We present the current status of the WASP project, a pair of wide angle photometric telescopes, individually called SuperWASP. SuperWASP-I is located in La Palma, and SuperWASP-II at Sutherland in South Africa. SW-I began operations in April 2004. SW-II is expected to be operational in early 2006. Each SuperWASP instrument consists of up to 8 individual cameras using ultra-wide field lenses backed by high-quality passively cooled CCDs. Each camera covers 7.8 x 7.8 sq degrees of sky, for nearly 500 sq degrees of total sky coverage. One of the current aims of the WASP project is the search for extra-solar planet transits with a focus on brighter stars in the magnitude range similar to 8 to 13. Additionally, WASP will search for, optical transients, track Near-Earth Objects, and study many types of variable stars and extragalactic objects. The collaboration has developed a custom-built reduction pipeline that achieves better than I percent photometric precision. We discuss future goals, which include: nightly on-mountain reductions that could be used to automatically drive alerts via a small robotic telescope network, and possible roles of the WASP telescopes as providers in such a network. Additional technical details of the telescopes, data reduction, and consortium members and institutions can be found on the web site at: http://www.superwasp.org/. The book has been described by various Irish historians as "the definitive treatment of that most peculiar institution--the Ulster Custom--and its tangled relationship with irish land and politics" (Liam Kennedy), "a brilliantly reconceptualised sketch of the Irish land question" (David Miller). "All previous discussion," according to another reviewer, "must take second place to Dowling's exhaustive survey, which draws on the whole range of surviving estate records to examine the theory and practice of tenant right across three centuries" (Sean Connolly).

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: To describe the clinical implementation of dynamic multileaf collimation (DMLC). Custom compensated four-field treatments of carcinoma of the bladder have been used as a simple test site for the introduction of intensity modulated radiotherapy.MATERIALS AND METHODS: Compensating intensity modulations are calculated from computed tomography (CT) data, accounting for scattered, as well as primary radiation. Modulations are converted to multileaf collimator (MLC) leaf and jaw settings for dynamic delivery on a linear accelerator. A full dose calculation is carried out, accounting for dynamic leaf and jaw motion and transmission through these components. Before treatment, a test run of the delivery is performed and an absolute dose measurement made in a water or solid water phantom. Treatments are verified by in vivo diode measurements and real-time electronic portal imaging. RESULTS: Seven patients have been treated using DMLC. The technique improves dose homogeneity within the target volume, reducing high dose areas and compensating for loss of scatter at the beam edge. A typical total treatment time is 20 min. CONCLUSIONS: Compensated bladder treatments have proven an effective test site for DMLC in an extremely busy clinic.

To assess 3-dimensional conformal radiotherapy (3D-CRT) and intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) techniques to see whether doses to critical structures could be reduced while maintaining planning target volume (PTV) coverage in patients receiving conventional radiotherapy (RT) for carcinoma of the maxillary sinus because of the risk of radiation-induced complications, particularly visual loss. Six patients who had recently received conventional RT for carcinoma of the maxillary sinus were studied. Conventional RT, 3D-CRT, and step-and-shoot IMRT plans were prepared using the same 2-field arrangement. The effect of reducing the number of segments in the IMRT beams was investigated. 3D-CRT and IMRT reduced the brain and ipsilateral parotid gland doses compared with the conventional plans. IMRT reduced doses to both optic nerves; for the contralateral optic nerve, 15-segment IMRT plans delivered an average maximal dose of 56.4 Gy (range 53.9–59.3) compared with 65.7 Gy (range 65.3–65.9) and 64.2 Gy (range 61.4–65.6) for conventional RT and 3D-CRT, respectively. IMRT also gave improved PTV homogeneity and improved coverage, with an average of 8.5% (range 7.0–11.7%) of the volume receiving

Volume: 11 Issue: 4 Pages: 465-477 Published: MAR 2000 Times Cited: 9 References: 15 Citation MapCitation Map beta Abstract: We extend the concept of time operator for general semigroups and construct a non-self-adjoint time operator for the diffusion equation which is intertwined with the unilateral shift. We obtain the spectral resolution, the age eigenstates and a new shift representation of the solution of the diffusion equation. Based on previous work we obtain similarly a self-adjoint time operator for Relativistic Diffusion. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
