute of Physics. [S0003-6951(99)01629-0].

Experimental values for the solubility of carbon dioxide, ethane, methane, oxygen, nitrogen, hydrogen, argon and carbon monoxide in 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate, [bmim][PF6] - a room temperature ionic liquid - are reported as a function of temperature between 283 and 343 K and at pressures close to atmospheric. Carbon dioxide is the most soluble and hydrogen is the least soluble of the gases studied with mole fraction solubilities of the order of 10-2 and 10-4, respectively. All the mole fraction solubilities decrease with temperature except for hydrogen for which a maximum is observed at temperatures close to 310 K. From the variation of solubility, expressed as Henry's law constants, with temperature, the partial molar thermodynamic functions of solvation such as the standard Gibbs energy, the enthalpy, and the entropy are calculated. The precision of the experimental data, considered as the average absolute deviation of the Henry's law constants from appropriate smoothing equations, is better than ±1%. © 2005 Elsevier B.V. Densities and viscosities of the ionic liquid 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium octylsulfate, [C4C1Im][C8SO4] were measured as a function of temperature between 313 K and 395 K. Solubilities of hydrogen and carbon dioxide were determined, between 283 K and 343 K, and at pressures close to atmospheric in [C4C1Im][C 8SO4] and in another ionic liquid based on the alkylsulfate anion-1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium ethylsulfate, [C 2C1Im][C2SO4]. Density and viscosity were measured using a vibrating tube densimeter from Anton Paar and a rheometer from Rheometrics Scientific with accuracies of 10-3 g cm -3 and 1%, respectively. Solubilities were obtained using an isochoric saturation technique and, from the variation of solubility with temperature, the partial molar thermodynamic functions of solvation, such as the standard Gibbs energy, the enthalpy, and the entropy, are calculated. The precision of the experimental data, considered as the average absolute deviation of the Henry's law constants from appropriate smoothing equations, is better than ±1%. © The Royal Society of Chemistry.

We present in this study the effect of nature and concentration of lithium salt, such as the lithium hexafluorophosphate, LiPF6; lithium tris(pentafluoroethane)-trifluorurophosphate LiFAP; lithium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide, LiTFSI, on the CO2 solubility in four electrolytes for lithium ion batteries based on pure solvent that include ethylene carbonate (EC), dimethyl carbonate (DMC), ethyl methyl carbonate (EMC), diethyl carbonate (DEC), as well as, in the EC:DMC, EC:EMC and EC:DEC (50:50) wt.% binary mixtures as a function of temperature from (283 to 353) K and atmospheric pressure. Based on experimental solubility values, the Henry’s law constant of the carbon dioxide in these solutions with the presence or absence of lithium salt was then deduced and compared with reported values from the literature, as well as with those predicted by using COSMO-RS methodology within COSMOThermX software. From this study, it appears that the addition of 1 mol · dm-3 LiPF6 salt in alkylcarbonate solvents decreases their CO2 capture capacity. By using the same experimental conditions, an opposite CO2 solubility trend was generally observed in the case of the addition of LiFAP or LiTFSI salts in these solutions. Additionally, in all solutions investigated during this work, the CO2 solubility is greater in electrolytes containing the LiFAP salt, followed by those based on the LiTFSI case. The precision and accuracy of the experimental data reported therein, which are close to (1 and 15)%, respectively. From the variation of the Henry’s law constant with temperature, the partial molar thermodynamic functions of dissolution such as the standard Gibbs energy, the enthalpy, and the entropy, as well as the mixing enthalpy of the solvent with CO2 in its hypothetical liquid state were calculated. Finally, a quantitative analysis of the CO2 solubility evolution was carried out in the EC:DMC (50:50) wt.% binary mixture as the function of the LiPF6 or LiTFSI concentration in solution to elucidate how ionic species modify the CO2 solubility in alkylcarbonates-based Li-ion electrolytes by investigating the salting effects at T = 298.15 K and atmospheric pressure.

Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) are among the most exciting materials discovered recently, attracting particular attention for their gas-adsorption and -storage properties. Certain MOFs show considerable structural flexibility in response to various stimuli. Although there are several examples of 'breathing' MOFs, in which structural changes occur without any bond breaking, examples of transformations in which several bonds are broken and made are much rarer. In this paper we demonstrate how a flexible MOF, Cu-2(OH)(C8H3O7S)(H2O)center dot 2H(2)O, can be synthesized by careful choice of the organic linker ligand. The flexibility can be controlled by addition of a supplementary coordinating molecule, which increases the thermal stability of the solid sufficiently for direct imaging with electron microscopy to be possible. We also demonstrate that the MOF shows unprecedented low-pressure selectivity towards nitric oxide through a coordination-driven gating mechanism. The chemical control over these behaviours offers new possibilities for the synthesis of MOFs with unusual and potentially exploitable properties.

The demand for richer multimedia services, multifunctional portable devices and high data rates can only been visioned due to the improvement in semiconductor technology. Unfortunately, sub-90 nm process nodes uncover the nanometer Pandora-box exposing the barriers of technology scaling-parameter variations, that threaten the correct operation of circuits, and increased energy consumption, that limits the operational lifetime of today's systems. The contradictory design requirements for low-power and system robustness, is one of the most challenging design problems of today. The design efforts are further complicated due to the heterogeneous types of designs ( logic, memory, mixed-signal) that are included in today's complex systems and are characterized by different design requirements. This paper presents an overview of techniques at various levels of design abstraction that lead to low power and variation aware logic, memory and mixed-signal circuits and can potentially assist in meeting the strict power budgets and yield/quality requirements of future systems.

The methane solubility in five pure electrolyte solvents and one binary solvent mixture for lithium ion batteries – such as ethylene carbonate (EC), propylene carbonate (PC), dimethyl carbonate (DMC), ethyl methyl carbonate (EMC), diethyl carbonate (DEC) and the (50:50 wt%) mixture of EC:DMC was studied experimentally at pressures close to atmospheric and as a function of temperature between (280 and 343) K by using an isochoric saturation technique. Based on experimental solubility data, the Henry’s law constant of the methane in these solutions were then deduced and compared together and with those predicted by using COSMO-RS methodology within COSMOthermX software. From this study, it appears that the methane solubility in each pure solvent decreases with the temperature and increases in the following order: EC < PC < EC:EMC (50:50 wt%) < DMC < EMC < DEC, showing that this increases with the van der Walls force in solution. Additionally, in all investigated EC:DMC (50:50 wt%) + 1 mol · dm−3 of lithium salt electrolytes, the methane solubility decreases also with the temperature and the methane solubility is higher in the electrolyte containing the LiFAP salt, followed by that based on the LiTFSI one. From the variation of the Henry’s law constants with the temperature, the partial molar thermodynamic functions of solvation, such as the standard Gibbs free energy, the enthalpy, and the entropy where then calculated, as well as the mixing enthalpy of the solvent with methane in its hypothetical liquid state. Finally, the effect of the gas structure on their solubility in selected solutions was discussed by comparing methane solubility data reported in the present work with carbon dioxide solubility data available in the same solvents or mixtures to discern the more harmful gas generated during the degradation of the electrolyte, which limits the battery lifetime.

The complex dynamics of ionization and excitation mechanisms in capacitively coupled radio-frequency plasmas is discussed for single- and dual-frequency operations in low-pressure and atmospheric pressure plasmas. Electrons are energized through the dynamics of electric fields in the vicinity of the plasma boundary sheaths. Distinctly different power dissipation mechanisms can either co-exist or initiate mode transitions exhibiting characteristic spatio-temporal ionization structures. Phase resolved optical emission spectroscopy, in combination with adequate modelling of the population dynamics of excited states, and numerical simulations reveal dissipation associated with sheath expansion, sheath collapse, transient electron avalanches and wave–particle interactions. In dual-frequency systems the relative phase between the two frequency components provides additional strategies to tailor the plasma dynamics.
