The aim of this paper is to demonstrate the applicability and the effectiveness of a computationally demanding stereo matching algorithm in different lowcost and low-complexity embedded devices, by focusing on the analysis of timing and image quality performances. Various optimizations have been implemented to allow its deployment on specific hardware architectures while decreasing memory and processing time requirements: (1) reduction of color channel information and resolution for input images, (2) low-level software optimizations such as parallel computation, replacement of function calls or loop unrolling, (3) reduction of redundant data structures and internal data representation. The feasibility of a stereovision system on a low cost platform is evaluated by using standard datasets and images taken from Infra-Red (IR) cameras. Analysis of the resulting disparity map accuracy with respect to a full-size dataset is performed as well as the testing of suboptimal solutions

Amphibian skin has proved repeatedly to be a largely untapped source of bioactive peptides and this is especially true of members of the Phyllomedusinae subfamily of frogs native to South and Central America. Tryptophyllins are a group of peptides mainly found in the skin of members of this genus. In this study, a novel tryptophyllin (TPH) type 3 peptide, named AcT-3, has been isolated and structurally-characterised from the skin secretion and lyophilised skin extract of the red-eye leaf frog, Agalychnis callidryas. The peptide was identified in and purified from the skin secretion by reverse-phase HPLC. MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry and MS/MS fragmentation sequencing established its primary structure as: pGlu-Gly-Lys-Pro-Tyr-Trp-Pro-Pro-Pro-Phe-Leu-Pro-Glu, with a non-protonated molecular mass of 1538.19Da. The mature peptide possessed the canonical N-terminal pGlu residue that arises from post-translational modification of a Gln residue. The deduced open-reading frame consisted of 63 amino acid residues encoding a highly-conserved signal peptide of approximately 22 amino acid residues, an intervening acidic spacer peptide domain, a single AcT-3 encoding domain and a C terminal processing site. A synthetic replicate of AcT-3 was found to antagonise the effect of BK on rat tail artery smooth muscle and to contract the intestinal smooth muscle preparations. It was also found that AcT-3 could dose-dependently inhibit the proliferation of human prostate cancer cell lines after 72h incubation.

The biosorption process of anionic dye Alizarin Red S (ARS) and cationic dye methylene blue (MB) as a function of solution pH, initial concentration and contact time onto olive stone (OS) biomass has been investigated. The main objectives of the current study are to: (i) study the chemistry and the mechanism of ARS and MB biosorption onto olive stone and the type of OS–ARS, MB interactions occurring, (ii) study the biosorption equilibrium and kinetic experimental data required for the design and operation of column reactors. Equilibrium biosorption isotherms and kinetics were also examined. Experimental equilibrium data were fitted to four different isotherms by non-linear regression method, however, the biosorption experimental data for ARS and MB dyes were well interpreted by the Temkin and Langmuir isotherms, respectively. The maximum monolayer adsorption capacity for ARS and MB dyes were 109.0 and 102.6 mg/g, respectively. The kinetic data of the two dyes could be better described by the pseudo second-order model. The data showed that olive stone can be effectively used for removing dyes from wastewater.

The present study reports the effect a cell permeabilizer, polyethylenimine (PEI) has on the photodynamic effect of methylene blue (MB) and nuclear fast red (NFR) in the presence of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). The photosensitized destruction of the algae Chlorella vulgaris under irradiation with visible light is examined. The photodynamic effect was investigated under aerobic and anaerobic conditions. The presence of a permeabilizer during the photosensitized destruction of C. vulgaris does not enhance the activity of the MB, MB/H2O2 system or the NFR, NFR/H2O 2 system under aerobic conditions. However under anaerobic conditions we have determined that when a cell permeabilizer was added to the MB/H 2O2 system, the photosensitized destruction of C. vulgaris proceeded via a combination of Type I and Type II mechanisms. The presence of PEI enforces MB/H2O2 to be active toward the destruction of C. vulgaris whether oxygen is present or absent. Under aerobic and anaerobic conditions the activity of NFR was suppressed in the presence of PEI as a result of electrostatic interactions between the photosensitizer and the cell permeabilizer. The decrease in fluorescence recorded is indicative of destruction of the chlorophyll a pigment.

A considerable number of investigations have started to elucidate the essential roles biological agents play in the biodeterioration of stone. Chemical biocides are becoming increasingly banned because of the environmental and health hazards associated with these toxic substances. The present study reports the photodynamic effect of Methylene Blue (MB) and Nuclear Fast Red (NFR) in the presence of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) on the destruction of the algae Chlorella vulgaris (C. vulgaris) under irradiation with visible light. Illumination of C. vulgaris in the presence of MB or NFR combined with H2O2 results in the decomposition of both the algal species and the photosensitizer. The photodynamic effect was investigated under aerobic and anaerobic conditions. Differences in mechanism type are reported and are dependent on both the presence and the absence of oxygen. The behavior of each photosensitizer leads to a Type II mechanism and a Type I/Type II combination for MB and NFR, respectively, being concluded. This novel combination could be effective for the remediation of biofilm-colonized stone surfaces.

A resazurin (Rz) based photocatalyst indicator ink is used to test the activity of a commercial self-cleaning glass, using UV–vis spectroscopy and digital photography to monitor the photocatalyst-driven change in colour of the ink. UV–vis spectroscopy allows the change in film absorbance, ΔAbs, to be monitored as a function of irradiation time, whereas digital photography is used to monitor the concomitant change in the red component of the RGB values, i.e. ΔRGB (red). Initial work reveals the variation in ΔAbst and ΔRGB (red)t as a function of irradiation time, t, are linearly correlated. The rates of change of these parameters are also linearly correlated to the rates of oxidative destruction of stearic acid on self-cleaning glass under different irradiances. This work demonstrates that a measure of photocatalyst activity of self-cleaning glass, i.e. the time taken to change the colour of an Rz photocatalyst indicator ink, can be obtained using inexpensive digital photography, as alternative to more expensive lab-based techniques, such as UV–vis spectrophotometry.

The biosorption process of anionic dye Alizarin Red S (ARS) and cationic dye methylene blue (MB) as a function of contact time, initial concentration and solution pH onto olive stone (OS) biomass has been investigated. Equilibrium biosorption isotherms in single and binary systems and kinetics in batch mode were also examined. The kinetic data of the two dyes were better described by the pseudo second-order model. At low concentration, ARS dye appeared to follow a two-step diffusion process, while MB dye followed a three-step diffusion process. The biosorption experimental data for ARS and MB dyes were well suited to the Redlich-Peterson isotherm. The maximum biosorption of ARS dye, qmax = 16.10 mg/g, was obtained at pH 3.28 and the maximum biosorption of MB dye, qmax = 13.20 mg/g, was observed at basic pH values. In the binary system, it was indicated that the MB dye diffuses firstly inside the biosorbent particle and occupies the biosorption sites forming a monodentate complex and then the ARS dye enters and can only bind to untaken sites; forms a tridentate complex with OS active sites.

Understanding the dietary consumption and selection of wild populations of generalist herbivores is hampered by the complex array of factors. Here, we determine the influence of habitat, season, and animal density, sex, and age on the diet consumption and selection of 426 red deer (Cervus elaphus scoticus) culled in Fiordland National Park, New Zealand. Our site differs from studies elsewhere both in habitat (evergreen angiosperm-dominated forests) and the intensity of hunting pressures. We predicted that deer would not consume forage in proportion to its relative availability, and that dietary consumption would change among and within years in response to hunting pressures that would also limit opportunities for age and sex segregation. Using canonical correspondence analysis, we evaluated the relative importance of different drivers of variation in diet consumption assessed from gut content and related these to available forage in the environment. We found that altitude explained the largest proportion of variation in diet consumption, reflecting the ability of deer to alter their consumption and selection in relation to their foraging grounds. Grasses formed a high proportion of the diet consumption, even for deer culled several kilometres from the alpine grasslands. In the winter months, when the alpine grasslands were largely inaccessible, less grass was eaten and deer resorted to woody plants that were avoided in the summer months. Surprisingly, there were no significant dietary differences between adults and juveniles and only subtle differences between the sexes. Sex-based differences in diet consumption are commonly observed in ungulate species and we suggest that they may have been reduced in our study area owing to decreased heterogeneity in available forage as the diversity of palatable species decreased under high deer browsing pressures, or by intense hunting pressure. © 2009 The Authors. This article examines the challenges of investigating and prosecuting forced displacement in the Central African countries of Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda, where higher loss of life was caused by forced displacement, than by any other. In the Democratic Republic of Congo, armed groups intentionally attacked civilian populations displacing them from their homes, to cut them off from food and medical supplies. In Northern Uganda, the government engaged in a forced displacement policy as part of its counter-insurgency against the Lord’s Resistance Army, driving the civilian population into “protected villages”, where at one point the weekly death toll was over 1,000 in these camps. This article critically evaluates how criminal responsibility can be established for forced displacement and alternative approaches to accountability through reparations.

Cold plasma is an emerging non-thermal processing technology that could be used for large scale leaf decontamination as an alternative to chlorine washing. In this study the effect of an atmospheric cold plasma apparatus (air DBD, 15 kV) on the safety, antioxidant activity and quality of radicchio (red chicory, Cichorium intybus L.) was investigated after 15 and 30 min of treatment (in afterglow at 70 mm from the discharge, at 22 °C and 60% of RH) and during storage. Escherichia coli O157:H7 inoculated on radicchio leaves was significantly reduced after 15 min cold plasma treatment (-1.35 log MPN/cm2). However, a 30 min plasma treatment was necessary to achieve a significant reduction of Listeria monocytogenes counts (-2.2 log CFU/cm2). Immediately after cold plasma treatment, no significant effects emerged in terms of antioxidant activity assessed by the ABTS and ORAC assay and external appearance of the radicchio leaves. Significant changes between treated and untreated radicchio leaves are quality defects based on the cold plasma treatment. Atmospheric cold plasma appears to be a promising processing technology for the decontamination of leafy vegetables although some criticalities, that emerged during storage, need to be considered in future studies.
