Aims.We use observations and models of molecular D/H ratios to probe the physical conditions and chemical history of the gas and to differentiate between gas-phase and grain-surface chemical processing in star forming regions. Methods: As a follow up to previous observations of HDCO/H2CO and DCN/HCN ratios in a selection of low-mass protostellar cores, we have measured D2CO/H2CO and N2D^+/N2H+ ratios in these same sources. For comparison, we have also measured N2D^+/N2H+ ratios towards several starless cores and have searched for N2D+ and deuterated formaldehyde towards hot molecular cores (HMCs) associated with high mass star formation. We compare our results with predictions from detailed chemical models, and to other observations made in these sources. Results: Towards the starless cores and low-mass protostellar sources we have found very high N2D+ fractionation, which suggests that the bulk of the gas in these regions is cold and heavily depleted. The non-detections of N2D+ in the HMCs indicate higher temperatures. We did detect HDCO towards two of the HMCs, with abundances 1-3% of H2CO. These are the first detections of deuterated formaldehyde in high mass sources since Turner (1990) measured HDCO/H2CO and D2CO/H2CO towards the Orion Compact Ridge. The nonlinear coupling between finite amplitude ion thermal waves (ITWs) and quasistationary density perturbations in a pair-ion plasma is considered. A generalized nonlinear Schrödinger equation is derived for the ITW electric field envelope, accounting for large amplitude quasistationary plasma slow motion describing the ITW ponderomotive force. The present theory accounts for the trapping of ITWs in a large amplitude ion density hole. The small amplitude limit is considered and exact analytical solutions are obtained. Finite amplitude solutions are obtained numerically and their characteristics are discussed.

• Stable isotope ratios of organic compounds are valuable tools for determining the geographical origin, identity, authenticity or history of samples from a vast range of sources such as sediments, plants and animals, including humans. • Hydrogen isotope ratios (d2H values) of methoxyl groups in lignin from wood of trees grown in different geographical areas were measured using compound-specificpyrolysis isotope ratio mass spectrometry analysis. • Lignin methoxyl groups were depleted in 2H relative to both meteoric water andwhole wood. A high correlation (r2=0.91) was observed between the d2 H valuesof the methoxyl groups and meteoric water, with a relatively uniform fractionation of –216±19 recorded with respect to meteoric water over a range of d2H values from –110 in northern Norway to + 20‰ in Yemen. Thus, woods from northernlatitudes can be clearly distinguished from those from tropical regions. By contrast, the d2H values of bulk wood were only relatively poorly correlated (r 2 = 0.47) with those of meteoric water. • Measurement of the d 2H values of lignin methoxyl groups is potentially a powerful tool that could be of use not only in the constraint of the geographical origin of lignified material but also in paleoclimate, food authenticity and forensic investigations.

Previous studies have attempted to identify sources of contextual information which can facilitate dual adaptation to two variants of a novel environment, which are normally prone to interference. The type of contextual information previously used can be grouped into two broad categories: that which is arbitrary to the motor system, such as a colour cue, and that which is based on an internal property of the motor system, such as a change in movement effector. The experiments reported here examined whether associating visuomotor rotations to visual targets and movements of different amplitude would serve as an appropriate source of contextual information to enable dual adaptation. The results indicated that visual target and movement amplitude is not a suitable source of contextual information to enable dual adaptation in our task. Interference was observed in groups who were exposed to opposing visuomotor rotations, or a visuomotor rotation and no rotation, both when the onset of the visuomotor rotations was sudden, or occurred gradually over the course of training. Furthermore, the pattern of interference indicated that the inability to dual adapt was a result of the generalisation of learning between the two visuomotor mappings associated with each of the visual target and movement amplitudes. In dielectronic recombination of hydrogenlike ions an intermediate doubly excited heliumlike ion is formed. Since the K shell is empty, both excited electrons can decay sequentially to the ground state. In this paper we analyze the x-ray radiation emitted from doubly and singly excited heliumlike titanium ions produced inside the Tokyo electron beam ion trap. Theoretical population densities of the singly excited states after the first transition and the transition probabilities of these states into the ground state were also calculated. This allowed theoretical branching ratios to be determined for each manifold. These branching ratios are compared to the experimentally obtained x-ray distribution by fitting across the relevant peak using a convolution of the theoretically obtained resonance strengths and energies. By taking into account 2E1 transitions which are not observed in the experiment, the measured and calculated ratios agree well. This method provides a valuable insight into the transition dynamics of excited highly charged ions.

We here analyse the observational SO and CS data presented in Nilsson ct al. (2000). The SO/CS integrated intensity ratio maps are presented for 19 molecular clouds, together with tables of relevant ratios at strategic positions, where we have also observed (SO)-S-34 and/or (CS)-S-34. The SO/CS abundance ratio as calculated from an LTE analysis is highly varying within and between the sources. Our isotopomer observations and Monte Carlo simulations verify that this is not an artifact due to optical depth problems. The variation of the maximum SO/CS abundance ratio between the clouds is 0.2-7. The largest variations within a cloud are found for the most nearby objects, possibly indicating resolution effects. We have also performed time dependent chemical simulations. We compare the simulations with our observed SO/CS abundance ratios and suggest a varying oxygen to carbon initial abundance, differing temporal evolution, density differences and X-ray sources associated with young stellar objects as possible explanations to the variations. In particular, the observed variation of the maximum SO/CS abundance ratio between the clouds can be explained by using initial O/C+ abundance ratios in the range 1.3-2.5. We finally derive a relationship between the SO/CS and O-2/CO abundance ratios, which may be used as a guide to find the most promising interstellar O-2 search targets.

For the purpose of equalisation of rapidly time variant multipath channels, we derive a novel adaptive algorithm, the amplitude banded LMS (ABLMS); which implements a nonlinear adaptation based on a coefficient matrix. Then we develop the: ABLMS algorithm as the adaptation procedure for a linear transversal equaliser (LTE) and a decision feedback equaliser (DFE) where a parallel adaptation scheme is deployed. Computer simulations demonstrate that with a small increase of computational complexity, the ABLMS based parallel equalisers provide a significant improvement related to the conventional LMS DFE and the LMS LTE in the case of a second order Markov communication channel model.

This paper proposes a non-linear adaptive algorithm, the amplitude banded RLS (ABRLS) algorithm, as an adaptation procedure for time variant channel equalizers. In the ABRLS algorithm, a coefficient matrix is updated based on the amplitude level of the received sequence. To enhance the capability of tracking for the ABRLS algorithm, a parallel adaptation scheme is utilized which involves the structures of decision feedback equalizer (DFE). Computer simulations demonstrate that the novel ABRLS based equalizer provides a significant improvement relative to the conventional RLS DFE on a rapidly time variant communication channel.
