Using density functional theory with the inclusion of on-site Coulomb Correction, the O vacancy formation energies of CexZr1-xO2 solid solutions with a series of Ce/Zr ratios are calculated, and a model to understand the results is proposed. It consists of electrostatic and structural relaxation terms, and the latter is found to play a vital role in affecting the O vacancy formation energies. Using this model, several long-standing questions in the field, such as why ceria with 50% ZrO2 usually exhibit the best oxygen storage capacity, can be explained. Some implications of the new interpretation are also discussed.

Ab initio total energy calculations within a density functional theory framework have been performed for CO and atomic oxygen chemisorbed on the Pt(111) surface. Optimised geometries and chemisorption energies for CO and O on four high-symmetry sites, namely the top, bridge, fee hollow and hcp hollow sites, are presented, the coverage in all cases being 0.25 ML. The differences in CO adsorption energies between these sites are found to be small, suggesting that the potential energy surface for CO diffusion across Pt(111) is relatively flat. The 5 sigma and 2 pi molecular orbitals of CO are found to contribute to bonding with the metal. Some mixing of the 4 sigma and 1 pi molecular orbitals with metal states is also observed. For atomic oxygen, the most stable adsorption site is found to be the fee hollow site, followed in decreasing order of stability by the hcp hollow and bridge sites, with the top site being the least stable. The differences in chemisorption energies between sites for oxygen are larger than in the case of CO, suggesting a higher barrier to diffusion for atomic oxygen. The co-adsorption of CO and O has also been investigated. Calculated chemisorption energies for CO on an O/fcc-precovered surface show that of the available chemisorption sites, the top site at the oxygen atom's next-nearest neighbour surface metal atom is the most stable, with the other four sites calculated bring at least 0.29 eV less stable. The trend of CO site stability in the coadsorption system is explained in terms of a 'bonding competition' model. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Ab initio total energy calculations using density functional theory with the generalized gradient approximation have been performed for the chemisorption of oxygen atoms on a Pt{100}-(1 x 1) slab. Binding energies for the adsorption of oxygen on different high-symmetry sites are presented. The bridge site is the most stable at a coverage of 0.5 ML, followed by the fourfold hollow site. The atop site is the least stable. This finding is rationalized by analyzing the ''local structures'' formed upon oxygen chemisorption. The binding energies and heats of adsorption at different oxygen coverages show that pairwise repulsive interactions are considerably stronger between oxygen atoms occupying fourfold sites than those occupying bridge sites. Analysis of the partial charge densities associated with Bloch states demonstrates that the O-Pt bond is considerably more localized at the bridge site. These effects cause a sharp drop in the heats of adsorption for oxygen on hollow sites when the coverage is increased from 0.25 to 0.5 ML. Mixing between oxygen p orbitals and Pt d orbitals can be observed over the whole metal d-band energy range.

A novel method for the preparation of titania sol–gel derived oxygen sensors based on the ruthenium(II) dye, [Ru(bpy)3]2+, is described. A titania sol–gel paste film was cast onto microscope slides, and the dye ion-paired to the deprotonated, hydroxylated groups on the film's surface from an aqueous solution of the dye at pH 11. The resulting sensor film is extremely oxygen sensitive, with a PO2 (S = 1/2) value (i.e. the partial pressure of oxygen required in order to reduce the original, oxygen free, luminescence intensity by 50%) of 0.011 atm. The sensor undergoes 95% response to oxygen in 4 s, and shows 95% recovery of its luminescence in argon within 7 s.

While it is widely believed that the use of amnesties and similar measures would mark a new departure in NI and the UK, so that speculation about their introduction causes public controversy and threatens political instability, the report demonstrates that such measures have in fact been repeatedly used in a wide range of circumstances since the foundation of the NI state. The paper offers definitions of the key measures which have been employed, including amnesties, sentence reductions linked to peace building and use immunities. It explores their historical use and its consequences.

We present nebular-phase optical and near-infrared spectroscopy of the Type IIP supernova SN 2012aw combined with non-local thermodynamic equilibrium radiative transfer calculations applied to ejecta from stellar evolution/explosion models. Our spectral synthesis models generally show good agreement with the ejecta from a MZAMS = 15 Mprogenitor star. The emission lines of oxygen, sodium, and magnesium are all consistent with the nucleosynthesis in a progenitor in the 14-18 M range. We also demonstrate how the evolution of the oxygen cooling lines of [O I] λ5577, [O I] λ6300, and [O I] λ6364 can be used to constrain the mass of oxygen in the non-molecularly cooled ashes to < 1 M, independent of the mixing in the ejecta. This constraint implies that any progenitor model of initial mass greater than 20 M would be difficult to reconcile with the observed line strengths. A stellar progenitor of around MZAMS = 15 M can consistently explain the directly measured luminosity of the progenitor star, the observed nebular spectra, and the inferred pre-supernova mass-loss rate.We conclude that there is still no convincing example of a Type IIP supernova showing the nucleosynthesis products expected from an MZAMS > 20 M progenitor. © 2014 The Author. The electrochemical performance of one-dimensional porous La0.5Sr0.5CoO2.91 nanotubes as a cathode catalyst for rechargeable nonaqueous lithium-oxygen (Li-O2) batteries is reported here for the first time. In this study, one-dimensional porous La0.5Sr0.5CoO2.91 nanotubes were prepared by a simple and efficient electrospinning technique. These materials displayed an initial discharge capacity of 7205 mAh g-1 with a plateau at around 2.66 V at a current density of 100 mA g-1. It was found that the La0.5Sr0.5CoO2.91 nanotubes promoted both oxygen reduction and oxygen evolution reactions in alkaline media and a nonaqueous electrolyte, thereby improving the energy and coulombic efficiency of the Li-O2 batteries. The cyclability was maintained for 85 cycles without any sharp decay under a limited discharge depth of 1000 mAh g-1, suggesting that such a bifunctional electrocatalyst is a promising candidate for the oxygen electrode in Li-O2 batteries.

BACKGROUND: Lower numerical ability is associated with poorer understanding of health statistics, such as risk reductions of medical treatment. For many people, despite good numeracy skills, math provokes anxiety that impedes an ability to evaluate numerical information. Math-anxious individuals also report less confidence in their ability to perform math tasks. We hypothesized that, independent of objective numeracy, math anxiety would be associated with poorer responding and lower confidence when calculating risk reductions of medical treatments.

METHODS: Objective numeracy was assessed using an 11-item objective numeracy scale. A 13-item self-report scale was used to assess math anxiety. In experiment 1, participants were asked to interpret the baseline risk of disease and risk reductions associated with treatment options. Participants in experiment 2 were additionally provided a graphical display designed to facilitate the processing of math information and alleviate effects of math anxiety. Confidence ratings were provided on a 7-point scale.

RESULTS: Individuals of higher objective numeracy were more likely to respond correctly to baseline risks and risk reductions associated with treatment options and were more confident in their interpretations. Individuals who scored high in math anxiety were instead less likely to correctly interpret the baseline risks and risk reductions and were less confident in their risk calculations as well as in their assessments of the effectiveness of treatment options. Math anxiety predicted confidence levels but not correct responding when controlling for objective numeracy. The graphical display was most effective in increasing confidence among math-anxious individuals.

CONCLUSIONS: The findings suggest that math anxiety is associated with poorer medical risk interpretation but is more strongly related to confidence in interpretations.

Spillover processes (i.e. the migration of ionic species from the support to the catalyst and vice versa) are known to play a very important role in catalysis and electrocatalysis. These spillover processes can be influenced by impurities (pre-existing on the catalyst surface) and by the catalyst morphology that may differ as a result of the differences in catalyst manufacturing processes. This work investigates the influence of impurities present in three commercial platinum (Pt) precursors. The resulting platinum films studied here were supported on yttria-stabilised-zirconia (YSZ). It was found that the three different catalyst films contained a range of impurities (determined by ICP-OES) that appear to affect the oxygen charge transfer reaction as studied by cyclic voltammetry (CV). © 2012 Elsevier B.V.

Kinetic demixing and decomposition were studied on three La0.6Sr0.4Co0.2Fe0.8O3- δ oxygen-separation hollow fibre membrane modules, which were operated under a 0.21/0.009bar oxygen partial pressure difference at 950°C for 1128, 3672 and 5512h, respectively. The post-operation membranes were characterized by Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry, Scanning Electronic Microscope, Energy Dispersive Spectrum and X-ray Diffraction. The occurrence of kinetic demixing and decomposition was confirmed through the microstructural evolution of the membranes. Secondary-phase grains were found on the air-side surface of the membranes after the long-term operation and Co and Fe enrichment as well as La depletion was found on the surface and in the bulk at the air side. Cation diffusivities were found to be in the order Co>Fe>Sr>La. Kinetic demixing and decomposition rates of the membranes at the air side were found to be self-accelerating with time; the role of A-site deficiency in the perovskite lattice in the bulk near the air side surface is implicated in the mechanism. The oxygen permeability was not affected by the kinetic demixing and decomposition of the material during long-term operation (up to 5512h), however, we may expect permeability to be affected by secondary phase formation on the air-side surface at even longer operational times. © 2010 Elsevier B.V.
