This paper draws on some of the preliminary findings of a small pilot study which aimed to discover what evidentiary challenges a range of practitioners with experience of different international trials faced in the cases they were involved in, and what practices were developed to deal with these challenges. The findings in this study are based on the data collected from The Hague-based institutions, the ICC, the ICTY, the ICTY and ICTR Appeals Chamber, and the Special Tribunal for the Lebanon (STL). It is argued that professionals moving from institution to institution are engaged in a process of cross-pollination which itself influences the practices that develop, although a common understanding of certain evidentiary issues in international trials remains fragmented and at times elusive.

A series of cis-dihydrodiol metabolites, available from the bacterial dioxygenase-catalysed oxidation of monosubstituted benzene substrates using Pseudomonas putida UV4, have been converted to the corresponding catechols using both a heterogeneous catalyst (Pd/C) and a naphthalene cis-diol dehydrogenase enzyme present in whole cells of the recombinant strain Escherichia coli DH5 alpha(pUC129: nar B). A comparative study of the merits of both routes to 3-substituted catechols has been carried out and the two methods have been found to be complementary. A similarity in mechanism for catechol formation under both enzymatic and chemoenzymatic conditions, involving regioselective oxidation of the hydroxyl group at C-1, has been found using deuterium labelled toluene cis-dihydrodiols. The potential, of combining a biocatalytic step (dioxygenase-catalysed cis-dihydroxylation) with a chemocatalytic step (Pd/C-catalysed dehydrogenation), into a one-pot route to catechols, from the parent substituted benzene substrates, has been realised.

Piano stool complexes of rhodium and iridium activated by fluorinated and non-fluorinated N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands were shown to be catalysts for racemization in the one-pot chemoenzymic dynamic kinetic resolution (DKR) of secondary alcohols. Excellent conversions and good enantioselectivities were observed for alkyl aryl and dialkyl secondary alcohols.

A short, practical synthesis of the bis-acetylenic natural product falcarinol 1 is reported. This method relies on the alternate functionalisation of bis-trimethylsilylbutadiyne 10. This may be achieved in one-pot, however, better yields were obtained more conventionally. Lipase mediated enzymatic kinetic resolution of the racemic adduct in an organic solvent afforded (+)-1 in 97% enantiomeric excess. The analogous process performed with racemic 3-acetoxy falcarinol 11 under aqueous conditions gave (-)-1. Oxidation of 1 with Dess–Martin periodinane gave falcarinone 2.

In the future, biomass will continue to emerge as a viable source of chemicals. The development of new industries that utilize bio-renewables provides opportunities for innovation. For example, bio- and chemo-catalysts can be combined in 'one pot' to prepare chemicals of commercial value. This has been demonstrated using isolated enzymes and whole cells for a variety of chemical transformations. The one-pot approach has been successfully adopted to convert chemicals derived from biomass, and, in our opinion, it has an important role to play in the design of a more sustainable chemical industry. To implement new one-pot bio- and chemo-catalytic processes, issues of incompatibility must be overcome; the strategies for which are discussed in this opinion article.

A Pt catalysed hydrometallation reaction has been developed that provides b-metallated products as a single region and geometric isomer. The reaction is incredible tolerant of sterics and actually performs better in more sterically congested stubstrates. We have demonstrated this approach in hydrosilylations, hydrostannylations and hydroboronations. We have shown a wide range of silanes to participate in this reactions and a Denmark type one-pot hydrosilylation-Hiyama coupling has been achieved as a single regioisomer. The regioselectivity has been probed for internal alkynes and we have discovered that the regioselectively is determined by both steric and electronic factors. We can selectively form either the a or b-products as a single regioisomer by altering the steric environment and we have discovered that electronic effects overide the sterics.

Unmanned surface vehicles (USVs) are able to accomplish difficult and challenging tasks both in civilian and defence sectors without endangering human lives. Their ability to work round the clock makes them well-suited for matters that demand immediate attention. These issues include but not limited to mines countermeasures, measuring the extent of an oil spill and locating the source of a chemical discharge. A number of USV programmes have emerged in the last decade for a variety of aforementioned purposes. Springer USV is one such research project highlighted in this paper. The intention herein is to report results emanating from data acquired from experiments on the Springer vessel whilst testing its advanced navigation, guidance and control (NGC) subsystems. The algorithms developed for these systems are based on soft-computing methodologies. A novel form of data fusion navigation algorithm has been developed and integrated with a modified optimal controller. Experimental results are presented and analysed for various scenarios including single and multiple waypoints tracking and fixed and time-varying reference bearings. It is demonstrated that the proposed NGC system provides promising results despite the presence of modelling uncertainty and external disturbances.

Two stable nanofluids comprising of mixed valent copper(I,II) oxide clusters (<1 nm) suspended in 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate, [C(4)mim][OAc], and copper(II) oxide nanoparticles (<50 nm) suspended in trioctyl(dodecyl) phosphonium acetate, [P-88812][OAc], were synthesised in a facile one-pot reaction from solutions of copper(II) acetate hydrate in the corresponding ionic liquids. Formation of the nanostructures was studied using 13C NMR spectroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). From a solution of Cu(OAc)2 in 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate, [C2mim][OAc], crystals were obtained that revealed the structure of [C2mim][Cu3(OAc)5(OH)2(H2O)]center dot H2O, indicating the formation of copper hydroxo-clusters in the course of the reaction. Synthesised nanostructures were studied using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Physical properties of the prepared IL-nanofluids were examined using IR and UV-VIS spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and densitometry.

Fisheries can have profound effects on epifaunal community function and structure. We analysed the results from five dive surveys (1975–1976, 1980, 1983, 2003 and 2007), taken in a Special Area of Conservation, Strangford Lough, Northern Ireland before and after a ten year period of increased trawling activity between 1985 and 1995. There were no detectable differences in the species richness or taxonomic distinctiveness before (1975–1983) and after (2003–2007) this period. However, there was a shift in the epifaunal assemblage between the surveys in 1975–1983 and 2003–2007. In general, the slow-moving, or sessile, erect, filterfeeders were replaced by highly mobile, swimming, scavengers and predators. There were declines in the frequency of the fished bivalve Aequipecten opercularis and the non-fished bivalves Modiolus modiolus and Chlamys varia and some erect sessile invertebrates between the surveys in 1975–1983 and 2003–2007. In contrast, there were increases in the frequency of the fished and reseeded bivalves Pecten maximus and Ostrea edulis, the fished crabs Cancer pagurus and Necora puber and the non-fished sea stars Asterias rubens, Crossaster papposus and Henricia oculata between the surveys in 1975–1983 and 2003–2007. We suggest that these shifts could be directly and indirectly attributed to the long-termimpacts of trawl fishing gear, although increases in the supply of discarded bait and influxes of sediment may also have contributed to changes in the frequency of some taxa. These results suggest that despite their limitations, historical surveys and repeat sampling over long periods can help to elucidate the inferred patterns in the epifaunal community. The use of commercial fishing gear was banned from two areas in Strangford Lough in 2011, making it a model ecosystem for assessing the long-term recovery of the epifaunal community from the impacts of mobile and pot fishing gear.

A one-pot sol-gel synthesis method has been developed for the incorporation of metal nanoparticles into mesoporous oxide thin films deposited on various plane substrates by spin-coating and on the inner surface of fused silica capillaries by dip-coating. The size, the metal loading and the stoichiometry of the metal nanoparticles could be precisely controlled by following this methodology. In the first step, polymer stabilized Pt50Sn50 and Pt90Sn10 nanoparticles were obtained by a solvent-reduction method. Then, the nanoparticles were added to a metal oxide precursor sol, which was destabilized by solvent evaporation. After calcination, the obtained materials were tested in the hydrogenation of citral in both batch and continuous modes. The highest selectivity of 30% towards the unsaturated alcohols was obtained over supported Pt90Sn10 nanoparticles with a preferential formation of the cis-isomer (nerol) due to a unique confinement of the bimetallic nanoparticles in the mesoporous framework. The selectivity towards the unsaturated alcohols was further improved to 56% over the PtRu5Sn nanoparticles supported by impregnation onto mesoporous silica films. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. The preparation and characterisation are described of a robust, reversible, hydrogen peroxide optical sensor, based on the fluorescent quenching of the dye ion-pair [Ru(bpy)(3)(2+)(Ph4B-)(2)], by O-2 produced by the catalytic breakdown of H2O2, utilizing the inorganic catalyst RuO2 center dot xH(2)O. The main feature of this system is the one-pot formulation of a coating ink that, when dried, forms an active single-layer fluorescence-based H2O2 sensor, demonstrably capable of detecting H2O2 over the range of 0.01 to 1 M, with a relative standard deviation of ca. 4% and a calculated lower limit of detection of 0.1 mM. These sensors are sterilisable, using dry-heat, and stable when stored over 40 days, without exhibiting any loss in sensitivity or response characteristics.

Short rotation willow coppice (SRWC) treatment of biosolids is limited by the oversupply of biosolid derived phosphorus; this can lead to eventual losses of phosphorus to water. Water treatment residuals (WTR), a by-product of potable water treatment, have been identified as a viable soil amendment for mitigation of phosphorus loss. WTR exploit the capacity of internally held aluminium oxide-hydroxide complexes to immobilise labile phosphorus. However indiscriminate additions to plots can result in inadequate control or excessive immobilization of soluble P, leading to crop deficiencies. Four commercially grown common willow (Salix) genotypes (Terra Nova, Endeavour, Resolution and Tora) were grown in soil amended with WTR at five different application rates (0, 10, 25, 50 and 100 tonne ha-1 air-dry basis) in a glasshouse pot experiment. The effects of application rates on plant yields, tissue P concentrations, P uptake and soil labile P availability were measured. Results indicate labile P was reduced with increasing WTR application rates, without any negative agronomic impacts.
