Polyacetylenes of the falcarinol type such as falcarinol and falcarindiol naturally occur in plants of the Apiaceae family, mainly carrots and parsnips. In extracts of newly harvested carrots and parsnips, their levels vary between 20 and 300 mg/kg fresh weight and depend on agronomic factors, in particular the cultivar type. With increasing evidence of their in vitro bioactivity, the retention of these heat-sensitive compounds is desirable during handling, processing, and storage of carrots and parsnips. Quantification of these compounds is usually performed using reverse-phase chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry or other detection methods after appropriate solvent extraction. During minimal processing most losses occur during peeling of the carrots due to the higher distribution of polyacetylenes in the vegetable skin. Heat processing results in reduction of polyacetylene levels, whereas in the case of non-thermal processing, it is mainly dependent on the method employed. The levels of polyacetylenes are rather stable during short-term storage. There are some general guidelines to ensure higher retention of polyacetylene.

Virgin olive oil is a high quality natural product obtained only by physical means. In addition to triacylglycerols it contains nutritionally important polar and non-polar antioxidant phenols and other bioactive ingredients. The polar fraction is a complex mixture of phenolic acids, simple phenols, derivatives of the glycosides oleuropein and ligstroside, lignans, and flavonoids. These compounds contribute significantly to the stability, flavor, and biological value of virgin olive. In the various stages of production, during storage and in the culinary uses, polar phenols and other valuable bioactive ingredients may be damaged. Oxidation, photo-oxidation, enzymic hydrolysis and heating at frying temperatures have a serious adverse effect. Due to the biological importance of the oil and its unique character, analytical methods have been developed to evaluate antioxidant activity or analyse complex phenol mixtures. These are based on radical scavenging assays and chromatographic techniques. Hyphenated methods are also used including liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry and liquid chromatography-nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy.

Tomato is the second most widely grown vegetable crop across the globe and it is one of widely cultivated crops in Sri Lanka. However, tomato industry in Sri Lanka facing a problem of high postharvest loss (54%) during the glut coupled with heavy revenue loss to the country by importing processed products. The aim of this work is to develop shelf-stable tomato product with maximum quality characteristics using high pressure processing (HPP). Tomato juice with altered and unaltered pH was processed using HPP at 600 MPa for 1 min after blanching (90 oC/2 min). As a control tomato juice was subjected to thermal processing (TP) at 95 oC /20 min. Processed samples were stored under 20oC and 28oC for 9 month period and analysed for total viable count (TVC) and instrumental colour (L, a, b) value at 0,1,2 3, and 4 week and 2, 3, 6 and 9 months interval. The raw juice sample had initial 6.69 log10 CFU/ml and both TP and HPP caused a more than 4.69 log10 reduction in the TVC of juice and microbial numbers remained low throughout the storage period even at 3 months after storage irrespective of the storage temperature. Both TP and HPP treated samples had the redness ⤘a value’ of 14.44-17.15 just after processing and showed non-significant reduction with storage in all the treatments after 3 months. The storage study results and discussed in relation to the end goal and compared with the literature.

This paper presents a novel analysis of the utilisation of small grid scale energy storage to mitigate negative system operational impacts due to high penetrations of wind power. This was investigated by artificially lowering the minimum stable generation level of a gas thermal generating unit coupled to a storage device over a five hour storage charging window using a unit commitment and economic dispatch model. The key findings of the analysis were a 0.18% reduction in wind curtailment, a 2.35 MW/min reduction in the ramping rate required to be met by all generators in the test system during a representative period and a total generation cost reduction of €6.5 million.

Samples of fine-grained channel bed sediment and overbank floodplain deposits were collected along the main channels of the Rivers Aire (and its main tributary, the River Calder) and Swale, in Yorkshire, UK, in order to investigate downstream changes in the storage and deposition of heavy metals (Cr, Cu, Pb, Zn), total P and the sum of selected PCB congeners, and to estimate the total storage of these contaminants within the main channels and floodplains of these river systems. Downstream trends in the contaminant content of the <63 μm fraction of channel bed and floodplain sediment in the study rivers are controlled mainly by the location of the main sources of the contaminants, which varies between rivers. In the Rivers Aire and Calder, the contaminant content of the <63 μm fraction of channel bed and floodplain sediment generally increases in a downstream direction, reflecting the location of the main urban and industrialized areas in the middle and lower parts of the basin. In the River Swale, the concentrations of most of the contaminants examined are approximately constant along the length of the river, due to the relatively unpolluted nature of this river. However, the Pb and Zn content of fine channel bed sediment decreases downstream, due to the location of historic metal mines in the headwaters of this river, and the effect of downstream dilution with uncontaminated sediment. The magnitude and spatial variation of contaminant storage and deposition on channel beds and floodplains are also controlled by the amount of <63 μm sediment stored on the channel bed and deposited on the floodplain during overbank events. Consequently, contaminant deposition and storage are strongly influenced by the surface area of the floodplain and channel bed. Contaminant storage on the channel beds of the study rivers is, therefore, generally greatest in the middle and lower reaches of the rivers, since channel width increases downstream. Comparisons of the estimates of total storage of specific contaminants on the channel beds of the main channel systems of the study rivers with the annual contaminant flux at the catchment outlets indicate that channel storage represents <3% of the outlet flux and is, therefore, of limited importance in regulating that flux. Similar comparisons between the annual deposition flux of specific contaminants to the floodplains of the study rivers and the annual contaminant flux at the catchment outlet, emphasise the potential importance of floodplain deposition as a conveyance loss. In the case of the River Aire the floodplain deposition flux is equivalent to between ca. 2% (PCBs) and 36% (Pb) of the outlet flux. With the exception of PCBs, for which the value is ≅0, the equivalent values for the River Swale range between 18% (P) and 95% (Pb). The study emphasises that knowledge of the fine-grained sediment delivery system operating in a river basin is an essential prerequisite for understanding the transport and storage of sediment-associated contaminants in river systems and that conveyance losses associated with floodplain deposition exert an important control on downstream contaminant fluxes and the fate of such contaminants. © 2003 Elsevier Science Ltd. A novel strategy for the controlled synthesis of 2D MoS<inf>2</inf>/C hybrid nanosheets consisting of the alternative layer-by-layer interoverlapped single-layer MoS<inf>2</inf> and mesoporous carbon (m-C) is demonstrated. Such special hybrid nanosheets with a maximized MoS<inf>2</inf>/m-C interface contact show very good performance for lithium-ion batteries in terms of high reversible capacity, excellent rate capability, and outstanding cycling stability.

The effect of different pressure levels (500 and 600. MPa for 1. min at ambient temperature) on lasagne ready meal as a means of increasing the safety and shelf life during storage at refrigeration (4. °C) and abuse temperature (8. °C) was investigated. High-pressure processing (500 and 600. MPa for 1. min) was able to significantly reduce the total aerobic and lactic acid bacteria counts and prolong the microbiological shelf life of lasagne at both refrigeration and abuse temperatures. Pressure at 600. MPa was a useful tool to reduce the safety risks associated with Staphylococcus aureus and Listeria monocytogenes. However, abuse storage temperature facilitated the recovery of L. monocytogenes towards the end of storage. Organoleptic evaluation revealed that HPP did not negatively influence the quality attributes of lasagne and prolonged its organoleptic shelf life. HPP treatment can serve as a useful additional step to enhance safety and increase the shelf life of multicomponent ready meals, such as lasagne. Industrial relevance: The ready meals sector of the food industry has been experiencing increasing growth in the past years. This comprehensive study explored the effects of HPP on a very popular multicomponent ready meal i.e., lasagne after treatment and during storage. The results showed that HPP can be successfully applied to lasagne ready meals to decrease the risk from S. aureus and L. monocytogenes and also significantly prolong its shelf life without affecting its organoleptic properties. The utilisation of HPP by the industry can significantly increase safety and also provide the opportunity for this product to reach markets further away.

We used glycine betaine (5–20% w/v) for blanching green peas (100°C, 60 s), and their subsequent freezing and storage (–20°C, 90 days). Blanching after the addition of glycine betaine at ≥10% (w/v) followed by a 90 day storage period which resulted in the most desirable outcome: higher vitamin C levels, a superior green color, enhanced organoleptic quality and texture, and improved retention of peroxidase and lipoxygenase activity relative to control peas (no glycine betaine added). Microscopic characterizations of control and treated peas revealed that glycine betaine acts as a cryoprotectant which maintains cellular integrity. Glycine betaine (10% w/v) could be used commercially for production of frozen peas with better quality attributes.
