An analytical approach for CMOS parameter extraction which includes the effect of parasitic resistance is presented. The method is based on small-signal equivalent circuit valid in all region of operation to uniquely extract extrinsic resistances, which can be used to extend the industry standard BSIM3v3 MOSFET model for radio frequency applications. The verification of the model was carried out through frequency domain measurements of S-parameters and direct time domain measurement at 2.4 GHz in a large signal non-linear mode of operation. An array of schistosome endoproteases involved in the digestion of host hemoglobin to absorbable peptides has been described, but the exoprotease responsible for catabolising these peptides to amino acids has yet to be identified. By searching the public databases we found that Schistosoma mansoni and Schistosoma japonicum express a gene encoding a member of the M17 family of leucine aminopeptidases (LAPs). A functional recombinant S. mansoni LAP produced in insect cells shared biochemical properties, including pH optimum for activity, substrate specificity and reliance on metal cations for activity, with the major aminopeptidase activity in soluble extracts of adult worms. The pH range in which the enzyme functions and the lack of a signal peptide indicate that the enzyme functions intracellularly. Immunolocalisation studies showed that the S. mansoni LAP is synthesised in the gastrodermal cells surrounding the gut lumen. Accordingly, we propose that peptides generated in the lumen of the schistosome gut are absorbed into the gastrodermal cells and are cleaved by LAP to free amino acids before being distributed to the internal tissues of the parasite. Since LAP was also localised to the surface tegument it may play an additional role in surface membrane re-modelling. (C) 2004 Australian Society for Parasitology Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd. An efficient approach to the simulation of the double potential step chronoamperometry at a microdisk electrode based on an exponentially expanding time grid and conformal mapping of the space is presented. The dimensionless second potential step flux data are included as a function of the first potential step duration and the ratio of the diffusion coefficients of the reacting species allowing instant analysis of the experimental double potential step chronoamperograms without a need for simulation. The values of the diffusion coefficients are determined for several test systems and found to be in good agreement with existing literature data. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The O removal through water formation is an important process in the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis. In this study, both steps in water formation (O + H --> OH, OH + H --> H2O) are studied on the stepped Co(0001) at high coverages using density functional theory. We find the following. (i) In both O-O and O-OH co-adsorption systems, two transition states (TSs) were located for the O hydrogenation: in one TS, both O and H are on the same terrace, and in the other they are at the interface between the step edge and the terrace below. (ii) In both the O-O and O-OH co-adsorption systems, the O hydrogenation at the interface is easier (E-a = 0.32 eV in the O-O system, E-a = 1.10 eV in the O-OH system) than that on the same terrace (E-a = 1.49 eV in the O-O system, E-a = 1.80 eV in the O-OH system). (iii) In both the O-O and O-OH co-adsorption systems, only one TS for the OH hydrogenation was located, in which both OH and H are on the same terrace. (iv) Compared to the OH hydrogenation in the O-OH system (E-a = 1.46 eV), the reaction in the OH-OH system (E-a = 0.64 eV) is much easier. The barrier differences and the water effect on the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis are discussed. A possible route with low barriers for water formation is proposed.

It has often been supposed that patterns of rhythmic bimanual coordination in which homologous muscles are engaged simultaneously, are performed in a more stable manner than those in which the same muscles are activated in an alternating fashion. In order to assess the efficacy of this constraint, the present study investigated the effect of forearm posture (prone or supine) on bimanual abduction-adduction movements of the wrist in isodirectional and non-isodirectional modes of coordination. Irrespective of forearm posture, non-isodirectional coordination was observed to be more stable than isodirectional coordination. In the latter condition, there was a more severe deterioration of coordination accuracy/stability as a function of cycling frequency than in the former condition. With elevations in cycling frequency, the performers recruited extra mechanical degrees of freedom, principally via flexion-extension of the wrist, which gave rise to increasing motion in the vertical plane. The increases in movement amplitude in the vertical plane were accompanied by decreasing amplitude in the horizontal plane. In agreement with previous studies, the present findings confirm that the relative timing of homologous muscle activation acts as a principal constraint upon the stability of interlimb coordination. Furthermore, it is argued that the use of manipulations of limb posture to investigate the role of other classes of constraint (e.g. perceptual) should be approached with caution because such manipulations affect the mapping between muscle activation patterns, movement dynamics and kinematics.

It is unclear how human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) type 1–specific immune responses in exposed seronegative (ESN) individuals differ from those in HIV-1–infected subjects. By use of overlapping peptides spanning Gag, Tat, Nef, Vif, Vpr, and Vpu, peripheral blood mononuclear cells from ESN individuals, their seropositive (SP) partners, and unexposed seronegative control subjects were screened for interferon-? production. Responses were more frequent (95.7% vs. 20%), of a higher magnitude (9-fold), and of wider breadth (median number of peptides recognized, 18 vs. 2.5) in SP than in ESN individuals. Peptides recognized by ESN individuals were less frequently recognized by their SP partners. SP subjects infrequently recognized peptides from Vif, and such responses were subdominant; among ESN individuals, this HIV-1 protein was most frequently recognized. Immunodominant peptides recognized by SP subjects tended to be from relatively conserved regions, whereas peptides recognized by ESN individuals were associated with slow disease progression.

An electron-beam ion trap (EBIT) has been designed for atomic physics experiments at the Queen's University of Belfast. A pair of permanent magnets will be used to produce an axial magnetic field to compress an electron beam, whereas pairs of superconducting magnets have been used for traditional EBITs. The design of the new EBIT is detailed and possible experiments are explained to show the feasibility of the EBIT. (C) 2004 American Institute of Physics.

Metrology of XUV beams (X-ray lasers, high-harmonic generation and VUV free-electron lasers) is of crucial importance for the development of applications. We have thus developed several new optical systems enabling us to measure the optical properties of XUV beams. By use of a Michelson interferometer working as a Fourier-transform spectrometer, the line shapes of different X-ray lasers have been measured with a very high accuracy (Deltalambda/lambdasimilar to10(-6)). Achievement of the first XUV wavefront sensor has enabled us to measure the beam quality of laser-pumped as well as discharge-pumped X-ray lasers. A capillary discharge X-ray laser has demonstrated a very good wavefront allowing us to achieve an intensity as high as 3x10(14) W cm(-2) by focusing with a f=5 cm mirror. The sensor accuracy has been measured using a calibrated spherical wave generated by diffraction. The accuracy has been estimated to be as good as lambda/120 at 13 nm. Commercial developments are underway. At Laboratoire d'Optique Appliquee, we are setting up a new beamline based on high-harmonic generation in order to start the femtosecond, coherent XUV optic .

The role of the serine/threonine protein kinase B (PKB, also known as Akt) is becoming increasingly more evident to researchers investigating diverse cellular processes such as glucose uptake, cell-cycle progression, apoptosis and transcriptional regulation. New roles for PKB/Akt have been described in various organisms and biological processes. From the regulation of ovarian ecdysteroid production in the humble mosquito (Aedes aegypti), through the seasonal, tissue-specific regulation of PKB/Akt during the hibernation of yellow-bellied marmots (Marmota flaviventris), to the control of glucose metabolism and insulin signalling in the mouse (Mus musculus), our knowledge of the function of this protein kinase has expanded greatly in recent years. Significant advances in all aspects of PKB/Akt signalling have occurred in the past 2 years, including biological insights, novel substrates and newly discovered regulatory mechanisms of PKB/Akt. Collectively, these data expand the current models of PKB/Akt signalling and highlight potential directions for PKB/Akt research in the future.
