This study describes the formulation, characterisation and preliminary clinical evaluation of mucoadhesive, semi-solid formulations containing hydroxyethylcellulose (HEC, 1-5%, w/w), polyvinylpyrrolidine (PVP, 2 or 3%, w/w), poly carbophil (PC, 1 or 3%, w/w) and tetracycline (5%, w/w, as the hydrochloride). Each formulation was characterised in terms of drug release, hardness, compressibility, adhesiveness (using a texture analyser in texture profile analysis mode), syringeability (using a texture analyser in compression mode) and adhesion to a mucin disc (measured as a detachment force using the texture analyser in tensile mode). The release exponent for the formulations ranged from 0.78+/-0.02 to 1.27+/-0.07, indicating that drug release was non-diffusion controlled. Increasing the concentrations of each polymeric component significantly increased the time required for 10 and 30% release of the original mass of tetracycline, due to both increased viscosity and, additionally, the unique swelling properties of the formulations. Increasing concentrations of each polymeric component also increased the hardness, compressibility, adhesiveness, syringeability and mucoadhesion of the formulations. The effects on product hardness, compressibility and syringeability may be due to increased product viscosity and, hence, increased resistance to compression. Similarly, the effects of these polymers on adhesiveness/mucoadhesion highlight their mucoadhesive nature and, importantly, the effects of polymer state (particularly PC) on these properties. Thus, in formulations where the neutralisation of PC was maximally suppressed, adhesiveness and mucoadhesion were also maximal. Interestingly, statistical interactions were primarily observed between the effects of HEC and PC on drug release, mechanical and mucoadhesive properties. These were explained by the effects of HEC on the physical state of PC, namely swollen or unswollen. In the preliminary clinical evaluation, a formulation was selected that offered an appropriate balance of the above physical properties and contained 3% HEC, 3% PVP and 1% PC, in addition to tetracycline 5% (as the hydrochloride). The clinical efficacy of this (test) formulation was compared to an identical tetracycline-devoid (control) formulation in nine periodontal pockets (greater than or equal to 5 mm depth). One week following administration of the test formulation, there was a significant improvement in periodontal health as identified by reduced numbers of sub-gingival microbial pathogens. Therefore, it can be concluded that, when used in combination with mechanical plaque removal, the tetracycline-containing semi-solid systems described in this study would augment such therapy by enhancing the removal of pathogens, thus improving periodontal health. Plane wave scattering from a flat surface consisting of two periodic arrays of ring elements printed on a grounded dielectric sheet is investigated. It is shown that the reflection phase variation as a function of ring diameter is controlled by the difference in the centre resonant frequency of the two arrays. Simulated and measured results at X-band demonstrate that this parameter can be used to reduce the gradient and improve the linearity of the reflection phase versus ring size slope. These are necessary conditions for the re-radiating elements to maximise the bandwidth of a microstrip reflectarray antenna. The scattering properties of a conventional dual resonant multilayer structure and an array of concentric rings printed on a metal backed dielectric substrate are compared and the trade-off in performance is discussed.

There is a great need to design functional bioactive substitute materials capable of surviving harsh and diverse conditions within the human body. Calcium-phosphate ceramics, in particular hydroxyapatite are well established substitute materials for orthopaedic and dental applications. The aim of this study was to develop a bioceramic from alga origins suitable for bone tissue application. This was achieved by a novel synthesis technique using ambient pressure at a low temperature of 100 degrees C in a highly alkaline environment. The algae was characterised using SEM, BET, XRD and Raman Spectroscopy to determine its physiochemical properties at each stage. The results confirmed the successful conversion of mineralised red alga to hydroxyapatite, by way of this low-pressure hydrothermal process. Furthermore, the synthesised hydroxyapatite maintained the unique micro-porous structure of the original algae, which is considered beneficial in bone repair applications. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V. The technical challenges in the design and programming of signal processors for multimedia communication are discussed. The development of terminal equipment to meet such demand presents a significant technical challenge, considering that it is highly desirable that the equipment be cost effective, power efficient, versatile, and extensible for future upgrades. The main challenges in the design and programming of signal processors for multimedia communication are, general-purpose signal processor design, application-specific signal processor design, operating systems and programming support and application programming. The size of FFT is programmable so that it can be used for various OFDM-based communication systems, such as digital audio broadcasting (DAB), digital video broadcasting-terrestrial (DVB-T) and digital video broadcasting-handheld (DVB-H). The clustered architecture design and distributed ping-pong register files in the PAC DSP raise new challenges of code generation.

In this article we propose a technique for dual-band Class-E power amplifier design using composite right/left-handed transmission lines, CRLH TLs. Design equations are presented and design procedures are elaborated. Because of the nonlinear phase dispersion characteristic of CRLH TLs, the single previous attempt at applying this method to dual bond Class-E amplifier design was not sufficient to simultaneously satisfy, the minimum requirement of Class-E impedances at both the fundamental and the second harmonic frequencies. This article rectifies this situation. A design example illustrating the synthesis procedure for a 0.5W-5V dual band Class-E amplifier circuit simultaneously operated at 900 MHz and 2.4 GHz is given and compared with ADS simulation.

The impact of source/drain engineering on the performance of a six-transistor (6-T) static random access memory (SRAM) cell, based on 22 nm double-gate (DG) SOI MOSFETs, has been analyzed using mixed-mode simulation, for three different circuit topologies for low voltage operation. The trade-offs associated with the various conflicting requirements relating to read/write/standby operations have been evaluated comprehensively in terms of eight performance metrics, namely retention noise margin, static noise margin, static voltage/current noise margin, write-ability current, write trip voltage/current and leakage current. Optimal design parameters with gate-underlap architecture have been identified to enhance the overall SRAM performance, and the influence of parasitic source/drain resistance and supply voltage scaling has been investigated. A gate-underlap device designed with a spacer-to-straggle (s/sigma) ratio in the range 2-3 yields improved SRAM performance metrics, regardless of circuit topology. An optimal two word-line double-gate SOI 6-T SRAM cell design exhibits a high SNM similar to 162 mV, I-wr similar to 35 mu A and low I-leak similar to 70 pA at V-DD = 0.6 V, while maintaining SNM similar to 30% V-DD over the supply voltage (V-DD) range of 0.4-0.9 V.

The present paper proposes for the first time, a novel design methodology based on the optimization of source/drain extension (SDE) regions to significantly improve the trade-off between intrinsic voltage gain (A(vo)) and cut-off frequency (f(T)) in nanoscale double gate (DG) devices. Our results show that an optimally designed 25 nm gate length SDE region engineered DG MOSFET operating at drain current of 10 mu A/mu m, exhibits up to 65% improvement in intrinsic voltage gain and 85% in cut-off frequency over devices designed with abrupt SIDE regions. The influence of spacer width, lateral source/drain doping gradient and symmetric as well as asymmetrically designed SDE regions on key analog figures of merit (FOM) such as transconductance (g(m)), transconductance-to-current ratio (g(m)/I-ds), Early voltage (V-EA), output conductance (g(ds)) and gate capacitances are examined in detail. The present work provides new opportunities for realizing future low-voltage/low-power analog circuits with nanoscale SDE engineered DG MOSFETs. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In this paper, we propose for the first time, an analytical model for short channel effects in nanoscale source/drain extension region engineered double gate (DG) SOI MOSFETs. The impact of (i) lateral source/drain doping gradient (d), (ii) spacer width (s), (iii) spacer to doping gradient ratio (s/d) and (iv) silicon film thickness (T-si), on short channel effects - threshold voltage (V-th) and subthreshold slope (S), on-current (I-on), off-current (I-on) and I-on/I-off is extensively analysed by using the analytical model and 2D device simulations. The results of the analytical model confirm well with simulated data over the entire range of spacer widths, doping gradients and effective channel lengths. Results show that lateral source/drain doping gradient along with spacer width can not only effectively control short channel effects, thus presenting low off-current, but can also be optimised to achieve high values of on-currents. The present work provides valuable design insights in the performance of nanoscale DG Sol devices with optimal source/drain engineering and serves as a tool to optimise important device and technological parameters for 65 nm technology node and below. This paper details the implementation and operational performance of a minimum-power 2.45-GHz pulse receiver and a companion on-off keyed transmitter for use in a semi-active duplex RF biomedical transponder. A 50-Ohm microstrip stub-matched zero-bias diode detector forms the heart of a body-worn receiver that has a CMOS baseband amplifier consuming 20 microamps from +3 V and achieves a tangential sensitivity of -53 dBm. The base transmitter generates 0.5 W of peak RF output power into 50 Ohms. Both linear and right-hand circularly polarized Tx-Rx antenna sets were employed in system reliability trials carried out in a hospital Coronary Care Unit, For transmitting antenna heights between 0.3 and 2.2 m above floor level, transponder interrogations were 95% reliable within the 67-m-sq area of the ward, falling to an average of 46 % in the surrounding rooms and corridors. Overall, the circular antenna set gave the higher reliability and lower propagation power decay index.
