The carbazole moiety is a component of many important pharmaceuticals including anticancer and anti-HIV agents and is commonly utilized in the production of modern polymeric materials with novel photophysical and electronic properties. Simple carbazoles are generally produced via the aromatization of the respective tetrahydrocarbazole (THCZ). In this work, density functional theory calculations are used to model the reaction pathway of tetrahydrocarbazole aromatization over Pd(111). The geometry of each of the intermediate surface species has been determined and how each structure interacts with the metal surface addressed. The reaction energies and barriers of each of the elementary surface reactions have also been calculated, and a detailed analysis of the energetic trends performed. Our calculations have shown that the surface intermediates remain fixed to the surface via the aromatic ring in a manner similar to that of THCZ. Moreover, the aliphatic ring becomes progressively more planer with the dissociation of each subsequent hydrogen atom. Analysis of the reaction energy profile has revealed that the trend in reaction barriers is determined by the two factors: (i) the strength of the dissociating ring-H bond and (ii) the subsequent gain in energy due to the geometric relaxation of the aliphatic ring. The prediction of molar volumes and densities of several ionic liquids has been achieved using a group contribution model as a function of temperature between (273 and 423) K at atmospheric pressure. It was observed that the calculation of molar volumes or densities could be performed using the "ideal" behavior of the molar volumes of mixtures of ionic liquids. This model is based on the observations of Canongia Lopes et al. (J. Phys. Chem. B 2005, 109, 3519-3525) which showed that this ideal behavior is independent of the temperature and allows the molar volume of a given ionic liquid to be calculated by the sum of the effective molar volume of the component ions. Using this assumption, the effective molar volumes of ions constituting more than 220 different ionic liquids were calculated as a function of the temperature at 0.1 MPa using more than 2150 data points. These calculated results were used to build up a group contribution model for the calculation of ionic liquid molar volumes and densities with an estimated repeatability and uncertainty of 0.36% and 0.48%, respectively. The impact of impurities (water and halide content) in ionic liquids as well as the method of determination were also analyzed and quantified to estimate the overall uncertainty. © 2008 American Chemical Society.

The dehydrogenation of 1,2,3,4-tetrahydrocarbazole (THCZ) to form carbazole (CZ) over supported palladium catalysts was examined in the presence of hydrogen acceptors. As expected, liquid hydrogen acceptors increased the rate of reaction but, importantly, gaseous hydrogen acceptors also have been used. Ethene, propene, and but-1-ene showed up to a fivefold increase in the rate of dehydrogenation. Moreover, compared with the analogous liquid systems, the gaseous alternatives are a potentially more economic method of enhancing the activity and provide a simpler workup. The mechanism for the increase in rate was examined by density functional theory calculations, which showed that the propene hydrogenation competes effectively with the back-hydrogenation of the intermediates formed during the THCZ dehydrogenation, resulting in a shift in the equilibrium toward to the formation of CZ. The one-pot synthesis of the fungicide fenpropimorph has been achieved using two different synthetic strategies in an ionic liquid. The first pathway consists of a Heck coupling followed by reductive amination; the second pathway consists of an aldol condensation followed by hydrogenation/reductive amination. Homogeneous and heterogeneous palladium catalysts have been utilised in the ionic liquid to provide a catalyst/solvent system that is suitable for recycling and process optimisation.

The Heck arylation of 2-methylprop-2-en- I -ol in ionic liquids and organic solvents is reported using a range of homogeneous and heterogeneous palladium catalysts. Higher activity is observed in the ionic liquid media compared with N-methyl pyrrolidinone and under solventless conditions. The ionic liquid-catalyst system may be recycled easily with little loss in activity, although significant palladium leaching from the heterogeneous catalyst was observed. In the case of Trans-bis(2,3-dihydro-3-methylbenzothiazole-2-ylidene)diiodopalladium (11) reported to be highly active for this transformation, significant induction petiods were observed indicating that nanoparticles may be responsible for the catalysis. Using the ionic liquid Heck reaction, a recyclable synthesis for the fragrance beta-Lilial((R)) has been developed. (c) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

An efficient synthesis of a precursor to Lilial(R), based on an aldol condensation in an ionic liquid, is described, utilising piperidine as the base catalyst. The yields obtained with this methodology are significantly increased in comparison with those reported in organic solvents to date. In the ionic liquid, the self-aldol condensation of propanal is suppressed and leads to an increased selectivity with respect to the cross-aldol condensation product without the need to use an excess of 4-tert-butylbenzaldehyde to obtain high selectivities.

Asymmetric Diels-Alder reactions using platinum complexes of BINAP, or of conformationally flexible NUPHOS-type diphosphines, have been compared in dichloromethane and selected ionic liquids. Significant enhancements in the enantioselectivity (Deltaee approximate to 20%), as well as reaction rate, were achieved in ionic liquids compared with the organic media.

Several novel phosphoramidites have been prepared by reaction of the primary amines para-vinylaniline, ortho-anisidine, 2-methoxyphenyl(4-vinylbenzyl)amine, 8-aminoquinoline and 3-vinyl-8-aminoquinoline with (S)-1,1'-bi-2-naphthylchlorophosphite, in the presence of base. Rhodium(l) complexes of these phosphoramidites catalyse the asymmetric hydrogenation of dimethylitaconate and dehydroamino acids and esters giving ee values up to 95%. Soluble non-cross linked polymers of the para-vinylaniline and 3-vinyl-8-aminoquinoline-based phosphoramidites have been prepared by free radical co-polymerisation with styrene in the presence of AIBN as initiator. The corresponding [Rh(COD)](+) complexes serve as recyclable catalysts for the asymmetric hydrogenation dimethylitaconate and dehydroamino acids and esters to give ee values up to 80%. The dilute acid hydrolysis of grass and cellulose with phosphoric acid was undertaken in a microwave reactor system. The experimental data and reaction kinetic analysis indicate that this is a potential process for cellulose and hemi-cellulose hydrolysis, due to a rapid hydrolysis reaction at moderate temperatures. The optimum conditions for grass hydrolysis were found to be 2.5% phosphoric acid at a temperature of 175 degrees C. It was found that sugar degradation occurred at acid concentrations greater than 2.5% (v/v) and temperatures greater than 175 degrees C. In a further series of experiments, the kinetics of dilute acid hydrolysis of cellulose was investigated varying phosphoric acid concentration and reaction temperatures. The experimental data indicate that the use of microwave technology can successfully facilitate dilute acid hydrolysis of cellulose allowing high yields of glucose in short reaction times. The optimum conditions gave a yield of 90% glucose. A pseudo-homogeneous consecutive first order reaction was assumed and the reaction rate constants were calculated as: k(1) = 0.0813 s(-1); k(2) = 0.0075 s(-1), which compare favourably with reaction rate constants found in conventional non-microwave reaction systems. The kinetic analysis would indicate that the primary advantages of employing microwave heating were to: achieve a high rate constant at moderate temperatures: and to prevent 'hot spot' formation within the reactor, which would have cause localised degradation of glucose.

This paper discusses a number of checks that should be carried out to ensure that the kinetic and spectroscopic measurements made using a DRIFTS cell are meaningful. The observations reported here demonstrate how an appropriately modified commercial DRIFTS cell can provide pertinent kinetic information about both gaseous products and the related surface intermediates. The oxidation of CO with 02 was used as a test to assess the catalyst bed bypass by the reaction mixture. Full CO conversion was obtained after the light-off temperature in the case of the modified cell, contrary to the case of the original cell, for which 80% of the reaction mixture bypassed the catalyst bed. The water-gas shift reaction over a Pt/CeO2 catalyst was used as a model reaction to further characterize the behavior of the cell under reaction conditions. The catalyst bed was shown not to be a dead-zone and was purged in essentially the same time as that needed to purge the cell. The reaction chamber globally operated in a quasi plug-flow mode and the gas composition in the thin catalyst bed appears to be homogeneous when operated under differential conditions. The production of the gas-phase reaction product CO2 could be simultaneously followed both by mass spectrometry and DRIFTS, both techniques leading to identical results. Various IR bands integration methods were discussed to allow a precise and accurate determination of the surface concentration of adsorbates during isotopic exchange. (c) 2008 Elsevier B.V.
